A very nice tribute to your father, Charlotte. I was quite touched to read it.
My father was also a first-generation American and fought in World War II. Although he was Army, he spent a large portion of his war service as a Ship's Gunner in the South Pacific. He was stationed in Australia and New Guinea, and he kept in touch with friends he made there for the rest of his life.
I also had a brother who served in Vietnam. He was one of the lucky ones who made it home. Then, shortly after announcing his wife's pregnency and buying a new home, he was killed by a drunk driver.
I miss them both dearly.
