Title: How would one peace tie a spear?
Post by: Bonny Pearl on April 29, 2010, 06:02:05 PM
Hoping this is the right area to post this question.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what would be acceptable when it comes to peace tying and spear heads....

Any pics so I can get a visual?

Thanks!

Most likely you'd need a sheath for the head that could be secured in place, like the blade covers you'll find on axes.

I found it on this site: http://www.by-the-sword.com/acatalog/La_Tene_Celtic_Spear_AH-3537.html and I'm very interested in it but I'm weighing the facts of having to cover it and you'd never see the artistry and then what the heck am I gonna do with it when I get tired of carrying it around lol.

Many faires don't allow their entry >:(. Others require the spear head be covered in a sheath like assembly, much like what was mentioned ::). There are some though that allow the entry of the spear ;D, but then you have to weigh the consequences of bringing it, and attempting to shop in covered facilities, stopping for entertainment at the pub, where does one find a rack for the spear? :P

I purchased a European lance head, and attached it to a 13' staff, so that the Beausant pennant could be flown prowdly from it, alas the only place it has been displayed is the great room of the family castle. :'(

Bonny, I peace tied a spear by using a length of fur, and wrapped with leather cording. It was acceptable at TRF.

At the 1998 West Texas Renaissance Festival in Buffalo Gap (near Abilene), I ordered a Damascus Blade Dagger from the sword maker who was there from Idaho.  For his budget model daggers, he started with steel cable ~ 1-1/2" in diameter, rather than many layers of flat steel like he used in his multi-thousand dollar swords.  Since the surface pattern of a Damascus Blade is cool to see, I didn't want the scabbard to cover it - just wanted the sharp edges covered.  There was a young lady with a Leathercrafts booth at Scarborough Faire in the late 90's who made a custom scabbard for my dagger.  I can't remember her name, but she married one of the young guys in the Corsairs singing group.  EDIT:  I just checked the Corsairs Crew page (http://www.corsairs.com/TheCrew.htm), and figured out that she married William "B.J." Hudson.

Custom Scabbard that allows the face of the Dagger Blade to be seen.

Thanks all!

I will get with the person who is crafting my leather garb and see if he can make something similar to what you did Dbaldock.

I think I will have to 'dress up' the spear with some fur & leather strands/pieces as well.  That would look cool. :)

Now how to carry the bugger when my arms are tired lol, can you wear a spear like one would wear a sword?  For example like the way I see men carrying broadswords on their back?  I think I'm going to have to have the spear itself shortened a bit as I'm not very tall anyway, so I was thinking of what I can do....

Oh and Warrior Monk, you need to come to TRF!  They let us have all kinds of toys!  ;D
