Title: Our Northern Kindred?
Post by: Elennare on December 16, 2008, 11:57:00 AM
It's too quiet in here.  Sure, I like to sit and talk with the trees, but I also like to talk with my fellow elves as well, so I thought I would try to get some conversation going.   ;)

This time of year everyone talks about Santa, but his "elves" don't get much of a mention.  Do they really enjoy making toys, or is that just spin?  Are they really elves in the first place, or some sort of related fae?  Elves are tall and noble and have a thing for trees (to be very general).  Santa's elves are very small, goofy, and like to spend all their time making toys.  That sounds much more like some sort of fairy to me.  Perhaps the confusion came about in the Victorian era, when all fae got lumped together into one hybrid creature that went by "elf," "fairy," "brownie," etc equally?

Discuss.

I think elves are just quiet sorts!
I am sure Santa's pixies are very busy right now! LOL!
I am half elven and do love green growing things.
Wizards are not around much lately either! We need more magick in the Realm!
Come out magical creatures!

Christmas elfs and fantasy elves are not the same species despite
> them having near identical names.

See, I wasn't talking about fantasy elves, though they fit my description too.  They're rather hard to find, due to aforementioned Victorians, but if you can find the REALLY old myths about elves, one will find that they are very similar to the modern fantasy elves.  I have some of them from a class I took in college...I'll have to see if I can find them and post titles.  They're very interesting.

If most of the elves have left, that would be very sad.

Yes, I've always thought Santa's elfs are a different "breed" (for lack of a better term) from the elvin kindred.

And Calith, we faeries are always lurking around, it's you elves who have been rather quiet lately! ;)

Come out, come out, my friends!
