Title: Thank Goodness for Life-Saving Friends
Post by: Lady Renee Buchanan on May 17, 2008, 12:53:51 PM
Well.  My first attempt at sewing went awry.  My friend who was going to teach me to sew so I could make 2 new skirts to take to Rendezvous let me down.  One week before leaving for Tennessee.

And that's where my life-saving girlfriend Jeanne came in.  She is a professional seamstress, though the only Ren garb she has made was for me.  We work together, and this week she stopped by my desk and asked how my plans were for our trip, when I told her what happened.  She said "Come over my house on Friday after work.  I'll make the skirts."

So last night, I went to her house.  I brought all my patterns (yes, I can only sew buttons and a hem, but I buy every Ren pattern whenever Joanne's has a sale).  She looked at them and said "How nice," put them aside, and in 2 hours, she had one skirt completely done except for the hem without using any pattern.  Beautifully pleated so it would lay flat on my waist and not have too much material.

I did one thing to help.  I use the "Welsh Wench" method of tying up my top skirt.  Jeanne used the extra fabric to make the ties (instead of bias tape), and I pulled the ties through right-side out.  She didn't do the hem, because I hadn't washed the fabric yet, so I took the skirt home and will wash it, bring it to work on Monday, and she will measure the hem on me for me to finish.

She is going to wash the other fabric this weekend and make the second skirt to the point of the hem.  And guess what!!!  I learned what a serger is.  It is so cool.  The edges are finished so beautifully.

Yes, my good friend Jeanne (we've been friends for 9 years, though have worked together for one) has saved me!  I will have 2 new skirts for Rendezvous to wear for Escarlata and Leinad's Handfasting.

And. . . She MAY go to the Dubuque Renaissance Festival with us wearing some of my garb.  I'm working on it!

Huzzah to Jeanne!   ;D

Could someone explain the WW Method of skirt hiking?  I think there are some new faces here that would love to know.
