Title: Who's planning to go?
Post by: RahBur on February 11, 2015, 08:55:37 PM
I've never been to Faire :) I and if I go, I may be venturing out alone, but I'm very friendly and would love an opportunity to meet others with similar interests as mine! Advice for first-timers?

I'm hoping to. It'll be my first time at this one too.

We are tentatively planning for opening weekend. They are changing their time period this year, so not sure what to expect.

My cousin and I are planning on opening weekend again this year. I should probably remind her...

People are always talking, Sir. Are they saying anything about which I should know?

For a first-timer at faire, please take some $1 bills to tip live entertainers.  Also give a hearty "Huzzah" if you like an act.  Drink plenty of water a couple of days before and during faire if it's going to be hot.  If you dress up in period garb, you will have much more fun.

For a first-timer at Muskogee, make sure you check out Ezndil, Bob The Incredible Juggler & the Escapologist.  The best jousting will be the last one of the day.  You can rent garb at Muskogee if you don't have anything to wear.  (Unfortunately, that's kind of a rarity in these parts.)

Previously, it had been Henry VIII's reign, but they are changing to Elizabeth I this year.

We're going to try for opening, and maybe one other, as well.  Not sure we'll be able to do the whole weekend each time, but we will at least try to get in two day trips.  See you all there!  :)

First adventure to the Castle!  Yay!!  I'll be traveling with a group of 3 more (so far) from CoMO.  None in the group have previously visited the Oklahoma Festival.  We're still working out which weekend is best for the group!

We are certainly going to try!  It would be lovely to have a little more time to spend with you two, and the Wiz and his lovely bride, as well!  It seemed to fly past so quickly last time!

We would like to try and make it to Tea With The Queen this year, as well, since we haven't been able to make that happen so far.  It sounds rather pleasant, I think.  :)
Title: Re: Who's planning to go?
Post by: RefMom3 on April 01, 2015, 04:44:36 PM
We did the tea with the Queen last year, and it was very fun, even though we were two old ladies without kids ;). They have obviously had a change of cast for this year, but I was so impressed with how Lisa Marenghi involved the little girls in the event, and made it special for them. I'm sure Chris Ryan will be equally gracious.
If my cousin is able to make it, she would probably enjoy going to the King's Smoker (that is very much a Cindy sort of thing!), but since I'm not sure she'll make it, I hesitate getting tickets beforehand.

Well, since I'll be with my ScallyWag the Smoker is out for us (and I don't do well around smoke, anyway), but I am definitely considering the Tea.  I'm not sure, though, since Scally is 14, now, and I don't know if it would really entertain her at this point.  I might have left it to late, and need to find something a bit more "grown-up" to interest her, instead.  I'll have to think on it, and peruse the schedule of events, and see what presents itself.  I believe we will definitely try to make the Chess Match, since we have more than one friend who will be battling in it this year... and the belly dancers, of course.  Likely the Joust and Birds of Prey, as well.  Beyond that, however, I'm not sure.  We have never really spent any time in the Italian Quarter, and it seems to be nicely shaded in the afternoon... so we might have to do a bit of exploring in there, this year.  I'm guessing I will likely need to do a bit of sitting, as well... so anywhere with benches is going to be welcome!  We so seldom seem to sit and watch any of the shows while we're there, and this year we're staying for the whole of opening weekend, so maybe we'll try to remedy that.  Beyond that, it's anyone's guess!  We are just looking forward to seeing everyone... and it seems that every year we add more people to the list of those whom we are excited to see when we walk through the gates of our home Faire!  It's taken a while to start getting to know people out there... mainly because not many of them are HERE, on R/F, for some reason.  But I'm really starting to get excited, now... and counting down the days!  :)

Tamtaro, hopefully I will catch sight of you there, and recognize you!  If I do I will definitely stop you and introduce myself, and any of our party that happen to be strolling with us at the time.  I'll be keeping my eyes open!  Do you have an R/F pin, by chance?  I am always on the lookout for them, and it's a good way to find others from the forums, here.

I don't have a pin, but I am overly fond of my crazy hat (as seen in avatar picture).  So if you see the hat, wave to the person underneath! ;D

Opening day of Castleton was great! I saw most of my brother knights, and accompanied RefMom3 and her lovely and fun cousin Cindy... Saw Rani and Scally, Jim Ponte, and TAMTARO (and her mum)! I turn around and there is this great grin looking up at me! So much fun to see you, Luv!

I'm so sorry I missed you, Tamtaro!  I knew I was supposed to be on the lookout for you, but with everything going on I don't think I knew where I was looking half the time!  If it wasn't for my daughter Scally I would have even missed Merlin, Nim, RefMom and her cousin!  She spotted them from across the village green!  Good thing one of the Queen Anne's Lace "ladies" woke her from her little mini-nap!  lol  I wish I had been able to check here before we left, though... I would have been on the lookout for the hat!  Hopefully we will meet another time, though.  :)

Oh!  I almost forgot to post about what a wonderful time we had!  We were able to spend some time on Saturday afternoon (after ScallyWag finally spotted them) with Merlin and his ever lovely bride, Nim, and the gracious RefMom and her entertaining cousin Cindy, as well as running into Capt. Jack Daniels (Jim P.) of Black Pearl Leather several times, and also Scott Chene, as well!  On Sunday we were there in plenty of time for Cannon (although we still didn't make it in for the Gate Show, of course)... and we sat in the shade and waited for all of our friends to arrive, shopped a bit, and then went back out to the parking lot for a bit of a lunchtime tailgate.  My daughter and I have been wanting to host a little something for our friends for the last few years, but just it hasn't worked out until this year... and we were able to bring a few treats for a nice light luncheon in the shade.  Barring a bit of dust borne upon the lovely breeze, it was a very nice repast... and after bidding a very fond farewell to our favorite wizarding family we went back inside to enjoy the rest of our visit.  It was lovely... and we arrived home exhausted but happy shortly before 11pm, after the long drive (not anywhere NEAR as long as some, though) back.  It was a wonderful visit, and we were so very sad to leave it all behind us.  We are looking forward to seeing all of you next time!

We're really hoping to make one more trip out this season, but I will have to figure out how to scrape together the finances for the trip.  If not then we will definitely be going back for the Halloween event, which I know many of you will also be attending, as well!  We will most certainly see you there!  :)

It absolutely was a lovely time, and I was most happy to meet Tamtaro and companion ;)  It was such a warm moment to see her reaction, when Merlin introduced me by name and she smiled, and I realized I needed to use Refmom3--that recognition reaction gave me such warm fuzzies, lol. Thank you so much for that, Lady Tamtaro.
Rani and Scally's lunch was generous and delightful; thank you so much for including us. Merlin had to warn me several times to avoid poison ivy; poor man probably wonders how daft I can be ;)

I would go back to the Castle for another visit this year in a Muskogee minute, but other responsibilities prevent it. I get to look forward to Halloween. I love having things to look forward to.

Unfortunately our plans have changed - in an attempt for M'lady to show off her jump roping skills, barefoot, in the driveway, she broke a bone in her foot.  I am not up to carrying her  :P

Maybe next year

Oh, how sweet!  They do have a fun little knighting ceremony there, and the Quest is always fun for the kids, as well!  I'm always thrilled when kids come up to me and ask me to help them with their clues, because OF COURSE everyone in garb must live in the village, right?  And know everything there is to know about everything... simply because we look like we belong there!  :)  And of course I always know right where to send them, even when I haven't had a chance to read the clues...  lol  I think next year my daughter and I are going to have to make some favors for the kids...

If you don't mind me asking... what area are you from, RahBur?  I may have missed your Greetings thread, so I'm not sure where you hail from... and I haven't been spending anywhere NEAR as much time here on R/F as I used to... thanks to that other time-sucking place where people disappear for days on end, sometimes never to be seen again!  The "Book of Faces" should really have a much more sinister name, I think...  ;)  Anyway, I'm asking because I was wondering if we might be seeing you and your boys again for Haunted Castle this year, during October?  Granted, it's not quite as all encompassing as Faire... but from what I gather (this will be my first year to attend, even though I have friends who have been going for YEARS!) it's LOADS of fun!
Title: Re: Who's planning to go?

And it appears as though we might actually have something of a little thread going, here!  Who woulda ever thunk it?  Our own little Faire with it's own little ongoing thread... :D

We had such a good time at the Castle. We're planning on going back for Halloween, too. This will be my 3rd year doing the Halloween fest; I love the opening dance sequences that they do. And I was reminded that one of my knightly buddies owes me a butterbeer and looks forward to paying up! Castleton has a couple of themed weekends that I would love to see- the pirate and Celtic weekends look like a lot of fun.

Rani -
We live in Bentonville, AR. It was our first ever visit to the Castle, but we'd like to go in October, as well as December! We had a really good time visiting, and it's just shy of 2 hours for us. My boys are small, and I know there are 'less scary' things during the Halloween event, but I'd like to leave the little ones at home for a fun, scary night for the adults ^^
Title: Re: Who's planning to go?
Post by: Merlin the Elder on June 05, 2015, 07:38:04 AM
RahBur, it seems so strange for Bentonville to be a two-hour trip, and for us, coming from Maumelle, it's a little over three hours.

Our next faire will be about 11 hours away when we join RefMom3 at Bristol!
Title: Re: Who's planning to go?
Post by: Rani Zemirah on June 07, 2015, 12:07:38 AM
Oh, yay!  We'll definitely be there for Halloween, although we're waiting for RefMom to let us know which weekend she'll be going before we solidify our plans.  We're a bit over 2 hours away, here in Edmond, which is just a bit north of OKC, so it's not a quick jaunt for us, either... which means that gas is always a consideration.  Still, if they're going to drive all the way down from the north country then the least we can do is make the trip across the state!  :)  We might have to make two trips out this year, though, because my daughter and some of her friends want to do the Zombie Hunt (they're all 14 y/o, and way into the whole "undead" craze... lol), and that will likely take most of their evening, but I know that she will also want to spend as much time as possible with RefMom while she's here... so two trips are likely.  As for me, I don't really care much about all the spooky stuff... I just want to get dressed up and go wander about the grounds and see everyone I know out there, watch the entertainment at the chessboard stage, and wander around in the maze!  Oh!  And the owner of the Smoking Dragon has kindly offered to treat me to something tasty from his menu next time we're there, so I will definitely be doing that, as well!

I would love to be able to make it out there for the festivities in December, or the Boar's Head Feast... but that time of year money is always tight because of the holidays, so that's probably not happening any time soon.  I would also love to try the Ceilidh (the party during Celtic weekend), but it's 21+, and my daughter isn't about to stand for being left behind while I go to Faire AND a party without her!  LOL  Same with the party during Pirate weekend!  Still, we wouldn't mind just making it out for one of those weekends sometime, without the party afterward.  After all, I've only got another 4 years before she'll be off to college... and who knows how often I'll have her for Faire after that.

Merlin, I'm quite RENvious of your Bristol excursions!  That's another of the Faire's that are on my "someday" list...

I wish I knew which weekend we'll be aiming for, but it's too far away to guess. Plus, I'm still on thin ice at work, so who knows what will happen there. All things staying positive, we'll likely be at least a week or two into it before I can go. I, too, would love to go to the Ceilidh, and the pirate fest, and the Christmas festivities look amazing... I really do live too far, lol

You seem to have made an impression, and a conquest or two!  ;)  There truly are some wonderfully warm and welcoming folk there, aren't there?  I meet more and more people every time we go, as well, and I'm starting to feel very much at home there, myself!  :)
Title: Re: Who's planning to go?

I wouldn't call it a conquest, but someone want to have lunch. There are a lot of genuinely friendly people there.
And I do look forward to the butterbeer.
Title: Re: Who's planning to go?

Well, any time someone chooses to spend time with another, when they have any number of things they could be doing instead, that means that a favorable impression has been made... and therefore it means you have won someone over!  So you see, it is a conquest.  :P  No matter whether the interest be friendly, romantic, intellectual or what have you... there is still interest, and that is a very pleasant thing to experience!  :)  And both lunch and butterbeer is involved, as well... so I'd call it a definite WIN!
Title: Re: Who's planning to go?

Nope, nothing dramatic. Just making it easier to talk than type ;) Plus, I have something for a charming 6-year-old pirate that his dad requested I present in person ;) That is one thing I'm particularly looking forward to ;)
Title: Re: Who's planning to go?

Well, pirates do tend to prefer getting their loot in person, in my own experience, at least.  Especially those who have reached the very great age of 6 years!  And it is definitely much nicer to talk in person than to type... but I'll take the typing, as well, when it's all I've got!  :)
Title: Re: Who's planning to go?

I will absolutely take the typing; there are too many whose friendship I've grown to cherish to get  persnickety about typing rather than talking. I really, really dislike talking on the phone; it's one of those things where, if I'm not careful, I may have to turn in my girl card for...
I submitted my request for vacation but I haven't heard yet. I think I requested the weekend of the 23rd, but I can't remember. It was because others were already picked, and I put in for it without paying much attention, just so I could get something started.

Ahh... well, then, we'll have to make sure we try and save enough to get us there for that weekend!  We haven't made any firm plans yet, at all,so we're still open.

I agree about talking on the phone, as well... I'm not much for it, most of the time.  There are a couple of friends with whom I can manage to fritter away an hour or more,. however, and not even notice... but only if I have the little headset thingy on!  I can't stand to hold the phone up to my ear, though... it's irritating at best, and other things I won't even mention when I have to talk to people I don't care much for!  LOL  But typing is at least easily edited, as long as I'm thinking before I hit the "send" or the "post" button...  :o  Not that I do that often... unfortunately.  I tend to get myself into trouble just as easily with typing as I do with speaking, but that's probably because I don't filter enough of what rolls around in my head before I let it out, most likely.  I'm probably not a very good "girl", either, I suppose... although I do like to shop!  I just don't like to spend money...  :-\
