Title: FYI: Pub Sing change for this season...
Post by: BeerBlessings on July 01, 2008, 10:32:09 PM

So it won't come as a complete shock to you all...

Pub Sing is not being held at Sumbull Inn this year. It is being moved to Drift Inn, to take advantage of the larger stage. More room = more musicians + not-so-cramped.

I hope I am conscience at pub sing ...

Another thing to note which was announced earlier this year is that "Health To The Company" is not going to be sung this year.  Apparently, Scott/Axel wanted to do something different.  Does this still hold true?  Dave?  Trev?

This must be so Axel doesn't have to go so far to get his Ale!!!

The Final Pub Sing will be at the Drift Inn...the parting song, appropriately enough is "Parting Glass" My only concern is the Pub area at the Drift Inn isn't as big to accommodate the amount of people that usually amasses for Pub Sing and if it rains (Nah...that NEVER happens in Ash-tab-u-la) then there is little cover offered to the patrons/cast/playtrons etc. At least the Stumball Inn had trees and that nice brick paved area...

Ahh well...I guess the important part is we are all together!  ;D

I admit, it will be weird because I'm so used to the Stumbull Inn...but like Morgan said important part is that we'll be together!

Scotsman, you'll be fine as long as no blood gets into your alcohol stream!  ;)

I don't know.  Being all squished together was one of the things I liked most about the pub sing.

Parting Glass is a reasonable substitute (we will wait for Owain for Health to the Company).

Drinting or Stumbling as our Good Captain  said we will be together....

The problems that I have with Parting Glass..

1) Just about everyone does this song slowly. (JUst search youtube and you'll see what I mean) The only version I've heard that might be appropriate is by Cleveland Irish band "Brigid's Cross", as they do it comparatively fast. From what I hear, this version is not like Brigid's Cross version. Sigh. But I reserve judgement.

The bigger problem..

2) For some odd reason, I get the heebie-jeebies by associating Faire with a song that I want sung at my funeral.

Personally...I don't visit Pub Sing until the last day of faire, so...it won't bother me much anyways. I don't care for the dirge (Parting Glass) and the new location tbh....if the Stumble Inn stage was too small, uhm...make it bigger.

However, with the R/F crowd coming in...I'll have to check it out this weekend.

Hey...the only difference between an Irish Wedding (or Pubsing/party) and an Irish Wake is one less drunk...so it's a celebration no matter what!  ;)

I still pity poor Avaloch...I fear they have no idea what is in store for them.... :o

Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend.  No matter where the pub sing is the important thing is "The pub"  and friends to share it with.

Just to throw in another opinion on something that is really of no consequence, Parting Glass IS a dirge.  The master is Tommy Makem and he does it slooooowly.

I like the band "Bridget's Cross" and have played the same stage with them several times but they (pardon the pun) crucify Parting Glass.  If they did it that way at my funeral, it would be like Finnegan's Wake all over again.  I'd be up and out of the coffin yelling at them without the benefit of "whiskey flyin' around like blazes".

I always liked Mingulay Boat Song or Aulde Lang Syne (Sterling Ren. Faire version)...but "Parting Glass" even tho' some view it as a "dirge" is still moving and has sentiments justified for the end of a day with friends....Whatever the song be, we shall sing it together... ;)

Don't know if it has been mentioned.
But the cast are supposed to be part of the performance ofthe song also.

(at least last I knew)

It is also much harder to roam the crowd and clink glasses with friends and strangers alike during Parting Glass.  But so be it.  It will be that much more meaningful when we do it in Morelandshire two months later.

I meant "appropriate" as in "appropriate for an ending to a good faire day"... Nothing so slow and so dang depressing.

Oh, and Parting Glass at Faire only includes two of the three verses. Forgot to mention that part..

I must say, the Pub Sing was a big disappointment on opening day.  The sound system at the Drift Inn couldn't handle it.  We sat near the back and couldn't hear a thing, except for the occasional drumming.  Bustahoov3 posted a video that was taken from the back of the seats, and it illustrates just that.  You can see people dancing, but other than an occasional Bump...Bump there's no music.

The cast did a great job with Parting Glass.  My preferences aside, it was a fine, touching ending to the day.

I'm sure they'll have the sound issues worked out eventually, and I look forward to going back and enjoying a hearty, and audible, pub sing.

Yeah, the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully they'll get that worked out soon....

Well, they turned the volume up on pub sing, and it was much better.
People were really starting to get into it, then the rains came . . . again!

The faire got drenched yesterday for about an hour +
Started right after chess match and just poured.

Then it cleared up and wasn't bad until the middle of pubsing.

Post by: Athena on July 13, 2008, 04:45:11 PM
Oh yeah, we got drenched. The weather man said the storms would roll in later on in the evening. RIGHT. When I got on I271 yesterday it was clear and sunny. The road was wet, so it looks like that front went through Summit & Cuyahoga counties before reaching the faire.

Nice improvement on sound, hopefully the weather will be agreeable next week so we can enjoy pub sing.

Looks like I missed a nice day today.
It rained in the morning, but then cleared out and was sunny and cool the rest of the day.
At least here in Conneaut, that is how the weather was.
Still waiting on word of how the faire day was though.

We got there about 2pm today and by then the weather was perfect.

The parking lot was a muddy mess.  They filled the secondary lots first and when we got there we got parked real close to the gate.  The lanes had puddles and a few small lakes, but other than that it was a great day for faire.

it was muddy, and drizzeled a bit in the morning....but was a great day overall.  Weather was perfect.  Sunny and  breezy and not to humid.

I missed pubsing...again.  because I was shopping and yes at the other pub.  Ah well someday this season...lol

Dude! We had our own Pub Sing...remember??

Actually...at Maryland there are 2 Pub Sings...one at the Dragon's Lair and one at the White Hart and believe me...there are more than enough patrons/playtrons to fill up both venues...the hard part is...do you listen to Pyrates Royale OR The Rogues....now that is the hard part!

There seem to be several ways to experience "Pub Sing".  I have seen Pub Sing at 3 different faires. Although I enjoyed all 3, I think Pittsburgh will always be my favorite.  At Great Lakes and Maryland, its a recap of all the entertainers performing on stage.  At Pittsburgh it feels more like singing around a campfire without the campfire.  It's intimate and close up.  There is no stage because the performers are right in the middle of the crowd.  There is no amplification because the music is happening right next to you.  Everyone sings along to all the songs and it feels like everyone is a part of the event instead of a stage with performers and an audience.

I just looked at several pictures on my web site from 2004.  http://www.pittsburghirish.org/griffith/photos/renfest04/index.htm (http://www.pittsburghirish.org/griffith/photos/renfest04/index.htm)
Pictures 1,2,3,5,6,7,16 & 17 are the Pub Sing back then.  Some of you may recognize many people that are no longer at the faire.  Check them out and remember the feeling of that Pub Sing compared to the others and even the Pub Sing at Pittsburgh now.  Those were the days my friends.

Not dissing my Home Faire...but Sterling Ren. Faire had/has the ultimate Pub Sing IMHO and anyone who's ever commanded the pile of rocks with us during "Companion" knows this to be true. What I loved about Sterling is they had several "Pub Sings" throughout the day where one could actually learn the songs. The Nobles Pub Sing at noon was with the Court and all the "proper" songs of the time..."The Keeper", "Spanish Ladies" and such...then around 3 O'clock you'd stumble across the gypsies and thieves in the graveyard and learn all the bawdy songs "Maids when you're young", "Bedlam Boys", "Wild Rover", "Companion" and such...which would culminate with the final closing Pub Sing...the cast interspersed throughout the crowd as the Queen and Court would take the stage, the cast interjecting songs which might begin with Sir Walter Raleigh wanting to sing "Bonny Ship the Diamond" (reference changed to Elizabethan times) which then flows into Don Juan and Miguel introducing "Spanish Ladies" and then the Pub Sing gets totally hijacked by the rowdy faction and we rapidly slip into the foot stomping, bawdy songs until it is announced that the Pubs are about to close...smooth segue into the Queens parting speech and Auld Lang Syne...and believe me, no one did it as well as Baj! What I didn't learn from an awesome Irish singer, Dermot Sommerville...I learned at Sterling...

I'm pretty sure it has. I like "Beggars to God" just as much. Empty Hats performed it last weekend and it was just as poignant as Health. I really hope they come back next year, along with Demetrius and Victoria, the other half of the group.

Sunday's pub sing was excellent! Looney Lucy graced us with one of her dances and brought the house down! Gods I adore that woman!  ;D

I'm glad they changed it back.  I find health to the company so much easier to sing, and a lot less depressing.  We were only able to come Saturday last week.  It sounds like we missed a great pub sing on Sunday.  This week we can only make it Sunday and it will be the last week we can come this year :'(. I so hate to see the season come to a close.  On a positive not though we are bringing 4 friends with us who have never been to a faire before.  It should be a lot of fun.

I missed Pub sing again...Damn! I am going to have to will myself away from and make pubsing this weekend...and finale.

While I have been enjoying our impromtu sing-a-longs at Stumbull, it is just not the same as seeing everyone on stage together
