Hubby and I plan to attend Sunday, Sept 1st, and most probably one day on the second weekend.   I have to work Saturday morning, and by the time we drive out there it will be about 4pm on opening day.
The Quad City Celtic games are on the third weekend in September, and we will not attend the closing weekend unless we can wrap the games up on time.  Last year we attended the last day as mundanes and watched the closing show, which is always fun.
Joust Evolution (same company as KCRF joust) will be performing before the royal court.

See you there!

Opening weekend looks to be in the 90's.  These nobles may need to try week 2 instead.

Brother Gregory-Should you attend the 2nd weekend, look for us on Saturday, Sept 7th.
A Renaissance Bubble Machine (Des Moines edition) will be making it's first appearance at DMRF!
Since our grandson's birthday party is the 8th, we must be back in Omaha then.
Will you be on cast at Riverssance this year?
Sunshine-We will look for you there.

If next weekend in Des Moines  is anything like the last, it will be sunny,  in the 90's and humid.
That doesn't seem to faze the local 'danes -All 3 weekends have always been well attended unless it rains, and then they come right back when it stops.  ;D
There is shade and shaded seating in the pub and a central feast hall,  where the royals hold court, and there are picnic tables and  seating in there for about 100.
There is also shaded seating at the fairy glen at the base of the Brad Nelson memorial fairy tree, and in Sherwood forest, where the forge, artisans, archery, pirate stage, and living history exhibits are.  The creek helps it stay cooler down there too.
We will be there on Sunday, Sept 1st.   I plan to bring neck coolers and a basket for water, and I will probably carry a parasol too.  Hopefully the second weekend will be cooler, and we plan to attend then too.

  Nice writeup!

We usually stop by Casey's for the $2.00 discount coupons.
We will be getting the 2 day pass and split it between the days we know we will be there, and if we are in town closing day, we will be there in mundane garb.

Can't wait to see the new entertainers and check out the new food vendors!
I just saw that  Sauboo the Troll will be back!  (Yay) First weekend only. (Poo).

From the DMRF facebook page: "Coupons have been placed at Casey's General Stores in the following areas: DM metroplex, Ankeny, Huxley, Ames, Story City and Pleasant Hill. If you stop by a Casey's and they are out (or never received them), please let us know so we can get some delivered."

Definitely get coupons!!!!  :)

we can use the coupons on the 2 day passes I presume?

You couldn't last time, I don't think, since there's already a "discount" from the standard fare if you're getting a multiple-day pass. I remember not being able to use any coupons but picking some up for friends who were only there one day.

I checked the website-You can use the weekend passes on any two days of the faire.   Woot!
Makes sense-if you want to do the Romance and Celtic (like we do) you can do just one day of each.

Weather looks like it's finally going to cool off (somewhat)....Huzzah!  Opening day (Today!)  in the 90's, Sunday high 80's, and Monday just 80.  Sunny all 3 days, with the only chance of rain: Sunday morning before 8 am.
Headed out after work today, and will be getting in town about 4pm. We plan to hop over to the park (sans garb) to check a few things and hopefully attend the dedication of the first tree in the future memorial grove Saturday evening after faire.
   See you there!

Wonderful time at faire yesterday!  We were there from 10-2pm.   I was honored to finally meet Lord Fredrick (Lady Kathleen did a gorgeous job on that doublet and sleeves).

The Renaissance Bubble Machine (II) made it's debut at the DMRF- It was going full blast out at the gate, with plenty of children dancing around it in pursuit of bubbles.
We have a Pet Pub this year for the furbabies to rest, cool off and get a drink and treats; look for it under the Sign of the Paw.  Sponsored by Petco, and Raccoon River Animal Rescue.
We will be back on Saturday, Sept 7th for  the second weekend, we would do both, but my grandson's birthday party is on Sunday.
I will have my hat issue sorted out by then-Thanks to the great advice provided by Felicity of 'Fyne Hats by Felicity'.  She is moving on to KCRF next, so look her up-Her goods are all personally hand made and HA.  She does custom orders.
Today the temps will be around 80.  Lovely weather!

We just realized that we are free to do faire next weekend. that will leave us free this weekend to do the Plattsmouth event.
Duh.... The Celtic games aren't until the 21st  this year-The last two years they have overlapped the closing weekend of DMRF, so we assumed this was no different.  I have vacation both weekends...14-15 and 21-22.
Regretfully, we will not attend this weekend..hopefully it will be cooler on the 14th!
  Huzzah!

We had a splendid time on Saturday...I understand DMRF might have set an attendance record!
The weather was perfect and the crowds were large and energetic.   We arrived with the grandkids just before noon, and the parking lot was already full and going to overflow, and peak attendance is usually about 1 pm.  We were planning on maybe 3 hours with the young kids (1 and 4)- but they were having so much fun we ended up staying until closing!
  Can't wait till next year!

I saw Sunshine in her Peacock outfit last Saturday (14th).  I hope she got some pictures!

For those who FB, you can see the photos I took last weekend on my page.  I have an excellent one of Lord Fredrick in that lovely doublet Lady Kathleen made, the colors came out beautifully.  I have to transfer them to PB and then link here if I want to show them on this forum.
Lord Clisto made it into a couple of mine; he flits about like that hummingbird that was hanging around the morning glories next to the fountain.  I took a couple of lovely ones of Lady Rosalind's new Garnet Gown.  That silk is gorgeous, the hat is so cute!
  Beautiful job.

It certainly is good news!
I wonder what the crowds count really was-when you consider that the kids under 5 don't count at the gate.   There were lots of little ones in strollers and wagons.
People started showing up in large numbers before noon this year, when they usually don't hit the gate until 1pm or so... The first joust audience at 12:30 was huge and noisy.  there was standing room only a good 20 minutes before the show started, and that was with the additional bleachers borrowed from the pirate stage this year.
In fact, every show at every stage had full audiences, lots of energy and the performers were loving it.
Placing the MARS encampment (with all those lovely multicolored tents) in the chapel field next to the list is a great idea.  So near the jousting field-it really looked like a visiting nobility encampment.

Sorry I took so long; things got remarkably busy after the faire ended, and being at the Sleepy Hollow haunted houses these last couple weekends hasn't helped. I've finally caved and gotten a facebook page (just for faire, but it seems the best way to keep in contact with everyone outside of this forum), and am now slowly getting pictures up. :) You can find them at the book of faces slash DesMoinesSunshine. It's a public fanpage, so you can see the pictures even if you don't have an account.

I'm not going to put up allllll of the pictures I took, since that's quite a lot, but if anyone's got a request for something I neglected to upload or wants a complete set of something I only put one or two pictures up of, just send me a note and I'll zip 'em together for you.
