Title: Visiting Deerfield Beach
Post by: Lady Kett on January 23, 2011, 08:32:08 PM
Hi all,

It is official, jury duty has been deferred and my trusty Sidekick and I will be traveling to Florida to go to FlaRF/Deerfield Beach on 2/12 and 2/13. We will actually be arriving Friday 2/11 and leaving on Wednesday 2/16 so we are looking for any amusements which the locals consider "don't miss". We are big museum buffs, and already have Auryn's info on the Boca Raton Museum, and definitely plan on hitting that!

Anything other suggestions on things we should not miss while we are there, would be most welcome! Good restaurant suggestions are welcome also! We will have a rental car and reasonable driving distance is not a problem at all.

Squeee~ Can't wait! :)

So happy to hear you'll be making it down to the faire! I won't be able to make so have some extra fun for me ok ;)

You mentioned about museums and some spots to check out while you're down in the area. You could always check out the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens http://www.morikami.org/ (http://www.morikami.org/). I think it's only about 20min away from the faire site. I visited last August during the Bon Festival and really enjoyed the grounds. The scenery makes for some nice pictures.

Have a safe trip down!

Huzzah!

We'll be down for the whole weekend, from Central Florida. It's about a four-hour drive, and I don't like sandwiching a faire visit between two four-hour drives. So I'll either take Friday and Monday off, or just leave early on Friday and take Monday off.

We're not really into museums, but perhaps we could meet up for dinner Friday evening.

OOhhh how fun,
you guys are coming down to my neck of the woods.

Lady Kett, where will you be staying??
iain, same question

Morikami is prety cool- been there a few times. The gardens are lovely and there is usually some beautiful Japanese art on display. You can do the whole thing in a couple of hours.

As far as museums, they are kinda spread out all over the place so it depends on the kind of museum you like.

As far as food, one of my favorite places is this little mom and pop bbq join called Mississippi sweets- the best pulled pork sandwich I have ever had. its about 6 minutes away from the Boca Art museum.
My favorite Japanese/Sushi place is in Fort Lauderdale about 30 minutes away from the faire grounds, so it just depends where you guys are sleeping.

Funny enough, one of the best places to eat is the publix greenwise marketplace that is in Boca- 15-20 min or so north of Faire.
Theres lots to eat around here so just depends on what you guys like.

If either of you are into wildlife/nature I would definitely suggest an air boat tour of the everglades or Gumbo Limbo off the beach in Boca.

I live on Lake Monroe. The last thing I want to do is see or hear another airboat.  ;)

I have not yet booked it -- I plan to do that today -- but we've always stayed at La Quinta on 12th Avenue near I-95 in Deerfield Beach. We're in their rewards program, and it's a quick jaunt from there to Faire.

With your restaurant tips, this is already shaping up to be a better trip.

Hehehe
no problem.

oohh I know where that is.

If you want to make the drive into west palm, my all time favorite place is O'Sheas- AWESOME irish pub with fantastic gravy and shepherd's pie and lamb stew  ;D.

There is Stir Crazy in the Boca Mall- yummy Asian fusion style chain restaurant.
Let me think on it some more

Lady Kett, if you and your husband are up for an adventure, consider driving across the glades and making a visit to Sarasota. It's about a three hour drive door to door from Deerfield Beach. We are home to the Ringling Museum. A real treasure of Florida, with John and Mabel's Italian Renaissance styled home on the bay, and their wonderful collection of Renaissance, Medieval, and Baroque art.

Been to the Boca mall. Some nice upscale places you don't see at the typical mall.

We are staying at the Hampton Inn on W Hillsboro Blvd in Deerfield Beach. Dinner on Friday sounds fantastic, we should land in Ft Lauderdale around 12:30 PM and then, you can probably guage how fast we'll arrive in Deerfield Beach better than we can!

A drive is certainly not out of the question. All day Monday and Tuesday are ours to meander wherever we may!
