Title: A fantastic faire visit! (Pittsburgh)
Post by: Blushing on August 11, 2009, 01:32:03 PM
A friend and I will be venturing from Colorado (rather complicated when traveling by dragon, I assure you!) to visit your fair shire Sept. 18-21.

Anything that should not be missed?  Things to see before/after faire?  We will have some time Monday before heading back, it looks like.

Anything to keep in mind about the weather?

I'm assuming the Pittsburgh airport is best to fly into, but is there a preferred/easier alternative?

I'm looking forward to this faire adventure, as is my hamster, Corf.   ;D

Thanks and cheers!

The weather here is probably a little warmer than where you are in Colorado. Check weather.com when you are packing. That should give you a good idea of what to expect.

We are looking forward to meeting you :)

Greater Pittsburgh is the airport I would suggest flying into. We have another airport but I don't think it takes much in the way of major carriers.

YEA!
Blushing, I see you all of the time on the Colorado forum. Yeah, I lurk there.  Please find me and say HI!  I'm Queen Margaret, blue gown, shiny thing on head.  Usually complaining to my brother, the King. I want to meet your hamster also.

Thanks!

Hmmm ... looks more humid too.  I've forgotten about humidity!  I'll have to decide closer to the weekend about bringing my cloak ... it's a pain since it's big.

Well, lurking Queen Margaret, I will certainly seek you out.  I hope you're enjoying the Colorado forum!

I'll most likely be coming as a wench, wearing my flowered hat with R/F pin, but I also have incentive to finish my pirate garb.

... and of course I'll be taking photos that weekend!  =)

That's why I love hats ... great for traveling, and great to hide weather-related issues.  ;D

You must visit the pub to meet most of the playtrons.  We tend to end up there.

And as suggested earlier, DO check weather.com for the latest forecast.  We do have humidity, but not every weekend.  Maybe you'll be lucky!

Hamsters!  Huzzah!!!

Corf can find me walking the decks of the Morgan's Bounty...across the glen from the Pirate's Pub.  Oh, and you should come, too  ;)

They tend to start out there, too!  :)

Blushing, it will be great to meet you.  Do be sure to say "Hello."
Are you staying near the airport, near the faire, or somewhere else?  I can suggest plenty of sights worth seeing in Western PA.  It mostly depends on your interests and your convenience.

I hear there will be a new "Hamsters Through the Ages" booth where you can learn of your hamster's ancestry...

Hey Mistress Charlotte! Have a great time! Say hi to my Aunt Judith- who might get to stop by. You will recognize her easily since she always wears a big hat.

Professor M ... I will certainly seek you out!

I'm not sure where we are staying yet, but I do know we have almost all of Monday for SOMETHING before we have to be back at the airport for the return flight.  I've never been in that corner of the country (closest is the Newark airport and that really doesn't count).

So any suggestions will be listened to!  I'd like to see at least soemthing besides the faire ... as wonderulf as the faire is I'm sure!

All right then, here goes:

If I had to recommend only one thing, it would be the Heinz History Center.  It is right in downtown Pittsburgh, near the convention center.  You'll love the drive in, get to see some of the city, and have fun learning about the history of the area.  There are also plenty of nice restaurants nearby.
http://www.heinzhistorycenter.org (http://www.heinzhistorycenter.org)

If you want to see something unusual, and enjoy birds, try the National Aviary.  It is a walk-through zoo specializing in birds, the only free-standing aviary in the country.  I worked there for many years, and I can't recommend it highly enough.
http://www.aviary.org (http://www.aviary.org)

You can also take a cruise down Pittsburgh's rivers.  The Gateway Clipper Fleet operates several cruises, including a few that point out Pittsburgh landmarks.  http://www.gatewayclipper.com (http://www.gatewayclipper.com)

There are a zillion other things I could recommend, too, so I'll just point you to a great website that is run by the Convention and Visitor's Bureau.  http://www.visitpittsburgh.com (http://www.visitpittsburgh.com)

Once again, I'm looking forward to meeting you.

Blushing - another suggestion that might interest you is to visit the city's new Rivers Casino on the North Side.  It just opened one week ago and is receiving positive reviews.  It's 75% non-smoking too!   I've yet to make it there myself...

Thank you all ... I think it will be a fun visit indeed.   ;D  And I will be sure to take plenty of photos to share!

Right now I'm trying to decide if I can possible fit all the necessities for the weekend in a single carry-on suitcase and a backpack.  This could be interesting.

Huzzah Blushing! It will grand to see you and all of our Faire friends in Morelandshire very soon.  I am excited to be able to enjoy the shire this season as Morgans Bounty has sailed on and I and my crew will be free to enjoy things like the JOUST! (when not at the pub of course!)

Just wear your garb through DIA.  Then again boots in security... not to mention Grommits and steele boning.  Well it was a thought!  Let me know if you need hamsters.

Garb through airport security ... that WOULD be an adventure!

So, should I haul my crazy-heavy cloak out for the weekend?  I have a light one, but it is certainly NOT useful amid water.

I'm getting excited ... I need a faire fix!  =)

Blushing, it is to be sunny and 80 all weekend.  It may be a little chilly in the mornings and cool off in the evenings.  I'd leave the heavy cloak at home.

I'm still packing, but that's perfectly normal a few days before a faire adventure.  I've been checking the weather too ... that humidity is a bit scary!

Blushing, I just saw the forecast for this weekend.  Wonderful!  Sunny Saturday, high of 74, very cool in the morning.  Sunday a little cloudy, high of 73, also cool overnight.  The humidity hasn't even been a factor the past couple of days.

So, as you can see, we have ordered up a perfect weekend for your visit.  Aardvark Arthur is waiting to meet you.  Please look me up, blue gown, pearls and shiny thing on head.  Terry is playing the Pirates Pub and is also eager to make your accquaintance.

I actually fit everything into carry-on luggage ... which probably means I've forgotten something ...

I'll be wearing red and blue skirts, and either a gold or white shirt, and a Pendragon green canvas bodice.  And my hat - sporting my R/F pin - which will be worn through the airports.

Here's to a fantastic weekend!

It was such a joy to meet you and Annie!  And CORF and Nameless One, as well :)  Hope to someday make the journey to visit your home faire and spend a bit of time chatting with you again.

Blessings!

Salutations from a rather cold Colorado! We did indeed make it safely back ... although hours of delays certainly didn't help.  And the weather here in Colorado made me wish I was back in Pittsburgh!  (A touch of fall snow, paired with a nonworking home heater was not fun - although it may be funny. ::))

It was a wonderful visit, all of you were delightful and the faire was much fun!  Hopefully someday I'll repeat the adventure.

I am aiming to upload photos at some point this week, and will post when I do - I have a lot to go through!

Hi Blushing,

I saw someone at the Faire on Sunday that looked awfully familiar, but that I couldn't place.  It turns out I recognized you from your avatar.

I've got pics of you from the gate show, Lady Mesmer's, and the pub sing.

Greetings to all of Morelandshire,

Just wanted to drop a quick note to thank all of the cast and crew for their wonderful hospitality to us this past (last) weekend of festival.  It was a pleasure to play with all of you.
