Title: Dress / Garb Diary Links
Post by: Artemisia on May 14, 2008, 05:36:35 PM
I think this thread should come back. Beat you to it Gem!

I'm in awe of all the talent on these boards. I believe we should have easy access to all those delicious dress diaries and sewing blogs.

{moderator}Thank you.... yes, there are some guidelines that need to be followed.
1.   THis is for posting of existing Dress/Garb Diary links.  Please do not post your project as you creat it.
2.  Please keep comments and questions to a minimum or RenMail the poster.
3.  YOUR OWN Work.  No Items you have sold, or items you have purchased.
4.  Please try to use the format that is shown below as well.  Makes it easier to read.{/moderator}

I'll go first:
Dress Diary of a Novice Renaissance Seamstress
http://dressdiary.blogspot.com
16c. italian gowns and fantasy faire clothing
Right now it's mostly italian, mostly.

{moderator} Changed name to be inclusive of the boys, elves, etc... {/moderator}

My sewing projects are on my blog at www.who-gives-a.blogspot.com (http://www.who-gives-a.blogspot.com)
Sewing posts are mixed in with scrapbooking, stamping, and photography but you can click "garb projects" in the right hand column to see only those posts.

I just started a dress diary at http://sarasdressdiaries.blog.com/ (http://sarasdressdiaries.blog.com/).  It's just got the beginning of my Arthurian costume in it, but I'll be updating again soon, probably later tonight or tomorrow.  When I feel like sewing again.

I think you have to refresh the page to see new posts.

Inspired by gypsylakat, I created the start of a diary: http://mieljolie.blogspot.com (http://mieljolie.blogspot.com).

I've added a few of my most recently completed projects.  I will hopefully eventually add some current projects in the works.  I promise more of them will be related to actual sewing.  :)  I think my hand-me-down Singer from the late 60's is finally wearing out on me.  It out-lived several newer machines, but it's now making terrible noises and skipping stitches.  They just don't make them like they used to.  Hehehe

I just love thumbing thru all the great works in here!  <Kneeling and bowing, "I'm not worthy...I'm not worthy...">

I definitely enjoyed it! But charcoal background with purple text made the letters almost disappear on my screen - they were both so dark I had to mark all text to be able to read it. I don't know if others have this problem?

I love the research photos of the French style (Mary, Queen of Scots dress)!

I would be honored to add your links to my blog so I can give readers other, and more experienced insight into garbing than my own.  I figured I would ask you ladies instead of just posting them.

So if you would like me to put your link up on my "Renaissance Dress Diaries"

Question: What's the best way to start a dress diary website wise? I get the idea but I've never created a website before. Are there ways to do it for free? etc. Any help would be really appreciated, I'd love to start documenting my dresses.

A blog is probably the easiest way to go.

Get one of the blogs where you can tag each projects. Say you've made a Tudor dress and a Herjolfsnes garb. If you want to direct people only to the Tudor dress, you choose that tag, and the entries coming up will only be about the Tudor one. An example from my own blog:

GENERAL LINK: http://operafantomet.livejournal.com/
WITH A SPECIFIC TAG: http://operafantomet.livejournal.com/tag/peacock

I think most blogs have this option nowadays. I use Livejournal, but Blogspot.com and Blogger.com are also good options. And probably a ton more... All these are free. In some you need an extern photo server, like Flickr, Photobucket or Facebook, while others have a photo server included.

You can also get a free website, like http://www.webs.com , but there you need to know some basic HTML.

Blogging about costumes is a lot of fun. Once you've built a decent friend list, you get interesting feedback and you can also see what other costume makers are up to. You can also keep track on when you made what. Give it a try!

It's more for Rococo on up but every so often I stumble upon something 16th Century to put in the blog. It's a continuation of my old Tumblr blog.  Tumblr does NOT listen to it's consumers so I gave up on them.  However, everything is still over there -just all jumbled up because tumblr isn't that bright.

Quite lovely from what I can see in the photo of your kirtle, Songbird!   My biggest suggestion would be to get linen for your dress next time - it's not as expensive as it used to be and it was made for the South in the summer time!   Seriously, I love my Italian Renaissance outfits out of linen in 90F or hotter weather.  I tend to be the only one that doesn't look like a melting candle.  :-)    Linen blends are okay - especially linen cotton ones which work AMAZINGLY for chemises.  You can get the hankyweight linen/cotton blend at Joanns - just be careful that it's only linen and cotton.  For a good online linen source, I suggest Fabric-store (http://www.fabrics-store.com/?gclid=Cj0KEQjwmKG5BRDv4YaE5t6oqf0BEiQAwqDNfAyiMTbh8FXI4hsEu6d_y9Fte5fFiQ9CaW8BzfO8rfkaAkfv8P8HAQ) which often has their linen on sale for around $7.60 to $8.60 a yard.   Not exactly a whole bunch more than the poly/rayon linen look you bought for your dress.  Go with lightweight or medium weight linen - the heavy weight is better for stays.  If you have an IKEA near you, you can get gray linen for $7 a yard, I think, that is heavy and perfect for stays.  I made an 18th c pair of stays for my Sister in Law out of the IKEA linen.

Only only other suggestions would be to make your sleeves baggy and add a cuff - the "puffy" sleeves are great in the summer as the fabric doesn't stick to you as much.

Thanks Isabella! You read my mind - I've just finished an italian-style chemise out of linen, and am planning on a English one with better cuffed sleeves! :) I've heard a lot of good things about the Fabric-Store.com linen, and can't wait to save up enough crafting money and free time to start on kirtle 2.0!
