Title: New Home, New Look, New Faces
Post by: FaireMare on May 18, 2008, 07:50:47 PM
I know there is an introduction thread on the main pages.... but In reading threads, and now with all of us restarting at the same time, I thought this would be an excellent way to say hello to everyone.  If you are one of our goddesses, please post that too.

I will start. Please follow the same format for easier reading.  ;D .....OH! and SMALL Pictures Please. ((the only "small" one I have was from 2002 ))

Garbing Experience: I've been sewing since 2004 when I rebelled against ill-fated sewing "lessons."  I've mostly done fairwear while learning garment construction (lots of skirts, bodices, odds and ends for relatives and friends); more recently expanded into more H/A work (a gamurra-inspired linen gown, a complete 18th Century ensemble of linen and wool, and just starting a recreation of a c. 1500 French tapestry gown).  I've been drafting patterns and draping my own mockups for a couple of years now, but I just discovered the joy of working with a truly *wonderful* pattern, and am looking forward to breaking out the Margo Andersons with this next project!

Garbing experience: My Mom taught me how to sew by hand and on her old Singer machine when I was 8 years old. I have been sewing for over 40 years. I have made all kinds of things for family and friends, such as shirts, blouses, skirts, pants, jackets, sleepwear, baby clothes, doll clothes, underwear, etc. I first started researching/sewing garb in 1998, when I bought my shop. I made garb for everyone in my family that helped me at my shop. As an artist, I lean more toward fantasy garb, but I find historical garb equally fascinating!  ;D

I'm Nancy. I'll be acting in the MiRF this summer as an  Italian Flower Seller who sings. I'm currently fighting to get my toile to lie correctly without wrinkles and am ready to cook and eat the next kid who thinks punching Lady Madge (body double, hangs from the ceiling), is funny.

I've been garbing for years, but let's just saw authenticity and finish work was not really my forte. I've changed, I swear.

My "headshot" from my audition. My husband took it the day before. Yes, I'm a pro :)

I've been sewing for twenty years now, but not well. However, you should see my bloomers! Flat felled seams, not an unfinished bit in site and authentic. I've already learned a lot here.

Oh, and special kusdos to my husband who, literally, took apart my Janome Serger and put it back together when it seized. He saved me a ton of money and there are no parts left over. Bless him. It makes the idea of washing sixteen yards of cotton jacquard slightly more appealing, since there will be less ravel.

So yeah, I'm in the trial and error stage. I haven't tried making anything other than a skirt yet, but I am thinking about eventually trying to attempt a court gown...

Garbing Experience: I've been making garb for myself and others since 1991/1992. I try to limit myself nowdays to making garb for my immediate family.
My husband and I are in the SCA and have been for many years. I've made garb for every century between 600 and 1600, though I prefer not to do Elizabethan.
I'm not 100% H/A because I refuse to wear wool undies in the Texas heat, among other issues.
Happy Sewing!

Garbing Experience: I have minimal sewing experience; I primarily made only dog pajamas prior to this.  When I started attending faires last year, I wanted to make my own peasant garb (albeit faire style, not H/A.)  By the end of the season, I was planning H/A noble garb. I've since made two noble gowns, the peasant garb, and pirate garb.  My goal for this next winter is H/A peasant or middle class garb, and an Italian gown.

Most of my garb I make myself.  I do have some garb from bartering with others. I've been sewing since teenage years, but never took it seriously until diving into the Faire world.  Now I do outfits for myself and for others along with my continuous leather shoe work, which is challenging and rewarding at the same time.  My outfits run from semi accurate to total fantasy.  Hey it's all in the name of comfort and fun for me.

Garbing Experience:
I have been sewing since the early 70s.  I have been researching and making historic costume since 2002 for myself (please to note the ME FIRST!) and members of my family.  Any historical costuming from 1300 to 1945 interests me, but, right now, I am primarily focusing on the time periods 1300-1350, all of the 16th century, and 1730-1780.

I suppose you could say I am a fanatic about corset and bodice fit.  I am the developer and hostess of The Bodice Workshop where I teach other ladies my method for fitting and making a corset or bodice that is reasonably historically accurate for the later half of the 16th century.  (Sir Doune has been trying very hard to convince his mother to turn the fitting techniques of The Bodice Workshop into a DVD.)

Turn-ons:  Historical Accuracy.  I have a particular weakness for period portrait interpretations - the more the interpretation looks like the portrait, the better I like it.

I have a webpage where I detail my costuming adventures:
Karen's Sewing Korner:  The Costuming Obsession (http://www.karen.htmlcreators.com/)
I find it ever so helpful to remind me what I did the last time!

Have intention to eventually have a booth at fair selling children's costumes and other handmade items. Sew all of my family's costumes not H/A but we all love them anyway. Gradually striving for more accuracy but financial constraints limit the amount I can spend. Have just been accepted into nursing school so my next 2 years will be focused on that. Participation at Faires: Interpretor for the Deaf as a Stage Interpretor for the larger Faires, with So Cal Faire mostly. I am a playtron now. I am also an SCA persona I have been invovled with the SCA for 24 years.

Garbing Experience: I began sewing when I got married and wanted awesome garb but had to live on a budget. I began with my first book and some basic cotton, next I was given help from some awesome people and just have been wrangling fabric ever since.

Upcoming Project:  A gown from a portrait of May Queen of Scots. I am currently working on a 'Summer Tourney Gown' for the SCA.

Current Project: Pirate garb.  I just finished my daughter's pirate garb and I need to complete mine and 2 other wee pirates before the fall. However, my "to do" list is quite large, including an Elizabethan gown, a medieval gown, some fantastical fairies for next year, and a Scottish ensemble. (the list goes on and on.)

Participation at Faire:  Currently I am a playtron at the Washington Renaissance Fantasy Faire.  I have also been a vendor (gamer? I worked the balloon fencing booth) at MiRF, a playtron at the Marshall Mayfaire, and a show performer at the Saline Celtic Festival, the Howell Balloon Festival, the Bay City Tall Ships Festival, and a Celtic Festival I've forgotten the name of in Mo.
Garbing Experience:  Made a skirt with my Mom's help when I was a little kid.  Didn't touch sewing again until college, when I helped my Mom make my first set of garb.  The following summer, I made a shirt-the first think I had sewn by myself-without using a pattern.  Since then, I have only made one piece of clothing where I have not modified the pattern, or made my own pattern.  Most of what I have sewn has been garb (much more fantasy or "ren faire correct" as opposed to h/a) or halloween costumes, though I've been thinking about branching out into everyday wear clothes.  I also have a bad habit of not starting projects soon enough, which leads to unfinished hems and the like, but I'm starting to get better about that. :)

And one of these days, when I have successfully put fresh batteries in my camera, I may actually have pictures of me in garb.  The closest I have is the picture from my main intro, which is a sci-fi suit of armor I made (not reposting that here, cuz it's not on topic).

Garbing Experience:  My mother was a good seamstress but I never touched a sewing machine until three years ago. Started with simple faire skirts and chemises, went to Pennsic and then I got the bug bad. I've made early Florentine gowns and am working on a venetian (see photo sans sleeves and hem). I've got a loooong "to sew" list which includes a woodland fae outfit, a later Florentine gown and a complete pirate outfit. I've also made my own beaver fur pouch and learned that metallic electrical tape gets guard hairs off a pelt in a snap!

Participation at faire: Am part of "Have Court, Will Travel", the Royal Court at the Des Moines Renaissance Faire since 2006 (when it moved to a permanent location). We are also the court for the new Dubuque Faire (may 31, June 1 this year!!! Don't forget!!!!), and have worked both the Nebraska and Iowa Renaissance Faires with our Boy Scout troop crossbow booth since spring of '05 (missed NebFaire this month, due to scheduling weirdness). LOOOOOOVVVEEEEE FAIRE!!!!!!
Garbing Experience: Been sewing garb since Feb. of 2005. My first project was a bumroll, and then a farthingale. The dress that went with it has since been destroyed to protect the innocent (see above). My garb closet is stuffed, and I have an aversion to NOT making at least one new piece of garb for every fest I work at or attend (made a dress in a week for the Iowa Ren Faire earlier this month). I've got peasant, middle class, LOTR, pirate, and noble for both my son and myself (well, LOTR for my son), and have made garb for pretty much our whole boy scout troop. My current projects for myself include a new linen farthingale, a silver tafetta underskirt (just needs hemming), and various enhancements to my black noble gown, all of which need to be finished before Dubuque RF at the end of the month. Oh, and two christening gowns which need to be FINISHED and wrapped before this Saturday (no pressure there, or anything). A multitude of other projects are in the works, but unfortunately, a new noble gown for myself is not on the list...

Time to get back to sewing!!!!!!!

Participation at Faire:  Whatever historical events happening in Eastern/Southern Norway.
Favourite period(s): Florentine ca. 1500-1550, Venetian ca. 1530-1590, early German
Garbing experience:  I've never learned to sew other than the stuff I learned at school. The actual sewing process isn't my forte, it's sloppy and with the symmetry of the eye rather than proper measures (I have dyscalculia, if anyone knows what that is). But I'm good at constructing stuff and on combining materials and trims. Razzle-dazzle them... ;)

I mostly make stuff for myself. I started with the vision of prooving that the making of costumes didn't have to be all that expensive. Then I got hooked on trying to copy portraits. Now I'm trying to get stuff as period as possible, and my vision of cheap costumes is long forgotten...  :D

I have no pics of me in garb (this will change soon).  But here I am in a dress I recently made from a vintage 1953 pattern.

Last name is a combination of mine and m'lord's last names. ;)  Actual First name is Roberta, My faire first name is still TBD.

Joined RF:  August of 2007, thanks to the Wonderful Baron for approaching us at the Mead Booth!
Board "title" :  None.
Participation At Faire:  First year at MNRF last year as a playtron. It was awesome!

Garbing experience: My sister has her Bachelor's of Science in Human Ecology, Clothing and Textiles, so I've learned everything from her. Normally I get her to make stuff, but as she works for Silver Jeans, AND 35 hours a week part time for a suit store (Moore's), AND sews grad/wedding clothign on the side, I've decided to test out what she's taught me making garb. "Lord Garadeaux" makes his own, which means we right for sewing machine time. (We had two, but they died a week before faire last year, and had to run out and buy a new one...AND sew buttons on in the car during the 10 hour drive to Shakopee!). Generally we aim for faire-friendly, not HA clothing, because its expensive, and I'd rather have fun and love what I'm wearing than match things exactly. (My personal view (and I realize its not everyone), is that if we come up with enough "new" types of renaissance clothing, it can overtake the horrid 70'ish and hip hop clothing that is currently in style!)
Current creation will be a grey/black/white woven jacquard with black velvet noble's gown, with pearl trimmings! Ack, only 2.5 weeks til i attend faire, I must get bak to sewing now!

Photos of the two of us:

Sewing experience: I have a little bit of sewing under my belt, but probably just enough to get me into trouble. :P Did some with upholstery and a little with making cloth dolls, but that's about it.
Garbing experience: Been to faire a few times at the Texas Ren Faire and the Four Winds Festival but just as a paytron. I'm finally working on putting some garb together to go with my user name and it will be my first time as a playtron. A few pieces of jewelry, a sealskin (the pattern's in progress), maybe a few actual pieces of garbs (drawstring skirt, a chemise and bodice maybe). If I get further into garb making, it will probably have a fantasy slant to it.

Garbing Expereience:   I've been sewing since the age of 12, as I've always been too tall to find things that fit off the rack. My first "garb" was made in 1997 for MNRF, and I was so overwhelmed that I didn't make anything again until 2007! I suppose that's what I get for trying to make stuff from commercial patterns and having to lengthen EVERYTHING. Since that first costume (which is what it was), I've learned how to draft patterns, and have made garb for me, my best friend, and my children. Now if only I could get my spouse to agree - he looks JUST like Henry VIII!!!

We started doing faire over 17 years ago at Black Point and have continued ever since.

Garbing Experience:   I make mine and my daughters gowns and a few other ladies gowns as well. I make most of my husband's garb. I try to make as much as I can however I do buy things when I have no time. I make all my feather fans and most of our jewelry. It's just cheaper for me. Garbing a family can get expensive so I have learned that if we want to do this we need to figure out how to make it.

Board "Title" None - what do I have to do to get one!
Participation at Faire: Hubby and I have attended AZRF with our 3 daughters for the last 7 or 8 years.
Garbing Experience: None before spring of 2008. Since then, I've sewn 5 or 6 complete outfits, and several separate individual items (bodices, skirts, etc.)
Picture: Sorry - no current photo yet

Hi, everyone! Can't tell you how glad I am to find a spot where there are others who share my newfound passion for sewing garb. Although I used to sew all my own clothes in high school about a hundred years ago, I quit sewing in my early twenties, and have only just picked it up again. I have to say, you all put me to shame - so many pretty things and lovely projects. Everything garb I've sewn in the past year has been for my family - three teen daughters and my husband. One day, I'll start a project for myself. I'm very much an amateur, but I'm improving slowly. There's a fabric shop here in Pheonix called SAS - it's a buy-by-the-pound sort of place, where the fabric is sometimes great, sometimes of dubious quality, but inexpensive enough that you can experiment and practice with different stuff and not feel too badly if a project fails. Until my craftsmanship improves and I feel secure enough to buy good quality stuff, this is the type of place for me! I'm really embarassed to say that after attending every AZ fair at least four times per season for so many years, we never even knew what playtrons were, or that many of the gorgeous outfits we were seeing were being worn by faire-goers and not employees. Duh. We lead sheltered lives. So now I'm off and running on our own stuff, and when we attend opening day at AZRF this Saturday, my family will be decked out in garb that hopefully has improved somewhat from the things I made last year. It's been fun and educational, and I'm happy there is a place to go on this board where I can ask my dumb questions and improve my fledgling skills. Thanks to everyone for sharing pictures of their projects!

I suppose I should post here, since I've been posting in other threads in this section and haven't properly introduced myself yet..

NAME:  Will / tcindie (no fest name.. yet)
Joined RF:  April 23, 2009 - Newb here, but been around the 'net since before the web existed
Board "title" :  n/a
Participation At Faire:  MNRF Fencing booth (since '08), also volunteered a couple times many years ago at the old dunk tank at MNRF with a youth group
Garbing Expereience:  Primarily my own garb, though I've also done some things for friends.  Also interested in garbing for hire.. ;)

I was one of those lucky kids who had a stay at home mom growing up, and she being an avid quilter, naturally taught me how to sew.. so, I've been sewing on and off basically my whole life, though there isn't a great deal of need for me to sew in ordinary day to day life, so having fest as a motivation is good.  I also have done a few pieces for some short films I've been involved in, and will likely do much more of that in the not too distant future.

Hi! Gillian McGill here!

name: Lady Gillian McGill de Verona
joined R/F: before the crash, but have been absent for a year while at College
board "title": none
participation at Faire: Playtron at Sterling Renaissance Festival, Sterling NY
garbing experience: 1975-1981, made my own and others' uniforms British Royal Artillery and Colonial Armies; 1982-1996, did special orders uniforms for Rev War/ Civil War / Indian War re-enactors, as well as Native American garb for the powwow circuit.
I took 4 years off and moved back in time when I joined the Society for Creative Anachronism, and have settled into making garb ranging from 13th C. Burgundian to 16th C. Tudor, Venetian, and Florentine. I sew for myself and for others.
Playtron / SCA Persona: A Scotswoman wed to a Veronese merchant prince, widowed early and now in charge of a factoring house and small fleet of trading vessels. Before his untimely death, husband kept me occupied by paying for my art studies with several different Master Artists...which has me flitting about Sterling, drawing and painting the scenery and the various happenings of Her Majesty's summer progress.

I have no current photos but will be modeling the entire wardrobe for the camera before the summer is out  :)
Just because I have been doing fine sewing since my grandmother taught me to repair lace when I was 7, does not mean I can't learn a few new tricks. Hope to be here frequently now that I'm on summer break from classes!

Board "title":   Mangler of Fabric

Participation At Faire:  Began going to faires as a Playtron in 1975, then began to work faire as a costume seller (Dye Spot and Heart's Delight), and as an Interpretor for the Deaf within the Guild of St. Judes, worked Faires in California: Nothern and Southern Renaissance Pleasure Faires, SLO, Fresno, San Diego, all over. Ojai I was a featured Psychic.  Also part of the SCA since 1985, I have been part of 3 Kingdoms: An Tir, Caid, Kingdom of the West.

Garbing Experience: I have been sewing only since 1993, when my family moved to An Tir (no Faires  :-[ ) and I wanted more Historical and less faire wench garb.  So I bought a used Bernina, and tons of cotton, I have not stopped since.

My Era: I live primarily within 1560's to 1580's England, and France with jaunts to the Italian City States from 1450's to the 1580's. I enjoy searching for jewlery or making it myself, working on perfecting skills

I have for the first time, found a love not of the Renaissance, first with Regency fashions and then I found Steampunk and I will be making some cool things, I got my hubby into it as well when I found a hat that fits him! Score!

Garbing Expereience:   Started about 6 years ago. Spent a year or two making fairy wings for fairy garb, moved on to gypsy garb, pirate, LotR-inspired gowns, and my somewhat H/A (as much as a college student's budget would allow) Henrician court gown. Next on the agenda is one of the costumes from the red riding hood movie that my sister requested, as well as Victorian Bustles that have been two years in the planning stage. I've dabbled in jewelry/chainmail and eventually I want to start making hats and shoes.

Hopefully this comes out small enough... But here's the court gown:

Hmm, I never posted in this thread... I guess I've never formally introduced myself?  :-\
Name: Lady Rebecca
Joined RF: Spring 2009, I believe
Board title: None, to my knowledge
Participation at Fair: Playtron. I've been to Norman Medieval Faire, OKRF, Scarby, a small faire in Watsonville, GSLRF, Sterling, BARF, Lady Lake, Sarasota, and will be attending the socal Pleasure Faire for the first time in a couple weeks
Garbing Experience: I started sewing sometime around 2005, making some random Halloween and theatre costumes. Then when I went to college, I got a minor in costume design, worked in the costume shop, and did wardrobe for all the shows, as well as making more costumes. My jr year of college is when I first discovered faire, and I made garb for myself, and two other people before I even attended my first one. I have also worked in wardrobe at other pro theatres and theme parks. My costuming has really taken off in the last year (with the purchase of my Viking machine), and I have since made pirate garb, several community theatre costumes, my navy velvet Ren garb (and all its accessories, shown in my avatar), an 1860s outfit for myself and my mom, a frock coat for dad, a Medieval/fantasy outfit, a Chemise a la Reine, a 17th c gown, and a bunch of 18th c accessories, including my current project, a hand-quilted petticoat. In the last month, I have also officially started my own business, Lady Rebecca Fashions. Participation At Faire:
Whichever one we can get to on a given weekend. I may get involved with the Mobile Faire, I haven't decided yet.

Garbing Experience:
I started embroidering when I was 5 years old, with a BIG iron on transfer on a piece of white fabric sitting next to my maiden Aunt who could make anything, She had the patients of a saint, but I did learn at her side for almost 4 years.   Then fashioned my own Barbie cloths out of the scrap box she and my mother always had around.  Started making my own clothes in Jr. High School and have been sewing something ever since.  I can do all kinds of needlework, Crewel, knitting, crochet, sewing, and I've made one quilt. I hand smocked a baby dress for my Niece when she was born, that was an interesting task.  I've even done some tailoring making suites for myself.  But this Period Garb thing has me stumped.  So I'm going to be asking a lot of questions.  I guess because most of the garb is fitted different than our modern clothing and if it's not fitted correctly then it doesn't hang right and that I can't abide.

I pray I don't wear out my welcome.

Guess I can jump on this 'who-am-I' thing a few years late... my bad.

Name: CecilsTanequin aka CT. I also go by Radclyffe, or in real life just Kat.

Joined RF: Originally February of 2006 on the ooooollllldddd boards. However I'm usually active for a month then gone for 6. Then back again like it's all new and exciting! Then I disappear again. It's a crazy life sometimes.

Board "title": Don't know that I have one. I seem to remember years ago something about being Royal Procrastinator but that was also before the old boards crashed.

Participation at Faire: Cast member at Bristol since 2007 (Guilde of St. George aka Court). Cousin cast member at the Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire (southern california)... meaning Bristol and Southern are cousin faires and Southern will adopt me for a weekend when I come out. And visitor to as many faires as I can make it to.

Garbing Experience: Made my first faire-gown when I was 15, self-teaching my way through. Studied costume design and construction at UW-Madison working on shows and graduating with my BA. Worked as a stitcher and wardrobe sup for some regional theatres including American Players Theatre and the Milwaukee Rep. I'm now a Flight Attendant and I've been making court wear for fellow cast members for several years now. My blog catalogues most of my work: http://theradclyffe.blogspot.com (http://theradclyffe.blogspot.com)

This is the best full length view of me in my gown.

Garbing Experience:  Been sewing since my early teens; once in college I made a dress (without a pattern and in less than 24 hours) for a friend who was in SCA. Bits and pieces (shirt, breeches) for my husband and hats for both of us.  I'm getting ready to make a chemise and skirts for myself, and possibly a new bodice.
