My husband and I are searching for headwear that falls along a Swiss origin (mid to late 1500's)... would anyone know where we can find information on what it would look like (for both male and female, merchant class)? Would it be similar or the same as German styles? Also, does anyone know where I could buy said headwear? lol Thanks in advance! I love you guys - y'all have already helped me oodles. :) :) Maybe I can meet some of you in person someday and buy you drinks/give you favors/something to show appreciation. :) :) - Amber

Sorry, couldn't resist. ;D

hahaha :) :) I wish I could buy one. My husband is from Wisconsin and is a very proud 'cheese head'... that would be an interesting way to present Swedish headwear to him. hahaha :) :)
I found that by doing a Google Images search for Swiss Hat. I didn't find anything too distinctive, other than the above. :D German style should be close. I'd stay away fron flat caps and muffin hats, and stick with one of the tall hats with a small brim. If you're going to TRF there are a couple of vendors there that should have something very close.

Here is a copy of a Swiss Guard, showing that a Flat Cap may NOT be too far off.

I found these by searching for Swiss Costume. Be sure that you don't have "safe search" turned off if you're at work. :o

edited for speling spelling ::)
haha You bet I don't have safe search! :P It could get me in a whole mess of trouble someday if I decided to goof off. haha :) Thanks for the advice. I think we will see how it (his garb ensemble) fits with a German hat or tall hat (w/ small brim, of course). I haven't found anything yet that distinguishes Swiss headwear from German in those days. :) Thx again for the assistance!
You could also look up flemish head wear. Different area, but a lot of the "folk" headdress are in those paintings. At least different ideas

Hello
I have this site and it is about the Swiss Military, which was very prevalent in the 16th Century

So from what I can understand the Swiss or Schwyz were heavily influenced by those around them including other mercenary type people those we call German today but would have been Germanic and Flemish as well the Italian City States.
So Hats that would or could have been worn in Swizerland
