There was the "Finnished Projects" thread on the hacker infested board, how about we start somethig new over here? Does anyone have any intresting ongoing projects? Trying anything new, either new type of project or working in a medium that you havent used before?
I'm working on a set of decorative, yet functional, bronze lacing rings. Tried to cast twenty of the buggers at once, and mess up on my math, using about 2/3 the metal I needed, and only ended up with eight. Now I get to start over. And I have to wait till August to get access to the casting equipement again, because it's at the local community college.
Also trying to work on a design for pewter mugs and goblets. I have not worked with pewter before, and have been having trouble finding a suitable supply of metal to experiment with.
I'm still working on sketches and plans to build a collapsable frame to clip on over a stroller to look like a gypsie wagon, complete with patchwork fabric cover.
I've been doing small metal castings for about two and a half years. sewing and minor carpentry I've been dabbling in since about the time I could walk.
I would love to see pictures of what you're working on Hoowil! That sounds like a tough projuct, best of luck.

Which one?
This is the base design for the rings, which I'm planning on also using for clasps, buttons, and whatever else comes to mind.

Working in lost wax, the peice is about 1/8" thick. I've got a working mold of the base, thankfully, but need to modify each one for the final cast. The sprue at the top will be cut off, and finished to match. The rings i have so far have a 12 guage half circle that comes off the sides of the two lower points. They haven't been cleaned or polished at all yet, and have some finishing work still to do, as well as making sure my stitching holes go through the metal. I don't have any other work in progress pics at the moment, and come to think of it, I'm not sure where my camera is.
I'm working on a braided rug, although not too period since I'm making it out of old denim jeans! But it's still fun.
I'm working on some favor to be giving out at the KYHRF and the ORF as soon as I get caught up with getting ready for the KYHRF.
I have a current renaissance related project. You're reading it. ;)
I just finished a hair pice that can be worn at Fair or club for Kim Stalkwell. I hope she likes it. here are some images of the finished piece. It falls to the mid upper back, right where the bra line is.

She wanted specific colors and so I tried to go off the memory of them to get this. Although there is WAY to much pink. Unfortunately I could not locate a purple or maroon colored lox tubing.

Most excellent work!
Well not ren but this weekend...
Sort of currently, but not because of school...
A pirate top, from a Simplicity pattern (pieces cut out of test fabric)
Some sort of pouch to put on my belt, just big enough to hold wallet, keys, cell, Advil. Either leather or fabric, I'm not sure.
Really in the plotting stage. After the 22nd, I will be free to do what I want, though.
A friend of mine needed something to attach a goblet to her belt. Goblets don't hang too well from a regular tankard strap, so I tossed that out completly and came up with something new.
(if you click on the pictures, you will be linked to a new window where you can see a larger picture.)

thats my goblet in the picture, her's is silver plate (or looks it atleast.) It turned out to be a perfect fit.
(http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i47/jcbanner/projects/th_P1010414-1.jpg) (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i47/jcbanner/projects/P1010414-1.jpg)
(thats an odd glare on the picure, didn't even notice it till i downloaded it a few mins ago :-\ )
All the edges are sealed with beeswax and a touch of flame. I left the inside portion unstained so that it won't sweat the color off onto the polished metal it will be holding. I'm quite plesed with how it turned out since it was basicly being designed as being made.
wow great job indeed, i love it
how much do they cost?
Thank you. I hadnt really thought about making them to sell. (I'm a hobbiest really, so I don't sell too much) but if someone asked me to make them one, I'd guess about $25 would be suitable to cover my cost and time
This is an amazing start to a new "Finished Projects" threads. I am always awed at what all of you come up with!
Just a "outside chance", but I was able to locate some of the old thread on the Google Cached service. I may try to copy some of it over here in the next few days. Don't let this stop you from posting your new work. It's all fantastic!

as I was giving the belt hanger for the goblet to the queen at the dress rehersal this weekend, the court jester asked me about making for him a pouch to hold his sets a juggling balls. heres what I came up with.
front
(http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i47/jcbanner/projects/th_P1010416.jpg) (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i47/jcbanner/projects/P1010416.jpg)
and back
(http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i47/jcbanner/projects/th_P1010417.jpg) (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i47/jcbanner/projects/P1010417.jpg)
the straps down the back serve a duel purpose, they will add strength to the pouch, and if he wants, he can run the belt through there instead of the top loops if he wants it to sit centered on his belt instead of below it.
Though in hindsight, mayby I should have dug into my stash of colored leathers, he IS a jester after all.
I have taken up yet another hobby... slumping and fusing glass to make little dishes. I have trying out my little kiln and I am liking the results but by no means have I perfected it yet. So here are some of my early pieces... just for show and tell.

Long time no see! Nice digs y'all got here!
Anyhow, I finally finished that waterskin I was working on:
I'm slowly getting a tutorial for it together - I'll post it and perhaps another when it's done.
Thistle, I'll be anxiously awaiting that tutorial. I found a nylon cased boda bottle in a thrift store the other day. Got it for 25 cents.
Escarlata -
I still want to clean it up and make it pretty, but the info should all be there now -
Making a waterskin (http://www.dreamthunder.com/Hobbies/tutorials/waterskin.html)
Anyone remember what chapter in LOTR that "maybe we can fill them later" exchange between Frodo and Sam is? It's been ages since I've read 'em, but I'd like to add that little paragraph to start the whole tutorial off with.
Finally, here's a few other little bits of recent leatherwork - a sheath for a utility knife that came with a kukri a fantastic friend gifted me, and some tooled hangers for an "elvish" dagger:
My latest project was a swagger stick for myself for steampunk outfit at a Con this summer. It's turned out of rosewood and it actually a bit darker than in the pic
(http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b160/Groomporter/canes/P1010006.jpg)
My latest project is a set of decorative bodice extenders for a Moresca Max II (I think)-- the one that laces on the sides and back. I have grown larger than the original lacing of the bodice allows and so I've been tying decorative knots up the sides to add more space without looking positively horrid. Unfortunately, having to redo the laces on one side every time I get in and out is quite a pain, so I've been doing and un-doing from the back, which I can handle ok, except I'd REALLY like to put knotwork down the back too.. so now, I'm trying to find a way to make the lacing on the side easier to manipulate, so that I can put something pretty down the back.
My other project is a rope corset that only covers the front and sides.. the back consists of a spiderweb made of gold cord (already completed) which is attached to some steel rings which the rope will lace through. Fantasy garb is so much fun :)
Here is what i have been making lately.

Cool Diva! Ive always wanted to get a kiln for slumping! I made some pieces a couple of years back when i had access to one. Just make sure you use glass from the same manufacture or test to make sure they are compatible, or the results can be quite "shattering" ;)
I posted more pics in the arms and armor section, but this is my latest work. It took several hundred hours. I made the cuirass, greaves, helmet crest/liner, shield, clothing, sub-armour, and spear.

Since we lost the other thread, here are the last renaissance projects I did just before the other forum died. First is a scabbard, sheath, and belt for an Arms and Armor gold plated Elizabethan Rapier/Dagger Set.

Second is a wooden core scabbard and baldric for an Albion Gallowglass.

An almost finished project. ;D
It's a 30" diameter oak table we found at Savers that I'm turning into a board for playing "Byzantine Chess" a circular chess game that seems to date to the 10th century. I just need to add a couple more green knots to the center circle to balance it out a little more. Once I put some polyurethane on it colors will mellow out a little.
Phenomenal stuff guys..
Chris.. the armor is great.. so is the leather, and castings for the scabbards.
Groom.. great knotwork.. very nice looking table. Would make a wonder addition to a game room anywhere.
A feather fan I made
So I decided to try and make my own fan. Here it is. I have 1 more little thing I want to do to it but other wise this is how it looks.
the front side
(http://www.delaneyalysa.com/fan/fan6.jpg)
Close up of the handle
(http://www.delaneyalysa.com/fan/fan9.jpg)
the back side of the fan
I took two pieces for the fan top and glued them together. then cut it in half making sure I left the circle in the niddle now covered by the gem.
The Handle was what looked like two wheat blooms with the flower in the middle. I glued a 1/4 piece of hard wood to it leaving 1/2 of the wheat bloom not attached. I then cut out around the flower and the wheat bloom. I then took an Identical wheat bloom pice and glued it to the other side then cut the extra wheat bloom off.
I then cut the half circle out of the handle so the top piece would fit in.
Once all this was done I drilled a hole in the top piece middle on the half circle and in the half circle on the handle and put a pin in it to help hold it and glued it with very high quality wood glue.
Once dry I sanded and filed tol get the rough out from the cutting.
I then sealed it with sand sealer three times then painted it gold then sealed it again
The last step was to drill large and small holes for the feathers and then I epoxied them in with a high strenght epoxy. then glues on my gems.
I want to add some lace where the feathers meet the wood. But all in all this is done.
Oh I also added a eye screw on the end so I can attached it to my belt.
Neat fan!
My latest project was three groups of Celtic musicians on three wooden plaques (bar stool seats rejected by the manufacturer bought at a local surplus store)
All three:

This is my most recently finished craft project. It took approx 21 feet of rope (one solid piece). I made it for a Celtic cross contest. It is the first Celtic cross that I've attempted with nylon rope. http://knottynymph.deviantart.com/art/Celtic-Cross-in-Rope-88871813
Grr.. I can't make the picture show although I swear I've done it a zillion times before- I guess you'll have to click the link :(

Wow!
Punstergal - pretty! I'd have not thought of actually, you know, making knotwork out of real knots. That's right clever.
Chris - that's amazing! So you did all the metalwork and castings as well? Have you ever thought about making custom leatherstamps? *hint hint*
groomporter - beautiful artwork! So are all the gameboards over on historicgames.com yours? The "Four Seasons" theme on the "master pieces" page is just incredible...
Here's one of my latest things. More fantasy than historical, but a tooled leather pouch. Seemed kinda appropriate for being surrounded by the Chugach Mountains up in Anchorage:
(http://www.dreamthunder.com/Hobbies/Fantasy/beltpouch/pouchfront_400.jpg) (http://www.dreamthunder.com/Hobbies/Fantasy/beltpouch/pouchfront_800.jpg)
I made it so I could just cut off the front flap and replace it if I ever wanted to change the design. There's also a little brass ring on each side, so I can attach a strap and use it as a small purse in the mundane world.
Edit - and here it is as as mundane purse:

Yup those are mine. Thanks!
Thank you much for fixing my image, whomever.. my brain was just not working enough to get it right. I guess maybe I've been playing with the ropes too long and the simple stuff is what's confusing now, hehe.
Now that I've figured out a way to tie at least one model of Celtic cross, I may start making some smaller scale ones to use as garb ornamentation. I love being able to tie two of my loves together (no pun intended).
Wow! There are some great projects in here! My family and I are real newbies to ren faires and posting at this site for sure. This is only my second post. I'd been lurking on and off for a few months before the big loss. Still not entirely sure what happened to the old site.
Anyway, I just wanted to share a few of our weird creations that are not, in anyway, historical. But, they are lots of fun! Since we have little money to spare for costumes for faire, I've been playing around with soda/beer can tabs and bottle caps for awhile now trying to come up with something somewhat passible for the look at least. Hey, they are cheap and easily aquired. Any suggestions/ideas/opinions would be great.
This is my mom and me in our can tab corset/bodices at Scarby 2008:
And my daughter in her "warrior princess" costume:
The whip is made from green poly rope, a pencil, and duct tape. We were actually able to get it to crack!
Here is a crown made with the addition of fruit and soup can tabs:
It is flexible and can double as a neckace. I call it a "crownlace".
The latest project is this cavalier-style pirate hat made with skull shoelaces:
In the process of making a matching corset.
I love making crafts out of just about anything. I wish I had access to the knowledge and tools to create more authentically historical items like what is on here. Please, forgive me for adding my attempts at "garb" here. Can't wait to see more projects from others!
newbiehere:
Welcome to the board! Those projects are great! There is no need to apologize. They show some real creativity. I see you already found the other thread over in garbing discussing can tab projects too. I do look forward to seeing pictures of your next projects!
Gwen:
That was me with the picture ;) For some reason I had to drill down a bit to find the actual image link and not the photo site reference. No worries... just let me know if you have any further problems.
Thank you, Magister.
Yes, I did find the other post. Nice to know I'm not the only one these days playing around with the tabs. I had to apologize because I know that can tabs used in a ren outfit has to be frowned upon by many. :( I just love working with them. Love the way they look, too.
I'm going to start on a more Victorian-style black corset for my sister, next. More curves, yeah! It is supposed to be piratey looking. She wants something like Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale) wore in Van Helsing. Then, when the stocks are replenished, I'm going to attempt the jacket.
The tabs are very creative. You have a lot of creativity and they look great.
Here is a 2 1/2 week project I just finished today. It is a 5th century Athenian Aspis made entirely by me. I'll eventually work my way back into the renaissance, but this year is Ancient Greece. Now I can't decide which Greek shield to carry at Texas Ren Fair's All Hallow's Eve (this or the pegasus shown on page 2 of this thread).
Thanks Chris B. I definitely think you should go with this one. Very beautiful! We are thinking of going All Hallow's weekend again, too. Maybe we'll see you there.
First - Chris, I have to admit, I like the drama of the pegasus on your other shield. But they're both beautiful. And come back carrying it, not on it, eh? ;)
Second - newbiehere - wow! Talk about trash into treasure! That's amazing... and your little one looks like she's having so much fun! :)
Anyhow -- ooh! ooh! Got some more done!
First, a little pouch to go with my firesteel and suchlike. It's basically a tiny little sporran, just big enough for a tin of charcloth and a chunk of flint:
Secondly, well... here's the story. A couple years ago while wandering the Gig Harbor faire in Washington State, I ran across a gentleman selling all manner of nifty leathergoods. My hands were already full of a couple CDs and some printed fabric I'd bought, so I went ahead and bought a small duffle from him to carry it all in. It was just so plain though.. so I added some grommets for the drawstring up top, then added a flap edged in deerskin and all a-covered with ribbons and trinkets - including my R/F pin!
(The arms and Scots badge are tooled and painted leather, the Gypsy Wheel is twisted wire, and the claddagh and harp are purchased fancies)
Finally and most especially, hanging on that bag is a tooled case for my flute, with the same tooled dancing bird on it, along with some familiar looking "two trees." ;)
Being up in Alaska, I couldn't help but add the Sickle of the Val.. I mean, the Big Dipp.. I mean, "The Plough" in the sky at the top. I think one day I might stick some little crystals in there for fun.
Finally finished these for my jester costume. The stockings have been a long time going (I started them over a year ago) so I'm happy to finally have them done. My first socks! The garters are tablet woven and my first actual project with that. The shoes (which I love) were made by Lady Oren.

Erynn,
Those socks are awesome!! And a great accessory- I could see them fitting in with all kinds of interesting costumes!
Newbie - If you do go, stop us and say hello. I am sure I will probably stick out in a Greek Panalopy. It is the only weekend that it would fit though.
Thistle - Yeah, I kind of like the Pegasus too. We shall see. I am working on a scaled Linothorax at the moment so I will also have to decide between that and the muscled cuirass when the time comes. Thanks for the comments.
Erynn - Those are very nice. I like the detail in the design.
Thanks Gwen ad Chris. Now I just need to get the motivation to finish the rest of the costume...
Erynn , your bottom half of your outfit is AWSOME, I love those socks. Keep us posted. ;)

Here's a little belt pouch I made for my Daughter, who wants to be a woodland Elf. It was made from an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of leather from Hobby Lobby (since we do not have a Tandy leather store within a hundred miles of us), some dye and a free design from the Tandy website. Next comes one for me!
PS for Thistle: very nice tooling job on your pouch & flute case!
Several paper mache masks I made recently... there are descriptions if you click on them.

well not ren but comfy...

only another six or so to go...
I just made my first ever piece of jewelry that didn't involve macaroni and/or glitter!

It's made from a medallion style belt I found at Winners that I got for half price because it was broken. I took out some of the medallions and added chain between the ones I had left, except in the middle where I used lobster clasps. I used two, one on each side, for symmetry. The dangly part is two long pieces of chain attached through holes in the centre front medallion that lead down to a final medallion as a fob. Zatahra - I am really impressed with your leather working skill. I have always wanted to try dying a piece in multiple color, but I have always been unsure how to get it to look like that. Very nice.
Andunie - It looks like you have really got making masks down to an art. Your work is very beautiful. I bet they would also make a very nice home decor item too.
Baron - It looks like you have some woodworking skills there. What are you going to use them for? They like the overall geometry of the chair.
GirlChris - I think it is attention to the small details that make one outfit stand out from another. That looks really good with the long skirt. Nice work.
Pipere - It also looks like you do nice work. Did you make your outfit too?
I just finished another piece of Greek armour. It is a H/A scaled linothorax. Now I am left with the decision of whether to wear this or the Bronze Cuirass on the earlier page to Halloween at the Texas Fair this year. The armour is made of 14 layers of solid linen that has been glued and sewn together. Every flap is edged by gluing and hand sewing linen bias tape to the edge. Then I used various trims across the body and hand stitched each through all 14 layers with an awl and needle. Every red square has a stitch running through it. The roughly 450 solid bronze scales were hand made and individually attached through all 14 layers as well. It took between 200 and 250 hours to make, but it is as historically accurate as they come and my favorite creation to date.
I am interested in opinions on whether this or the cuirass on page 2 would be the bigger head turner. Of course, these pics are only meant to show the armor. Either way, I would be wearing the bronze greaves, sword, shield, helmet with the crest, etc.

Wow, that is awesome. As for turning heads thats a tough call. For those who would recognize such things, the linothorax would be a real treat to see. But, the bronze is shiny, and nothing catches the eye like shine. And I would think more people would be familiar with the cuirass design. Also, I wonder if people will ask about the linothorax being Egyptian because of the scorpion, and the Scorpion King of recent mummy movies, which might get a little irritating after the work and research on a Greek peice

We finished the belt pouch! My wife sewed the belt loops onto the back because my hands were too big to do it, but I did the side stitching (just a simple whip stitch), and the design is mine. It's cut and sewn from one single piece of leather that was in a bag of Tandy scrap leather I bought at Hobby Lobby for three bucks. The concho we already had, and the string is a boot lace that was lying around the house.

I am totally speechless at the Greek armor work. They are gorgeous sets, and to think HANDMADE...WOW.
Everyone's work is REALLY great!!! I'm getting ideas!! lol
I dabble a little in woodburning, whittling, jewelry making, sewing, cross stitching, and broom making...but nothing actually renaissance. I did make the blouse (no pattern), skirt (no pattern), wreath style bracelet, and ear rings in my faery picture.
I tired my hand at wire earring wraps per a very special request. :) Here's a finished one that I would actually dubb jewlery. No piercing required!

That wire earring wrap is beautiful, Ranna! I would so wear those!
I wanted to show off my new turkish vest made of can tabs. I like it much better than the old empire waist bodice I first made. This one is way more comfortable to move around in. And, it's more adjustable, too.

The latest cane I've made. I bought the eagle head on Ebay along with a more standard-looking vintage brass cane handle, but I think the eagle was originally a finial for an indoor flag pole or something since it was larger in diameter than most canes. Thus, I had to add a larger piece of wood under it in order to mount it on what I usually use for shafts. I've got a request for a gadget cane to hide a "smoking" ::) accoutrement, so that's probably the next one I'll do.
I bet that cane would hurt if you bashed someone with it. A little peck on the head with that would bring things to a stop.
Yup it's pretty solid, a good one for walking dark alleys ;D
NICE Work, Gents! Excellent!
Oh, forgot to mention that I've done a lot of leather work and made walking sticks during my Native American powwow days. So, keep up the good work, Lads.

No, I just do it for fun and there are a lot of mistakes that a pro would never make.
I made those 2 pieces for fair friends. They simply reimburse me for the materials and buy me a beer or 2 as a thanks. I like it that way!
Sounds like a good deal to me! Still, you did very nice work, for an amateur. ;)
In the powwow world, the natives don't believe there are "mistakes" in leather work. They think what would be considered mistakes or flaws only serves to make it more authentic looking. S'pose one could look at it that way and feel better about it?

Newbie, that is so very cute. Is it as comfy as it looks?
Well, I've only had it on briefly for our little photo shoot, but it seems like it will be so far. The last one I made was extremely comfortable. I don't own any traditional corsets, so I have no real comparison to go by. Though, we are constantly moving at faire and walking for what seems like miles rarely sitting to rest for the entire day. Yet my back felt great.
UPDATE: I finally wore this one all day at Scarborough for beer/wine tasting Sunday. And, yay! It was very comfortable.
WOW is all I've got to say... I can't remember the last time I saw something so unique!! It looks like chain mail almost, but not quite... You could certainly go a bit more warrior style with it, carry a long sword and such... I'd definitely do an off the shoulders undershirt that's flowy for the slightly sexy and dangerous look.... I was also thinking a dangerous beauty style bottoms would be fun, like a split skirt front showing bloomers underneath. I do this for my courtesan outfit, but it seems it would go well with this if you did the colors a bit darker and less courtesany... Like maybe a gold overskirt to match the emblem on the front and some dark grey or black bloomers.... just my thoughts when I see this.
Hat styles, I have no idea... sorry, just not seeing a hat with this really...
Newbiehere...that's absolutely gorgeous!!
Thanks, LadyElizabeth and Tammy.
And, LadyElizabeth, those are some wonderful ideas. I tried an off white shirt that had nice poofy sleeves, but the neckline did nothing for it. Your right. Definitely has to be off the shoulders. I'll have to watch this movie "Dangerous Beauty". I did a search and found a few images.
I just couldn't picture a hat, either. That's why I asked. I like to keep the sun off my face and out of my eyes, but maybe a parasol is a better choice. Thanks so much for the great suggestions.
Wow! you're getting so good at those!

Since it seems he's not going to ;) , I thought I'd post some pics of the mug holders and parasol holder that Cormac made for us. We finally got to wear them in a "photo shoot" for the first time just yesterday at Scarby. Though, of course, it was overcast all day with no real need for the parasol, we wanted to try out the holder to see how well it works. It did it's job splendidly.
Mom with her mug and parasol holders
(http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee2/thinnen/scarby%20pics%204-26-09/mom_back_b.jpg)
At the last minute she decided to wear a belt over her bodice, but the belt she choose is really not sturdy enough for the weight of the parasol.
Our camera likes to oversaturate reds and play tricks on the eyes. In person the lace matches the parasol holder much better than the pic shows.
I love that this mug holder is extra long, which works prefectly under the bodice.
Thank you so much Cormac. You did a really great job on everything.
My latest experimental cane. I found a candlestick made with three sections of ceramic and cannibalized the parts. The next one is a little more "shapely" than the simple globe on this one and I think will turn out better and fit the hand better.

Wow very cool thread. Had to say what creative people the Rennys are. Keep posting the great work.
Have to apologize again for not having H/A projects to show, but I have more "tabistry" things made. I've been making hair accessories with the can tabs, lately. Then, I happened upon this idea:
My "Monster" Mask
(http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee2/thinnen/can%20tabs/mask/mask_02d_sml400w.jpg)
This masquerade mask is made with those colorful "Monster" can tabs. Can you believe how many colors they come in?!
Below are the hair holders I started.

My daughter has been building up a collection of cups. I figured it's about time for her to be able to hang one on her belt. The toggle looks big, but its not really. To put it in proper perspective, she's 2, and the goblet is maybe 3 inches tall, holding less than a 1/4 cup of drink.
And yes, she is limited to water or lemonade at faire :)
I just finished my pomander! It is not truly HA--the beading really isn't, but it gives it the aesthetic. It hangs on a chain that I'll wrap around the waist as a girdle belt. My chain is a wee bit short, so it looks like it will hang at knee length rather than midcalf like most historical paintings show.
Later I will be making the wax ball filled with aromatics to go in it. I'm really excited to try some historical recipes for them!
Hrmm.. did that used to be a tea ball? If so, that's a rockin idea! If not, well, thanks for the inspiration <giggle>..
Indeed it is! ;D I found a few pomander photos that did closely resemble tea balls.

Beautiful work! What do you use to make your wings?
I make wings with just about anything and everything I can find (I'm a HUGE fan of recycling craft supplies). One of those was braided vines left to dry out after being glued in a wingish shape. The rest of them were frames made of heavy floral wire (the kind you just for big stems) wrapped with raffia and the middle part is some raffia-ish thread that is usually used for making dreamcatchers (I can't remember what it's called offhand, mine hasn't had a label in like 10 years).
Oh, I almost forgot the most recent piece! It was a true labor of love, about halfway through, I almost called it quits because the braid didn't want to lay flat like I wanted it.

Absolutely beautiful.
Wow, Gwen! I really like this last one! Gorgeous! Glad you didn't give up on it. I think I have some of that gold rope around here and complete understand the difficulty you had with it. It doesn't like twisting very well. :)

Because of my pointed ears and cap many people at faires call me Link (from Legend of Zelda fame) and it's actually how I got my persona name. Anyway, I thought that being a dark Link I'd need some accouterments. One of his items in the games is a fairy which he captures in a bottle and uses to heal himself. Well, Knil caught the fairy, but he forgot about it.
Note: No Fairies were harmed in the making of this item.
the dragon is awesome!!!
and the fairy looks a little cheesed off!!! i like it!!
Iam really proud of how this mask came out

Good evening all,
Here is a sqain dubh I just finished up a couple weeks ago for trade for a casual kilt (Gordon Modern) over at X-Marks. This is the first completed period piece. This is a bit different from a normal one in that it has a full tang instead of stick tang. The handle is carved African blackwood.

The top. Since I couldn't mount a gem in the top I tried a little bit of file work.

Drac
Wow Drac! That's really nice. It's uncommon to see a piece that's so simple in design look so beautiful due to the materials used and the quality of the finish. That second shot really shows the depth of the blackwood. Excellent work!!
Very nice work Drac, looks great!
After reading threads here, I got the bug to try something with Witchballs/Friendship balls. They are hand blown glass, imported from the Carpathian mountains. Witchballs have glass threads running side to side in them, history says the threads tangle up evil spirits to keep the house safe.
Sticks were bought already made. I drilled into the top, sized the hole to fit the individual ball, and then used a combination of very heavy alumnium wire and 2 part expoxy to keep the ball in place. It was a fun project!

Things I've been working on lately...
Pirate hat I've been decorating for AHE at TRF this year... one for my daughter and one for the friend who will be coming with us. My daughter wasn't planning on having a hat, but our friend showed up one day with this cheap faux distressed leather look tricorn hat from the Halloween Store for her, and it actually had pretty good lines, so I just ran with it... LOL (sorry for the blur... but it was 4am when I took the pics, and the tripod was in my daughter's room attached to her telescope at the time).
Front view with Humphrey the Rennie Fairy hamster riding in his spot, along with one of the favors I made for TRF last year...
Right side, with favors my daughter was given at RenDezvous this year at Scarby...
Back view, more favors...
Left side, with the RenDezvous pin designed by Lady Joyce Ann, who so very sweetly gifted it to my daughter (sealing her place in my heart forever)! I found the pistol pin online, and the rose is an antique silver lapel pin I've had for years. I couldn't resist the whole Guns-n-Roses look... :D

The gold studs gave it a bit more bling, and the scalloped trim was a Hancocks Fabrics score that just set off the whole thing perfectly... Well, my daughter loves it, at least! ;)
Here's a front shot of the hat I did for the friend who brought us the first one. When she saw what I did to it, she decided she wanted her own, and showed up on my doorstep with big 'ole puppy dog eyes... ::) heheh

Nice! That's some thick leather. Should make for a nice, sturdy bag.
It's really beautiful leather, good weight, top grain, and vat dyed, so that it's a very even shade of the most gorgeous milk chocolate brown... and the softest buttery feel you can imagine.
I'll probably be keeping this one, but I'll actually have a few of these pouches with me down at TRF this weekend, if anyone should decide they would really like to buy one! In different sizes, even! ;)
Nicely done, Rani. I love how you did the closure. Very unique. :)
Thank you, Anna! I have to admit I was kind of pleased with that part, myself. It's fun, also, because the stone will only fit through the circle if you turn it the right way, so it won't accidentally unclasp, and it can't be easily opened in passing by some slippery footpad out to see what they can pinch! ;)
Square pegs and round holes working in harmony... :D

I spent the past three Mondays learning how to temper chocolate and make candies. I think (? feel free to move if it belongs elswhere) this is the most appropriate place to share a few pictures from the class :)

What flavors are they?

Thank You, Drac! I had so much fun in this class! I definitely plan to make a few batches to give away this winter ;D
Tempering is a bit tricky, you just have to really mind your temperatures...people who have been doing it for years can tell the temperature by feel ~ I definitely still need a thermometer!
We made dark, milk, and white "chocolate" truffles, the crescents are marzipan flavored with orange extract & dipped in dark chocolate, and the other shapes (mostly triangles) are Gianduja pralines. The boxes we made are tempered & poured dark chocolate.
So in no way faire related but I am so freaking proud of this little guy i could steal the moon right now!

I started out making a face cause i was bored then it erupted into a week long project that I think is one of my most favorite things ever! This is my homage to Tim Burton.
His face is made from crayola air dry clay, his hands, jacket, shirt and shoes are fimo, and his body is made of a wire base wrapped in paper mache and Rigid Wrap(?), I pained over with some acrylics aaand... I freaking love him!
Okay, all done.
Becky he's wonderful. :) Who's that on his shoulder?
Oh, Becky... he really IS amazing!!! How cool is that...? Very nice!!!
Thanks guys! Seeing that he was just something to keep my hands busy while talking I am really happy with how he came out.
Anna: Thats Marcus the rat, he just kind of ended up being made lol
You should write a story about their adventures. Really bring them to life. :)
My first addition to the craft threads- also my first time doing jewelry. I really wanted an Antiquity era copper necklace and decided to try it myself.
It turned out to be much easier then I originally thought.
The first two photos are my inspiration images and the last two are the end project. Certainly not as fancy as the reference pictures but I like it!

Here's a leather mask I've been working on. I am completely unable to draw a straight line so this was way more of a challenge than it should have been. On the bright side (hehe), it does glow in the dark :)

I don't like the waxing job, though, so I think I'll redo that before I go to the Colorado Ren Fest next weekend.
Nighthawk, it looks like the wax didn't cool evenly. Did you use parafin or beeswax?

Well, given that this was my first attempt at a water bottle, I went on the cheap and used parafin. I'm going to pop this sucker in the oven, melt the wax off and try again. I know I can do better...
I've made a few of these, so my advice to you is to get a funnel and ladle the wax into the bottle. fill it maybe a third of the way full, "cork" it and swish it around for a minute or two. Slowly pour it out while turning the bottle to get a nice even coverage on the opening.
Hope that helps :)

I had a good friend who taught me leathercraft. He used to dip the entire bottle into the wax, let it fill, use a paper towel to wipe and buff the outside, and then he would empty the inside, which is what I tried, and why there's so much wax on the outside. I didn't clean the outside nearly as well as he used to!
His came out looking like this...

Thanks for your advice. I do appreciate it.
Those are quite nice. Your friend is talented :)

Yes, they are lovely. He did a lot of work with the Vikings Vinland. You should have seen the shield he made! He made his own planks with a hatched, made the glue to hold them together, painted it with milk paint, all that! The glue he used for his leather goods was all glue that he made himself. He went all out for authenticity.
So- back on topic! I melted the wax off in the oven and rewaxed the thing. It looks a lot better now! I'll take and post pictures sometime this afternoon.
Here it is!!

Much better now...
Very nice leatherwork from everyone here, but I must ask about this particular piece? Is it over a plastic bladder with a lid, or is it wax lined and you have some kind of stopper? I can't tell.
Thank you

It's wax lined. I currently am using a stopper from a whiskey bottle- the cork variety with a plastic head on top. I'll be replacing that eventually, as soon I figure out what I want to replace it with!

Yeah it did! This was more of an experiment, really, having not done one before. But truth is, I'm so pleased with it now that I think I may just have to keep it! 8)
Been a while since I made any canes and came up with this one for a certain "market". First time I drilled that deep a hole in a cane straight enough without breaking through the side. The longest strand is about 16 inches.

Took a little time for myself today, and figured I'd try my hand at a few projects I've had in mind.
First was a little wood carving. A practice simple scroll design, nothing too elaborate. It's about 5 inches long by 2.5-3 inches tall in a piece of scrap wood. Next, was some glass engraving. I started off with a pattern which promptly didn't work out, so I had to freehand it. It's done on a mason jar and is around 6 inches by 3 inches or so.

Magister, are these both done with your rotary tool, as well? Just using different attachments?
Very beautiful, btw!
Yes, both are done with the Power Carver. The carving required the use of several different burrs, but the glass engraving was mostly done with a very tiny diamond burr.
Neat! I love glass etchings. My fiance has been making some etched mirrors lately by doing all his etching on the reverse side of the mirror. I tried my hand at it, but I am apparently not steady enough.
I'm impressed by your freehand drawing skills, as well! It couldn't have been easy to control an electronic tool while doing such find detail. Can you post a pic of the tool, itself, so I have an idea of the size of it? The Dremmel I have would be far too bulky and unwieldy for that kind of close work, I thing, even though it's not terribly heavy. It's several years old, though, and they can probably make them smaller and lighter now.
Rani:
Thanks, as always. I went ahead and put a thread out there with some information on tool that way we don't take up real estate in this thread. I'll try to get a picture of my setup today at some point. Hopefully the information and videos in the thread will give you an idea of what it is and can do.

The PP was looking a project for himself, and decided that since he loved puppets, and story telling, he might try making puppets. He had made a few in the past but nothing like the muppet style. Knowing nothing at all about what he was getting into, he made his first one to match a local comic book guy. I think it turned out so well, that he is in the process of making another. He had me draft the shirt pattern for him, but otherwise he made "Big Guy" himself. I am quite proud of the PP for this.

Since then he has completed 2 more. He has D'Roc. A Blue Gargoyal. A friend of ours is a graphic artist and he is making an iron 'screen' for the musle shirt he is wearing.
Then he started Beezel, who is a fire imp. He is red and black with long spindly arms and tail. I am quite pround of him and his work.
A while back, a buddy of mine on another forum posted a couple pictures of a Jacobite period sporran. I decided to make a sporran based on the one he posted, and I finished it earlier tonight. What do you all think?

For the oak leaf masks, I use Folk Art brand metallic acrylic paint to color my masks. Then I seal it with Leather Sheen which is a glossy acrylic sealant for leather.
For the harlequins, I used Tandy's Chocolate Cherry All-in-One, then finished with Leather Sheen.
Greetings & Well Met! Just wanted to share a couple of spur of the moment crafty projects I just finished... a pair of satin brocade belt pouches. The green one I made for myself to match a bodice I just finished; it is lined inside with tan faux suede. Its a little rough because I had to figure out how to get enough fabric out of the scraps I had left. The black with red came out better. That one is for my daughter to match her dark red outfit, and is lined with black faux suede.

Thanks :) I like to use 5-6oz, but I've used as light as 4 and as heavy as 9. The problem with lighter weights is that they tend to feel flimsy unless you stiffen them. (I do this with a base coat of a spirit dye, then a few coats front and back of Super Sheen or Resolene) And if you're doing any tooling, once you form the mask it loses a lot of definition. The problem with heavier leathers is just that, they're heavy!
Hope that helps! :)
Gorgeous pouches, Soulstice! I love the details!
Thank you, Rani! I actually got a query from one of the vendors at the faire this weekend about where I "bought" my matching bodice and belt pouch and believe me, I was tickled pink to tell her I made them myself! I'm still smiling the next day, LOL!

I used to be an avid Needle Woman. Cross stitch on Linen, and other fine fabrics was something I loved to do. Since I've gotten older my hands aren't nearly as good as they once were, but I picked up my needle once again to make this special banner for our Mobile Home once we decided which one to get. Since it's main purpose is to transport us to the Many Faires we love to attend, it will carry a Faire theme inside and will be know by the name of Nightshadows Keep when we are at Faire, and probably anywhere else.
Yeah we get a little carried away sometimes.
It's not as spectacular as some other other work I've seen here, but I still would like to show it off. You all do such wonderful work and it's hard to comment on everything, but I admire it all.
I love it! ;D
Oh, how pretty, and fun, as well!!!

Huzzah!
Hail and well met
Lord Dragon & Lady Gryphon
Bids ye welcome to
Nightshadows Keep
Rest yourself and be at your ease

Respect the Fae Folk
And please don't fee our Dragon
Our resident guard is our 100 pound Cane Corso, aka Italian Mastiff, who will be traveling with us. He's friendly on his terms.
On the contrary, Lady Gryphon, I think it is most easily understood, and beautifully worked!
Thank you for the kind compliment. I haven't pick up a needle in over 10 years to do something such as this. I found a program on line that charted it, more or less for me and I added the gold and scarlet and the fleur de lis. All in all it was a fun project and I'm happy others enjoy it.
Wow! I hadn't checking in here for a while and such pretty additions.. Love the masks as always and the pouches are soooo pretty. I need to take your lead and do something pretty with my scraps!

I've been working on several projects for family and friends who attend a lot of Faires. Getting close to finishing a knitted snood, but not quite there yet. Have recently completed several Token / Trinket drawstring bags in various colors and fiber weights.
Folks I've made these for pin their tokens / trinkets on the outside of the bags and then put the tokens they have to share on the inside. They're approximately 6" x 9" and with the dual drawstrings, hang well from the wrist freeing up their hands. I'm making a rayon chenille bag with a design across the front to match my D-I-L's dress in blue and white. Haven't decided on the cording yet so it's not quite done.

Very cool mask! What does it say?
It says "emet" which is the hebrew word for truth. In the Golem story, the Golem becomes a bit too powerful and to stop it, its creator erases the first letter, changing the word to "met", which is the hebrew word for dead.
That is fascinating! I love it when there is great substance to great art. Thank you!

A couple of finished projects for opening weekend of TRF:
A revamped and embellished fan that was a gitft from a dear friend. I changed the handle fabric, added trim, embellished it with the two jewel pieces, and added in the peacock and teal feathers.

An upcycled hair clip.

Started with just the plain purple flower and added the fabric, feathers, and jewelled centerpiece.
My next project is going to be a fan from square 1!
Ooooh, pretty! And sparkly!!! Wonderful work, Lish... I love them both!

After being unable to find a pomander to purchase online for less than $50, I decided to make one myself :) Scented silk will fill this as soon as I can find some essential oils I like.
Beautiful! What is it made of?
Rani- It's made from a decorative (plastic?) pumpkin I recently found at Hobby Lobby. I'd been searching for months for a suitable "base" for a pomander with no luck...thank goodness for seasonal items! Bogie cut off the stem for me, I painted it and added the chain links to a pearl chain I found at Jo Ann's. I bought 8 more pumpkins to experiment with, I was so excited to find them! I think we're going to try cutting the top off of one and see if we can create a "lid" with it (if we can find a hinge that will work).
On a side note- does anyone have ideas or tips on scenting silk?
Only one tip about perfume - don't ever, ever, ever put perfume on a cotton ball (or piece of cloth) and place it in the bosom area. Did that many years ago and ended up with what would be a third degree chemical burn. It was a really good perfume, too.

Seriously??? I would NEVER have guessed that! I would love to see what you started with, if you have one in it's original state that you can take a photo of?

Left is the original, middle is with the stem removed and smoothed out, third is the completed project.
I tripped over to Lobby Lobby, and they had these made of fake antlers too. ;D
They are about 3"-4" across, they were on an end cap display along with matching bowls, baskets and other items made of the resin antlers. Balls like this seem to be popular this year, and there are a few different styes.
The antlers didn't look as good as your pumpkin, I'm hoping to run across something in a light metal.....
Rowen, if you do find something metal that will work as a pomander please pass along the information! My 10 month search for a metal pomander was unsuccesful. I was going to wait until christmas time this year and see if any stores are going to carry the metal potpourri balls that I might snag.
Oh, how fun! I thought they were metal when I first saw them. Great job!
I am currently watching the Christmas ornaments at Hobby Lobby. I am hoping to see some of the gold filigree balls again this year. Even if they have glass or plastic liners we could probably work with that..... ;)
I like this....chirping bird ornament...

Sears has some lovely 24K filigree ornaments...but they want $77 for 10 of them.
I've been doing a little more leather work.
For going on 18 years I've had an axe in collection that I couldn't carry because I didn't have any way to cover the blade, which not only was not acceptable by gate rules, but not exactly safe or comfortable to have on my belt. So I decided to try my hand at a sheath for it. While I am not totally satisfied with my tooling job I think it came out pretty well.

And as we've become involved in doing period archery and I've been teaching my daughter, she needed an appropriate arm guard. We both agreed that it needed a little decoration, so I took a few of the stamps I had to it.

The latest novelty cane that I made for fun and sold to a disabled person who collects canes. The bowl on the Oriental style pipe unscrews from the stem and fits inside the knob, and the stem, of course, fits in a hole down the shaft of the cane. Tight and padded so it doesn't rattle.

We have adopted a new family member, and it is only right that she get to dress up too. My wife made an off-hand comment about me making the puppy leather armor, and less than four hours of tinkering here is the result.(http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c154/squisheez/Mobile%20Uploads/0202151631a_zps3e0e0415.jpg) (http://s27.photobucket.com/user/squisheez/media/Mobile%20Uploads/0202151631a_zps3e0e0415.jpg.html)
Hoowil - congrats on the newest member of the fam! She looks pretty comfortable in that armor, love it. Your leather work is amazing both on puppy and axes a few posts up.
