alright i know i'm tired of winter and so i've set my sights on April
Spring and the opening of Garf
who's ready for spring and Garf?
ME!!!!!!!! Last year was my first visit to lovely GaRF, and I was only able to go one day! This year I'm hoping for at least two days!
I'm ready too. I performed at GARF for three seasons (the final Fall season in 1999 and the following two spring seasons), then took a long hiatus only to return for about half the season last year. This year I'm working a full season once again. I can't say who I'll be playing yet . . . because I don't know.
This year is our 25th anniversary celebration. It's going to be a doozy. And while I can't really talk about everything that will be going on, I can say that we'll have some special events planned for the season.
I'm estatic i can't wait i know i won't be there every weekend but i will be going atleast twice
I'm soo looking forward to it! I shall see how many times I can convince someone to take me...(yes, I haven't gotten my driver's license yet. Don't want to pay for insurance :p).
ill be there lots *nods*
I'll be there a bunch as well this year. Last year was my first year attending, so I'm really looking forward to it.
Does anyone know if season passes are available? I looked on the website but didn't see anything.
last year was my first year at GARF...my brother lives in Georgia and he and his family go often and I finally haf the opportunity to join them last year...I'm hoping I can make that happen again!
bama i don't know if they have a season pass i don't remember seeing anything about it
Hello GARF Friends!
Sorry for the long hiatus...Lady Christina, I'm ready!! Will be there several weekends with our new baby in tow.
She's 11 weeks today! I'll post a picture when I have more time.
Looking forward to meeting up with you all in Newcastle!!
Bring on the spring weather!
Looking forward to the upcoming season. I'm meeting with some of our newest citizens of fair Newcastle this evening.
alright this time i'm going to remember they always seem to be working on our exit so i'm not going to stop and eat like we did last year. We are eatting on the go. this time i hope to get there before opening gates opening weekend if yall want to meet and greet we can do so.
I'd love to meet and greet, but I'll have to see if we're able to make it there for opening with the wee one in tow this year!
I'm really looking forward to Tartanic! Glad to see the Nickel Shakespeare Girls are back as well!
The number one item on my shopping list this year are fairy wings for my daughter!
Here she is by the way. Her name is Evan Grace.
she's beautiful
She's too cute to keep you from being there, although she might send my fiance into Baby fever and we've got a wedding to get through first.....
Hello BW... We are trying to make plans to visit GARF this year before we hit TNRF. Probably going to be there opening weekend if we come. Any chance we could raise a toast wit you and yours?
i plan to be there opening weekend with atleast two to three friends
Amy, Absolutely, I know we will be there opening weekend and can definitely make plans to gather. Not sure if it will be just me and my fiance or if the rest of our group will be there as well. If it looks like there will be enough of us R/Fers around we can try to organize a little meet and greet Friday evening. Its getting closer but I really wish it would hurry up, i've been going through withdrawals for far to long.
my wife and I plan to be there on opening weekend.
we will be there for opening - hope to see everyone at the gates! With Mead!
no mead for me but i'll be there
Well this news that lots of folks will be there opening weekend is the best I have had all day! That is terrific. I'll try that much harder to organize us making it down for the weekend. If we can't make it by Friday we could syncronize our sun dials to meet up on site one day for a show or pub sing!
Really something to look forward to now!
i'm not going to make it down Friday even though the extra expense might be worth a few more hours of sleep. I'll be there Saturday Morning hopefully before noon. any show in perticular that you would like to meet at and what time?
I can't wait for GaRF!! :D
I'll be working with Son of Sandlar this year! :) So y'all'll (is that even a declination of y'all?) have to come and see me!
Anybody know of anywhere to get a good, albeit cheap bodice (other than ebay)? One of the bonings in my good (read:only) bodice came out, and I haven't had the chance to send it to get it mended (nor do i have the money to send it either). So, I'd greatly appreciate any leads. I've found one I like for 60 bucks, but I'm not quite sure if it'll look okay on me.
We're planning on being there opening day! Looking forward to seeing everyone! Congrats on the new gig, fairieimp!
Have you looked at the royal coffers store on ebay? I got my first set of garb from her and was really happy with it.

It's official, my doppleganger Edmund Vainglory III, Lord Admiral to his majesty's Navy, shall be attending their majesties this season. If you see him wandering about, do make sure to say good day.

Sir Edmund:
Dost thou have an R/F pin, if so display it prominently so that we may see it.
The BLAKDUKE
Susannah- She is beautiful! ;) Can't wait to meet her!
As for season passes, I think GARF is the last faire that's open more than 4 weekends that doesn't offer a season pass. :/ Perhaps the management should consider this...
Not sure when I'll be in attendance, but opening weekend looks like it might be ok. :)

The BLAKDUKE
Pins have yet to be distributed. Traditionally, we receive them upon the final rehearsal. I'll be wearing mine own 'pon a piece of cloth draped fashionably o'er my belt. I do so cringe at the thought of piercing my doublet.
I do have the pin from last season, but that hardly counts does it? And during the 99 to 01 seasons, when first I greeted visitors to Newcastle, we did not have pins. Our names were recorded in a lovely broadside distributed at front gate. But alas, those days are long since gone.
At any rate, all who wish to see me can do so at the King's coronation anniversary celebration each day at 1:30 at the King's Hall Stage. I shall be there to present a wondrous speech to his majesty.
Jonathan, he's talking about a renaissancefestival.com pin, not a cast pin. ;)
Well paint my nose and call me Susan, I completely misinterpreted. And I believe I ALSO answered the question. ;)
I wonder if anyone has a pin(were they even made back then) from 1986. I believe that was the innaugural year and the first year I attended. If there are none to be had, I wonder how one could be made.
This does mark the 25th anniversary of the Georgia Renaissance Festival. Willynilly On The Wash is just a glimmer of a memory now.
Anyone know how far GARF is from the Atlanta Airport? - Mapquest says 17 mins but, I have no idea about traffic - Thanks
I'd give yourself 30 mins. Last year there was a lot of construction and it took hours for some folks.
warrior monk is right if they are working on that exit(which it seems like they always are) it will take longer. but yeah it's really just a stone throw from the airport or so it seems to me
I'll very likely be there for opening day, unless the forecast calls for rain of course.
Though, as much as I like being there on opening day, last year was a nightmare. I tried to arrive by about 11:45-ish, but due to the insane craaawwlll of traffic that last mile or so in Fairburn, I didn't get in the gates til an hour later. Ugh.
Getting there any earlier means no sleep for me 't'all, since I work at night...
Thanks, Lady D!! Looking forward to seeing you again this year! Jon...I do believe I have an excellent picture of you from last season...I have in my GARF 2009 album on facebook and will try to post here with some others soon!
Also...I meant to start a countdown!! We're one month out as of yesterday, lords and ladies!

thanks for the lead. :) i've looked today, and unfortunately most of those are out of my price range; however, if i save up, i might be able to get one for next year (there are *several* that i really like).
i bid on a pretty nice 2 piece couture set that apparently doesn't have a reserve on ebay, so maybe i'll get it. i'm not sure how it'll fit it with my garb though... i may have to by a new chemise (luckily those aren't anywhere near as expensive as a bodice). we'll see how it goes.
ugh - why are they not going to do season passes this year?

No problem. But, yeah, Etsy is much like eBay or thrift store shopping: it's worth it to check back every few days if you're looking for something in particular and/or a good deal.
No interest in a Moresca bodice or one from Royal Family Clothiers?
Siege The Day will of course be there! Look for me and my employee Crystal near the Maze in our new Underhill tent...its forest green, burgundy, and yellow...and if you are too distracted to notice it, you'll probably notice the marshmallow beening you off the forehead as you walk by...lol! My beautiful wife Patti will also be there as Mother Goose, so look for her as you first walk in!
Kev
To my knowledge, GARF has never offered season passes. It certianly hasn't since my family and I started working/playing there (early '90's).
I probably won't be there for opening weekend, but definitely should be for the second half of the season or so.
I can't wait for GARF! I'll be going at least twice this year, both times in May.
uhhhh i nearly forgot catapult practice duhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!
must get marshellows and work on aiming at hot guys dressed in garb
thanks for reminding me scotsquatch
LOVE Seige the Day!! It's hard to miss those flying marshmallows....so much fun!! I love people's faces when they get hit but have no idea what just hit them or where it came from!! And Scotsquatch...you always have the most delightful smile on your face! Looking forward to seeing you there!

I've looked at Moresca's prices online, and they're still out of my range (although there are SEVERAL that i really would enjoy having). :/ I looked at Royal Family last year, and I didn't quite like their styles, although I *do* love their chemises (i own two of them and will be getting two more this year :) ).

Nothing like hearing "Marshmallow Attack!" and you walking by w/mouth open expecting a mini marshmallow and getting pelted by a PEEP! :P
I love my little catapult! I use it on my little brother! :D
i haven't tried it yet but i think mine could launch an m&m too
Oh it can! Just be careful because those can put an eye out!
faye have you been putting eyes out with m&m's and your catapult?
We just found out that my daugher has to compete in the State High School Culinary Arts competition on the 17th! The event has been moved twice and wouldn't you know it falls now on the one weekend we plan to travel, and already have reservations... So... We don't want to waste the opportunity or the hotel room so we will be blowing through like a hurricane trying to see every inch of the faire in one day, Sunday the 18th. Please be sure to say hello and push us in the direction of all the great sights! Also make sure you drag us along to the best spots for pub sing etc!
amy!!! the frenchies from our faire( origionally Fishers) will be there that weekend! look for them in green!
I will be there the next saturday... ill miss you! :( anyone else from TN????
I will be at TNRF in noble garb on may 2nd!
I may try to make it this year. Found out it's in the same town as my mom's high school best friend. So it's not like I wouldn't have anywhere to stay lol!
And no, no eyes have been put out by m&m's being catapulted but it's come close. >.<;
Looking forward to seeing you TN folk this season! Keep an eye out for me...I'll have my wee one (she'll be 4 months old) with me and my husband! We love to hang out at the Brewer's Pub when we're not roaming around. Pub Sing is great...at the Brewer's Pub as well!!
WATCH OUT FOR THOSE PEEPS!!! ;D
Instead of a catapault it's a Peepapault! :) I crack myself up!
I just had to update: 3 MORE WEEKS!!! :D that's 21 days!!!!! (for those of you who like days better!!)
My boyfriend is gonna be working with me at Sandlar, so come by and say "hi" to us both! (which means i get 8 wonderful weeks with him, and if everything goes well, he won't be going back to NJ! :D)
I got my new bodice last week (it's a brand new 200$ couture 2 piece set that i paid 43$ for!)! :D So yeah, everything is going pretty well for me. :) (now if i could just get a solid good paying job....)
I hope things are going just as well for the rest of you! :)
yeaaaaaa 21 days i'm fairly dancing around my computer guess i should drag out the garb and give it the once over this week
I don't post very often so I don't know a lot of people here, but I'll be there at opening gate on the 17th! Not sure if I'm going on the 18th, too but my friends and I are going to at least be there that Saturday.
Very excited!!
I'll keep my eye out for you, BazookaBaby. Opening day is always very exciting!

I should be at GARF on May 16th & 22nd. Wish I could come more, but lots of obstacles like money, and Atlanta traffic get in the way for me.
Looking like I'll be making it opening weekend! Huzzah! I can go and play at the Moresca and Sandlar booths *drool*
I certainly hope some of you lovely ladies will join us near the Royal Pavilion at 4:15 for courtly dancing. I shall be leading some of the dances and I would be heartbroken if I had to sit them out due to lack of a partner.
i may have caught the tell end of this last year it was fun to see but i would love to join in
well, poo! cap'n faye! i'll miss you by a week!
jon, can any ladies join in? how hard are they to pick up? i love doing civil war dances, so maybe?? look for a noble in gold and red on april 24th.

I'll see you at Sandlar then!
I will be returning opening weekend, primarily to vex Warrior Monk and substantiate that last year's confession still holds. Saturday I shall be accompanied by my mysterious traveling companion and Sunday perhaps with M'Lord and our twin Celtic Barbarians. We look forward to fellowship and frivolity and if you are inclined to consult the runes, please seek me out. Huzzah!
Huzzahhhh and this year be on the look out for my new hat
We are working on new favors for opening weekend. We want everyone to remember we made it to GARF! I can't wait to meet you all. I'll have my pin on front and cernter and you can't miss my Sarah. Please flag us down! Remember we will only be there on Sunday the 18th.
Watch for this girl! but with a new Purple hat and cape!

Vex.......a sure sign of witchery or possession to be sure. I will be in the role of escorting regal female pilgrims for the weekend. One has flown in from as far away as California.......and has the skills to help with sewing of garb.
I am certainly looking forward to this year. I will have my better half and several less than active forum members ( friends that I told to join, who never log on) with me, although if they are the typically slow group we have I will be leaving them at the house so that I can meet up with y'all before opening cannon. Definately excited to meet all of you that I don't know and it will be great to see those of you that I've met before.
WhoooooHooo!!! Its almost here......
i look forward to it as well. i will be escorted via knight B and knight D
Only two more weeks...

OH!!! 14 MORE DAYS!!! :D So very excited! :D :D :D :D :D /jumps for joy
yeaahhhhh ready for this weekend i have much to do to prepare for mideval times this sunday and then Garf the saturday after that. Yeaaahhhhhh
now the debate for Sunday is Hoop or no hoop
I would suggest no hoop for Medieval Times. That place is usually SO crowded, then you sit pretty close to one another, and the hoop may annoy your servers as well.
thanks for the info Tammy ok no hoop Sunday not sure how crowded the car will be either going down there so yeah no hoop
You're welcome! Medieval Times is my favorite restaurant!!! Hope you have a magical evening!
as musch as i'd like to crusade in garf, i can't let myself let go of my pirate just yet
alright we shall look for Pirate Jesse opening weekend and not templar Jesse
heads up yall this is advanced notice wish i had known about this site last year but from the looks of it they will be working on exit 61 again opening weekend so don't forget to account for that in your travel time
As a side note to the construction, last year it was much easier to come in from the north side of the faire on most days if the traffic had already picked up.
'K.
So it's looking a bit more an' more like I'll not be there opening day. But if not, then certainly Sunday.
Being that I'm too lazy to check back into the thread...did Blakduke ever check in on coming opening weekend? I really enjoyed chatting with him in particular last year and was sorry I didn't hang out with him more, so I was hoping to see him again.
Can we get a quick 'sound off' for attendance Sat. and/or Sun. from everybody so far?
I've created a new Roll Call post so we can get everything on one page.
I'll update it as everyone posts their info.

Ya know? Isn't this the FIFTH year in a row that there has been road construction right at our exit? Talk about milking a project! Our tax dollars at work.
Kev
Eric....I have it on 2nd hand intelligence that Blakduke will be there Saturday, not sure about Sunday.
Any suggestions for getting around the construction traffic, we're coming from our in-laws in N. GA (Cumming) ???
and Lady Christina, please describe the hat I'm looking for this year. :) :D
alright here is the new hat to look for FF
http://www.renaissancefestival.com/forums/index.php?topic=11033.0
as for the construction traffic my only suggestion is leaving early
it's a bit of a drive for us so i'm making us leave at 7 am we are stopping to get breakfast and gettting back on the road we aren't eating inside like we did last year that was my mistake we stopped and ate inside mcd's that cost us time and put us in the middle of the ugly traffic and missed the meet and greet so no eatting inside for us
The construction isn't quite as awful as it was last season (thank the heavens). The Fairburn e (Exit 61 off of 85 South) still has traffic barrels around it, but not as intrusive as in years past. If you're coming from the north, you can follow these directions which may (or may not) shave some time off your trip (I got this from Google Maps by dragging the route up north one exit on 85):
Heading south on 85
Take exit 64, Union City/Jonesboro.
Right on Oakley/Jonesboro Rd.
Drive about 2 miles.
Turn left at NW Broad Street.
Drive 2 more miles.
Take the GA-74 exit on the right (it's a little cloverleaf loop)
Turn left on GA-74 North/Virlyn B. Smith Rd.
The festival is about 1.2 miles up the road on the right.
Here's the link to the directions (using generic Atlanta, GA as the origin point).
http://bit.ly/b6EZO0
Hope that helps!
thanks for the tip Jon that might be a option
If the traffic is bad I recommend a slight variation on this route which will bring you in from the north side of the faire.
Changes are in italics:
Heading south on 85
Take exit 64, Union City/Jonesboro.
Right on Oakley/Jonesboro Rd.
Drive about 2 miles.
Turn left at NW Broad St 1.0 mi
Turn right at W Campbellton St 0.2 mi
Slight left at Rivertown Rd 2.0 mi
Turn left at Virlyn B Smith Rd
Destination will be on the left 0.6 m
I used this route multiple times last year and it was surprisingly easy to get turned in to the parking area. It also saved nearly an hour of sitting in traffic, which was a definite plus.
next Saturday begins Garf wooooooooooo
ummm im coming from birmingham??????will i have a problem with traffic
Just your normal weekend Birmingham traffic! Take I-20 in and its a breeze, especially on the weekend.
Exit traffic for the faire has been horrendous lately in the past years, but maybe they are almost finished with this milked out project.
If I were king, roadwork would be finished mile by mile BEFORE they messed with other roads.
Kev
thanks alot, are you from bama?
This is an oddly specific question, but mayhap someone has a more solid memory than I for this...
Last year was the first time I'd been on Opening Day itself for at least six years, and I was shocked at the traffic the last couple of miles. For those years previous, I'd been on the first Sun., but not Opening Day (Sat.).
'K. The reason I was shocked, even though I'd been on opening Sun., was that I swear I recalled opening Sun. traffic being very much the same as any other given day for the rest of the season.
Am I remembering that correctly? Am I mad?
It really seemed like the last number of years, the first Sun. traffic was the same as traffic on, say, a Sat. about three or four weeks in.
Am I looking back with rose-colored glasses...or...or what? Anyone recall/know?
Quote from: Templar Jesse on April 11, 2010, 01:01:42 AM
thanks alot, are you from bama?
Nope, but we drove through there at rush hour Friday, and because of the bypass it was quick and easy to get through. Once you are on I-20 the traffic headed towards Atlanta was quick and painless, even at 5:30pm on a weekday. I'm sure the traffic flow on the weekend will be even better!
I have yet to see what the traffic at the exit will be. We'll be arriving there today to check in and start setting up!
Kev
Gramercy Jon & BamaWoodsman for the travel tips.
I know the weather is certainly subject to change but the 10 day looks beautiful!
If the weather next weekend is half as nice as was around here this weekend it will be a great day at Faire.
The weather could not have been better this past weekend, and the nobility in their finery are looking pretty snazzy if I may say so. Currently, the weather forecast for opening weekend has us at partly cloudy and a high of around 80 for both days. It'll be warm, but not stifling.
Sundays in general tend to have less traffic than Saturdays. Opening day is always busy, but last year was particularly packed. It wasn't unusual for visitors to have an hour-long (or longer) wait to exit off 85 and drive the 2 miles to the festival parking lot after 10:00 a.m. or so. The two factors that contributed to the wait were the road work on 85 and the bottleneck of getting into the parking lot.
If you plan to be there for the opening gate ceremony, try to arrive just before 10:15. That's when the musicians will come out to perform and some of us will also emerge to greet our guests (including yours truly). At 10:30 we open the gates. Not only will you get to be a part of the first moments of the festival, you'll also avoid most of the traffic. By 11 a.m., there's usually a wait to turn into the festival parking lot (sometimes a significant wait).
If you haven't already planned out your entire day, here are some things you may wish to see:
At 1:30 at King's Hall Stage we'll have the re-coronation ceremony for Henry the Eighth, by the Grace of God, king of England and France, Defender of the Faith and Lord of Ireland. He's quite excited about it.
We have Tartanic performing four times a day. This is the first time they have visited us and we are very happy to have them.
If you have a little one who is eager to become a Knight or Princess of the Realm, bring them to Fool's Knoll Stage at 3:30. Their majesties will oversee a ceremony that will officially recognize their noble status.
Other fun acts include Barely Balanced, Breaking Point, and Jayna Lee's Aerial Acrobatics. Plus we have the fan favorites of Ded Bob and the Tortuga Twins among others.
Oh, and two of the knights from the jousting field have a show called Max and Mauldron, a Knight at the Opera. I am very curious to see what this show is about. VERY curious. They have two shows at the Garden Cottage Stage.
And of course, we welcome all visiting nobles to come join us for courtly dancing at 4:15 by the Royal Pavilion. I'll be quite disappointed if I go an entire season without some lovely person stealing me away during Hole in the Wall.
I genuinely look forward to all of you coming to the festival. And please, please, please, if you see me say hello.
alright i will be on the lookout for everyone if i miss ya sorry i think i passed beeboy last year and didn't know it until later i found faireimp and Dallen but those where the only ones i think i found as for my entourage it might not be much of an entourage B&D may be canceling on me. :-[ but thats ok i'm going with or without them.
I'm excited but im a little disapointed in the price.... it just doesnt include anyhting, and im driving for 3 hours to get there.....
Jesse bring a friend opening weekend is purchase one ticket get a second free
As a side note, Jesse, or anyone else. I have 7 people in our group coming this weekend so if anyone has an extra person who needs to share a ticket with someone that would be great.
I assume they will do the tickets like they did last year, where 1 ticket gets 2 people in to the Faire. This messed us up last year because we thought it would be a two day pass. Just an FYI for everyone.
hey Bama as it seems my numbers are shrinking I'm not sure if it's gonna be just me or if it's gonna be three of us going but either way your extra person is welcome to share with me
i htought it was buy 2 get one free, or is it buy one get one free????????
it's buy one get one opening weekend
i just ran over to the web site
We usually buy the family pack...4 tickets gets us in for 2 days and food/drink/game tickets. We don't use the costume rental discounts...so if anyone wants those, let me know!
Just a heads up for folks coming in the opening weekend, I just got a glimpse at what else is going on in Atlanta and thought I'd share it in case it impacts traffic.
Dogwood Festival
Sweetwater Festival
Bon Jovi concert
Braves games
Robotics competition
Two versions of Freaknik
Traffic might be heavier than normal in the evening (I can't imagine morning traffic would really be hit that hard). It might save you some frustration if you look at possible alternate routes home beforehand if you normally go through the city.
i thought bon jovi concert was tomorrow night cause i can't go to it i'm going to be at another concert(not that i was planning to go anyway)
Whoops! You're right. I was going by what was in an AJC article and didn't think to check the actual concert date. So that's one less thing to worry about. ;)
If you're planning on going down and through the city during that weekend, you probably want to figure out an alternate route. The Dogwood festival is actually up near Stone Mountain which isn't anywhere near the city center, but freaknik is going to cause all sorts of trouble (It always did/does). Also keep in mind that if you aren't there earlyish, like before opening gate, to GARF, the traffic in that area come 10:30 ~ 11:00 turns into a standstill (on opening weekend anyway). My friends and I found that out the hard way last year, and ended up giving up, parking about 3/4 a mile away and just walked it. We passed a good 80 cars or so on the way so we made better time than we would have if we were driving.
yeah that was my mistake last year i stopped and we ate in mcd's instead of getting it to go. definately not repeating that mistake again we lost around 30/40 minutes sitting in and eating that i could have skirted the traffic i don't mind arriving early enough to watch the people come in dressed in garb and some dressed as mundanes i enjoy it
this is not my first fair, but im bringing newbies, whats everyones opinion as this being my friends first fair experience....
i don't know depends on the Person they may find they love renfest then the may run away screamin
working the faire does have its benefits. sean and i will be leaving to head to faire well before 600AM (not that it takes us terribly long to get to faire). and probably leaving well after everything is closed down as well.
what benefits
we don't have to deal with the opening day traffic (as we will be getting to faire well before the traffic starts, and leaving well after it's over), among other perks, such as free admission, etc.
i really enjoy working the faire! :) i think it's so much more fun than being a patron, even though you don't get to see or do as much. this'll be my second year working (last year, i was a volunteer at the parrot house, which is where i met my wonderful boyfriend!) and i hope to be working for the other years that i go. :)
yeah i think it would be fun to work at Garf
( getting paid to dress in Garb every weekend sounds fun to me)
