Title: Show Us Your Hats!
Post by: Cloverpogue on July 13, 2008, 04:29:26 PM
I finally completed my pirate hat. *phew* I bought the blank and went from there.
I am interested in what you all have done as far as hats; all types, and if you made, bought, decorated, etc.
I bought the blank from JAS Townsend, hot glued the trim around the brim and crown, as well as the lace, and sewed it up for the tricorn. What a pain, but worth it, because I am proud of what I did.

Oh, huzzah!  I *love* the hat envy thread!  We had one on the old forum, and it was such fun!

Clover, your tricorn ROCKS!  And you're rockin' it, so way to go, girl!

***
As for me, I have the pillbox hat in my avatar, which I made from linen and plastic canvas:

Then there's my tapestry hat from Lionheart Hats at KCRF--totally not-period-of-anything, but totally fun:  (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/17691164/315717527.jpg)

(Click here for a Front View (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/17691164/315717528.jpg))

And I get *tons* of compliments on my straw hat, particularly when I tart it up with my garland from Heirlooms:

I have this lovely feathered thing that I purchased at a shop at ORF. It was actually one of my first Ren Faire buys, and has turned out probably to be my favorite:

I also have the muffin hat that I purchased from Opehlia's at ARF, which I tend to wear less than the other:

I don't believe either of these are really period, but, they're fun at least!

<== Thrift shop straw hat. 50cents, and still had the original price tags on it. Added some red cord for a hatband, and stuck in a couple of feathers. Light, airy, and has held up well so far.

I don't have any pictures of the current incarnation of my turban, but it's brutally simple I promise you.

These are some of the hats I've made for various members of the family:

This one is the first one I made for my first-ever Faire in 2004.  It's just a tube of fabric, stuffed, then embellished with ribbons and a few beads.

The one on the left is mine, the one on the right is my daughter's.  I made these using bristol board, covered with fabric, then embellished with ribbons and buttons.  The things at the front of each one are recycled earrings.  :D

My youngest son's hat.  Floppy green velvet hat. (Butterick pattern 5656)

My second son's hat.  I made this according to McCall's pattern 4805.

My oldest son's 1st hat.  Same as my youngest's hat, but with red velvet.

Hubby's newest hat...it still needs feathers.  Also McCall's pattern 4805.

Two views of "Capt. Lilla the Daring's" hat.

Two views of "Capt. Pyros the Red's" hat.

The two pirate hats were made from blanks bought at JAS Townsend.  Because I hate combining fabric and glue, I stitched the trims on.  For the flat trims, my machine was able to handle most of it, then I hand-stitched hubby's red marabou trim, and used buttons to form the tricorn.

OOH I loves me some hats too! I have to wear something on my head when I'm garbed up, or else I don't feel completely dressed. I'd love to start making my own hats, but it seems so daunting...right now I'm happy to purchase from and support talented artisans!

I have hat envy now. I must go find some more plumage for my hat. I was thinking about some antiquey buttons to sew around the brim but not look gaudy. I liked the anchor ones from JAS Townsend, and they weren't at a bad price.

Also, tomorrow I want to post pics I have of my straw wide brim floppy hat that I decorated. I called it Rosey Pirata. I tied a burgundy ribbon around for a hat band, sewed a big pretty red rose on one side, with a couple of rosey red buds, baby's breath and some shiny berry things and sewed up one side.  I can wear it with the one side flipped up, piratey, or turn it around with the flipped side in the back, where I look like something either out of Austen, or from the POTC movies. Either way, it's cute.  :P

Yeah, like I thought I looked dorky in hats- turns out that I only look good in certain ones... usually ones I can't wear in mundane public though (although... Imperial Officer's hat does look somewhat 'normal')

Hats normally worn at fair:

My cavalier hat made with a $15 hat blank bought at a fur trade rendezvous
http://historicgames.com/gifs/attire/fencingdoublet.jpg

My Scottish blue bonnet/balmoral (Everythings better with blue bonnet on it!)
http://historicgames.com/gifs/attire/Strib.jpg

I have a straw hat I bought at AZRF but no pics of it. It's similar to this one:
http://mrffriends.tripod.com/images/picture/swanson_james.jpg

---------
Hats for later periods

My gold trimmed tricorn with a white cockade bought from Flying Canoe Traders
http://photos-898.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v142/240/97/673048898/n673048898_350553_7815.jpg

And the new pith helmet with a Royal Scots badge added to the front.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b160/Groomporter/Misc/pith.jpg

------

Speaking of hats, Here's a tricorn tip to try. When my wife made her tricorn she used tiny snaps in the rim hidden in the lace trim rather than permanently sewing up the three sides -that way she can unsnap them so it takes up less room and can nest under another hat while it's in storage, or while traveling. The same thing could be done with a cavalier-style hat that one side folded up.

This is not the greatest pic by far of me in colors with my hat.  For those MNRFers, you may recall seeing me due to the very large Feathers (one red, one yellow).

Hat was purchased from a Merchant who's name I cannot recall out at Bristol.  It was located over by the Joust track along the outside ring of the faire.  The feathers were purchased from Excalibur.

Here's a Robin Hood hat my wife, Cheri, made for our 3-year-old son (I sewed on the feathers).

And here's the biggins she made for our 6-year-old daughter.

And here's the little ham with the biggins and a white straw hat we bought from the dollar section at Target. We removed the frilly ribbon and gaudy bow that came on it, and Cheri added the plain white ribbon.

Go to your Flickr photo page for this photo, and click on "all sizes". Choose a small or medium size, then scroll down to where it gives you the direct URL. Copy and paste that into the image code. Dona!!!

I see that hat more from the 1940's to the 60's. One can add some veiling, a brooch, smaller feathers to give it more of a vintage look. Must be made from a high quality Wool Felt.

Here's the hat I made for Lady Jai- on TJ's head for some reason.  It was made from a hat blank from Lady MacSnood.  I added bias tape and scroll gimp to the edge, and added some buttons to form the tricorn shape.  It's got some feathers that are kinda hiding in this shot.

Groomporter, I am miserable with posting links, so here is the item # of an Ebay seller that has them.

I bought my black felt pirate hat on Ebay, it was a blank and I just sewed the sides up, but these are already sewn.  They have tricorns and cavalier hats.

Totally not Ren-related, but I'm really happy with this hat I made. It took me all of half an hour with a kid's straw hat I cut the brim off of, a fancy cloth napkin, some feathers from Michael's, and a broach thing from Hobby Lobby. It was a lot of fun to make and stuff. Plus, I love the 40s.

Me with my tricorn at the STL PirateFest. simple hat, but very well made by the guys at the Pyrate Trading Co. ( http://www.pyrate.org (http://www.pyrate.org) ) I added the broach made from scraps of the coat that my "employer" wears.
Picture compliments of  Lord and Lady Alberon

I really do hate this next hat being called the Robin Hood hat.  With apologies to archers everywhere, Robin was not the only person to wear these hats, they were Quite popular in his time, and to some extent, were still popular into the early 1500's.  It seems that at most faires, there are only thee hat styles, and then those styles get decorated and trimmed differently.  I wanted my hat itself to be different for the everybody norm, not just the trim.
(this picture is not representative of my normal faire garb, I was at my friends Ren-wedding for this pic, so I was wearing my sword belt and leather doublet for the special occasion.

I've always worn hats different then what most would wear, my first few years in faire, I wore an "Italian Red Cap"

I don't remember where I got my hat, but I know it was ridiculously cheap! I added some button things around the top, and this year I really want some pheasant feathers or something. I need to go to Hobby Lobby.

Excuse the fact that this picture was taken... probably three years ago; I've been going to the Tennessee Renaissance Festival for six or seven years now, so they kind of all run together. It's not a very good picture of the hat, either, but for some reason I never get pictures of myself at the faire.

I have a flat cap and some others but they're boring to look at and I've wasted enough space. These were all purchased, but I'm working on making some now.

Question:  What's the appropriate type hat to wear with an Elizabethan Loose Gown (Spanish Surcoat)?

alas, no, i did not make any of those - i wish i could do millinery, but efforts normally prove unsuccessful when buckram is involved

i did make this heart shaped coif yesterday, accomplished only through the cunning lack of wires or buckram

I have regrets about the material used, but it's not bad for a first try:

did you free hand the pattern on this?  I don't have a coif pattern.  I know they are rather simple so I started working on mine.  I already started to sew the brim, but I have a feeling its not going to be wide enough.
Title: Re: Show Us Your Hats!
Post by: Tixi on May 07, 2009, 02:57:03 PM
I based it off of pattern pieces from Margo Anderson's Elizabethan Accessories (http://www.margospatterns.com/elizacc.htm) pattern manual.

I used
1) the standard coif circle x 2 and gathered it with two rows of stitching - it was a 14" diameter circle I decorated one of the pieces before gathering and the other served as lining. 14" was the perfect size.

2) a 25.5" x 2.25" band made of two pieces of the same size of turned fabric. that was attached to the gathered circle, right sides together

3) the heart-shaped brim - 2 pieces of fabriic, although the fabric I used was too translucent, and you could see the seam allowance on the inside when it was turned in. You could also use a rectangle that was rounded on two corners of the same long side like a really stretched out "D", as the standard coif pattern used.

I decided to use a piece from the french hood pattern though to make the front heart shaped brim. It was a varying depth like a curly brace character on the keyboard - and it was about 4-5" deep. The depth was greatest at the point over the forehead and the ear covers were slightly less deep at the apex of their curves.

The length of the brim piece I will have to measure when I get home from work, although the length of the brim would vary depending on how far you wanted it to come down over your cheeks. If you measure from below the bottom of the earlobe to below the bottom of your other earlobe (like a headband or earmuffs) with a flexible tailors measuring tape, and add seam allowances to both sides, that should be a suitable length.

I ripped stitches on this thing like 4 times because I couldn't get it quite right.

I first tried making the brim less deep, by using more than the standard seam allowance, but it looked strange because the band was too wide, so I ended up making the band less wide and leaving most of the full length of the brim.

I'll try to post some more pictures of the pieces and the length I used for the brim when I get home.

It was just one of those fab eBay finds. It doesn't have a tag or anything on it, and I haven't seen any like it since.

It was about $65, but I think it is likely worth more than that -- It's the kind of hat that makes you want to design a gown around it  :P

I made this Tuesday for my husband - he has a huge noggin, almost 2 feet around (...you know what they say about guys with big heads...) and it took me 3 tries to make one big enough.  But the good news is I have two extra hats (so far undecorated) just like it that fit me now lol.

I used the 'soft cap' Elizabethan Accessories pattern by Margo Anderson, but I had to use the instructions from Renaissance Tailor (http://www.renaissancetailor.com/demos_elizabethanhats.htm).

By the end of the day after the third try, I knew everything I did wrong and how to fix it, but didn't feel like making another one.

The pattern recommended I use a sheet of needlepoint plastic to stiffen the brim, which worked extremely well.

Oi...  got sucked into this website by Pipere...  Wow!  I've been searching Google for renfair pics and costume reference and there's a ton already here!

Here are two hats I've done.

The first is uber familiar- it's Nigel Armani's hat from the MichRenFest.  People have asked for closeups, here they are.  The other was worn briefly by a Mary Queen of Scots and a Countess character.  The Nigel hat is actually a LaPaloma base, then the feathers and other...  birds...  lights (yes it does light up with fiber optic lights)...  bees...  random foliage.. tribbles.... stuff is pinned and tucked to the crown and then secured with the gold flouncing.  I'm looking for ideas in how to reinforce the verticle crown without adding any more weight.  Ideas???

Well, I finally finished my new pirate hat.  I did it all by hand with hand sewing except part of the lace. I started sewing the 3 different colors of lace (cream, black and light pink) together to make it easier for attaching later. but the machine started acting up and snarling badly or breaking the needle so I ended up finishing that step by hand as well. All the other parts, the hat band, the little skulls on the hat band, the lace the ribbons (there is black on top of the lace edges and then the mauve color on the edge of the hat, and the fancy trim were all sewn by hand. I need to take a few stiches over my privateers pin to secure it so it doesn't get lost. I also want to secure the fake roses in better. They kept falling out so I suppose I will figure out how to sew them in as well. I have the burgundy one on top and the light pink on the bottom in from but it is reversed in back. I put the little skulls on every 3rd flower in the hat band ribbon to make it more piratey! and you don't notice it right away which is sort of cool.
Ok and I am not sure it is totally finished.  I had found some white pearls as I finished and went.. hmmm. A friend suggested I get cream, light pink and black pearls and have them draping and hanging off of it.. and I am seriously thinking of it.. a winter activity perhaps? And of course it needs way more pink, black, burgundy, gray and maybe white or cream feathers, some longer ones I am thinking as well. Yeah it may go through additions each year as I find them. I might choose later to not have the privateer's pin on it but for right now it works. I am also thinking of attaching a band on the inside where it rubs against my head, and to cover the threads that are there. still not sure what to put there and how to attach it securely. I will likely end up sewing something in there... and it needs to be gone over with a lint brush. But I had it done and wore it for the show I did on August 1st and wore it again last saturday for the Loveland Castle Knight's tourney.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v701/Ariyana/piratehattrim.jpg) the hat band, see the skulls I added?

Very fantastic on both of the hats!

Thanks for all the comments!

The feather section is actually four different pieces.  The three pieces that face forward and spill over the crown are the ostrich feather and pheasant plumes.  Two squares of black felt for each.  I glue three ostrich feathers and various pheasant feathers to a square of felt, then put a piece of felt on the back to "sandwich" the quills, leaving a flap of felt on the bottom and sides.  The section that faces backward has the lady Amherst, peacock and various other bobs.  That is a wide enough strip of felt to cover the three ostrich sections and press them against the crown of the hat when they're tied down.  I then stright pin the three ostrich sections directly to the crown, then the peacock one over it, then secure with a wide strip of gold fabric tie, leaving "tails" hanging down the back of the neck.  I add several more ties, winding them around the hat to stabilize the feathers and tie them off at the back.  I then creat a flounce by arranging the tails and straight pinning them directly to the back and side of the brim.

It is exceptionally secure.  I usually need to "repack" it twice a run just to keep it firm- and it NEVER is worn in the rain- the ostrich feathers are dyed and will run.  The stiffness of the ostrich plumes and the ties keep it upright, the peacock and pheasant feathers normally get farmed out and clipped every so often because they do break, I clip them down to the felt and glue in more.  I've yet to replace an ostrich feather, though I've clipped the worn tips off several to clean them up.

The top of the crown has already been reinforced with leather, but now the sides are starting to become weak, especially in the back where the weight of the feathers have been pushed against it.  The hat has reached maximum capacity.  Might be time for a new base!

No hat is ever finished!!!!  Great job!  The little details are what makes them so neat, it took people forever to figure out there was actually a small bird in Nigel Armani's hat!

I usually put black grosgrain ribbon around the inside of the band and handstitch it in.  I used to put cream or a color, but sweatstains show up really quick.  Wool tends to be too warm and changes the size because it's thick- and it's itchy on me..  Good luck!

Such creativity, here! I'm glad you started this thread, it gave me the nerve to try my hand, too.

I had an old cowboy hat that had gotten stained and unwearable, but was such good quality that I couldn't just toss it out. I took it to the hatter who made it, and had him re-block it as a tricorn (a new experience for him!). It didn't make a very big tricorn, but I'm not a big person, so I'm hoping it looks somewhat proportional to me. The first photo is courtesy of Photography on the Run. The second is the result of today's effort to create and add a simple cockade. I'm awaiting shipment of 10 ostrich plumes in white, black and red, and I hope to replace the black boa that I used to fill the brim last year with something prettier, though I'm not really sure how to go about that and make it look nice.

I'm having a great deal of fun with the hats this year!  Can't seem to get enough feathers.  ;D
This is another soft cap, Margo Anderson pattern.  Hat is made with upholstery style fabric, lined with cotton.  No internal structure.  The weight of the feathers caused them to topple a bit but it actually looked nice.

I made one slight modification to the goggles. They were plain black plastic (which I didn't realize when I ordered them since I was focused on the leather and filigree on the sides) so I drybrushed on some metallic glaze after a coat of Krylon Fusion to give the glaze something to stick to.

Here's my most epic hat so far... ;)  It's the lime green I wore before but I pulled it apart and started over.  It has a plastic grid internal structure for support.  9 feather plumes and clusters.  Orange band and some tulle to match my outfit.  The part you can't fully appreciate in this picture is the fibre optic lights peeking thru the feathers.  It looked fantastic at dusk.  8)

Epic hat and all, that outfit just makes me grin.  :D

Now you'll just have to get a shot with the fiber optics so we can all appreciate it.

The mask was plain white that I had painted by my artist friend then I added the jewels for sparkle.

This is my pirate hat. It was costume made by Renee, who is a very talented young hat maker (http://www.artfire.com/users/eccentricadventurerssupplyco). I wanted something that had flare, but didn't want a lot of feathers. This is the end result.

Front view:

Right Side: Yes, I have a little sign that says "Knock Knock." A lady at a booth suggested it a few weeks earlier and I couldn't say no.

Left side view: The only change I made was to the original button, which wasn't quite what I was looking for. So, after a trip to Joan's and about 20 minutes of work, I had a button I liked a bit more. It also has a nice feather pin.

Sorry for your loss :-(...

I've got one more year on my current costume. I really like your layered look.

One of my former groups (the Gentlemen Adventurers) used a similar look. But there's was a more "rugged" (using leathers and wool) as opposed to the lighter more courtly look of yours!

This was taken of me at the Yellowstone Highland Games in Billings, Mt. The festival started on Friday evening, so a small contingent of us- myself included- went on Thursday so we could get our village set up before the rest of the group arrived Friday afternoon. There were 4 of us. The other three went to get lunch after setup was complete, and I stayed behind as security (the festival took place in a zoo, and there were lots of people milling around!) Festival policy said that there was to be no camping out on site, but nothing in the policy said anything about no napping on site! So I took advantage of that small loophole, only to find that some smarta$$ got ahold of my camera and took a picture of me! I opened one eye just in time to catch him! So anyways, this is my hat- my green Highland bonnet.

Do not disturb sleeping Ren Scots! We get grumpy... and we're usually armed, and good with said arms! That's probably why the SCA won't fight us any more...  ;D

Hi all,

I'm new...but I'm not able to show you my 'hat' yet. I'm really not into being historically accurate (just not me!). BUT, I am totally into doing whatever the heck you want to at a ren faire to get into the spirit.

Maybe this is for another thread, and please don't hesitate to tell me so, but I've always loved feathers. I've seen a lot of feather shops at the Ren faire pop up with nice little clippies, hats, etc.

I saw a gorgeous feather flower with a birdcage veil. Now I KNOW this is historic in some way, lol. But if I"m wearing a corset and a bustled skirt and a birdcage veil for my 'hat' do you think I'm going to look ridiculous?

I just love the darn thing, and honestly, only place I would wear it!

Most Faire's I've been to are very forgiving of people just wanting to dress up even if it's not strictly in "period" for that particular faire.  That being said your outfit sounds like it would fit wonderfully into the "Steampunk" genre which seems to be getting more and more popular recently.  I went to a Steampunk Con in New Jersey this year and spent the whole weekend running around in a corset and victorian style tricorn hat.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/reneesance/4946209914/

I had to laugh my butt off at that. My dog does the same, ANY head covering and she thinks I'm a mass murderer.

If I take it off and put it down, then she kills said 'offender.'

That reminded me of a time when I walked out of my bedroom and my roomates dog went nuts and started barking at me all because I had rollers in my hair. She was a large lab mix and it really made me nervous to see her so riled up when she was normally such a big baby. Once I started talking to her she calmed down. :D

Just finished crocheting this tricorn hat for my 5 month old.  I already had the yarn and figured it would be cute and cheap, since he'll only wear it once or twice at LARF in a few weeks.

Ok, here are the hats I've been decorating for AHE at TRF this year... one for my daughter and one for the friend who will be coming with us.  My daughter wasn't planning on having a hat, but our friend showed up one day with this cheap faux distressed leather look tricorn hat from the Halloween Store for her, and it actually had pretty good lines, so I just ran with it...  LOL  (sorry for the blur... but it was 4am when I took the pics, and the tripod was in my daughter's room attached to her telescope at the time)

N's hat, front view with Humphrey the Rennie Fairy hamster riding in his spot, along with one of the favors I made for TRF last year...

Right side, with favors my daughter was given at RenDezvous this year at Scarby...

Back view, more favors...

Left side, with the RenDezvous pin designed by Lady Joyce Ann, who so very sweetly gifted it to my daughter (sealing her place in my heart forever)!  I found the pistol pin online, and the rose is an antique silver lapel pin I've had for years.  I couldn't resist the whole Guns-n-Roses look...  :D
(http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs452.ash2/72564_1537426888004_1604843044_31300528_5131327_n.jpg)

The gold studs gave it a bit more bling, and the scalloped trim was a Hancocks Fabrics score that just set off the whole thing perfectly...  Well, my daughter loves it, at least!  ;)

Here's a front shot of the hat I did for the friend who brought us the first one.  When she saw what I did to it, she decided she wanted her own, and showed up on my doorstep with big 'ole puppy dog eyes...  ::)  heheh

Aaaaand finally... the hat pins I made when I was finished, just because I was inspired...

okay, I finally took some pictures of the wizard hat I made for TRF this past season. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of me in full garb, b/c I don't know where the cable for my camera went. I took these pictures with my iPod.

The hat is constructed in several layers. The brim is a piece of cardboard that my desk had come packed in. On top of that is a plastic poncho to water proof it, and then on top of that is dyed muslin. The crown is the hood from an old rain jacket covered in the same dyed muslin. The whole thing was then sprayed with a waterproofing spray.

The bottom side of the brim is covered in brown burlap (which I also used to make a sleeveless robe to go under my cloak). The edge of the brim is wrapped with yarn, and the brim extends 7-8 inches out from the crown (which fits my head like a glove!)

In the first pic you can see that the brim has warped a little--the cardboard has gotten a little battered, but that one flipped up spot on the left side of the picture is where the cardboard had a fold in it, so that's not really my fault  ;D

You should!  It was super easy.  If you add a fur brim, if it tuns up into the hat, add 1 more inch or so to the circumference of the fabric.  The fabric is the perfect size but after I added the fur it shrunk the circumference a bit!  The next one I will add an inch to. ;)

Got an awesome deal on this muffin hat on ebay, only $10.00 shipped!  Dark green corduroy material, with a little stretchy band in the back to fit a range of noggins.  The feathers are just secured with a pin, I'm going to look for some kind of small brooch pin to hold those on better.

I'm abjectly ashamed to say that I have not... I've been busy with work, and making jewelry, and learning about wire wrapping... but I haven't sewn anything except the dress I wore to SoonerCon in absolutely ages!  I'm still in love with that hat, though, and I want to make some of them for this winter!  It's kind of hard for me to make things for winter in the spring and summer, though... (and a lot easier to procrastinate then, as well!)  ::)  :D

It's not Ren, but I made my first ever non-straw-based hat, to go along with my 18th c floral polonaise. I used the Butterick pattern, substituting hand-sewing for wherever it said glue. It's made out of buckram, a cotton-blend brocade fabric which I dyed light blue, and lined with muslin. I decorated it with two feathers I picked up at various faires, one feather I got from ebay in a huge lot and then dyed, satin ribbon, a bird I found at Michaels, and flowers from the LA fabric district. And it all stayed on during my sail at the Norcal Pirate Fest today (thanks to a handmade hatpin and the ribbon ties). Overall, I'm pretty pleased.

Very nice, Lady Rebecca. Your Hat making skills are improving with each hat you make.

I have a Vouge Vintage Hat pattern that would make an 18th Century hat as well by adding more to the brim. Thanks for the idea. I have plenty of Linen scraps that would work nicely for such a hat!

The hat I made in time to wear at this year's CONVergence. Steampunk was the theme. So many Top Hats with goggles. Ideas to fill me for next year's projects.

Side shot showing fabric detail. I had large enough scraps to cover the Buckram form and finish the broim edges. The Goggles came from Museum Replicas. The small light at the side actually clicks on. Cool when the Party room areas were dark.

Just finished this mini-topper... after working on it all night.  I drafted the pattern myself, but it still needs a couple of tweaks... and I do plan to make more.  I used chenille for this one.  Never again.  I now officially dislike sewing with upholstery chenille!!!  It's worse than velvet to work with...

so many nice hats in this thread. Are hats hard to make? They look difficult to me.
Title: Re: Show Us Your Hats!
Post by: gem on August 02, 2011, 01:31:23 PM
Alaric, the answer is, "it depends!" Some hats are very easy to make, others are more complicated. The pillbox-style hat in my avatar, for instance, was terrifically easy, as was the Henrician bonnet (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/22511199/376230390.jpg) I posted about several pages ago. In general, soft/sewn hats (flat caps (http://ny-image1.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.130964909.jpg), muffin caps (http://www.noelcostumier.net/Bagcap_copy.jpg), cauls (http://www.sempstress.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/DCP_4960.JPG)/coifs, etc) tend to be easier to make than structured hats like the tall hat (http://www.talltoad.net/images/tall/Lg/TH-BLKS.jpg) or the top hats posted in this thread. Hats like tricorns, Cavaliers, or other sort of "piratey" hats are pretty easy, as you generally start with what's called a "hat blank," or an unfinished hat you trim out yourself. I'm currently engaged in a battle of wills with a recalcitrant escoffion (which is just a fancy sort of caul, and so it has no call being difficult), but I am determined to emerge victorious!

gem i suggest you decide what you want and go for it. the first had i ever created was a zorro hat for a halloween party i took cardboard and covered it with black cloth. it was a pretty good success for my first one the second one i took a hat i found at walmart for five dollars and that was the base of my blue hat the second i created i found a black felt hat online that lined up with what i wanted for my hat and then i added the roses the lace the pins and the feathers

My newest hat. I spent a little over an hour, the night before I needed it. I had shaped the straw of a huge hat I found at a flea market, then added a gathered taffeta pouf (with netting inside for extra fullness) over the crown, and a huge roll of tulle around the brim. It's topped off with the huge taffeta bow, three ostrich feathers, and the little sparkly piece.

And did I mention it's HUGE? :)

It was too hot to go outside this weekend, so I hid in my sewing room and made a hat!

I found the fabric as a small remnant piece and knew I wanted to make some sort of hat out of it.  Looking back, a top hat might not have been the easiest choice - matching up those stripes, ugh!  I finally declared "good enough!" and moved on.

This is the other, floofy side:
Not sure its quite floofy enough, though.  Can't have too many feathers, right?

ps:  anyone know how to make images smaller?  Mine always seem to post huge!

I have been bitten by the Victorian Bug.  Can't hardly comptete with Lady Rebecca's gorgeous pale blue cloud of heavenly beauty (can you tell I LOVE that hat)  but this was my fun, rather Zeuss-ish version of the Victorian Hat.   Nothing is too over the top!  I am considering having anchor bolts installed in my skull.

Oh that is fantastic! What did you use as a base?

Oh and to keep it on your head you could stitch in some combs or some barette blanks that way you can literally make it so it wont go anywhere.

100% scrap used for this piece.   It is built over the brim of an old wal-mart straw hat.  Wired the brim edge - cut off the crown and replace with gross grain X to perch it higher on the head.   Then black shirred taffeta like mushroom gills on the under brim - Gold Christmas ribbon around the top side and bound the edge with black velvet (old skirt)   Then made a mop cap style crown and glued around opening and stuffed with old wedding veil.  Added a button at center (off old commencement hat) Plumes are from my old fan that got wet - flowers are from an arrangement the cat destroyed and the cream is more Christmas ribbon.  Flowers on the back used to be on my Ren basket.  Feathers are anchored to a plastic half moon cut from a chinese soup lid.  The hardest part was remembering that Hot glue is just that.. HOT.   Sewing is much less dangerous.  I think I will add a set of ties to go under the back.  I have very thin hair and not much of it to comb or pin to, and no bun to anchor to.

I just made my first flat cap (to match the hubby's doublet), and it turned out fine.
Sewing skills needed are negligible, however you will need a machine unless you plan to hand sew the project.

Very nice Magpie!!!

Hats get easier the more you make them. Even after 20 yers of making Hats for costumes when I worked at the Costume shop, I am still learning some new things about them.

Finished this one this weekend.  Its a little jaunty pillbox made of dupioni silk and black velvet.  I'm quite happy with it.  (http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/305966_10150702588479796_331736629795_9302190_792360109_n.jpg)

Its a wired buckram base, about 2" tall and 7" across.  I covered it in flannel first, then the velvet and silk.  I had originally thought of quilting the top with silver thread and pearls, but my friend Arianna came up with the idea of using strips of the silk as its own cross-hatching.  Since its made of buckram, I need to go back and spray it generously with some water proofing so it won't melt in the rain.

I've been wanting a new hat this season, and after a couple of epic fails (a beaded coif I could not get to cooperate and the infamous straw hat that inspired the Garb Fail thread) I was hoping to find something at KCRF. We had a new hat vendor last year that sold more historical pieces, but they did not return this season. :(

But. This caught my eye on Opening Day at Lionheart Hats, and I'd been ducking back in to peek at it every weekend. Finally wore one of the ensembles I had in mind for it yesterday, and... well, you can see how it worked out:

Kethel calls it a "biretta," and it's a sort of cross between a muffin cap and a Tudor bonnet (the crown and brim, not visible in the photo, are green cotton velvet). She said she was also inspired by the Landsknecht era--hence the obnoxious fringe. ;D (The first day I tried it on, I had on my cream/gold snood, and it looked even better!) I'm looking forward to seeing what else it looks good with.

Gem... I am so in love with that hat!!!  Do you think you might take a couple of pics of the crown and the back side, please, so I can see how it's made, and what it looks like from other angles?  Is the brim the same width all the way around, or a little wider in the front than the back?

Oh, and I think the "obnoxious fringe" is wonderful!!!  It gives it such a jaunty air, and makes it very festive!  Lovely!!!
Title: Re: Show Us Your Hats!

I'll try to get some shots in the next day or so, but here's one (the only one, actually) from Lionheart's website: http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f56/LionHeartHats/fringedberretta1.jpg In general shape, it's like an oversized muffin cap with a very wide brim (Milord says it looks like Strawberry Shortcake's classic hat, and I don't really want to know why he knows that.).

The name of the hat is a bit confusing. The tag on my hat clearly says New Biretta, but this hat looks nothing like a biretta (https://www.google.com/search?q=biretta&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=eIdiUL-7I7C_0QG184HQBw&biw=1173&bih=753&sei=eodiUJajE6bw0gGJmoHQDQ). On their website, however, they spell it berretta, not to be confused with the gun manufacturer. ;)

And yes: the obnoxious fringe is the BEST part!

I did go looking and found that one shot on their website, but it looks like the brim on yours is quite a bit wider than the one on the gentleman's hat, so maybe a bit different for ladies than for men, or maybe it just varies hat to hat?  Either way, I think it's beautiful, and it frames your face so nicely!  Is the brim stiffened with buckram, or some such, or is it softer than that?  It's hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like it has a bit of shaping to it, more than just being folded up on one side.

I don't have any ren hats yet, but am making my garb for a steampunk ball. I found this hat (without decoration) at a Goodwill store for $2. These are two decorations I've come up with so far. Still haven't decided which one I like the best, though I'm leaning toward the black lace with a few more feathers ...

My first ren hat. I wasn't sure how to finish the brim so that it would lay flat at the outer seams, and then I remembered that I had this cream-colored braid laying around. I like how it dresses it up. Tomorrow is an SCA event, so I'll get to test it out.  ;D

Thanks gem! Yes, I used McCall's M4864. I actually cut this out several years ago and then set it aside. In the meantime I lost the envelope and instructions, so hadn't tried to assemble it. I've got an SCA event tomorrow and am VERY short on garb, so I decided it was about time to figure out how to put this together. :) I'm not generally a hat person but I really like this style. After I live with it awhile and know what colors the rest of my garb will be, I'm sure I'll make another one.

I have that pattern! Is the hat multi-sized? Never mind--you don't know! LOL I might have to dig that out and make a hat this weekend!

(This pattern used to get raves for the fit of the doubet, btw. Nice pattern with a collar!)
Title: Re: Show Us Your Hats!
Post by: GryffinSong on February 08, 2013, 07:31:28 PM
Yes, gem, its multi-sized. There are parallel lines around the inside of the rim to guide you. I just cut it out at the smallest size and then tried on the brim. It worked out perfectly for me. I'm sure that must be the pattern, because I do think I used to have a doublet pattern. I hope I can dig it up ... if not I might have to buy another copy and try the doublet.

edited to add: the pattern pieces were still pinned to the fabric ... that's the only reason I didn't lose the hat pattern along with the rest of it!!! Now that I've made it, though, I can see how easy it would be to make it from scratch. Once you know how big to make the hole for your head the rest is simple.

Enjoy!!!

Thanks. :)

I made a second hat today in the same style. I pulled in the dimensions by 1/2 inch all the way around, which I really like. The slightly smaller scale seems to suit me better, and is actually the way the pattern is meant to be used. I hadn't understood all the lines around the edges when I cut out the first one, so the first one has a wider brim and cap than the pattern intends. This fabric is also stiffer than the first, so I didn't need to use any stabilizer. Overall, I think I like this one better than the first. I only had a small amount of this fabric and have been aching to use it for something. I'm thrilled that I finally found a project of the right size for it.

That is a gorgeous hat!
I have avoided leather pirate hats mainly because they are either to plain, too cheap looking, or they had so much trim that they looked like Liberace would have liked to have one.
  This is.....perfect!
It would even make me abandon the head rag-by-itself look.

My chemise in the ship, is pretty fancy, though I suppose not HA unless a lady pirate got creative one day. But all very Lacey and frou frou. I needed something to tone it down a bit and the suede lining color matched so perfectly I couldn't pass it up.

I had planned on vending at Faire only opening weekend this year, but it has worked out that I can do it all five weekends.....so I'm trying to mix up my garb with a few new accessories so I don't look like I am wearing the same thing all the time. Thank you.  It has become a signature piece for me.  Alyxx Iannetta has a blog diary of her making a Saxon gown.  I used her instructions as a guide, but scaled it down to a size I found more manageable.  The "goldehaube" worn under the hat was made by someone other than myself.

Finally, I have something to share in here again...  I've been working on the design of my mini-toppers for Steampunk, and these two were commissioned by Lishy for her daughter and herself to wear to Space City Con earlier this month.

This last photo shows how the center medallion is  two pieces of filigree, separated by a spacer. Next time I do something similar I'm going to try and figure out a way to make the front piece actually turn.  I used a tiny watch screw to secure it in place, and if I had put both pieces together before I attached them to the hat it might have occurred to me to try... but this design was just a happy accident that occurred to me as I was immersed in the "design process".  LOL  Oh, and I am looking into using actual functioning clock mechanisms in future designs, as well!  :D

Rani, those are *glorious!* I love the olive and dusty violet together.

I was digging through an old junk jewelry tin earlier this week (for an ornament for my Obnoxious Saxon Tellerbarret), and ran across a vintage pair of clocks-and-gears earrings that are like 25 years old. I vaguely remember wearing them, but I am totally earmarking them for a future steampunk project!!

Thank you, Gem!  I'm sorry for the color misrepresentation, but the olive is actually paired with a dusty milk chocolate, instead of the pale dusty violet it appears to be.  I had a lot of fun with both of these hats, and I'm looking forward to making lots more!  I will be vending at a couple of upcoming Steampunk events, and I'm hoping they will be popular with the crowds!

I would LOVE to see the earrings, and see what you do with them!  :)

Oh, thank you, Rowan!  How nice!  I've worked a lot on the construction, and they are seriously sturdy, and will stand up to anything short of a hard rain!  They have 3 layers of materials for the crown, including one of stiffened craft felt and one of softer fashion felt (although I will be using some woven brocades in the future, as well), and 5 layers for the brim, with 16 gauge copper wire sandwiched between the layers for shaping.  I've also covered every seam and every edge with one sort of trim or another... so they aren't at all flimsy, and I LOVE layering all of the trims and the metal bits and pieces together!

I'll probably never be able to sell them for enough to cover the time I put into each one... but I'll keep making them because they are so much FUN!  :)

Rani, those are amazing!!!  :)

By contrast, this is a simple thing, but I just finished this pirate hat for next weekend's pirate weekend at MDRF. I knew it was going to be hot, so found a black woven hat at the local thrift store to use instead of the heavy felt blank I have. The felt blank will become another pirate hat for the fall.

I rolled and sewed the edges down about 3/4" to help give it more structure, and a little less brim, added buttons to hold the tricorn shape, and added some lace for a hysterically inaccurate lady pirate. I have a gorgeous ostrich plume I was planning to use, but I'm kind of liking it plain. Still dithering on that.

Thanks, cuz!  Maybe we can do some bartering next time I'm down there!  I would LOVE to get a journal for a certain young lady... one that she can latch, somehow.  :)

Thank you!  :)

I love your tricorn!  It's very elegant, and I am definitely one to appreciate staying a bit cooler under a hat!  I can usually only wear a full hat when it's REALLY cold out, so something that breathes is wonderful in the heat!  The peek-a-boo lace is wonderful, also, and the buttons give it a lovely focal point!

I think I would like to see pics of it with the plume, though, just to see the difference!  You could always glue the plume into a small bead cone, then affix a pin back to it, and have a removable plume, for those occasions when you want a little extra bounce and flutter!  ;)  heheh

So... admiring all the lovely hats in this thread, while simultaneously cleaning the garb room. How does everyone store their hats, particularly the ones with elaborate trimmings? I'm guilty of hanging mine from bedposts, where they do get fairly dusty in the off-season, and at the moment there is a rather Slobokidna-esque (http://www.amazon.com/Caps-Sale-Peddler-Monkeys-Business/dp/0064431436) stack of them on a cabinet in my bedroom... There must be a better way, but many are too large/adorned to fit well in hat boxes.

I store mine on a shelf, covered in plastic shopping bags.  Put them in crown first, then tie the handles or tuck them under the brim.  They stay dust free and the bags protect the feathers from getting crushed.   We take the entire package with us when we go on the road, and if the bags get ripped, just head to the nearest Walmart and buy something.
Joann's and Hancock's have bigger ones suitable for the Cavalier hats or for hats with large feathers,  I save those up.
I don't have room for hatboxes, and even if I did, I'd end up using them for some other purpose.  ;D
Oh, and I use the bags to store my feather fan in, too.   Perfect for when it's perched on the stack of garb in the back seat.

I just send my hats flying off to their forever homes, where it is someone else's problem, entirely!   8)

I'm thinking about making some cute little mini witches hats, very soon...   :D

Rani! Those hats are GORGEOUS!!!!

The 1st Box of laces came in. So many! Must be close to 500 Yards. I sorted them all out into separate ZIP LOCK bags and put a BOUNCE Dryer sheet in them to freshen them up. Many of these Venice laces go back to the 1960's. Some very unique designs used for wedding Dresses. They will be perfect for Hats for Victorian ensembles and those lovely hats you make.

I will put an assortment together for you. When you see them, you will be thinking Victorian Blouses, Skirtings, etc.

So many nice hats!  I finally have one to show.  I purchased the "base hat" from Mspurdy on Etsy three years ago.  It's a mini riding hat with black feathers, netting and roses.  It was just too black.

I added the brown feathers, netting and ribbon.

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa108/Gina3102/20130903_193435.jpg (http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa108/Gina3102/20130903_193435.jpg)

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa108/Gina3102/20130903_193410.jpg (http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa108/Gina3102/20130903_193410.jpg)

And I store my hats flat on shelves in large plastic shopping bags. I spread out the bottom of the bag, put the hat straight in and then tie the top of the bag so it loosely covers the hat.   The hats stay flat and dust free.  All of my feathers are removable, so they go into storage in long plastic bags which are also kept flat on shelves.

Regarding hat storage.  I have traveled twice by plane, and several times by car with my German hat.  I use a cake carrier and keep it with me as carry-on!  The contents are visible to security screeners, and gets a chuckle from the usually serious personnel.

Hat boxes, from Hobby Lobby!!!!! I had a stack of them I was using to store various patterns and other non-hatly things. When reorganizing the sewing room, and trying to figure out where the heck to put my hats, I had an epiphany... the stinkin' hat boxes, duh!

;D

I just may have to do that.  I have a couple of hats now that qualify as  'non stack-able'; which is what hat boxes are for....
I will hie myself to Hobby Lobby, or perhaps to Gordman's .  They have them in the home fashion department as decorations, and they are very probably cheaper than the Lobby....

I decided that the answer to "feather or no feather" is "three feathers." Of course now that I've started, I might very well add some more.  ;D

Thanks! I just got back from the thrift store where I found the PERFECT earrings to go with it. No only large, scrolled hoops for the bottom holes, but two sets of small hoops to go above them. All scrolled in a dark metal that looks like pirate treasure or something. I'm so psyched to see how everything will look together. :)

I'm not sure it counts as a hat, but it's certainly headgear!

I made my first French hood a few weeks ago! My garb just didn't seem complete without some sort of headgear. :D This image is before I added the black hood part on the back, but I have no photos of it complete in decent lighting yet!
