Title: What Do You Dream of Having in your Campsite?
Post by: Cilean on May 23, 2008, 07:20:26 PM

So I think we had this on the other site, if you could have your fantasy campsite? What would it be? What would you have in your site? What would make it yours?

I am looking forward to getting a Kitchen cover, from Panther Pavilions.  I want it in Purple and Black to sit next to my pavilion so we can cook and eat with cover.

For $800 you can get an inflatable hot tub.

Granted the logistics of getting enough water out there is a problem.  But the subject stated "dream" so there it is.

A travel trailer with a shower, A/C and Heater and one of those really nice quiet generators to run all the electrical stuff that I have come to appreciate.  ;)

Wouldn't have to take the time to set up a tent, take it down and pack it up again, especially if it's raining, wouldn't have to worry about rain, the tent leaking, stuff getting stolen, extreme heat or extreme cold and I could dry my hair with my hair dryer after taking a shower.  ;D

I want a camp COMPOUND!!! Complete with our own portable flushies, and a tent with AC where the ladies could rest and relax. Something decorated like the inside of a genie bottle...

I think having a 15ht/16 century brothel, and Gypsy side show, set up next door would be cool. Any body up for it at TRF?

Ok, my dream is to find an repurchase my family's old travel trailer and paint it up like an old fashioned gypsy wagon.  I know they have better and more modern RV's out there but it's my fantasy.  Besides out was an English BeeLine with a full back bathroom suite with a regular sized toilet, a full sink with a vanity and medicine cabinet, and a walk in shower.  It also had a full sized hanging closet.  You just don't find that stuff anymore.

I know I had posted this on the old site, and have considered getting a time or two:

Hobitat 6 (http://www.rei.com/product/745759)

6'4" in the center . . .

Now, if you want to get seriously out of hand, with a tent,

MSR Board Room Tent (http://www.rei.com/product/762749)

6'10" at center . . .

hmmm, that could be fun.

HUUUZZZAAAHHHH!!!

My one wish came true for the year.  We found an awesome 4 season tent that is 9'L X 9'W and 6'6" in height.  I will have more than enough room for everything and then some!

Now I must come up with a new wish for this year....Hey!  Fest hasn't started yet, and I've 3 weeks to go.

Having done a study of various pavilion designs over the years, I have come to the conclusion that there are ways to have all the modern conveniences without having the modern junk to go with them.

First of all, please remember, hot air rises, and air in and of itself is a good insulator..... So, if one were to set up a pavilion similar in design to some of the roman gear (smart people them there romans) with an outer wall of a bleached canvas, then an inner wall four inches inside that, same with the roofs, the hot are will be partially insulated, and with vents in the top, the hot air will exit the tent out of the top, just like a chimney.

Now, of course, having 25 slave wenches to make sure the air circulates by moving large fans, dancing etc would help keep the tent cooler.....

Next I think a large fire with a steer roasting on a spit and at least two barrels of wine and a couple of mead so that passers by may partake of the offerings of my camp.

Then, a bladesmith and blacksmith  in order to keep the mundane items in repair, shoes for the horses, armor, swords, daggers.

Finally a fletcher in order that a good supply of arrows and bows are available in case any unwanted interlopers try to interfere with the gathering.  You know the ones I mean, Politicians, Lawyers.........

Hey - I resemble that remark!

I'd have a diaphanous veil as a tent - like a parachute, decorated like the inside of a Turkish castle - ala Salahadein.

Speaking of which - does anyone know how the campsite fared in the storm? Trees make it?

I have recently been tempted by the 12' x 20' Bell Wedge tent (http://www.tentsmiths.com/period-tents-medieval-wedge-tents.html) from Tentsmiths. There's a canopy bed that breaks down for easy transport that I really want, also...

It's a possibility that I could work them into my budget this year... maybe...  (sigh)

Nice, although it's a bit shorter than the one I was looking at. My canopy bed probably wouldn't fit in it. Still for that much cheaper it's at least worth checking to see if I could make it work! Thanks!!!

I'm buyin', is that enough? I've got plenty of plans, and will be doing Scarby, so if the deal goes through, I've got a starter of two(triple stuffed) futon pads to work with. The rest I'm sure will come as directed by an official decorator. There is no doubt about you'll do something special on an official party wagon!

Now I'm just thinking about the paint scheme.....I hate yellow! At least, that much of it!!

Well, if you're going for the "Gypsy vardo" look then there are some traditional colors, but really anything in green with gold trim is classic for the Gypsy look...

Inside, of course, you need plenty of wood, lots of plush earth tones and muted jewel tones, and all the little touches that really say "Gypsy vagabond"...

Will you be doing all the interior construction yourself? I've actually done something like this before, and I have to admit the results were pretty spectacular. I wish I had pictures, but it was many years ago, and digital cameras were few and far between, and I've since lost contact with the bus owner.

Well a huge RV would be the dream.  You know one of those you see on the travel channel that cost a million dollars.  But since I will NEVER have one of those, I'll talk about my dreams for what I DO have.

We are buying a pop-up from a friend of ours.  For really cheap and it's in pretty good shape.

So.....

I can't decide between doing it up gypsy wagon like, something that nobility would travel in or something with scottish flare.  Either way I am putting pergo flooring in it.  In a nice rich rosewood.

If I go gypsy wagon, I'm thinking exotic with bright exciting colors.  Middle Easten inspired decor.  Stuff like that.

If I go noble.  Then I was thinking tapestries, jewel tones and filagree.

Scottish.  Well plaid and sheep I guess.  hehehehe  But lots of thistle-y stuff, celtic knot work, anything from Gaelsong.

What do you all think?

I would go with the mystical gypsy/noble look.  It is easier for you to find items to decorate with and will be more versitile.

1) Panther Pavilion would be nice- a BIG one, decked out like teh inside of the Weasley's tent in GoF

2) a feast! a proper, renaissance feast with candles, etc- Ive tried to do one at TRF before but no one was interested...  :'(

I would love to do  a 'magic ground' area where everything is at least vaguely period, but being the only 'lapsed SCAdian' in my group makes that a bit difficult!

Bellevivre, we shoud talk.  I don't think I could pull anything together for this year, but we could easily pull something together for next.  PM me, or let me know when you'll be out at faire and we can find each other.

I bought that for Pennisc camping this year and it was a life saver.  The only issue that we had was that we could not set up the sink because of no sump.

Before I left for Afghanistan I designed an outdoor stripper pole setup for camping purposes.
I Need to build and field-test that design one of these days.

I will be at TRF on Nov 13th and 14th with a "tarp support" intentionally designed to function
as a stripper pole. We'll see if we can get anyone using it. I am capable but I am hoping for better
looking participants.

The other item I really wanted was a hot tub. I have a vehicle that I was going to install a small one
in for camping trips but I couldn't get to it this year. Just too busy.

one out of two.

I know but at the Texas Ren fest ther is no water, so I need the heavy duty vehicle to bring in the water to fill it.
My honda won't carry several hundred gallons of water, but the truck I am refitting will, next year the hot tub!

I want a gypsy wagon..  One that is big and made from rich wood, hidden spaces for my cooking gear, lovely rugs, blankets, pillows.  It will have glass stain circle windows near the door, a small closet for the girls dresses that need to be hanged, drawers for small pieces of clothes.  I have been designing this and I will be making this when I save enough money.  I am already working on my cooking supplies, I got my first cast iron skillet today and in a month will be getting two more.  I'm looking into off ground fire pit so people will stop trying to do that dumb dance....

I also want a stripper pole but I have young ones in my group...  And I have to be the responsible one there..

Everyone that helping me with this want a large flat screen tv..  I say they an put a generator in they can have it.

If we won a big lottery we would like to get some space a Sherwood in the patron's campground and make a two-story covered outdoor cooking area. The upper floor we would reserve for our own sleeping space; but the ground floor cooking area would be open to other people camping.
I'm imagining a stone fireplace with an oven, grilling spots and a place for hanging pots.

Rabbi... if I still had a van it wouldn't be a problem.  I use Freecycle as often as I am able, and I have no problem asking a construction foreman if I can raid his scrap pile...  ;D

But I still don't have access to the tools I would need, either...

A round tent, with some sort of either pillow bed ( For colder/fair temperature ) nights , or a raised bed ( hammock, cot, ect ) for warmer, balmy faires. When I see the inside of my dream tent, I always imagine lots of pillows and soft blankets to curl up in after walking your body into the ground. A few lounging chairs would be sublime also, with of course warm blankets/thin blankets. I don't know if this is possible due to safety, but maybe have a fire in there also for warmth through the night? Not even a fire, just embers that will smolder until the morning.

I wouldn't want it to be too big either.. Large enough for a bed for me and the husband to sleep comfortably in, no more than two chairs, and enough room to change and move around in without subjecting ourselves to the weather outside. Literally, one of the hardest things I've had to do at faire was climb out of my bed the first weekend this year at SWFF and change into my garb.

I am sure my husband wants other things ( I know he wants to make us a flag that reflects us to hang ) but those are the big things.

You should look into a sibley or bell tent.  They are used at Civil war reenactments and can have a stove inside.  You have to be careful though, I have heard of them burning down if you don't watch the fire.  But I think if you took embers form the outside fire and carefully brought them in you would probably be ok.

Dona, I didn't even -think- about a rope bed! That is perfect!

I do have a question though ( Again, new to camping so I'm still learning )... When it gets really cold outside, I thought the extra air mass below the rope bed would "suck" the heat from you? Is this correct or have I misread? Also, if it does, what are some ways you can combat that? ( I was thinking folding a large comforter underneath the bed to " fill in " the airspace )

Having your mattress directly on the ground sucks the heat out. We are ever so much warmer now that we put our air mattress on top of a cot.

We also use a spare cheap sleeping bag opened up and spread out on top of the air mattress to insulate us from the cold air in the mattress.

For when we want a more period look we sewed a big envelope out of a couple plain sheets to camouflage the air mattress. We also use some cheap garage sale find Persian-style carpets over our plastic ground tarps which also helps insulate from the cold ground -and no bare ground before you grab your shoes/slippers in the middle of the night.
