Title: Castleton 2012
Post by: Archer on January 18, 2012, 03:26:57 PM
May is not a long way off.   Looking forward to the upcoming work shops the owners of Castlton are offering for FOF charter members this year.    They have some nice packages that include three levels with various degrees of perks.

If you plan to visit for a first time, you'll find this faire worth the time.  I am told that Circa Paleo will be there again on the final weekend.

I won't call this a "countdown" thread but . . . maybe just an anticipation thread with an offer of unofficial answers and such to newcomers for any first time visitors that have questions about the area or camping or just the faire in general from a playtron's perspective.   This will be my 6th or 7th ( I lost count) year of attending this faire as a playtron.   It seems to offer something or several somethings new,  every year.

Looking forward to a visit from Merlin and Nim this season.

If you are attending, look us up and say hello.

We can point you in the direction of free water if ye budget be tight this year.   ;D

Kind of you to mention us, Archer! We're looking forward to another visit to Castleton as well! We very much enjoyed it last year. This is already turning out to be a packed Spring schedule for us!

Merlin, you'll have to let us know which weekend you and Nim will be attending, so we can be sure to be there!  I'm not sure how many weekends we'll be able to make it out, but if you two will be there, then of course so will we!!!

I started a thread, Visitors from the North, because 4 of us are hoping to come over Memorial Day.  Any answers to my abundant questions would be much appreciated!  We've never been, but this faire has been highly recommended to us, and we look forward to our visit.

Archer would be the person to answer your questions. I have attended but once as yet. Being Oklahoma, and Memorial Day, I would make sure you have cooler garb available, because it could very easily be really hot. Historical average is 81, but the last couple of years have been abnormally warm in the region.

Lady Renee, I agree with Merlin as to the probable temperatures, although it could be a touch chilly in the early hours.  Since parking is quite reasonably close, however, strolling back out to your vehicle to return your cloak is easily done.  I also agree that Archer would be the one to ask about local amenities, as well, since I've only been to this Faire once, also (even though we've lived here in the state again for almost 11 years, this time).

It's a lovely Faire, though, and should be easily toured in a weekend, particularly if you will have three days and enjoy lingering in the shops.  There are some wonderful vendors, and they are not all  the same things you see from Faire to Faire, so you might want to do a bit of shopping!  Some excellent crafters sell their wares there, and the food can be quite good, as well.  There are spirits available, also, and the gatekeepers are not terribly concerned about what you bring in with you in your tankard, either!  No one even asked as we all walked in with full mugs and flasks last year, so the atmosphere is nicely relaxed and very conducive to tailgating!  There is some wonderful entertainment, as well, and the layout of the Faire makes it fairly easy to get from one stage to the next in time for the various offerings.  There are also many places to find a bit of shade to sit in and relax, and the Castle even offers a bit of cooled air if you get overheated... as well as air conditioned flushies!  In fact, I believe all of the privies I encountered on the grounds were flushies, although only the ones in the castle have AC.

(Edit:  There ARE porta-privies outside the gates, in teh parking lot, but I believe those were the only ones I saw that were not flushies.)

Tickets are available online, and can be found here (http://www.okcastle.com/tickets.htm), as well as tickets to special events such as the Queen's Tea, Pirate's Feast, King's Lunch, etc...  There is also a two day pass that is quite reasonable, and the daily ticket prices are very low, as well.  I believe we will be buying the season passes this year, in the hopes we will be able to attend more than one weekend.

I don't know anything about the camping in the area, other than that there is supposed to be some within half an hour or so, but when Scally and I went last year we stayed in the van in the parking lot, and no one said a thing to us.  There were also a few other vehicles which were quite obviously occupied, as well, and at least one RV that was plugged into an electrical outlet on a light pole right there in the lot, so I can't imagine they even care as long as you're not setting up tents!  I believe we passed a few motels on the way in, as well, although I couldn't tell you anything about them.  Most looked fairly standard to the national norm, however, and a couple even looked rather new-ish, if I recall correctly.

That's about the extent of my knowledge... but I really do think that Archer can most likely give you more in depth information.  Hope at least a little of this helps!  :)

Archer, can you give us a rundown on approximately how many miles these places are from the Faire grounds?
Title: Re: Castleton 2012
Post by: Archer on January 20, 2012, 08:54:59 PM
Roughly.  Maybe sixteen miles or so, give or take and depending on which ones you want to know about but, easy travel.  Not  much more than driving across a large city except, very few stop lights and mostly four lane coming from the north of Muskogee.

The State Park location Greenleaf and Sequoyah Bay are probably closer by a few miles.   Sequayah Bay State park is a little to the northeast  of Muskogee and where it seems that most from that city go during summer to the lake as closest perhaps to the city proper.    Greenleaf is to the southeast of Muskogee, pretty drive but,  maybe not as easy to locate without knowing the area or having a GPS but its not too far from the military camp Gruber in Muskogee County.

I don't know if the camping info is directed towards our group, or if it's just general information, but if I made it seem like we would be camping, we won't.  We will  stay in a hotel.

Spoke to a friend of ours, she and her husband stayed at the Motel 8.  They liked it & said it was clean and safe, so we are looking at that, or maybe others that are comparable.  Haven't made any reservations yet.

It's great having all of the input, always better when insiders can tell you what to see and just as important, what to skip.

Thanks, all.  Keep it coming!!!    ;D

Yes, just general shelter information for those on a budget.  I tend to do cabins more than motel rooms for many reasons.  When on a "get away" a ground floor location happens with a cabin choice.  Less chance for car break-in,  far from home.  Theft of tags off cars seems to be on the rise, not just in this location either.   I like a fireplace when on vacation and cabins sometimes offer that option where a motel room does not.  When traveling with a group, you can get noisey at a cabin if you want.  If others get noisey and you want quiet, you get that also, with a cabin.  When traveling with friends the sharing of the cabin rental can be a savings to the group travel budget and many have a common living room area which is nice for gatherings with less space for such things in comparison to a motel lobby option.  Just a personal preference thing when on an adventure to new places. Coffee in the morning on a porch with a view of the lake appeals to me more than walking out to a parking lot of a motel to see if my transportation is in the same shape as it was left the night before.  Unfortunately, motel parking lots are often targeted ( here and everywhere ) by petty auto theives because victims are mostly from other places and they often won't or can't return for a trial if perpetrators are apprehended.  The dark side thinks the risk is less so motel parking areas are a popular target.  My work history causes me to know how the dark side thinks and acts and obviously that tends to play in to personal decision making.   Very pleased to know that you found something that fit your budget.   ;)

Yes.  They are spoken for, when they arrive with my level III FOF.  If I hear of a discount or a two for one or something along that line, it will be posted here in short order.   A few employees or performers of Castleton (Castle of Muskogee)  visit this forum,  from time to time.  Maybe the owner too, for all I know.   I did see a laundry lass posting from last year so, maybe they'll post info on discount opportunites . . .  if or when they check in here this season.

               (http://www.byronbear.org/images/Jeff.jpg)               (http://d6673sr63mbv7.cloudfront.net/archive/x340277053/g25800000000000000035e1bf8e56277dd7f6fe833009bf635ea1b8c025.jpg)

Say hello to Jeff if you visit this season.

Rani - The adults with daughters do come out of the Queen's Tea (usually inside the castle) with smiles.  Lunch with the King (in the second level wine tasting area overlooking the jousting field) is a good time also.  Just about every food from the faire is brought to you there in one place with the wine tasting right there and handy.   In the past, jugglers and musical performers rotate through as you dine on a variety of what the faire has to offer.  The idea of it, with a large variety of the faire's food (examples like cheese, grapes, bread bowl with potato soup and such) being brought to you in one place with a view of the dance area on one side and jousting field on the other has some appeal for those who like being outside and near the action.   If its hot and you have hot garb . . . one might prefer inside the Castle with the Queen's Tea, air conditioning and similar entertainments geared for children (and female children seem to prefer it . . . would be only my own viewer's observational opinion.   If it should for some odd reason rain, both places are dry.

The smoker is open air location behind the pirates area in a fort looking enclosure far out of the mainstream areas and little ears.   If it rains, last experience was they moved that to the second level wine tasting area with a roof and tables.   Last time it rained, it actually got a bit more wide open with the fun inside the castle with  hardcore visitors and regulars as many of the danes moved toward their cars and home.    The staff pay alot of attention to the little ones and they seem to glow with the level of interaction that the staff promotes and creates.

The FOF perks demonstrate that the owner views his regular playtrons as an asset.  Bravo Jeff.   ;D

These pictures are so great!  They make me tap my foot impatiently waiting for Memorial Day weekend and a visit!

Not only about discount tickets (which we will certainly keep our eyes open for), but does your FoF allow people to join for just the weekend they are visiting?  For example, at our home faire and several others we have been to, you can pay $5 or $10 for the weekend and have access to the FoF private area with the water and the privy as a visiting member.

Thanks to everyone for all the input.  I went on the faire website, and read about the entertainment, the merchants, the costume contest, and saw the map, and it looks so beautiful, I can't wait for winter to be over!

Archer, the King's Luncheon sounds really wonderful, but the price of the Queen's Tea is much more in line with our budget, since we want to try and visit more than once this season.  Mostly we will be bringing simple peasant meals with us (fruit, cheese, bread and meats), and tailgating in the parking lot for meals, even though I know there are lots of tasty choices available inside the gates.  This will allow us to have one treat per weekend, such as the Queen's tea, without breaking the bank, and still enjoy all of the wonderful entertainment.

We are definitely going to be getting the season passes, though, because it's such a wonderful savings over even the advance ticket prices that it will be worth the price even for Scally's pass.  I' d like to try and save up enough for one of the evening events, as well... such as the Masked Ball.  I think we would both enjoy that!  We'll just have to see how things work out, though.

If you too are a veteran, join in with me and my fellow veterans for the very respectful and fitting Memorial Day parade/ceremony the last weekend of faire.

Everyone seems to have their own preference on the evening events.   I've attended them all, more than once.   I suppose the King's Feaste was my personal favorite of the evening events.   I say "was" because I understand they are changing the theme to Pirate's Feaste and the label doesn't really matter.   The pirates and Scotts are massive in number so honor them, we should.   The Masked Ball is fun for those who like to dance and see great garb.   Without naming them all, they are all a great way to fill out the day at faire.

For those who may be staying longer or arrive early, the U.S.S. Batfish WWII submarine is a neat tour for big and small kids with a  location not too far ( a few miles ) from the Castle and the entry to crawl all over this boat is a few bucks.  The small entry fee goes to upkeep and maintenance.  It has a great museum and other things to see there.   Amazing that so many men went such great distances inside such tight space and fragile weaponry.   A bit off topic but, it goes along with the idea of things to see in the area, should one be unable to afford the evening entertainments at the OKRF.

@LRB -  I do not know the answer to your question.  This FOF is a new Charter Membership thing,  just starting.   This is the 17th annual festival.  I get season passes so, I do not know about other ticket info offers.  They may have weekend deals and/or I think they did a special for the three day weekend at the end but, uncertain.   The Castle link provides contact info to ask directly on that ticket information.   What you see on their webpage about the FOF is all the info that is out there to learn on it,  as far as known.  If staff or performers check in to this forum/thread this season, maybe they can answer these ticket and weekend special questions.  ???

A comment by the Bedlam Bards:

The Castle is the farthest both of the bards travel for a gig, and it's always worth it.  The good people in Muskogee always treat us like the stars we are--or at least, the stars we would like to be.  It's a tough trip to get there, but it's always hard to leave.   This faire is quickly becoming our favorite.  Pound for pound, you will not find a faire with more fun per square foot.  If you can visit that faire without a Castletonian interacting with you, you are invisible.  It's as close to the DFW metroplex as TRF, and the weather is much cooler than Scarborough's, so we expect to see more and more of our Hawkwood friends there in the future.  And I challenge you to find another major faire where the owner is willing to dance a lilt with the cast!  While you are there, be sure to check out the Washing Wenches and kick up your heels at the Maypole Dance, run by our good friend Will Somers, the best jester in all the lands.

Hello, I am the newest employee at the Castle of Muskogee and the Asst. Webmaster for okcastle.com. For those of you asking about Friends of Festival for just one weekend, might I suggest a Level 1 or level 2 membership. You can find the information on those at http://www.okcastle.com/friendsoffestival.htm. (http://www.okcastle.com/friendsoffestival.htm.)
There are also several hotels in the area for those of you asking about lodging and there are also some camp grounds in the surrounding areas. The campground at the Castle is for the merchants and actors only! We look forwarding to seeing you guys at the festival starting April 28th!

I can help you with a group discount.  Get your numbers together and I will make sure you get the best offer of the season.

The money part is always wonderful but our goal is to help you and your friends create the best memories ever.

A public thanks to the castle staff.  Now all we need is numbers of guests and dates to finish lining this up.  My count is six so far (not including Rani and her daughter who is going with a season pass) but,  maybe not all on the same weekend ?  Accurate to this point ?   Merlin, will you and Nim be bringing along your friend that attended last year ?   If you want in on the group discount, soon may be a good time to speak up on dates and total numbers of guests to attend.

At the moment, no clue as to which weekend we would be attending. Not sure about Robert, Not of Loxley ... he just lost his job of 17 years! The Castle, being as close as it is, may end up being one of those spur-of-the-moment trips. I've got a lot going on right now and may not be thinking straight...  :P

We have 4 people coming for 3 days, so that's 12 tickets if they don't have to be used all the same day.  We are visiting on Memorial Day weekend.

How many are needed to get the group rate, and would the 3 days, 4 people each day qualify towards the number needed?  If there are others visiting the same weekend, maybe we could purchase tickets together if we need more to qualify for the group rate.

@ Lady of the Web:  For 3 days, the season FoF pass isn't a good value for us.  It is a great pass, with great benefits, for those visiting more than a weekend, or with a season's pass, but won't work for our group.  Thank you, though, for the suggestion.

P.S. Always room for more banners.

I have to proofread a lot of stuff, so pardon the intrusion... You left out a 't' ...

Otherwise, a very nice banner!

Brother Coch, for your banner collection on frequently appearing Castleton knights  . . .

(should ye wish to continue with banner creation or just to know Castleton's frequent sircoat fliers . . .)

Another bears a charge of the Greek Cross, red interior of the cross, bordered in gold.

The colors are vertical (partied ? )  black and red.

Your other persona ( and a few more of ye former bretheren)  (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GBYoEXa4bjQ/Tl1paJClERI/AAAAAAAANKI/Spk8TaGdBSM/s400/crusader.jpg)

Castleton also has one of theTeutonic Order that attends faire at Castleton frequently . . . (http://getasword.com/2384-large/teutonic-knight-s-cape.jpg)

The Teutonic knight happens to be an employee so he doesn't get to wear his Teutonic often.  I suspect he is a cameleon and becomes his assignment on specified days.
When he helped with the joust, he seemed to be his Teutonic armored persona more often.

It is told among the citizens of Castleton that the large man, front and center, is the maker of the Trebuche for Castleton, an educator of engineering . . . in the world of the danes.

After today's workshop at Castleton, I can vouch that this guy (http://i988.photobucket.com/albums/af8/wolfnyghteyes/102_5343.jpg) and his lady are pretty good dancers.   ;D

When do we get to see you do that while wearing a sword, Coch ?

Lol Archer,  Good is not the word I was thinking to describe my dancing. I was afraid of being accused of a being possessed and being burned at the stake.
I have been working on the new banner and adding the other three. Just have not been pleased with the placement of all the pieces yet.

Agree with Merlin on these two, Coch.

Thanks for finding the pics also.   Making music for belly dancers is a good thing, no ?  The dulcimer player on my left is usually at Castleton for faire.

ROFL  I didn't think anyone got any pics of me then, at all!  It's not a very flattering photo, though (but then, I'm not terribly photogenic, particularly after a day in the Oklahoma heat)...  :-\

The belly dancing Gypsies are all good friends of mine, though!  Raks Al Hassana are wonderful, and they're all so much fun to hang out with!  Scally and I were honored to be adopted by them during King's Champion, and we enjoy seeing them at Norman Medieval Festival AND Castleton!

Oh, and if you will notice the little Gypsy in the background, in the white tunic and gold skirt... that's my little Scally Wag!  ;D

I thought that was Scally!

I wouldn't be playing my Martin while wearing chain mail...a little rough on the back of the instrument...

Actually, that was not my Martin brother Merlin.  I was shed of most of the chainmaile due to the heat that afternoon.

These gypsy shared instrument, their Hookah and their Persian rugs and pillows.

I play a Guild or my Ovation and . . .  occasionally at faire, that small body Montana back packer 6 string  (the one you see being played by the gypsy on the left,  in the pic)  was what I happened to have with me that day.   My drum and penny whistle missed the bus that day.

A tour of Castleton with the FoF last weekend revealed a few of the new things to see this year.

A children's story telling area has been constructed just south of pirates harbor area at the north end of the woodlands.

Two new tavern areas, one is a cave that was formerly the dragon's cave/den and the other inside the hull of a new pirate ship and new stage in the harbor area.

There is a new shade roof over the chessboard (replaced from damage timed with Oklahoma's earthquakes to the south or wind or both).

The Royal Lunch with the King is moving locations to the top of Morgan's Lane structures, overlooking the jousting field.  Its former location was the clocktower.

The new Italian section is looking very good.

The belly dancer and gypsy area wagons have been moved up into the woods giving them a more shaded area.  Their former location was consumed by the new pirate ship and story telling area additions.

Other constructions were still in progress and a few other surprises remain to see for yourself.

Large fly swatter because in the past, I spent many nights in a hot dusty place known as Fort Hood, with Tehas bugs.

I remember the flying things.  Some of them have wings that sound like a B-52 as they pass an ear.

Tehas bug remains resemble Arkansas road kill in splatter size.   8)

I'll vow that it was not easy to leave the big party and great people from this forum that were attending Merlin and Nim's big day event last Saturday.

My foot blisters and I argued over leaving Scarborough vs. making it back for the dress rehearsal at Castleton.  Both days at both locations were great.   I try to figure out how to get Moyra's pictures from Saturday and Sunday loaded someplace where you  can link to see them.  Now the trick is how to get back into work mode after fully escaping for two days into the fun zone.

wrack 2 also rack (rk) n.
1. a. Wreckage, especially of a ship cast ashore.
    b. Chiefly British Violent destruction of a building or vehicle.

2. a. Dried seaweed.
    b. Marine vegetation, especially kelp.

v. wracked also racked, wrack·ing also rack·ing, wracks also racks
v.tr. To cause the ruin of; wreck.
v.intr. To be wrecked.
[Middle English wrak, from Middle Dutch.]

Hmm?   Maybe the power of positive thought without brain wracking ?      ;D

So, what do the cards say ?   Will it be rain or shine for opening cannon on opening day in just . . .  10 more days ?     ;D ;D ;D

True.  The castle will be rocking in two days and a wake up.  Be there or . . .  be mundane.

If ye need armed escourt through the shire Rabbi, we are men at arms for hire with a wee fee of a Killian's Red.   ;D

It be rumored that a Rabbi is heavy laden with coin of the realm.  We can assit ye with lightening that burden.   ;D

Thanks to all for the advance welcome.  I'm not sure how big this faire is, but I will be there with my 3 "boy toys," a phrase that was coined at the M'Crack gathering in Tennessee last year.  One day for sure will be Scottish - and it's hard to miss the bright colors of the Buchanan tartan.  The rest depends on the weather.  But there might also be pirates.  Arrrrrrgggggg...

I'm not coming until everyone hides their ugly mug!  ;)  Archer knows I'm kidding. I try not to piss off people with swords.

Seriously, Nim and I are still very much hoping to be able to squeeze in a trip to Castleton this season, even if it's a quick one.  Being with friends right now would be most helpful and supportive. We will lay my mum to rest on the morrow. Blissfully, a short time at the hands of cancer. I honestly am not sure if I should be feeling grief or relief that she didn't suffer horribly for a long period of time. Archer and Moyra have been a great help to me emotionally. They are very good friends.

I look forward to making your acquaintance, Coch.

What can I say, We ended up having two extra hours and had to have a Ren-fix.

To the Castleton Regulars,

Have a favor to ask please.  When you are at faire this weekend, could you please check to see if there is a 3 day pass for the Memorial Day weekend?  And if there is one, the price if you can buy it in advance and if there is a different price at the gate.

Also, what is the age for the Senior passes?  And if there is a 3 day pass, is there a Senior rate for that, too?

I appreciate your help. I didn't see 3 day passes or ages for seniors on the website, and a couple people in our group might qualify (not me!).  During the day, at work, we must keep our cell phones turned off, and by the time I get out, usually everything is closed.

Thanks for the help on anything you can find out.    ;D

If you secure tickets in advance you get a couple of dollars off each ticket under the gate price.    I've seen no three day pass information this year.  Maybe Coch knows something on that which is unknown to me.

@Merlin.   That's what she said when I suggested she see the Plague Doctor  . . . the evidence is circumstantial.

Sometimes, circumstantial evidence is the most persuasive.   Like waking up, look out your window after sleeping all night and see snow.

It is only circumstantial evidence that it snowed during the night, while you were sleeping.  It still can be very persuasive.   ;D

Yes... it's going to be really hot out there, but there are places on the grounds where it's shady and you can sit and enjoy shows, so if you happen on one of these nice shady spots with seating it might be a good idea to take advantage of it for a few moments, so you don't get too fatigued by the heat/humidity.  I know it never fails to take a toll on me!  Hope you have a wonderful visit!  :)

Heat mixed with humidity is the killer.  100 degrees with 20% humidity is a whole lot different than the same with 60% humidity, as you are undoubtedly aware, living in AR.
