A lot of people at events carry their secret survivor drink around in various containers disguised as an innocent accoutrement to their garb.
I had a small metal Celtic flask (sadly it got a puncture hole somehow and became useless) that I put my favorite drink in, Rootbeer Schnapps. (I'm looking for a new one if someone knows of where the Celtic metal flasks are for sale on-line, let me know!)
BTW- If you haven't tried it, do so - really good!
So what is your secret potion to carry around with you?
Often I have a wee bit of brandy in mine. Though one time I brought a tiny emergency bottle of rum to TRF for Teach.
RumbaRue, look on Ebay for a new flask, they have a huge selection. I've seen flasks with Celtic knotwork listed in the past.
My favorite potion is a mixture of Licor 43 and Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay coconut rum.

That sounds good!
As for me, nothing so fancy. A good single malt to keep me warm on the cold Faire morn is all I need. Lately the Scotch of choice has been the Balvenie.
I just got a new flask that is not only larger in volume than my previous, but has a hinge to keep from losing the top..... brilliant that. The only problem is, I don't have a pouch large enough to fit it in. So my first stop next Saturday morning at Faire will be a leather merchant :)
My flask says "Witches Brew", and contains Bailey's!!!!
My flask usually has Bailey's as well. I've had rum in it before, but warm rum isn't as tasty to me as warm Bailey's. Vodka fails for that one reason.

Why, what a co-incidence! So is mine!
We can thank Lady Alicia for the Licor 43 indoctrination!
No wonder we drink together! ;D
Although sometimes I like the Licor 43 straight out of the flask.
*sigh* It really is too bad we can't fit frozen mudslides in there. Guess we have to move it to the beach bar then.
If its not Maker's Mark Bourbon, its sure to be a 50/50 mixture of Jameson Irish Whisky and Irish Mist...very good to put a sparkle on a day!
Depends on the flask... as I tend to carry more than one when I am carrying... One will have a well aged single malt (15 - 20 years or older preferred), and the other will most likely have Captain Morgan's Private Stock. Occasionally I'll add a third flask which will carry Jim Beam Black in it.
I've got a Celtic flask that fits perfectly in my old belt pouch. (And, yes, got it off Ebay - don't remember the seller though.) It usually has Loki in it, but if we're pirates, it'll have rum.
Mead, and occasionally a nip of vanilla pecan liqueur or Atholl brose. Purely for medicinal purposes, of course. *cough*
I carry my special homemade cordials. Good for what ails you!
Speaking of mead. My good friend Vi-King and I make home made mead for TRF every year. I'll be there this weekend and though I don't drink mead, I usually have a boda bad of it on me for "medicinal purposes" as well. Say hello to me at the Prince of Wales at noon and I'll let you have a taste. It's QUITE good. We usually add a hint of peach or apple to spice it up.
~Hawkwind~
Bacardi Select rum. My flask fits nicely into one of my belt pouches - it's now officially the "flask pouch".

Flask Number one- Butterrum Loki
Flask Number two- Lokiberry Loki
Flask Number three- Almond Loki
Flask Number four- Cinnamon Loki
Yes I do carry four flasks on me in faire on pretty much any day. I love to share!
When you see my belt with all those pouches hanging from it... now you know why
*And there is also a fifth of rum in the boda bag that comes in with me to. The flavor depends on the mood of the day, currently it is parrot bay coconut (Thanks Tommy!)*
Ahh, my favorite, on a cold day (ask Greg at TRF about this one) is B & B (Benedictine and Brandy) when it has been "bodice-warmed" all day by my wife. Mmm, nothing like it!
I carry a good Scotch normally one of the Glenmorangie.
Did once have someone ask what kind of wine I have in my flask me standing there in a kilt being accuses of carrying wine in me flask. Good think the King's glove was up or I would have had to challenge over an insult like that.

That might have been me....teasing you....since I carry Brandy in mine... ;D
A touch of the Irish (Jamesons 18 year).
Loki...yep...definately Loki...YUM! ;D
Since the past few years at KC and St. L have almost all been all warm all the time, I like to either put some cold Buttershots in, or rum punch (based on the recipe we had at PyrateCon...mmmmMMMMM). But we usually just bring in our own green apple cider for the mugs, too, and that hits the spot nicely!
Ice Cold Buttershots! :D

Personally I have one of those glass lightbulb bottles in a worked leather holder that's usually filled with vanilla rum for mixing with soft drinks. I also have a larger belt hung bottle holder that's been known to contain various vintages of loki in a decoratively shaped bottle.
Single malt scotch is in my flask! Usually Lismore! YUMMM!
I don't like much sweet stuff.
Single malt scotch. Either Laphroaig 12 years old or Usquebagh(sp)
If I run out at the last minute then Crown Royal in any of the 3 major distillings.

A Money saving tip?
A friend told us that a bar she used to work in used a Britta water filter pitcher to run cheaper vodka through and were able to pass it off as a more expensive brand. It supposedly actually works, because it removes the impurities that are removed by extra step that is used by more expensive brands, and the filter can be uses multiple times.
-Thought it might be a money saving tip for the recession.
Don't think it would work for other booze. For other alcohols it would probably remove some of the bits that add the flavor.
Leave it to a frugal Scotsman, eh. :o

I saw this on Myth Busters. Apparently it works
to a degree, but only on vodka.
Yeah, I mentioned it on my blog and someone told me they actually filtered it several times on Mythbusters to get it to work. Humbug.
I always carry a round, pewter flask in my sporran (pouch) filld with Macallan 12. I also bring along a large pewter mug that I hang from my belt and occasionally have filled with what's good in the cask at the TX Ren Fest.
Tried an interesting concoction this past weekend dubbed Smithee's Apple Pie. "The taste of apple pie in a cup" with a kick, eh. A fine homemade remedy. 8)
Um, air. Because I haven't filled it yet.
But I'm getting good ideas!

It's very smooth, not so peaty, and it's a bit sweet from being aged in sherry casks.

Well, truthfully I've never even had scotch before. So I wouldn't have known if it was bad, lol.
I recommend you try one of the Speysides (single-malts distilled with water from this river), which tend to be aged in sherry casks. Macallan is one, but drink it gingerly.
ooh ooh ooh Macallan. ;)
One of the few scotches that tempt me away from El Duque.

Willa's Water mmmm yummy
What's Willa's Water?
butterscotch loki made by Willa Swallow
I'll have to keep that in mind. I'm always looking for new things to try!
I went to a Celtic festival at the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Houston, TX, yesterday, and I took my flask. I refilled with Macallan 18 and shared it with Zardoz's wife. She is becoming a fan of the stuff. Of course, Zardoz was there along with a couple of other rennies. I remember their real names, but don't know their RF monikers, so I'll leave that them.
I'm getting intrigued by Willa's Water!

I was a bad pirate last weekend, carrying amaretto inmy flask. Though I made up for it by drinking plenty of rum when we got back to camp.
Faire opens this weekend at BARF, temps are supposed to be in the mid 40's for opening cannon. Just inside the gate to the right is the coffee/latte/cappuccino/hot chocolate stand. It will be my first stop, right after parlaying with good Queen Catherine and King Henry.
In to my hanging goblet with the latte will go Kamora Coffee Liqueur, my current favorite secret potion
(http://www.drinkswap.com/images/bevfull/4981.jpg)
I still have some Macallan 18 in the sporran flask and will take it to happy hour. But, I'm not likely to have any, but may share with the uninitiated.
I'm filling my new flask with a 50/50 blend of Liqor 43 and Parrot Bay Coconut rum.
Athena and Welsh Wench endorsed it earlier in the thread, and I've gone wrong following Wench's drink recommendations ;D

Well, since whiskey (of many different types) is my poison of choice, then I suspect this year, my flask will contain Gentleman Jack or something straightforward and simple, like Bushmill's or maybe Maker's Mark. We'll see.
Having whiskey on my person at faire for the first time ever will be interesting. Maybe I'll actually talk to other humans. Who knows.

We can share a drink or two as that is pretty much what I keep in my flask.. Well, Crown actually, but that's because I keep getting bottles of it as gifts for my birthday... It's very strange. It's utterly ubiquitous. You'd think it would be a drink everyone in the world had had at some point.
No big deal. I've never had Crowne Royal before either. Single-malts, only. I've had Royal Crown Cola, but that doesn't count.

I've heard this before from your or another. You may need to prove this to me, Z. We'll need to trade flasks sometime for a friendly challenge.
Whisk(e)ys , like beers, have almost unlimited varieties, I try a lot, I like a few, but I always seem to come back to a couple favorites that I was raised on.
I tried 2 new to me Irish Whiskeys on St.Pats, One was mid price blended called "Feckin" ::) that was pretty good, nice and smooth. It's only downside (to me) was it's from Co. Down which is a Northern county.
I also tried an expensive single malt called Michael Collins, wanted to like anything named after the big man, but I thought it tasted like paint thinner :P
But Jack, always ready to try new stuff! Are you going to the Vampire party ? I'll bring some along..
Well since I don't drink alcohol and since a long day at the faire can cause a person to sweat a lot and lose electrolytes this year I will bring powdered gatorade mix and put in in water I buy at the faire or dispense from a faucet.
Yeah yeah I know, not drinking alcohol/ale at a renaissance faire is probably like asking for milk at a saloon in the wild west (Back to the Future reference)...but gatorade is a practical secret "potion".

Quote from: Lady Ashlyn on April 07, 2009, 02:48:24 PM
What exactly is Liqor 43?
Liquor 43 is nectar of the gods. It's a vanilla liqueur made in Spain that is great as an after dinner drink.
It is very different from vanilla schnapps.
'Cuarenta y Tres' is Spain's leading liqueur and has been made in Cartagena by Diego Zamora since 1924 although it's origins go back many centuries. The name derives from the forty three ingredients that go to make up this fine liqueur. With it's smooth vanilla and citrus flavours it is excellent on the rocks or in cocktails.
Sounds lovely! Thank you. I will have to try it!
For the San aNotnio Highland Games this past weekend, I had Isle of Jura in my flask. It has a smooth, peaty taste, and goes down good. In return, I had some Balvenie from a piper buddy.
That sounds quite exotic . . . .
FINALLY PUT SOMETHING IN MY FLASK!
Rasberry Mint Loki - but we call the recipe Princess' Folley in memory of the cat that made the Loveland Castle it's home
Grey Goose or Tito's :)
My new favorite is called American Honey. It's a honey liqueur made by Wild Turkey. Honey & Bourbon, smooth going down, heats you up really well.
As much as I hate to ask..what exactly is Loki? I've never heard of it or had it. Do you make it, buy it? *hides from cabbages that will surely be flung her way*

Currently don't own a flask but i'd probably copy a friend and carry around fruity concoctions like a royal f.....
the best taste i had this year was dr. pepper with coconut rum and vanilla vodka.
Someone was telling me they had a cherry chocolate rum but they didn't mention the brand. The guy at the liquor store today told me he hadn't heard of it, but that Seagram's was really getting into the wild flavors so maybe it was them.
This sounds interesting enough to tempt me since I already like pineapple rum.

Hopefully I'll have my own loki made for next season. Going to try my hand at a coconut flavor. Yum!
Soju is excellent! Bad hangovers though.
My brother, BlackWatch and I won last years Drunken Gnome Loki Challenge with Cinnamon Apple... our first time making Loki! This year we have 2-3 types we're working on...

I've had one bad hangover from Soju, but I had drank A LOT of it. And if I recall, that was the same night my best friend and I had also been drinking honest-to-gods moonshine from West Virgina. ::shudder::
My nephew and wife are Soju lovers... You can utube their dog named Soju. Where can you find the real Korean kind? I understand what we find here is not the same.

That's a good question. My favorite Korean restaurant in Dallas serves a brand that I absolutely love, and I think they sell it in one of the stores in the Koreatown. I would think you could order stuff on the internet as well.
Last year it was Fairy Juice with a kick.
See, the original Fairy Juice I made earlier in the year before MDRF got dubbed that because "it tastes like pressed fairies!" or so I was told. Very sweet.
Then I tried making it with Van Gogh espresso flavored vodka (instead of plain vodka) and that's where the "kick" came from. It was fun seeing people guess what it tasted like. I even got waffles 'n syrup, once. :) Not sure how that came about, LOL.
Right now I've got waiting a cinnamon flavored fairy juice. Haven't tasted it yet, but if it works, I'm sure I'll have some at MDRF.
I still have some Macallan 12 left in my sporran flask from the San Antonio Highland Games. I may empty its contents this weekend!
I usually smuggle in a 1 Liter Mt Dew bottle, filled with 1 1/3 bottles of Oliver Mead. Mug filled with discretion, of course.

Tullymore Dew. Although this year, I think it may be The Balvenie. Mmmmmmmm
have you ever tried Tullamore Dew mixed with irish Mist? Yummo!
I like to bring an empty flask along with whatever filled ones I stash about my person, just in case anyone has extra Loki for sharing... :D
might have loki, might have a homemade pecan liqueur, might have mead. Bring a cup:)
You want to know the honest truth? Water. I keep mine full of water. I hate heatstroke. I would love to make it a flask full of Highland Park 15 year, but let me restate- I HATE HEATSTROKE!! Although on Talk Like A Pirate Day, I did carry a flask full of grog. That sucked. It got all warm. Warm rum is terrible. So there you go! Water, single malt scotch, or rum are my potions of choice.
Water.
Most things don't taste very good warm, and like Nighthawk said; heatstroke sucks.
for more years then I can count I carried a bota bag full of rum and kaluha (sp) The Gods have decreed that I can no longer enjoy the fire of any alcohol as out of the blue I have become allergic to it, no kidding, swollen face, neck, bright red and can't breathe and killer headaches after the smallest amount. I gave up trying :( The Doctor confirmed...can't even take meds with it anymore, no more drug induced sleep for me when I get a cold...
I miss the taste of some of my favorites....sigh* it SUCKS!
Lemon Heaven Loki, this season. ;)

Might be seeing you! LOL
Have cup - will travel!
My flask usually has Vanilla vodka (absolut or stoli) in it.
If I'm toting a flask, it's got Jack Daniels in it.
Rum

That sounds yummy! Save some for me!
Ok...someone please enlighten me. What is Loki?
Merlin, you'll be at TRF for AHE this year, won't you?
next year will probably be some peppermint paddy loki but this last year i had a micture of Rum chata with curzan rum cream kept chilled.
Rum Chata is a mixture of rum with cream and cinnamon, Curzan rum cream is a micture of rum and chocolate cream. Both good by themself but great mixed.
I had Fire and Ice in mine.
Mix 1/2 with Hot 100 with 1/2 Rumpleminze.
Nice minty kick at the end. Definitely a sipping thing though.
I got the recipe from one of the Dregs.

No...afraid that's out of the question this year.
But you're going to be there at least once this year, right? If so, when you run into anyone from McLot or Phoenix Risen, just ask if you can sample the Loki you've been hearing so much about...
Ummm... prepare yourself, though, because it is NOTHING like Jack!
rust nails in one and dream sicle loki in the other
Ooooh... I remember Dreamcicles! I wanna sample that one!!!
Right now I'm carrying Sheridan's coffee liquer.

Always happy to share come around camp or find me inside.
I'm sure you've said before, Sir R, but where will you be camping AHE?
Drambuie in one, Orange/Cranberry Loki in the other.

With Phoenix Risen on AHE will have both the dreamcicle and the peach loki with me that weekend.

Then I will definitely see you there, because we'll be right there as well, in that corner area with the the Bayou Scoundrels. Same camp, really, just different fire pits! Awesome!!!
Apple pie....well, my oldest daughter makes it using apple juice, apple cider, Everclear and cinnamon sticks. It goes down smooth and has a KICK like a mule. I also like different kinds of rum mixed drinks. :)
Cruzan Black Strap Molassas Rum - like Aunt Jemima pancake syrup, with a kick. In fact one morning I splooshed onto pancakes at breakfast - YUMMY!
Has anyone mentioned The Kraken (Rum)? What's your opinion if you've tried it?
Cinnamon Aftershock, or a good rum... why limit yourself to only one flask? They're just costuming, right? .....
Irish Mist or Jameson's
I'm thinking maybe pineapple rum this year... It even tastes good slightly warm, although it doesn't look as if it will be all that hot for AHE this year, anyway.
We had some coconut tequila at KCRF last weekend that was quite tasty (dang pirates :P )
Grant's scotch or Cruzan light rum--depends on how hot it is!

Was this something they made up for you, or does it come bottled like that?

Nope - it was a purchased product. They actually had a raffle and you could win some that came in a clear glass botttle that was a pirate head. Now am not sure aboutn the bottle, but you can buy the tequila. I am going to find some this weekend.
Hmm... reading this post and others on here has me getting ready to make an attempt at making loki--- prob start with the 'traditional' recipe first, til i think i've got it worked out, then start to experiment...
In my flask is a bit of the Macallan 12. I took a flask with me (in my luggage) on my business trip to Detroit. Last night was the anniversary of my father's death and I wanted to toast to his memory.
The Pink Pirate has two flasks and he cant' decide which to fill with which. Does he put the Agua D'Bolivia (Caffinated Alcohol, that will get you moving for gate!) or Pyrate Rum. Or does he just put simple JD in it to mix with soda.

A Jack Daniels man?!?! He and I are going to get along famously!
I didn't have to drink from my flask last night. After dinner a colleague treated a couple of us to the drink of our choice. The amll hotel bar had only two single-malts on the shelf (Glenfiddich and Glenlivet), so I had a dram of the Glenfiddich. Delicious after a heavy meal.

The solution would be 3 flasks!
Dona is wise!
Try your local liquor store.
I see them at WalMart from time to time...
Some faire shops will carry them. Like the leather shops, because they make holsters and hangers for them.

I have a question. Where can a person just walk into a store and buy a hip flask? I've never seen them on my shopping trips except at "things remembered".
Ebay - If you don't want something fancy you can get them cheap.

The flamingo's got their's from walmart of all places, by the check out counters but we did have to look for them. The local liquor store had them but they were plastic with metal spout.
Last weekend Lady Jai showed me the one she got at Walmart from the, get this, Halloween section - it had spiderwebs and spiders on it...
Is it just me, or is that pretty strange... oh pick up a spiderman costume for my 9 year old and get him a flask to go with it?
And liqour store should have them.
What's in my flask? Nothing....*sigh*...the Season is over....

I must live in a sad place. The liquor store did not carry them. My Walmart had canteens. Online I go!
I bought mine at Wal-Mart. Did you look on the clip strips in the Beer and Wine section?
Amazon.com has a good selection. Here were two that seemed fitting for the folks here:

I was at the Salado Scottish Clan & Highland Games earlier this month and filled my flask with Macallan 12. I forgot to bring the flask out both days, so I'm (slowly) emptying the contents into my gullet day by day.
Someone gave me some Viking mead to try recently. It was great tasting, but they lost me when they said it looked like day old dishwater.
Sorry....not going in my flask.
I took a flask filled again with Macallan 12 to the San Antonio Highland Games this past weekend. Yummy!

I think that was probably aimed at the adult witch-wannabe in the spider pattern lace dress.
Actually, I'm in Lordsburg, NM, this week, and my flask is in my suitcase. Believe me, there's NOTHING to do here, but watch TV, or go to Silver City. Honestly, I haven't tasted a drop. I fogot what and when I put something in it.
