Title: Game of Thrones
Post by: Ryk Rakham on January 26, 2011, 10:53:09 PM
Okay, one more. The HBO mini-series "Game of Thrones" looks to be a possible winner. Starts this late winter....       http://www.hbo.com/game-of-thrones/index.html

If this is based on the book, I definitely want to see it!

It is based on the books, I understand went to great effort to cast the characters well....unlike the Tudors.

Hey, if it's on HBO it's a big plus for me (free with my cable package).  I'm getting tired of having to rent or buy DVD's because a series is only on Showtime.

I just ordered HBO, specifically because I DO NOT want to miss this series.
I was also looking at the t-shirts...I like the one that says "winter is coming"....though right about now those words arent the most comforting, lol. ::)

I have been looking over the trailers and gone on a couple of sites to see casting. I think they have done very well with the casting, probably because the author is involved?
In particular I thought Jaime Lassiter was exactly as I would have pictured him and Sean Bean makes an excellent Eddard Stark. Just to name a couple.

I have been waiting for somebody to do something like this for years. Unfortunately, no cable for me. Guesse I'll have to wait for Netflix. Blasted darnations.

Holy cow, this show was good! Hubby is a HUGE fan of the novels, so we got HBO just to watch.  He was entranced, and honestly, I need to go read the series now.

After the season ends.  Don't want to ruin the story on myself, and it's supposed to stay true to the first book.

It's been about a year since I reread the series again and the first episode looked spot on.  I'd like them to impart a bit of time passage though.  That month of travel for the royal caravan seemed to be only take a day.  That's been a peeve of mine in many recent productions.  Sense of time passage.

I watched part of one episode last night. The poor boy at the end you are right.  Very entertaining though. With all these new 'period' shows on cable now, this one I really liked.
Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: Hospitaller on April 26, 2011, 02:49:59 PM
Of all the period pieces currently showing (Game of T's/Camelot/Borgias) I am liking the acting, storyline, and general "feel" of this one best. Perhaps it's the freshness of the story vs. the overdone Camelot, or the believable character plots vs. the historically backed Borgias. Can't say why. Still...enjoying each of them and giving a big HUZZAH! for the networks creating these loverly series. ;D

I'm hoping they can stretch it for 3+ seasons to cover the entire series in decent depth.  There's so many story lines that intertwine.

Just curious but who is everyones favorite character so far? Is it a different one from when you read the books?
I think they did the casting particularily well.

Post by: Cofeeguru on April 30, 2011, 01:20:36 PM
Arya Stark and Tyrian Lannister (I think I have both names right) are my favoites so far, though Daenerys is climbing up there, too.
Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: Mairte on April 30, 2011, 01:47:54 PM
Yeah Arya Stark definitely. And I didnt think that I would like the actor that plays Jaime Lannister? But I think he is GREAT in the role!
Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: Grov on April 30, 2011, 02:22:47 PM
Definitely Tyrion and Daenerys.  Tyrion is great start to finish.  He sees the Game for what it is and doesn't take things too seriously, unless it needs to be taken serious. Daenerys is developing nicely, in character and womenhood.  She's certainly asserting herself as a wife now.

Favorite characters Arya and Tyrion, but Petyr Baelish(Littlefinger) looks the most like i pictured in the books. Would it have been that hard to give Tyrion the mismatched eyes and a hump to be a proper "grotesque little dwarf." Maybe i am just picky. The changes in dialogue are driving me crazy, but overall i am quite happy with the results.

Only 70 days till the Dance begins

Personally I find the guy who plays Tyrion as a very good cast. JMO.
I was thinking about this last night. Say you HAD to pick a house of Westeros? My first choice would be Stark (of course, being located in MN makes me a little prejudice  ;) ) and my second would be Martell.
Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: Grov on May 03, 2011, 11:41:55 AM
It's hard for me to settle on one House.  Lannister for the power and prestige.  And for the most, they protect each other.  Stark for the seclusion but it's a rough life being a Stark.  How about a Targaryan living abroad and in secret?  I think their return will be righteous.

Amy, I fully recommend the books AND the HBO series. I loved reading them as much as the Outlander books!!!
If you havent seen the new TV series yet....check out Jory, if I recall right, Ned Starks captain of the guard. And the guy who plays Jon Snow is a baby, so beyond my interest there, but WHAT a beautiful baby, lol. ;) ;D

Currently working my way through World Without End on audio (on my short commute) - it is good and quite long!

And watching Game of Thrones, Bourgias, and Camelot - I like Thrones the most so far.

I am loving the HBO series, but like most of you for Pillars of the Earth and others I have tried to read the books first.  So I am a little behind!   But don't worry, I'll catch up with you.   I am even sacrificing the last 2 books in Outlander to jump over and read G.o.T., then go back and catch up with Jamie and Claire.  (it is so nice to have someone here who knows what I am talking about!!  My husband neither reads nor rens)

Why?    It didn't seem like it was anything more than " hey, I'm in here ... don't kill the guy".     I'm assuming it has something to do with the book?

No, not just her putting her head out the window, but what was happening before. I just dont want to say too much so people can enjoy it for themselves?
I just found the look on his face quite comical, but thats me. :)
I think different parts probably mean different things to as many people anyway. I sometimes get more of a smile out of a brief look or encounter than I do the longer dialogues.

I just got done reading the first book in the series, and it has been so cool watching it unfold on TV and knowing just a little of what is coming from the book.  So far they have done an awesome job of adaptation, and  I can't wait to see how they pull off some of stuff that is coming up!!!

Now to start the second book!

I honestly didn't pick up on the gay vibe from the books but I don't think it'll impact the story much.  Sure makes Brienne's desire misplaced, haha.

This episode really kicks things into gear.  Here comes the conflict.

Maybe its just me, but I DID pick up on the gay thing. Yeah, I wonder if Brienne KNEW????? Like Grov, I cant see it being a big deal.
The part I disliked the most tonight was Jory dying. :-\

Just like I tell anyone who I am talking into reading the books, don't get super attached to any particular character because death comes to us all eventually and especially in the Game of Thrones.

Best episode yet. i did not like the exchange between Cersei and Robert, i mean seriously trying to make her out to be good person, bah. if you want to make the argument that she was trying to decide if shes going to kill him i would listen to that. While the LF and Varys conversation was enjoyable i dont see the point. Lastly when Arya is in the skulls room we do not know who the two speakers are in the book, we can assume but we dont know even through book four.

Grov i didnt pick up on the gay thing on the first read either, but Margery still a virgin,Rainbow guard, Jaime telling Loras hell stick him in more places than Renly, and Red Viper calling Loras Renly's little rose.

Things really picking up now, second half should be wild.

Margery still being a virgin could be an outright lie to gain the throne.  Easy enough to justify that.
Rainbow Guard?  That's putting modern reference into a fantasy world.  Could have just as well been due to the variety of flowers in that kingdom or prevalence of sun (meaning more rainbows being made).
I don't recall that particular boast of Jaime's or the little rose reference.
Of course, after the fact, it all fits but at the time, it didn't even dawn on me.  And now that it's laid out more plainly, I still don't see it's overwhelming impact to the story any more than Loras just being a faithful, dutiful friend would be.

I'm resisting the urge to get an episode ahead.

After hearing it, I think that the birth prophecy could still hold true, in essence.  Next book might answer that.

Opportunist Bronn is starting to carve out his spot.  And the wildling woman has arrived.  OH the story lines that are spawning...

And Viserys got his gold crown.  Not a drop of blood was spilled in the sacred place, as required.

Great. I figured no Tower of Joy scene, but was bummed about no direwolves in Bran part where Osha is introduced. Guy who plays Viserys was great in final scene. Plots upon plots now taking shape.

Has anyone heard R+L=J theory if so where do you stand (Rhaegar+Lyanna=Jon Snow)
Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: Cofeeguru on May 22, 2011, 11:51:27 PM
I was just discussing that theory with my husband, and I think it makes a lot of sense. I think it's why Ned has been so secretive, as Robert would have immediately killed the baby as a threat to him. I think it will be an interesting showdown between Jon and Danaerys when it all comes to a head.

And yes, I've been anticipating this ep for a while. Muahahahahaha!

Even in a foreign (maybe fake) language, Khal Drogo's vow was pretty awesome.

Littlefinger is a douchenozzle but he's got a good mind for the game and training wenches.  I'd like to thank the producer, director, or whomever decided to have that scene in the show.  A bit gratuitous and off story but I enjoyed it just the same.

Seems like everyone discussing the episode is talking about Littlefinger and the "training". I havent seen it yet but have already heard of people that loved it and people that hated it. This should be INTERESTING. ;D

Okay, YES!! I loved this episode as I have enjoyed each one so far. :)
The "training session" wasnt a waste of time in my eyes, and it seemed like Littlefingers conversation was also in reference to other things going on.

Season Finale tonight.  Load up on popcorn and we'll see who's still standing when the curtain falls.

Curious about Brienne's casting too.  Maybe use a man?

That bastard better not delay the next book again.  It'll be the only hold-over we have until the next season, which starts filming at the end of July.

Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: Grov on June 20, 2011, 07:37:13 AM
The Drogo/Daeny part was altered from the books a bit but we ended up in the same spot.  She's head of the bedraggles remnants of the hoard but they are hers.  A horse and a baby died for Drogo.  Then Drogo and a witch died for the other three, and magic, to be "re/born".

And speaking of reborn, We should be seeing Thoros of Myr and Beric Dondarrion again quite soon.  They have some tricks to pull off and must be set up before the Red Wedding.

I wish I had a Khaleesi like Daenerys Stormborn, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, and Mother of...those 3.

One thing I was wondering. What took Bron north of the wall in his previous travels? Had he been a man of the Nights Watch or do you think it was something else entirely?
Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: Grov on June 22, 2011, 02:42:31 PM
I don't recall Bronn's history ever being discussed, even in the slightest.  He might have been a Raider and moved south or a deserter from the Black Brothers.  Not terribly important to a side character though, I don't think.  Granted, he's got a few moments in the spotlight but unlike him, those spotlights don't last.
Title: Re: Game of Thrones
Post by: Mairte on June 22, 2011, 06:35:28 PM
In the TV series he is one of my favorite characters. LOVE the sarcasm. ;D I didnt pay too much attention to him in the written form though....
I just thought a deserter from the black watch because of the way he said "work" when asked what had brought him north of the wall.

Have not been able to see Game of Thrones as we don't have cable, but from everything I have heard they did a wonderful job. Now, if the produces of other books to movies would get the hint and do things right I may give it a thought about going back and getting the satellite. Was highly disappointed with the Sword of Truth adaptation. that starts the list. Myself I will look for the DVD collection. Thanks everyone for such enlightening reviews.

No new news as of yesterday.  A few vague references to "big named" actors to fill the holes left by the loss of Momoa and Bean but no actual names.
There are a few audition tapes up for Melisandre, Davos, and Stannis but I didn't watch them.  The comments on them were very unfavorable.

Another thing I have noticed is how differently the people I have watched even a couple episodes with react. During the weekend I watched the first and second episodes with my 14 year old niece and my dad (who insisted he wanted to see it). At the beginning I warned them both about nudity and violence. (My sister, nieces mother, said she was fine as long as there wasnt male frontal nudity and I knew there wasnt in the first couple at least.).
My NIECE loved the series and is now reading the first book.
My father cringed and commented and was extremely uncomfortable.
He left after the first episode, lol. :D
On another note, my mother, who we had told about it, would cover the side of her face every time she would come in the living room!!!

Writer Daniel Abraham and artist Tommy Patterson are adapting George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones — the novel, not the HBO show — into an ongoing series for Dynamite Comics.

Abraham says the comics will remain faithful to the novel. With 24 issues of 29 pages each, that means this adaptation will match the original nearly page for page.

The Game of Thrones comics will hit shelves starting in September,

It's my understanding that considerable effort is made to create the appropriate backdrop for each scene.  It's been a number of years since I've read the first few books, so any specifics might be lost on my memory's failings.  If you question how they can afford lavish productions, you have but to look at your bill and consider how many subscribers there are.
