Hey, good idea, fletcher. I might take the sites that are exclusively boots off my garb resource list and let you just list them here.

for example, this one http://www.medievalmoccasins.com/ (http://www.medievalmoccasins.com/)

Well, that's kinda why I did it, so that anyone, especially the newbies, could look in just one place instead of 5-10 different threads.

Big thanks to Trillium for making this a sticky.

I'm looking for the piece that I can slide down over the top of shoes that has laces to make it look like I'm wearing boots.  It's made out of leather or at least it looks like it is.  I don't know exactly what to call it or where to find it.  Can anyone help me w/ this?

I think what you are trying to describe are gaiters. They are similar to spats as well. They can lace up or buckle up either in the front of the back.

I have made them both ways. Usually I use buckskin as it is supple but tough. As a rule, I like to use buckles or buttons on the side, but the last ones I did laced up the back for our ranger garb. Like these?:

That's what I'm looking for.  The word "spats" came to me last night.  I've seen some that look like they have shoelaces on them but I don't know where to buy any.

I just bought the most wonderful, comfortable shoes at BARF this weekend from Heart & Sole.  They were a pair of unisex ghillies.  The price was $58, which is way cheaper than the $70 my husband paid for his at Bristol last summer.  They have women's shoes, men's shoes, and gorgeous boots.

They don't have a website yet, but one of the partners is Lady Nicolette, a member of this forum.  If you renmail her, she can let you know what faires they will be at and also more info about the styles of their shoes and boots.

Keith, the other partner, spends a lot of time with you to make sure you get a correct and comfortable fit.  I have the worst feet in the world, hammer toes, bunions, planter fasciatis, inflamed tendons and usually wear orthotics and limp.  I put these shoes on, walked out of the shop, and wore them for 2 days straight at faire.

You can't beat the prices and excellent customer service.

We're so happy you enjoy your shoes, Renee!  Keith is actually also a forum member although he works so hard making shoes he's not in here frequently...His forum name is willin here and he is a moderator of a couple of areas hereabouts...

We will now be known at most faires as Dream Shoes and will have a website up soon.

Not yet.  If you'll be headed to either MI or MN, we will be at both this year, probably before the website is ready.

Anyone know about scaboots.com (http://scaboots.com) ?

I need to purchase a pair myself and just have no idea who to buy them from.

Morvak, I've bought 2 pairs of boots from scaboots.com. One pair has just been ordered so is en route. The other is a pair of ladies pirate boots which I think are a great value for the money. Very comfy and keep the water and mud out so far (no torrential downpours experienced yet though). They get a thumbs up from me!

Are boots supposed to sag? I was talking to someone who said that it's modern boots that are made not to sag, and boots from the period should sag over time, of course depending upon how fit they are with your calves.

Is this correct? Most photos I see are people that have stiff boots.

My favorite is Native Earth. http://www.nativearth.net/index.html

I've had my two button boots for 10 years, and this season I broke a button. I took the boots back to see if I could purchase a replacement button. The lovely young lady who assisted me went the extra mile in searching through their stock to find a matching button, then sewed it on for me. When I asked how much I owed, she replied, "Nothing." When I tipped her $10.00, she tried to tell me that it was too much. I reminded her that it was only a dollar a year for maintenance, and that seemed very reasonable to me.

Needless to say, I am pleased with both the product and the service.

For a look at authentic reproductions of historical footwear, please visit http://www.galleryhistoricalfigures.com (http://www.galleryhistoricalfigures.com).

Artist and historian George Stuart thoroughly researches and then cobbles the footwear for his exquisite Historical Figures creations. While the quarter life size boots, shoes and sandals won't fit you, they can be an excellent source of authentic designs.

Our image database has a lot of close-ups of footwear, so please contact me about any Figure of interest.

No charge, nothing for sale here.

Enjoy!

I see a lot of men, and women, with Minnetonka Moccasins at the Michigan RenFest.  http://www.moccasinsales.com/

They're relatively inexpensive and comfy.  I own two pairs of the boots, a brown and black pair, and they wear well.  (http://www.moccasinsales.com/minnetonka_mens_knee_hi_front_lace.htm) Some people even cut the fringe off so that they have less of a Native American look to them.  I kept it on because I like the look.

Give a looksee at www.armstreet.com.  I have 2 pair of their footwear, a pair of toe up saracen boots and a pair of poulaines which if you don't know what they are,  they are somewhat similar to jester shoes but not as gaudy.  I love them both and if I ever need another pair, the only change I would make is order the wider versions.  They are most comfortable.   I have had to retire and replace my cavalier boots due to heaviness, and the fact that my feet, ankles and hips threatened to leave me en masse if I ever wore them again , these are great substitutes.  If anyone wants to see them I can send  pics.

Man O Man, Finding nice tall knee boots with a fold over top in Brown without a zipper is really tough. I have been looking for months. Black seems to be the popular choice. Any vendors out there that can sell un-dyed boots?

Maithu, not the latchet.  We got 3 different styles, and all 3 were outstanding.  We got 3-lace Shoe MIL435, Tudor shoes-leather WSC065, and Mary Rose shoes-Leather WSC175.  We dyed the Mary Rose shoes black, and they seem to be holding the dye quite well.  The Tudor shoes are straight lasted, and there is no right or left shoe.  Have not walked around in them for any length of time yet, so not sure how comfortable they are.
Good luck on your own purchase!

The boots in the photo appear to be from Native Earth.  Here's your link:
http://www.nativearth.net/boot.html

I've worn a pair of Native Earth 5-button boots for the past six years.  They are very comfortable, extremely durable, and I recommend them highly.  The owners of Native Earth, Jim and Lee Ann are two of the most splendid people I know.  Rest assured that if there is a problem with one of their boots, they will make it right.

You can order on line, but if at all possible I think you would be much better served by buying them from one of their shops in order to get the perfect fit.  A list of their shows can be found here:
http://www.nativearth.net/events.html

Good luck!

Does anyone know of a good source for accurate hobnails for latchet and buckle shoes? Everything is either modern British and German and British of the World Wars. Something small, flat and with a not very long shank?

Recently bought some shoes from garbtheworld.com Great prices, and great quality shoes!

I second this recommendation.  I just purchased two pairs from their store.  The Medieval Boot w/Buckles MIL427, and the 14th Century Lace Shoe MIL422.  Both pairs look very nice and authentic, and the soles feel sturdy.  They're comfy without an insole, but I'll probably put one in due to being on my feet all day at the faire.  For a little over $100 wish shipping, these were a really good deal.

I also want to mention garbtheworld's customer service, which was excellent.  They responded very quickly to all of my questions.  They also refunded part of my shipping since it was cheaper than what they charged.

Maithu, sorry it took so long to respond!  I have used "cut tacks" from the hardware store for hobnails.  They are small and have a short shank.  They work great!  They truly make your soles last longer!  But beware of how you walk on stone or tile; you will slide!

I wore my Garb the World latchet shoes to the Carolina Renaissance Faire this past weekend and they felt great (of course, with two pairs of long stockings and gel inserts). Despite not having hobbed them quite yet, the leather soles took hardly any wear except for some dirt ... and this was on wet grass, damp dirt, rocks and gravel. Plus they make that awesine hard-leather stomp sound on wooden surfaces. I definitely recommend them!

Does anyone know for sure if Minnetonka has completely discontinued their line of suede knee-high side lacing boots? I have a pair I've been wearing for 10+ years now and they are beginning to show real signs of fatigue. I wanted to look into replacing them, but everywhere I go on the web for them seems to indicate they are no longer available. Any suggestions for a worthy (but affordable, for me) replacement?

I have not seen http://www.catskill-moc.com (http://www.catskill-moc.com) listed.  I have an amazing pair of 5-button boots from them. It is hard to beat something that is custom made, especially if you have bad feet like I do.
