Title: Owain Phyfe
Post by: raevyncait on July 23, 2012, 04:26:27 PM
Some of ya'll on Facebook may have already heard, but Owain Phyfe is currently hospitalized near his home. He has had a biopsy, but no results are known yet.

Like so many of our performer & vendor friends on the Circuit, he has no medical insurance. RESCU has been contacted and the paperwork necessary there is in process, but that takes time. No work = no pay.

Fundraising has begun. And if you'd like to contribute, this open group on Facebook has several people's posts about either sending money via paypal to a specific person, or people who are donating a portion of their sales etc. for a specific time period, and an address for Owain & Paula if you wish to send money directly.

Also, prayers, good vibes, whatever are most appreciated.

Has anyone been able to glean out of all the noise just exactly what happened? I heard cancer, then not cancer, then by-pass, then cancer again.

This is one of many posts from Facebook regarding Owain's condition.

"Latest information on Owain from Jamie Haeuser: "Owain had a small leak between his small intestine and stomach which caused inflammation in the area. He also had a small and, as it turns out, unrelated spot on his lung. The lung biopsy showed that was NOT cancer but a fungus. The bypass operation was to bypass - by disconnection one part and attaching it to another - the area with the small leak. The abdominal mass is still there but now the physicians can deal with that straightforwardly. He may need chemotherapy; he may need more surgery." Jamie went on to say this is the information she's gotten from Owain and Paula - not from the physician."

Owain posted this to his own Facebook page today:

"This has not been fun, nor anticipated. After eighteen excruciating days, I have just returned home from the hospital. I look (and feel) like the Green Man, after a Colorado forest fire. The good news: I am once again in the safe care of my favorite, and very capable nurse, Lady Paula.

Dear, Friends, I am so deeply touched by your out-pouring of well wishes and your gifts of financial help.
I am so blessed. After all, I'm just some little guy who plays the great songs of Ancient Times, at little venues across the country, loving what I do, but still trying to scratch out a living.

It's time now to take-on the cancer directly. Thank you for adding to my resolve. During the eighteen days of hospitalization, I didn't have to struggle to conger up personal theories and thoughts on the 'meaning of life,' No. I just laid back, armed with your sentiments, and learned the lessons from you. Thank You."

He says "cancer" but isn't specific about what kind or where. Regardless of what it is, I'm going to continue sending good thoughts!

Just posted on the Facebook group:

From Jamie Haeuser --
"We have some news. Owain Phyfe has pancreatic cancer that has spread to the stomach. He starts radiation therapy in two weeks. His pancreatic function remains normal. I'm going to talk to some oncologist friends tomorrow and see what it means. In the meantime, Owain is happily at home with Lady Paula, sleeping in his own bed and eating light meals. He had a thimble full of cabernet. They are also looking at alternative therapies. Owain, I recommend Amarone over wheat grass."

Just placed my order for the CD. I will gladly offer what help I can for the Bard of Hollygrove, although it has been many years since I have seen him perform.

Question: I have had my CD for a week now and it is great, and I know Rio and a few others will be selling them at the Michigan Faire as well. Does anyone know if there is another "Owain Back Stage" pass being sold for RESCU as well this year? I will be coming to Mich Faire as usual this fall and I would like to get another one.

Thanks

From fb update...

This was posted by Jamie Haeuser, who has been our liaison between Owain Phyfe's and his wife Paula, and the rest of the Renaissance Festival world:
"We need prayers and thoughts and energy. We need love and light for Lady Paula."
For those who do not know him, Owain is probably the best interpreter and performer of true renaissance songs to ever grace a Renaissance Festival stage. He has a very aggressive cancer, and I would consider it a personal favor if any of you (even if you don't know him or his music) to include them in your prayers for the next few days.
Thank you.

My heart sinks at hearing this.  He played at Peoria in June, and when I told him that we've missed him for so many years not being at Bristol, he said he'd love to come back.  I told him I would write to the entertainment director and ask for him to come back.

He looked great in June, and sounded great as well.  It must have happened pretty quickly, and when I first found out, I started praying for him.  He is so well-loved.  Many, many times at Bristol this summer, at the end of their shows, different entertainers asked the audience to keep Owain in their thoughts and prayers, even if they didn't know who he was.

Update from Jamie over on the "We Love Owain Phyfe" fb page....

So here's a Paula update - nice long chat with her yesterday. She continues in fine form; she has lots of support there. Their two sons live there, and people are doing chores for her. The two boys next door grew up to have a lawn business and are doing her gardening. She is at the hospital a lot, but also has time for her "altar" in her kitchen. She asked me to again tell you all how much the funding, love and prayers mean to Owain and to her.

I'm sure we all continue to keep Owain, Lady Paula and their family in our hearts and prayers...

Facebook posts are reporting that Owain has passed away. I would hope this isn't true.

Sadly, I believe Merlin is correct.  I just logged into Facebook and his page is full of well wishes as he travels beyond.  I came here to see if I could find confirmation of what I was reading.

My heart is heavy.

Yes, I heard that Owain had passed away as well.  My husband had the honor of playing along side Owain at the St. Louis
Renaissance Faire for many years.  He shall be greatly missed.

Unfortunately it is true. Owain passed quietly away today surrounded by family. God has called him home to play for him. And what better person to do so. He will be truly missed.

I wasn't privileged to know Owain as well as the rest of you, but I'm blessed to have met him and been charmed by his magic voice. Fair winds, Owain, 'till we all meet again.

We've all been down today since we heard the news. My daughter was almost sobbing. Such a good man with a great heart. I'm SO glad we made sure to see him Memorial Day weekend & have him sing my daughters favorite song one more time.

Please remember while we miss the Bard, Lady Paula will still need some assistance dealing with this financially.

A post from Master Owain and Lady Paula's dear friend Jamie, with details of memorial services scheduled:

****

Owain has left us.

With him when he passed was his beloved Lady Paula, his brother Norman, his sons and daughter in law. He was not in pain. He will be with us forever.
...
No funeral will happen. Instead, a pair of celebrations of his beautiful life and wondrous gifts will take place. One, this coming Saturday at the Michigan Faire - 7 PM in the large white pavilion next to the castle. If so moved, bring a dish to share and your beverage of choice. Two, at the Sherwood Forest Faire Celtic Festival in Texas, September 22-23, details to be announced. And maybe one more at my house in Louisiana in November.

Thank you, on behalf of Lady Paula and Owain, for all your stories and prayers and energy. It meant so much.

I have this notion that Owain just decided his work was done here. I wonder where he is singing now? Whatever your belief, join me in thanking God, Goddess, Providence or your choice of deity or fate that this lovely, lovely man was with us for as long as we were meant to have the pleasure of his company. Thank you, Mr. Phyfe.

What an amazing man, with amazing music. I wish I could shake his hand once more....

Does anyone know the best way to get a hold of his music?  I regret that I was never able to get any of his music when I saw him live.

Owain's albums are available through CDBaby from Nightwatch Recording - http://www.cdbaby.com/group/nightwatch (http://www.cdbaby.com/group/nightwatch)

He's on the albums listed as - "Owain Phyfe", "Owain Phyfe with L'Ensemble Josquin", "Owain Phyfe & The New World Renaissance Band", and "The New World Renaissance Band".

The instrumentalists who play with him as "The New World Renaissance Band" are the group "Cantiga".

I do not know which albums by other musicians that Owain may have performed on.

Take Care,
David Baldock

There is also a cd of Wolgemut with Owain recorded live at Pennsic. We bought our copy at TRF; possibly it is available through Wolgemut's page.

His voice over near the wine tasting was one of most memorable things
Also him running around with a Redneck Wine Glass
