Title: POLL: Personal Forum Storefronts for Seamstresses!
Post by: DeadBishop on August 06, 2009, 12:53:04 PM
This is something I've been trying to figure out since we moved to the new forum.  If, for a small fee, would you as a seamstress/crafter like to have your own personal storefront here on R/F.com to sell your wares from?

This would give you the opportunity to sell your items in a localized spot, without competing with others.  Those of you who already have a dedicated website could use this as a platform for driving traffic to your site and gaining exposure, and those of you who don't have a dedicated website....well, now you would!  This storefront would be entirely dedicated to you and your wares.  Your own virtual booth at faire here on R/F.com!

Any questions you have, please ask.  I'd like to hear as much feedback as possible to see what everyone thinks!

Since I can't resew a button without screwing it up, I won't reply to the poll. But as a potential purchaser, I say, please yes!

Monthly fee? one time fee?

I think it's a good ideal.

I didn't vote (yet) but I think it could be a great option to pursue. My wife would be able to do a lot with something like this. I just need to talk her into doing it!

Since I LOVE to create and sew historical clothing but rarely have the time to go to Faire and wear any, I would love to have someplace where the people who become familiar with my name (through the forums) can have a chance to view what I would like to sell.  It's rather impersonal on eBay - this would be ideal!

I won't vote since I don't intend to have a store front, but I'd say YES PLEASE! for those who do.

A wonderful, convenient place to find qualified, trustworthy merchants online sounds like a winner to me.

I don't have enough time to sew for more than myself and a couple friends, but if I did this would be an opportunity I would jump at. Definitely a great idea!

I am honored and humbled to be able to serve many of the members of this community with designing and making garb. I would be interested in supporting such a project.

I think this is a great idea. I am thinking of starting my own website to sell historical clothing to others this year, and I'm sure that exposure on here would definitely help.

I would rather pay a fee to those I "know" than those I don't.

All considering, its doubtfull I'd be selling anything, but I say its a wonderful idea. I do think it shoudl, be its own area in Fair Garb, or by the Buy-Trade-Sell, and not part of the general sewing discusion area, just for ease of access to posts. Thats my two bits on the matter.

While I probably wouldn't work for those of you Over There who regularly attend fair, I think it's an excellent idea.  It would also allow me to let folk drifting in from Over Here know I'm about...   :D

I don't have a shop, but it sure would be nice if the shopkeeps had a place on here with their wares!

It looks like this is something we'll be moving forward with then here on the forum!  What I'd like is that anyone interested in having their own personal sub-forum, please PM me and we'll discuss the details.

Thanks everyone!

Will it be possible for us to set up storefronts at a later date, as well? I'm definitely interested, but until I get my own sewing machine in Dec, I don't think I'll have time to make for people besides myself and my friends.

Yes, of course!  This is not a one time offer.  However, I will be offering a special rate to the first members who sign up now to get us started with our new area of the forum!

Personally, I think it's a good idea, but again the question of fee has not been answered either.  I'd really like to know if it would be a monthly, yearly, or one time fee.

I enjoy sewing but right now my time is limited but to be able to set this up and have it ready for later when I do have more time to sew would be awesome.

I have considered making inexpensive starter wench skirts & chemises and also little boy garb for resale as a way to pay for my own and give me an activity other than watching tv to get through winter ... but don't have any way to market them.  Depending on the cost I would definitly consider it.

I would go for it Betty.  Try a site like Etsy for easier marketing.  I'd recommend doing girls sets too.  I run the children's performance troupe at our festival and my parents always have a hard time with kids costuming.

As the mother of a twelve year old girl - I concur!  Making clothes that they can wear for more than one year that do not cost an arm and a leg would rock!

As a home working Leather crafter and seamstress I would LOVE to have a small store front here to sell my pouches and such. I do mostly leather but I can sew ANYTHING! So Let us know what the fees will be and all...I may drop my old website in favour of this! Cat

Let me know if you need any help, anyone, with logos, etc. I'm not sure what you'll be doing to make the storefronts 'pretty' but I'm willing to offer my services for barter. Not here just to advertise, wasn't my first intention at all. But was curious as to how people who likely don't have a lot of experience putting together things like this, once they have their 'space' will be able to do the digital things to them.

I'd be willing to help with this project, in any way that my design/web engineering skills allow. :)

This would be a wonderful resource to be able to link my website and/or pay for space on this site to promote my historical clothing design business.  :)  Most of the historical clothing sites like this are for Victorian or Colonial (18th Century). There is a need for those of us who specialize in Renaissance attire.

As a side note, I highly appreciate that you stress in the rules of this site to "Play Nice." I have found many historical costumers can be hyper-critical of each others' work. It would be wonderful to have a place where those types of personalities are weeded out and we all support each other without snide comments and critiques. There is a market for everyone's work whether it is clothing that is Period Appropriate or just Historically Inspired. My clients are not mundanes who give a fig about the accuracy of print and fabrics, but rather reenactors who understand the necessary monetary investment and appreciate my attention to detail.
