So, tell me more about MIRF's Labor Day "Wrong Day"...
Title: Re: MIRF
Post by: LadyAnn on May 16, 2008, 09:52:10 AM
Labor day is considered wrong day, to some of us here at MIRF, because it's not on a normal weekend day.
This will be my first time participating in wrong day, and I'm looking forward to it with great pleasure. It would be a great pleasure to have you join us LHOTH. I already have my Wrong Day garb planned  ;)

Ladyhawke are you planning on the whole weekend or just Monday?  This is the weekend I usually trek up MIRF.

LadyAnn, did they have a day of wrong last year?  I didn't notice much unusual on Monday.  I will have to plan for something new this year.

The plan as of now is to drive up to MIRF on that Saturday (moving to SE Ohio has tacked about an hour and a half onto the drive and it's lengthy), and to do the entire days of Sunday and Monday. CLC has some hotels up there also, maybe we could split one of those great cheap rates!?

I had never heard of wrong day until some friends were discussing what they were going to wear this year. My friends told me that they had taken part in wrong day, but I was not there to see it.  It sounds like fun, so I thought I would try it out this year.  ;D

I saw some of the Day of Wrong outfits last year and, if I hadn't been told that they were doing it on purpose, I probably would have chalked it up as more of the "wrong" seen every day of faire! LOL

I once saw a woman at ORF dressed as a french fry...well, maybe more of a "steak" fry, but nonetheless, I'll bet that would be considered appropriate for the Day of Wrong...

I've seen many ways of doing Day of Wrong. One of Michigan's was a "tourist" invasion. Many folks showed up in full dorky tourist mode. They had a tour guide and planned out seeing the "sights" as a group.

Several faires have Day of Wrong, especially if they have a 3 day holiday during their run. I have seen some really clever outfits at the Maryland festival. They seem to take the path of designing perfect garb in all the wrong fabrics, aka a storm troopers uniform in perfect Tudor lines. Several of my favorites the year I was there included "The Godfather". It was an elizabethan doublet gown made from dark pinstripe suiting. There was the man from Clan McPicnic, he had a kilt of red check table cloth fabric and his sporran was a place setting of knife, fork and plate. Another had a kilt of camo fabric. There was the "OMG I'm blinded" tights made from silver holographic fabric that was unbearable to look at in the sunlight.

That was just spectacular.

My favorite was when Benny got his photo taken with Her Grace and then he proceeded to loudly proclaim as he walked away:

"Boy that Queen Victoria is a nice lady!"

Greetings All.  Good to be back up on the new and improved Forum.

Being on Cast at MiRF, one sees a lot of funny things each year on the Day of Wrong as well as hears stories from the years before being on Cast.  My favorite story is one from several years ago (don't know what year) when a guy came on the Day of Wrong dressed in a complete replica NASA Astronaut SPACE SUIT!  Supposedly this thing had a cooling system to not only keep the occupant comfortable but also to cool an onboard supply of BEER that was drank via a tube in the helmet.  His kept telling people that his spaceship had crashlanded nearby and he was just awaiting rescue. LOL  I wish I could have seen that!

Last year on the Day of Wrong we had a whole group that came dressed in SILVER JUMPSUITS, there was a Father, Mother, three Children, another Man and a Robot.  Yep, you guessed it, they were the ROBINSON FAMILY from the old Lost In Space TV show!  It was great!  We also get yearly visits from people in various Star Trek uniforms, quite often in a group on an "away mission", as well as the random Kingon or two.  Always fun to see them.  We also had a whole squad of WWII soldiers come in last year, looked like they had just come from the invasion of Normandy or something.  Great historically accurate uniforms complete with helmets, belts, pouches, canteens, backpacks, and even Thompson machine guns and Carbine rifles (non-functional, of course).  That was a real treat!

Can't wait to see what people come up with this year!

Looking forward to seeing all our old friends and making new ones this season.

Warmest Regards,

James Raley

It is so good to see you back again. :)

I'm wearing green and gold on the 7th of September (only time my husband and I can go due to the arrival of our baby daughter) at MIRF and I truly hope that people don't give me funny looks because that weekend is not the Irish weekend and those colours I'm wearing are Irish colours and my husband is wearing a green shirt with a celtic design on the top half of it. We shall see.

I need to stop visiting this thread. Every time I do, I panic. Although I am going to Derbyshire on Sunday and going to be testing out my character and playing with anyone who will do so. I know I can keep up my accent all day. I've been cursing my children in Italian and they are now used to it.

That's the way to do it, my dear.  Visiting other Faires and doing MiRF Promos is a GREAT way to test your character, develop bits, and work out any kinks. Speaking in your character's voice, especially one with a difficult accent, during your mundane life is also a terrific exercise.  From what I've seen at the Academy classes I've participated in, I think your doing great for a First Year.  I can't wait to see and interact with your character in the lanes this year!

You are most kind. I have to admit, I had a ball handing out flyers Sunday at the Strawberry festival. My son was with me, dressed as a dragon slayer. I asked the people how we knew he was so excellent a slayer. Almost everyone answered,  "No dragons." Very fun and got rid of all the flyers too. I am having more fun than is legal with your clothes on and can't wait to get out there and interact with the fairegoers and sing.

BTW, Sir William is so kind that my eldest sleeps with a small shiny glass piece he was given last year, on the promise he would one day be a knight. It means the world to that boy.

Hi everyone, just wanted to make myself known!
I'm a regular cast member at the TNRF, and will be doing the Mudskippers mud show at MIRF this year!
My name's Thorny, and I'm really, really excited. I've never been this far away from home before, and have actually never been to a festival outside of TN, let alone worked one. I can't wait to meet all of you in person. Got any tips or advice or funny stories about MIRF? Anything I should know before boarding a plane to Detroit? hehe...

On the first day, go to Mother Superior and tell her you are new. She is very helpful.

Just find the singing flower seller, me, and say hi. I can't go within a mile of a pub till after closing, but I'm even fun at funerals and although I am new too, I will introduce you to who I know. Heck, most of the cast, that I've met, are wonderful and a neat group. Anyone of them will help you out.

Welcome! I think you'll enjoy Hollygrove a lot once you get here.

One thing we do have is MUD. Yep. Lots of Mud. And when it rains, we REALLY have it-- in spades. All kinds of mud! We've got the silty, slick mud, we've got the gloopy mud that sucks at your feet, we've got nice peat mud too. The site was built on the edge of a swamp, so the back row of shops have 'waterfront' property.

Lets see... we also have lots of friendly people--including lots and lots of fun and fabulous WENCHES.

You know, if you're gonna have a Festival, you need wenches...just a fact of life.

We have a lot of great musicians at our show too.

And lest I forget, you will be performing under the auspices of the MOST WONDERFUL AND TRULY FANTASTIC ENTERTAINMENT DIRECTOR EVER. errr...not that I'm biased or anything.  ;D  (But Maria doth rock the shire, truly).

Can't wait to welcome you to our shire! Godspeed you safe in your travels!

I find that dressing garb makes it so much more fun.  Also, there's something that makes a woman more attractive when dressed in garb.   I'm not only speaking of the cleavage-o-rama outifts (although they are my favorites,  :o ;D) but the pretty dresses and all the feathers/leather/lace/etc...  Many people are much more outgoing at Faire than in mundane life, because they can always blame their behavior on their character.  Huzzah to Rennie garb, period correct or not!!
Title: Re: MIRF
Post by: nliedel on June 30, 2008, 07:49:33 PM
My cleavage has dissapeared in my dress (I lost thirty pounds between getting my part and now) and I have few frillies (Merchant class), but I feel like a princess in my dresses. I just feel lovely and sexy and so good about myself. I'm about to make dress three cause I have a sick addiction. I also spill, very sad. I wear that garb and I'm what I've always dreamed of being, beautiful. Okay, beautiful for a forty four year old broad who is the mother of four, but it's just so special to be that girly. Most of the time I'm chasing kids around the house and I'm lucky if I had time to put on something nicer than sweats.

Three dresses, fifteen days I get to wear each dress five times this fall.

I'm not excited, or anything.

Yes...Huzzah to the weight loss!!!  I'm wishing to lose weight soon so I have more excuse to make more garb.  weeeeee!!!  My daughter is sitting here laughing at the making of the third dress because you have a sick addiction.  I think what she's trying to say is that I have WAAAYYY too much garb and that if you can't stop at two you won't stop at three and well you know where that's going.  Garb addiction is such a fun thing!!!  wooohoooo!!!

So looking forward to MIRF.  I have a few visits to other faires planned between now and opening day, but something about walking the grounds of Hollygrove that just screams....HOME!!

Good for you!  I am trying to lose weight so I fit into the costume I have now.  I may have to make a new LARGER costume at the rate I'm going.

Must be the year for it.  I am down 30 as well, and up considerably in muscle, as I have been living in the gym.  Added 50 Lbs to my bench press and shoulder press, which have always given me problems.  Not anymore.

When we did production pics for The Adventures of Robin Hood last fall I took a look at me as King Richard and said "Ooooh.  Not good.  King Richard needs to look like he came from the crusades, not the Crispy Creme..." so into the gym I went.

Now, if I do say so myself, King Richard looks like he could hand you your butt in short order.

I still want to rip another 20 Lbs or so, and just bought a Cybex ARC trainer so I can get high intensity cardio without pounding my joints by running.  Plus I added a Cybex Eagle line of 6 machines to my gym, and 4 Cybex VR2 machines (I work out at home as I like playing MY music REALLY LOUD) so now my home gym is better equipped than most commercial gyms.  I can choose between free weights, Smith machine, Cybex, or dumbbells for my workouts.  Muscle confusion and all that.

Funniest thing is when people see me now I get comments like "You are lucky to be able to lose weight so easily..." and then they inhale a pizza.

And so it goes..

As I am making a new gown myself for MIRF in September, I just hope I will fit in it and that I don't have a tummy bump showing still after giving birth, I know pushing a pram (baby carriage) around the park and other places should lose me some weight, I hope.  :)

Breastfeeding burns five hundred calories a day. Seriously, it's normal to take time to take off baby weight. No one should do what those people in Hollwood do and I'm not even sure what that is, but it has to be unhealthy.

"What's the day of wrong?" the innocent new cast member asked her director.

He scowled. "It does not exist for you."

"Got it."

LOL!!

More realistically, he (I am betting I know who HE is here) should have said "You're cast.  That's everyday for you.  Now take your 1/2 a foodbook and get back into that salt mine!" <g>

So retro huh?  What day is the day of wrong?  Might be funny just to watch.  Or maybe a certain Court guy I know would loan me his JP costume, complete with shock white wig and brim.  Now me as JP, THAT would be wrong!  (I am much too tall, and I don't rent Mustangs...)

For those of you that none of this makes any sense to, don't sweat it.  For those that just fell off their chairs, you are welcome...

Teach me to post just before a workout when I just downed a handful of RPM (it's a workout stimulant, and man it WORKS!!!).

Yoinks, and AWAY!

I actually like the guy a lot, not *that* way, but he's really helped me. He did later said it was cause I am cast, so I don't want to leave the impression he's a big ole meanie weanie who hates me, or anything.

The funny thing is that I write romance (this is on my blog) and years ago one of the cast members struck me as someone who would make a great male for a book I was planning to write. I'd never spoken with him, just thought he looked right, so I wrote the book with him in miond (this means nothing. I write my romance characters for one another. I can't write them like the man I am married to.  He's blond and gentle and quiet and those types don't sell, or I would write nerds all the time) and everytime I see this guy I'm laughing my head off. 1. His character is NOTHING like the guy I wrote at all, and 2. well, it's just a funny thing to observe someone, take mental notes, write a romance about what you see and then run into him for an entire summer. I normally pick people out of a crowd and write them and no, you may not have my pen name. LOL! It would be obvious who this person is, if the book was read by someone. Fortunatly, I'm multi published and people would have to go through a lot of books to figure it out. Snort.

How flattering to have a romance character created of you.  He must be a great guy, what an honor for him.

It was from looks alone. I see people and I imagine what they're like and I write stories about them. Of course by the time I make them into the people in my head, they're very different from real life.
