Title: Spam - A Lot!
Post by: Lady Renee Buchanan on November 23, 2009, 05:40:14 AM
It seems the past week or so, there has been more spam than usual.  And it seems that each spammer makes 3 threads.  Not 2, not 4, just 3.

I don't know much about computers, but can someone (evil someone) set up their computer to do that, or is it just a fluke?   ???

Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceedest on to three.

Yep they can. So just use report to mod. Then reply "reported" in the thread so everyone knows that it been reported. That way the mod/admin boxes aren't flooded with reports on the same spam.

Being a new member, i don't know what the flood limit is for this forum (if it is SMF default or higher).  However, as admin of several other forums, we have noticed that (based on post time) the bots typically get nailed by the flood control so they only post in a certain number of threads.

I had one forum where I had intentionally removed all flood control (in the coding), and we would get spam bots in every single thread.

If anyone sees spam on the forum, remember to use the "report to moderator" button.  That will get our attention the fastest to be able to deal with the problem.

I have been taking a look at new member profiles lately, and it seems there is an uncommon number of them that have links attached for obvious "outside sales" sites.  What about those people, who are obviously only here hoping that someone will click on their link, but without any intention of ever participating in the forums at all?
Title: Re: Spam - A Lot!
Post by: Tygrkat on August 15, 2010, 07:38:26 PM
There have been quite a few lately, Rani Zemirah, I've noticed them too  :-\

When I see posts like that, I usually click the "report to moderator" button, then DB and/or John are aware of the spammer and can handle it however they see fit.

We get our fair share trying to register on the McLotofus forums.  Pain in the keester I tell ya!  I hate spam... did I mention I hate spam?!  >:(  ;D
Title: Re: Spam - A Lot!
Post by: Rani Zemirah on August 15, 2010, 07:54:28 PM
Oh, most of the ones I'm talking about never post, they just create a profile with a link to some sales site in the "Website" field of their profile page, so they can get a few cents if anyone clicks on it, but they're not here to actively spam, or to actively participate...

I knew the original King of Spam, or at least his firstborn son, Geordie Hormel.  Geordie got a kick out of useless stuff being called "spam."  It's one of the world's most popular foods, oddly enough.

Especially in Hawaii *grins*

We went to a restaurant there (and did not stay, alas), that served spam with every dish.

*balk*

Anyways, I do have something to add to this. I'm a web designer and do database work, no matter what you'll never get rid of them even if you beef up your procedures. The rule of three you've seen is due to the fact that they do flood and most databases only allow "X" number of responses per "X" time.

It's  a bot, and not a real person normally. Annoying. I know. :(

...and such a good name!!....

I've seen a LOT of names joining the site today that I'd be willing to BET are spammers, positively identifying at least 2 via an anti-spam site I use on a board I administer.

edit...
In the last hour or so, the following have registered: bbethrasmussenh, wlatanyamorsek, & bvancephillipsp and because of the similarities in user name formation, and email eddresses of the first two, I wouldn't trust any of these... They haven't posted yet, but they may just laying-in-wait!

When time permits, I usually scan the new registered members and clear out the spammers before they even have a chance to hit.  Sometimes, like this week, I haven't had a chance to do so, so they get through.

True, Doña Catalina... the administrators! They are good!  If I see something odd, I feel obliged to make note of it for their benefit. Unfortunately, I have experience with the problem, and it does take some help to stay on top of the spammers.

DB, if I am a bother in this area, please PM me and I'll keep quiet!

No bother at all.  I'm glad people report the spam when it pops up, otherwise I might miss the ones that get through.

I just deleted about 400 spam accounts last night.  One of the largest sweeps I've done in quite some time.

May be time for another sweep... I've seen quite a number of spammers registering the the past 3-4 days. I think I'm just a little more aware since I've been handling a bunch on my site the past few days.  I don't envy you this task, but if you ever want help, I'd be happy to pitch in.  I spend more time here than I probably should!  ::)

It's several hundred per day.  I try to keep on top of it, but some days I don't have time to be on the computer.  Tonight it was a little over 600 spam accounts.
Title: Re: Spam - A Lot!

On my site, I'm using extremely aggressive blacklisting, and am blocking most foreign IP addresses. But it's a very regionally focused forum and so far, that hasn't caused problems. Unfortunately, it's not a solution you can take with this forum. My offer to help stands. My job is in front a monitor, which is why I wander out here so frequently...I need period diversions to maintain sanity.

Thanks for keeping this running for all of us! If you come to RenDezvous, I'll buy you an ale...

Unfortunately this forum uses an old version of smf which is a fairly spam prone forum software. Mods you really should upgrade to 2.0 rc4 the new version is much better at spam smashing  plus it has a host of antispam plugins available for free
Title: Re: Spam - A Lot!
Post by: Tom on July 18, 2012, 01:02:30 AM
Actually it's not an old version, 1.1.16 is the current version of the 1.1.x track and will be supported for several years. We do have a fairly good anti-spam system in place but nothing is perfect :-). If we were to go to version 2 (which does have better anti-spam and other features) it would be 2.0.2 and not a release candidate.

;D OK just trying to help. I have been using smf for several years and thought I would throw it out there. I forgot 2.02 is still basically in beta as Iv'e been running it for quite a while. Spam actually forced me to upgrade. I was at my wits end with it and did the upgrade and couldn't have been happier with the results.

I did a search on some of the text in their post.  The search DID turn up the website with no warnings.

It looks to be a startup venture looking for advertisement, and like you say, the "English as a second language" part doesn't help much. There is information about several faires.  If it is a trap, it's an elaborate one. I would recommend caution and a good anti-virus suite.

I'm not sure what system you use for anti-spam.  My username + e-mail got caught in the system.  Special thanks to DeadBishop for getting that worked out.

For my SMF(v2.02) I link to www.stopforumspam.com/ (http://www.stopforumspam.com/)  The site has had 0 issues with actual user registration / spam detection in over a year.   Link to Mod HERE (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1547)

Also, if you don't already use it, you should look at Tiny Portal  ;)

In an effort to control the spam I have added more anti-spam and anti-bot protection. You may notice "challenge" screens when you connect to the forum through services that use a proxy (AOL and Blackberry come to mind). This is because proxy sites are magnets for bots and spammers to connect through so connections from those types of sites require more stringent measures. I apologize for any inconvenience and here's hoping it helps!

Please let me know either through this thread or via PM if this is causing problems.

I've been trying to help by reporting spam when I find it, but there's an 80 second wait time to post reports. It makes it really frustrating. Reporting spam only takes a moment, and if that limit were lifted, I could report probably every spam in a morning within that 80 seconds, and that includes posting the reply that its reported. Is there any way to lift that limit, or does that just invite spam to the mods?
Title: Re: Spam - A Lot!
Post by: Tom on July 21, 2013, 06:57:18 PM
Some of the anti-spam measures may be causing a small number of users issues connecting to the site. If you hear of anyone having problems please let them know they can email me at support-at-renaissancefestival-dot-com and I will do everything I can to get their problems resolved.

Also, I am still tweaking settings trying to find an acceptable balance between protecting the site and keeping it as usable as possible.

Wow, there's a whole sh*t-ton of SPAM going on right now!  I tried to report each thread, but with the 80 second rule, it would take me all day.  Hopefully the right eyes will see this and be able to shut it all down.

WOW!

Moderator took care of that fast while I was sending a report.

Confused me at first, then I realized they got the spammer.

Lots of spam today...
Only got one reported thanks to the 80 second rule (I noted the thread) but it appears to be multiple posters, so there are still unreported threads...

My humble apologies to Quickie Mart!
They had the misfortune to be on the end of that string of spammers and I did not recognize them.
   Thank for catching that!
