Thanks. Who else has some pictures for us? I saw a lot of cameras this weekend!

Here's one more. A Panographic shot of the Queen's court and few of our fellow RFer's.

Yep, though I won't be in garb until later in the season (my brother-in-law starts on my kilt next week).  Heck, I spent half the time keeping my camera in my backpack due to the weather, and the fact that I didn't bring any rain gear for it.

If you saw a guy in shorts and a black tank top with a Led Zep tattoo on his upper left arm trying to shoot from cover of the rain, that was me!

Sealclubber, I don't know how many times I heard you yelling that on Sunday...

Xanthenes, I don't remember seeing anyone with that description. If you see a balding guy with a beard and camera at the fest it's probably me. We stop by Things From Rings on every lap of the grounds. I'll admit I was pretty tired by the end of the day on Sunday too. I found a lot of places to park myself and rest. I'll keep an eye out for you next weekend. I'm pretty sure we'll be there. I was also looking for Cyron but he was a no show.

I'll definitely give Things From Rings a look whenever I pass by.  Still trying to figure out if I'm going next Sunday or will just wait until the Labor Day MiRF camping trip.  I have a potential gig shooting at the U.S. Open in New York on Labor Day weekend, which would kill the camping trip, which would in turn necessitate hitting the grounds next Sunday.  Hoping to find out this week.

Also, does anyone know if MiRF has any photo/video gear limitations?  Typically, I just wander around with my backpack and Canon and shoot stills, but at some point this season, I'd like to run out with my Canon 5D Mark II fully loaded with my video gear (9" HD monitor mounted on top, audio processor on the bottom, boom mic, Vinten tripod).  A call to the organizers may be in order, as I don't want to scare the hell out of anyone by dragging all that crap around.

It's fun to see little kids enjoying the festivals.

The kid below has a new hero now. You should have seen him during the show. If my heart raced like his did I'd have a heart attack for sure!

Actually Pipere I thought you looked as if you were laughing and they took the pic in mid-laugh, so it's not a bad shot. As for the old comments about the Vulgarians looking totally Goth. I think your's and the lord's standing next to you garb is very cool. That burgundy and black is very rich looking. The Fops missing his signature hat, you all know which one I'm talking about right? And that little kid reminds me of how I felt meeting these people at his age. And even now when I dress in my garb and meet children and their parents and others I feel I'm sharing the same experience over and over again and helping people enjoy history and heritage a little more.

Very cool, too bad Michigan or the nation doesn't have a matchlock/wheellock shooting demonstration group. They recently did a show on the history channel, I believe it was Warriors, and they covered the samurai and they showed how they even used matchlock. So there are groups out there doing those sort of demonstartions their just hard to find or very expensive to book.

snipe - "Muzzle fire is cool!!" - So is cannon fire - join us when we sent up another black powder  certification training session - yes a few of the Brethren are certified (not insane yet) via the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. We hope to help arrange a class in February or March of 2010 but limited attendance.

As for a demo group - we have them - they are that good and they are booked solid much of the time. Bristol also has them as well but they can be indeed a bit pricey.

Thank you kindly, Lady Ann.  The second weekend of September is being to shape up as a possibility.  And I do think I'll be able to make it on Festival Friday.  Went to Festival Friday last year for the first time and it was a great day to leisurely shop without the typical weekend crowds.  Additionally, according the the Mich RenFest site, admission is only $10 for Festival Friday.  Hard to pass that up!

Oh man, I missed Duchess Lucrezia! I always try to get a few shots of her. She makes some of the best dresses...

Good shots too. The lighting looked good. I shot the 4:30 show while you were at Tea. The lighting was much more harsh. I'm not very happy with most of my shots.

I messed up my back doing some truck jumping in Canada last year and it has up times and down times.  Recently, it's gone into "down times" mode.  My neurosurgeon acknowledges that there's a lot of damage, but doesn't think I'm a good candidate for surgery.  Since I've run through a gamut of physical therapy, chiropractic, and non-invasive surgical procedures, it's not really what I wanted to hear.   :)

I figured as much, I was just commenting on his face. He looks like a strong warrior. Whom ever took the pics of the knights in armor. Really good job, I'm surprised how detailed the reflections in the armor are. What lighting effect did you use.

Thanks!  Regular old level and curves.  Then, a lot of tonal contrast, hitting shadows hardest, then midtones, then highlights.  After a few passes of that, plus some spot saturation boosting, I combined the contrast-adjusted layers and then brushed the background away to its original state (too much of that technique tends to ruin the bokeh behind the subject).  Ran a polarizer filter over the background layer (the shot was taken with a polarizer over the lens, but i wanted a little more) and did a little spot saturation to get the blue I wanted.  Merged, sharpened, baked at 350 for about an hour.   :)

Yeah, and I have a two Tiffen packs full of filters I really don't use anymore.  All sorts of warm mist, black pro mist, the whole wedding/portrait pack.  I just do all that in Photoshop.  One too many times shooting with a warm mist and then realizing I wanted more detail.  It's easy to get it in Photoshop, but really hard to get rid of a filter effect when you realize you don't want it.

The only filter I really use full-time, at least outdoors, is a polarizer.  Lose too much sky and Photoshop isn't going to get it back.

I concur, the only filter I use is a skylight1b for protection on my smaller glass, the Bigma goes unprotected (petal hood seems to be sufficient).

I've run into a problem I haven't had in a long time, since my days shooting full frame 35mm film.  On my Canon 5D Mk II, my Tiffen screw-on filters slightly vignette my 20-35mm L when wide open at 20mm.  Never thought I'd find a real downside to a full frame sensor, but alas I found it.  Going to try a 72 to 77 step-up and try some of my 77mm filters to see if that kills it.

Other than that, I'd love to complain about the camera, but I can't.  I'd sleep with it if my wife would let me.

I cannot believe that no one has posted a picture of me as Pirate Scooby.

I conceived the outfit to fit all three of the weekend themes, 2 official, one not.

It was Buccaneer Beer-fest, (the pirate part)
It was pet weekend, (the scooby doo part)
It was so very wrong (the day of wrong part)

I honestly think I have flash bulb burn on my face from all the pics I posed for, and my co-workers are dying to see the get-up.  If anyone has one, please post...Thanks in advance.

From Wine & Alchemy (who, along with Tartanic, are my two favorite acts at RenFest).  His left hand blew out a bit (I'll just go ahead and blame the camera for that), but I still kinda dig the shot.

Ah blame that last one on the sun. I can't believe they even agreed to play there, it's so hot. But, I sat there and gave a listen and they are great. I even bought both of their cds. I like pirate Scooby very imaginitive, and the steam punk outfits very cool.

That outfit got quite warm toward the end of the day.  I ended up looking like some kind of 2 headed monster after removing Scooby's head from my own and setting it on my shoulder (as it is attached to the suit).  It was a riot seeing the look on everyone's face that saw me, especially those that know me and the wee ones.  The Dutchman couldn't even look at me without shaking his head.   Fun fun fun!!!

How's this for a sexy hair-do? I don't know this guys name but I got the shot on Friday while he was checking out the new look. Then Saturday I realized he was from a hat shop my kids love (home of the giant furry hats).

This might be my favorite shot of the day, from today...

Ray has some awesome birds of prey. He also has an excellent show.

Very nice, Jon!  I rattled off I don't know how many shots trying to get one like this on Friday.  Never happened.

Thanks. That shot is the best of of 121 pictures I took at Ray's show. Some just didn't turn out at all. Like a bunch where I focused on the background instead of the bird. But I think that one is the best. I'll put a few more up later but they won't be as cool as this one.

I really liked this guys outfit/look. The picture could have been better but hey...

Here's the caption I posted with the shot on my PBase site:

This isn't a very good shot but it was the best I could get as I tried to shoot between people passing by. This guys outfit was absolutely killer. His facial features were perfect and the first thing I thought of when I saw him in the crowd was "Black Peter!". Black Pete or Zwarte Piet in Dutch is kind of like the anti Santa of the European culture. He was the one who handed out the coal to bad kids and came onto the scene in the mid 14th century and seems to have survived into the mid 19th century. Do a Google search on him... At any rate, I searched the faire grounds for him the rest of the day but never got a good shot of him.

Thanks for the info Gypsyqueenie. Too bad he's not a regular at MIRF anymore. He looked pretty cool. To get that shot of him I had to climb up a rock and jump over to a stump. I think I shot 4 or 5 frames before I could get this one which was almost clear of people in the crowd. I'm sure I looked like an idiot the whole time.  ;) Our daughters thought he looked pretty cool too. If you think he would want a slightly out of focus shot of himself, feel free to pass it along to him.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone on this board happened to be the same guy who took my sister and I's photo at the faire on Sat. 9-12? I was wearing a green and gold tudor type gown and my sister was wearing a reddish mroe elizabethan gown with a riding hat. whoever it was stopped us and asked to take our photo with a pro looking camera. anywho, just curious where it ended up, would like a copy if I can find it :). thanks!

Oh and I guess I should introduce myself eh? lol. name is Rachel, hail from the thumb area. been going to MIRF for a few years now. this was the first year we decided to go in garb. I have to say it was a blast! I wish I would have done it sooner! so yeah, guess that's about it, hello all!

Hello and welcome LadyRachel.  Going in garb is so much more fun that in mundanes.  My wife and I have been doing it for years and it's great fun.  You can lose yourself in your character and have some fun that you'd be slapped for in street clothes.  What happens at Faire stays at Faire (unless it ends up on here or You Tube or Facebook or.... ;D)

I'll look through my shots but I usually shoot first then hand out a business card with a web address on it so you can find your pictures later. Did the photographer have a beard?, bald?, in garb? wearing a hat?

Nope, no buisness card. hmmmm, trying to remember what he looked like. I know he was not a big guy, on the slender side. might have been in garb, but it was hard to tell if it was acctually gard or just casual clothes. he was nealing down most of the time he took our pic., and then he just kinda said thanks and walked off, so i didnt really get a good look or act quick enough to ask where they were going to end up. I don't think he was wearing a hat, can't remember if he was bald, i don't think so tho. Had a pretty nice camera, it was quite large and fancy, sorry I don't know a thing about cameras, other than I can tell when ones a pro one, lol. that's about all I can remember  :-\

You lost me at slender.   :)

I don't know if it's possible, but your best bet might be to get back for one of the last two weekends and hit Rings n Things at around 11am.  There are usually a few of us geeks with cameras hanging out at that point.  If you don't recognize anyone, I'm sure one of us would love to take another one.

Thanks for all the help everyone! I kinda figured it would be a long shot trying to find this one person out of a zillion faire go'ers. Not sure if we will get back again this season or not, funds are running a lil low (have aready been there twice, once not in garb) but definatly next year! So I might just be taking you up on that offer then, the pictures all you guys have taken and posted on here are amazing! :)

LadyRachel, I'm pretty sure it wasn't me either. We were at the faire on the 12th. I'm not the thinnest fellow these days either so that pretty much rules me out.  ;)

If you do get back to the faire this year follow Xanthenes suggestion and stop by the Things From Rings booth around 11:00 AM. Pretty much on any given day you'll find several people ready to take your picture. And if the shooters know who you are and what you look like, you'll probably get a few really nice candid shots of yourself afterward.

I was there on the 12th, though I don't think my garb could be mistaken for casual, plus I carry a bow and quiver.  However, I still search through the photos I took that day to be sure I didn't get a shot of the two of you.

You may want to check Flickr.com  There are several that post Ren Fest photos there that I don't believe belong to this group.  Do a search for Michigan Renaissance Festival then sort by date.  You may stumble across the photo.

I guess PBase isn't back to normal... It's doing strange stuff. I did get one shot uploaded though.

Let me set this shot up. We were taking a break in the alley/street sitting on the steps of the castle (next to the Guinness Pub). The queen was walking by with her court and set herself up so I could get a couple of shots. She stopped for a minute and used some cool bubble makers to well, make some bubbles. As she continued to walk past I thought I'd try to get a shot of the bubble before it hit the ground and popped. You know, just for fun. Well, I got a few shots but the one below turned out really really nice. I should also note that this is a crazy tight crop of the original shot. What I mean is, the picture you see below is only about 10% of the original shot... Anyway, the back of the queens head is on the left, out of focus. But if you look closely at the bubble you can see the queen (in focus), some of her court, the castle, the sun and all sorts of stuff, twice. The top half of the bubble shows things right side up and the bottom half of the bubble shows things upside down.

Yea glad I got mine out - brrr - the year after they left the fest it got cold - for the longest time it was always too warm to generate much sales so I understood but the last couple of years they would've made a killing. They are still online though so if you plan ahead you can get it for next year's chilliness

I lucked out/unfortunatley got mine(Half Moon Coat) through a garage sale. The guy was really into fest and had recently passed away and his brother was selling his stuff. And my brother had found the sale and he was there so he bought the coat for me. So it goes to show those coats/cloaks are quite popular and durable. Unfortunately, the guy had passed , so no more fest for him, but I figured by wearing the same coat. His memory lives on. Karma is good.

Kate picked up hers at Maryland Ren Faire last year, they have a booth there.

I love mine as well. Got it back in '07 at MnRF during our very soggy and chilly visit. It was and still is a very good investment. I wore it all winter that year with a windproof vest and stayed quite warm and dry.

Can you post some pictures of your cloaks for us? Maybe we can start a "Cloak" thread too?

Jon.

As long as it doesn't draw too much attention from my upcoming "Girls of RenFair" thread!   :)

Girls of RenFair? Ya, forget the cloaks. I like the girls idea much better!  ;)

I'll be looking forward to that thread as well.

I am very happily married, but that doesn't make me blind... a little window shopping never hurt anyone.

Thinking that it would actually make a nice photo thread, I threw it in the Faire Photos forum...though I did chicken out a bit on the name.

"Ladies of RenFaire" may make for a little less hate mail than "Renaissance Girls Gone Wild".   :)

When I check the traffic on my picture sites (PBase is the big one) all the pictures of "women" get so many hits it's crazy. Seriously, regardless if it's even a good picture or not they get hits like you would never believe. Sometimes the ratios are 100 to 1 one or higher. If I wanted to pull traffic into my sites all I would need is pictures of women. It's strange...

Ok, so I'm a bit slow... I still have far too many pictures from MIRF to process. But here's one I just finished... Actually, here's two versions of it. I don't know which one I like better.

Oh ya, if anyone knows the names of people I have posted in my picture site feel free to leave a comment with their name/stage name so I can update the pictures.

Nice shot of me Jon, Thanks.  I like the candid, non-posing shots of people doing what they do at faire.  With the leaves in my hat, it was obviously last weekend (my wife bought a new fur hat, so I stole her leaves she was wearing and stuck them in mine) .  I believe I was either in the act of loaning my umbrella to a lady trying to eat, or retrieving said umbrella after she was done during one of the many showers that day.  Chivalry isn't totally dead, even among pirates!!
