Title: What could make you stop being a pirate?
Post by: Obadiah Jib on March 04, 2009, 08:40:55 PM
Is there anything that could or would (except death of course) make you turn in your Jolly Roger and stop being a pirate? ???

Being dead doesn't make you any less of a pirate.  Just less productive.   :D

What could take my attention away from the Life?  A lass that appreciates a great pair of boots...  ;) ;D

Hmm...
I would think if it became the fashion for a Pirate to be hunted as meat.

Although, even then, I would merely be off the radar and start calling myself by some other
nom de plume.

As afar as being dead, that's when SOME pirates are the most dangerous!

I suppose if some king or queen or government were crazy enough to give me letters of marque then I'd become a privateer or if somehow the rules and regulations of some country's navy were made a little more reasonable . . .

OR if me memoirs were to suddenly become a best seller and then turned into a play, THAT might lure me away from the sweet trade to become a director.  And, as all of us who have ever acted know, L'Ollonais was a pussycat compared to most directors!

The main thing that turns me off about the pirate relm is all the drama. For every group there is another group that talks crap and for every festival there is another doing the same. I just wish everyone could unite and stop all the bickering. One crew hates the other becuase they got a job that they wanted and so on. I mean people need to stick together and be happy that there are guys out there other then themselves trying to make this genre work.

We could have something ultra mega special going on here if everyone could stop backstabbing each other and just unite for the good all sea rats.

I mean take PirateCon for example...what a wunderfull thing that could have been... Maybe we all need to lay off the rum alittle while and start firing up that peace pipe...I dont know.

UNITE! Shall we?

Not one bloody thing!  I figure, once a pirate, always a pirate!

And regardin' some backstabbin' the others, well, you'll find that goin' on in any genre, and I suppose it's almost a prerequisite to bein' a pirate.  Do ya know of many in history what didn't stab one or th' other in the back, given the opportunity?  What's that they be sayin', "Take what ye can.  Give nothin' back!"

But seriously, folks, I do agree that it's pointless to be fighting between groups.  We're all out there doing the same thing and loving it!  Why make it a bloody war, for crying out loud!

It's a Pirate's Life for ME!

Historically, pirates have banded together as a matter of expedience.  Too much prey, too few predators.  But now times have grown lean.  Too little prey, too many sharks in the water.  And it does boil down to "no prey, no pay", no matter the profession.  This is where cooler heads prevail, and treaties be struck.  If there be a dispute over venue for your crew to ply their trade, then demand parloolooloo...  No, that's not it.  Pardon!  No...  parson, parsnip, parter, partner... PARLEY!!  That's it!  Demand parley.  Work it out.  Alternate weekends if that's an option.  Alternate faires if it comes to that.

But work TOGETHER, mates.  As pirates, by definition, we're already at war with the World.  Warring among ourselves... well, the World wins, yeah?  How can we let that happen?

I'm not suggesting the multifarious captains come together for some massive group hug and "Kum By Ya".  Far from it.  Anything but that.  Anyone who knows me knows that's not how I roll.  Tenuous truces, agreed upon territories until the economy improves, yes.

We need to do what we must to survive.

Lord Fig, you've hit upon the essence of it.  The wind and spray in your face, the feel of sun-warmed teak or oak under your bare feet, the creak and moan of the ship as she seeks to comply with the will of her master...  Damn, there's nothing like it in the world.  Nothing at all.

No.  Turning from the Account?  Once it's in your blood, there's no turning away.  Not for anything.

...not a damn thing.

Of course, there has been a mighty influx of we scourge of the sea as of late, thanks to the double edged sword that is Disney and Johnny Depps little take on the life. Our ranks have certainly swelled, and i personally look forward to the day when the next big thing catches, and leaves we true-er hearts to the craft of maritime wealth redistribution. until then, at least it be far easier to shop for a nice hat or new sea coat!

Governor Henry Morgan approaches you in a seedy Port Royal tavern.  His blood shot eyes lock on yours and he says, "Friend the time has come to make peace with the Spanish.  I have been given the task to round up all those who continue to raid and plunder in these waters and string them up by the neck.  I ask you to stand down and put away your cutlass and pistol.  Or I shall be forced to bring the King's justice down up you."

Now what do you do? :-\

Double over with laughter, pound the table and wipe the tears of laughter from my eyes as I say, "I love that joke!..no, seriously, you crack me up.....you...huh?..You're  NOT kidding?...oh, garcon?....some sangria and tacos, please..."

Then I would lean over the table, affording a good view of my ample cleavage and whisper, 'You know, I'm dating your nephew...."

Me answer would be the same as Black Bart Roberts. (We Roberts are pretty much cut from the same mold, though we don't share the same views on rum.)  ;)

"Tis a short life, and a merry one, says I.
But make no mistake, Sir. Ye may run me through, ye may shoot me dead, or ye may send me ta Davy Jones locker.

Either way, I'll not be swingin' from yer jibbet!

Now that we've an accord, would ye be a'posed ta a tankard 'o rum?"  ;D

I'm impressed that many of you would go toe to toe with Captain Henry Morgan!

Of course history tells us what happened to those brave souls...

What if it was Woodes Rogers who asked you to give up the sweet trade?

I'd say 'Wrap me in silks and I might consider it, Mr. Rogers.'

Oh, that just didn't sound right.

Same answer, Mate.

It's not about takin' th' risk 'o die'n. We all be sail'n them seas sooner 'r later. It's about livin' ta the fullest with wot time ye have.

Most all pirates met with a death that were sooner'n what would be considered nat'ral. But as Sir William Wallace said, (via Mel Gibson), "Every man dies, not every man really lives."

Me answer remains the same.

*I'd also not be foolish enough ta be makin' such a statement without a drawn and cocked pistol pointin' at either one 'o 'em under the table.*  ;) :D

LITTLE KNOWN TIDBIT OF NAVAL HISTORY.

clip_image001

The U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers).

However, let it be noted that according to her ship's log, "On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum."

Her mission: "To destroy and harass English shipping."

Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum.

Then she headed for the Azores , arriving there 12 November. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.

On 18 November, she set sail for England . In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchant ships, salvaging only the rum aboard each.

By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland . Her landing party captured a whiskey distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn. Then she headed home.

The U. S. S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February 1799, with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum, no wine, no whiskey, and 38,600 gallons of water .
*Food and drynk like this might persuade me.......*

Might as well have posted the rest of the story, including the bit about it being pretty much a fable.

http://forbesontech.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/09/fun-facts-on-old-ironsides-from-the-days-before-the-us-navys-ban-on-alcohol-aboard-ships-the-uss-con.html (http://forbesontech.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/09/fun-facts-on-old-ironsides-from-the-days-before-the-us-navys-ban-on-alcohol-aboard-ships-the-uss-con.html)

Fixed it for you.

Either way, of course her mission was to "harass and destroy English shipping." She was a naval warship, that's what they did. Such operations along with continual aggressive incursions into Britain's Canadian territories eventually led to the War of 1812.

Well, just goes to show that you can not believe everything you read in black n white.......
For every story, there's a counter story. Eggs, are bad for you, no they're good for you, no they're bad, no good.... so on....
All true stories are those that you were in attendance while the storied history was being made.
and without pictures or video we'll all just have to make up our own minds.

However, THIS "story" might persuade me to give up the pirate life......... Not.
Because the Navy has too many rules.
