Title: Fast Costuming Help - Colorado Specific
Post by: Tanda on May 27, 2010, 09:24:46 PM
I need to throw together a decent Scotsman in 2 weeks. The kilt is covered. We're doing a real honest to goodness Great Kilt. I learned to roll them for a reason! Picking up the fabric sometime next week. But, I'm having issues with the accessories. He's got two swords that we will probably run up the hill to Renaissance Leather to get sheathed when we get there. I need to know some names of places to find boots and a sporran. These are items I cannot make, and I no idea where to find them. I may be hitting Flossy McGrew's out of desperation for a shirt. Are there any other good places I can go in Denver or the Springs to find these items before opening day? I told him we could find the last few bits at faire, but he doesn't want to show up half dressed. If I can't find boots for him, what's a good option that won't look too bad?

I'm amazed he's agreed to wear the kilt, let alone foot the bill for it! Time is more of an issue...and my self-righteous indignation at places that overcharge for a bolt of cloth. $400 for a great kilt? Please! For that price, it should wrap itself.

Well for everything BUT the boots and including a type of sporran, belts, baldrics, fur, leather we have a WONDERFUL place in Loveland called Phoenix nest. Her work is top notch but don't expect to order something to be made now and have it by faire. Expect it in 6 months. She did my camera bag which Renaissance leather drooled over last year. She is on Cleveland just south of 4th St. Her shop specilizes in Medieval and Renaissance and she also has some clothing like shirts. Check her out.

BOOTS. I see MANY people wearing the Minnetonka calf high moccasins with the fringe chopped off. Find them, and you have boots.

Tanda, I don't have a clue about the other bits, but you can order a decent leather sporran for $25 online.  Should get here in plenty of time if your SO orders right away.  Here's your link:

Millers Indian Village in Estes Park used to carry the minnetonka moccasins. The were about 70 bucks when I got mine several years ago. It's a long drive but might be worth calling them if you can't find them elsewhere. http://www.city-data.com/businesses/816965297-miller-s-indian-village-estes-park-co.html.

Good luck.

With a great kilt, you'll want to finish up his garb right!  If he's willing to shell out the money for a great pair of boots that will last, you could browse Target and Walmart for boots in the meantime.  They won't last, but you might be able to find something that is perfect until he gets the boots he really wants.  Even simple leather/rope sandals would be passable (sounds odd, but that works for garb approval at one faire I know well).

As for a sporran possibilities ... I'd agree with the Baron that you have shipping time and endless options online ...
In Colorado Springs: Celtic Broker is a shop in the Chapel Hills Mall on North Academy (phone: 303.960.5155), they might have some.
In Manitou Springs: There's was a Scottish shop that sold sporrans and such near the main street, but I'm not sure if it's there anymore; I'll see if I can find out.  UPDATE: The Scottish shop is gone, but there's still an Irish shop.

I hope this helps!  And congrats ... great kilts are awesome, and no little amount of work (to roll and wear!).

Make him go barefoot, nothing more period for the scots than that. <grin>

If you want to shell out the cash and be period accurate, there are a couple of online companies that will be happy to help you.  If you want to cut corners and save some cash, one of my leather pouches can be used as a mock sporran.  No fur or tassles thought, just leather. I beleive Terry called it his Faux Sporran.

There is also a shop off of Belleview and I-25 called The Thistle and Shamrock. All of their items are imported directly from Scotland and Ireland, which does mean that they can be a bit on the pricey side, but well worth it.

Here is their website: http://www.irish-scottish-denver.com/ (http://www.irish-scottish-denver.com/)

Also, there is an Irish shop in Old Town Littleton off of Santa Fe and West Alamo Ave. They boast to be the only Celtic Goods store in Denver. You can be the judge of that. It is in a cute little yellow house on the North side of the street.

Their Website: http://www.kerreen.com/mysitecaddy/site3/index.htm (http://www.kerreen.com/mysitecaddy/site3/index.htm)

Those two would be my recommendations. My husband got all of his "Scottish Attire" from The Thistle and Shamrock, so I am more familiar with them.
If it makes you feel any better about the price, the kilt my hubby got is not a grand tartan, and it still cost him over $400.

Thank you all for your help.

We ordered the sporran and shirt from Sport Kilt. Plain shirt, calf skin sporran - very nice.

We're heading up to Estes to check out the boots.

He's decided to forgo the swords the first time 'round.
