You must attend! We are almost through August! But only a few faire weekends left!! LOL

I know what you mean though, the cost does add up quickly - Every now and then I see someone who is pretty drunk and all I can think to myself -- "Man did that person get drunk at $6 a glass? How much did they spend!" LOL

I'm always up for hanging out with anyone who wants to wander the faire though and I'm there every weekend!

This Saturday I want to catch the rest of Brother Donalds story , I was only able to hear 3 of them before my friend got restless sitting on the wood benches and wanted to walk around some more.

were you there on Sunday..we got there around noon..late for us. it was a relaxing day..

did you like the pub sing on Sat? the 3 pints shy reunion was a lot of fun. they were a big hit for the past few years.

we might be heading to rhode island this weekend, so we will miss the faire if we do. but we will be there the following weekend.

Yes 3 pints shy - I heard a lot about them , so it was great to see them.   The singing was good I always enjoy it.   My friend Ana might not go this weekend either, she has family obligations on Long Island but I'll see if I can pry her to come on out ( Her husband hates anything like this so he won't ever come out, but she seems to like it ) - I had managed to rope her into it once before and she discovered she really liked it.  Though she didn't care for the hard wooden benches LOL!!!

I did however have a great time chatting "in character" with Brother Benedict and Brother Francis, and a couple of others who ran into me.

A lot of people seemed to think I was part of the cast and kept asking for directions so I had to keep politely telling them I'm not part of the show LOL

Now I don't know about going in garb ALONE I think that would be too weird.  Dressing alone, walking into the faire alone, and wandering around dressed up without anyone you know to chit chat with, makes me feel a little strange. So I may forgo the outfit if I'm on my own.

well, i really liked the robe you had on and think you should always go to faire in it! :) that is pretty neat that you stayed in character. i've yet to do that. i  guess i am lazy.

isn't if funny when people mistake you for working there.

if plans don't pan out for this weekend, we will prob. go on Sunday.

has Ana's husband ever been to the faire?

Thanks! I thought it was the easiest way to start out since it will take me a while to put together a more elaborate thing.     I only managed to stay in character while chatting with the Monks, but I have seen people stick to it the whole faire day! Now thats resolve! I can't keep doing it after a while I always revert, plus since the person I go with isn't in garb its hard to maintain the illusion for me.

I don't know if he has gone, originally when I said I would be going I asked if she and the family wanted to come join me - I figured her kids would really love it. But it turns out her husband hates this kind of thing, one of her sons is working and the other is in Florida, so it was just her that managed to get out here.

And if you don't go, I'm sure I will be there somewhere! I want to go all 3 days for the Labor day weekend. I have to make use of the season pass or I will have wasted money lol

that is sad that ana's husband hates "this kind of thing"  . hmmm..does he do anything fun with her? i hope so..she seems really nice.

be forewarned..the labor day weekend is packed. last year was miserable b/c of the crowds. we went that sunday. i saw kids getting knocked in the face by elbows and cameras being swung into people du to lack of elbow room..seriously..you coud not even see the road at times..crazy..great for business, but not fun at all. we found an empty table and just sat in one spot all day! :)

Not really. Ana and I used to work at the same company a few years back. I ended moving to Jersey and she is still on Long Island but we've always stayed in touch and once in a while we'll meet up to do something, sometimes with her kids sometimes not - and in all those years ( I'd say maybe 7-10 years? ) I have never seen the guy and he has never wanted to meet us or come do anything with us. So.. not sure.  But I'm happy I can get her out of the house and she can have a good time at the faire. Plus I'm slowly converting her to a Renny too! LOL!

Oh really? Labor day is that bad? That doesnt sound fun at all.. plus where the heck would you park it must be jammed to the gills.  And getting food must be impossible with the lines of people?   I hate huge crowds.  If it's that packed I might just skip it then.

Also what do you do after the NYRF is over?  Does your outfit go in the closet for a full year until next time? Or do you travel to other faires?

Well in my case it is the short trip to Cloisters, which is usually the Sunday after the end of the Tuxedo run. After that it can be a little interesting as to where to go. I did one year (2004) go south to Charlotte (Carolina). The only thing to be careful of, is don't try to go opposite race weekend.
As for closer, there is Maryland, Penn, Connecticut, and Richard's within four hours of NYC and all have dates into October.

Before I get to that point, it is looking like Labor Day weekend for me and m'Lady. The only thing that is not fun is that we don't drive and Hate Having to Car Service From the Hotel. The eighty bucks a day has a better use. (Feeding the bees turkey legs come to mind, but....) Anyway, if anyone is coming Labor Day weekend, feel free to drop Matty Pine Brownie a PM and maybe something useful could come of it.

depending on money, we go to the PA faire for one visit in Oct.

this year we are hoping to go to King Richards..which would be our first visit there.

in May, we do the Mayfaire in New Paltz, which is very close to us.

again, if money permits, there is also the CT faire in Hebron.

our goal is to visit a new faire every year, but with the gas prices, it has put a damper on things.

lord robert. yes, the lines are crazy, but if you get there early enough you can get preferred parking and tailgate. you could always hang out with Brother Donald in the back :) Labor day itself is a lot of fun, though and not as busy as the weekend of.

Hm this is my first Faire and already I'm wondering what I'm going to do all those months without one! LOL!   I will have to see if there are other events going on that can tide me over until next year.

Meanwhile I started reading Shakespeare - which I had avoided all through school LOL - and picked up a couple of self-training CDs / books on the lingo of the time. So hopefully I at least understand what these people are saying because when you are brand spanking new it takes a while! LOL!

ahhh..shakespeare! my favorite! there is a line of books called "no fear shakespeare" with the old english on one side and the new english on the page next to it. it is great for understanding what is being said. about 5.00 at barnes and noble. that is great that you are pursuing this new interest. it is wonderful to keep learning! i think we appreciate learning much more as we age. good luck with Will ! :)

you will def. go through faire withdrawal! it is so sad....

I should be going tomorrow with my two children.  I have to find out when they are coming back from Disney with their Mom.  If I get them tonight, we'll get the garb ready and be there early.  Guess I should get some pictures up so y'all know what we look like, (Damn the rat bastards who screwed with the last place).  We dress kind of like Men and little woman of the wood, with lots of grommets.  Hope to see people there.

Excellent - hope to you see you there. I plan to be there at the opening gate. One of my goals tomorrow is to find this Friends of Faire group and see if its something I'd like to do.

Jay that was a great outfit I have to say! Even the kids were decked out, it was fantastic ! LOL!

Insane? Never. Nothing can be more insane than even thinking of trying Charlotte against Race Weekend.

(leaving the soapbox )

I am going this weekend. I don't really care that it is Labor Day Weekend, but it is logistically the best one. The weather at first draft promises to be better Sunday than Saturday.

The exercise that is my challenge is going sans car for a full weekend experience. I have done this twice before with my Mrs.

The one thing that has been lacking is others to travel with. The hotel is a good thing, however, the last leg of the journey from hotel to site is something that screams 'there has to be a better way.'

Anyone going from the City Labor Day Weekend?

Hm, well I am going Labor Day weekend but I am in NJ. However, I have a friend who is coming from Long Island. She is going into NYC ( Port Authority ) and taking a bus from there to NJ.  I'm meeting at the bus stop and driving the rest of the way from there.

So what is your plan? Where is the hotel you are going to?

Well, we are not as expensive as Sandlers or Catskill but our better boots start around $200 and go to $350. Sandlers and Catskill have wonderful and beautiful boots too and can custom make them for your calf / foot if you desire, but they are costly. Stop in and I'll be happy to give you a hand or any information you might desire.

Honestly I have been looking at boots online, those tall suede ones run for $68 but I'm not sure how Historically correct those are.   Then I was looking at some medieval boots online in the $158 range. Right now I'm just wearing some Roman Sandals which works well with the garb.

Ultimately I'd like to get some boots or shoes that are at least passable for the time period, though considering I will only wear them during the Faire I'm not compelled to crazy with something very fancy or expensive.

And I think I went through Renboots once or twice not really sure now - and for some reason I kept thinking they were motorcyle boots lol!!

I will make a point to stop in and say Hi and take a closer look though!

So what is your plan? Where is the hotel you are going to?
-Robert of Essex

Friday out/monday back  it is take subway/path/njt to ramsey route 17 and from there get to the hotel which is the doubletree hotel about a mile and a half north on 17, just south of 202.

Where me and the Mrs. run into some trickiness is getting from the doubletree to site. The goal is trying to avoid having to car service up and back both weekend days. Don't know if you or anyone you know is staying in the hotel. If so, coordinating breakfast buffet, and the trip to site would absolutely Rock!

Hm, alright. Do you plan to stay the full faire day?

I have a friend coming in on Saturday and my routine is that I go pick her up from the bus, and take the Garden State north to 17, then follow 17 up, etc etc.

So my planned route means I would pass by your hotel - so assuming everyone is ontime etc, maybe we could detour and do a pick up?  Only thing is you'd kind of be at our mercy because I usually try to stay the full faire day and leave after the pub sing.. if that is not an issue I can ask and see if she is ok with that idea?   Everyone can go do their thing and we can plan to meet at the gate at the end of the day or something like that.   I'm also going on Sunday ( though don't think she is going that day ) and plan to go Monday as well.

Let me know your thoughts..

Hm, alright. Do you plan to stay the full faire day?
- Mornings, this would be our first attempt to make opening gate. I know that this likely means 9-9:15 meeting at the hotel. We tend to arrive closer to 11, but that is strictly because we were going it alone.
As far as a time to leave is concerned. We have never stayed till closing for this faire. We have historically started for the gate close to 6:30pm.  However, we also were not traveling with anyone. We are grateful either way. Whether it is coming, or coming and going. It is more than we thought we might have and better than we could have hoped for.
We thank you for your offer and any help you can provide. We look forward to sharing the journey with you, and your friend.

In that case, Saturday let's plan for 9-9:15 at the Hotel. I think the Hotel is on the South side of 17 so I have to turn around and come back the other way to get you then we can resume the trip.

I'll PM you my cell # so we can coordinate Saturday. I expect to be on the road by 8-8:30am ( having to pick up my friend first ).

Sunday, I'm planning to go for opening gate as well, but I will probably leave early because my friend must be back on Long island before 5pm so we might cut out around 2pm or so.

If you find an alternate means back to the hotel from the faire, then thats fine, otherwise we will be heading back after the pub sing. But we can hammer out the details on the way up.

I haven't been yet this season! I went once last year and had a lot of fun.

I live in NYC and was curious if anyone was getting a group together at some point in the following weekends. I am away over the long Labor Day weekend.

The only thing is that a full day kind of seems like a lot ... but who knows, I can be flexible.

I go every weekend I'm able. The only one I won't make is this coming Saturday because I'm on vacation ( Which was booked before I knew about the Faire at all ). I'm hoping to get back from Vegas by Saturday night and get to the faire in the morning - the hitch is picking up my dog early sunday morning and getting down to the Faire before the gate opens, I don't think I'll pull it off and will end up getting there around lunch time - thus losing my favorite parking space!

That being said though, I don't know where you are coming from, but if it's from NYC  and you can get to Willowbrook Shopping mall, I can detour and pick up.  But I do not drive an SUV nor do I have lots of trunk space - so while I'm willing to help out by picking someone up, its only assuming you don't have any special needs or are lugging a lot of baggage.  I had offered someone else a hand but later discovered they were bringing equipment that would not fit in our car at all so it didn't work out.

If it's just you and a normal sized bag, let me know.  The 195, 197, 191, 192 buses all go from Port Authority to Willowbrook mall. I think it costs you $10.50 round trip.

Yikes! What a long weekend. Saturday was slow in the store and gate was pretty low so I left the shoppe at 2:00 p.m. as I couldn't take the slowness. I suspect that the weather report of rain and thunderstorms kept people away, but the day turned out to be damn nice anyway. After I left the store I hung out around Mattie's Tavern and talked to friends most of the rest of the day and drank mead *slurp*. Sunday was so busy that I ended up NEVER getting out of the booth, except for Privy breaks. I ended up working from 8:00 in the morning until 8:00 at night. We had one customer who came back unsure of his purchase. Unfortunately he came back just at 7:00 as we were shutting the doors to the booth. He ended up keeping the boots he got though, but it did take him 15 minutes to come to a firm decision. As for Monday...WOW. What a day at faire! The place was packed with so many people that I was able to get away for around 20 minutes just to clear my head, but I had a hard time going anywhere with all the danes! We were steady in the booth, but not so busy to make ones head spin, though I wish we had been busier and had more sales (I'm never satisfied!  ;)), but all in all I guess it wasn't too terrible. As for the weather on Sunday and Monday, well it was just perfect and I'm happy for the faire and awesome gate numbers on both Sunday and Monday.

I will say that doing faire and working faire 3 days in a row is very exhausting and though our crew is generally great together all of us were feeling a bit short in the temper and tolerance area by days end. I know that my patience had simply worn thin too. I blame it on the fact that my feet were simply killing me from standing up 13 hours the day before.

We stayed in the Howard Johnson's Hotel in Suffern. It's OK as far as hotels go and close to faire so it was good that we didn't have to travel the near 2 hours back to home at the end of each day.

Next week I hope to actually get out of the booth for a bit as the week after that I have to be there from open to close. Talk about your long days! So, PLEASE stop in and see me.

Warmly,
Lady Double D

Lady Double D..sounds like a VERY long weekend for you! I was there on Sat but left early b/c the humidity got the best of me. I don't usually go on the Sunday or Monday of Labor day due to the crowds. I feel as you do though, I am glad that the faire has a high attendance, I just don't want to be in it! :)

I will be there next couple of Sats. and the last Sunday. I will stop in to say hi. LF

It was a fun experience Monday, let me tell you. The back of the faire seems the best spot - out there by the Maypole - the crowds thin out over there. But that front end - I suspect a lot of people don't realize the faire continues on to the back or something lol. The few who stopped me for directions were shocked to learn there was even MORE to the faire if they kept walking.

I still have to stop in, so many things were distracting me I never got to stop in and I walked by RenBoots a few times and kept thinking I should go inside - though it looked busy and I didn't want to upset potential sales by distracting people with chit chat.

I wonder how everyone did sales wise - with so many people on  Monday it must have been a great profit day!

I spent a lot of time in the shade with a drink ( Lemonade ) LOL

I'm not so sure that the performers were plastered, though as it's against the rules for the performers to drink while being "on duty", not to mention dangerous for them as well. It's more likely that they were playing a drunk. I know that one of the jousters does a pub sing with the wench singers where he acts very drunk, when what is actually in his mug is water.

I can assure you, not one of the paid performers were "plastered".  It is strickly forbidden in our contract and grounds for instant dismissal.

The 'drunk' captain who does the wedding for the Sheriff is funny as hell, I love that guy lol  ;D

Glad that this worked out - it was good meeting you. I'm happy to know you had a good time at the Faire! Hopefully I got you back to the bus on time? Or did you have to wait?

Robert,
It was a pleasure meeting you this year at faire. My only regret is that I really didn't have enough time to sit and chat or have a drink or two with you. I hope to see you again at faire.
Blessings,
Maddie

The honor and pleasure was all mine! Yes, it is too bad we didn't have much time to really get to chat, though that means we'll have more to talk about at our next meeting!  ;D

I also did not want to linger too long in the shop as I didn't want you to lose any potential sales as a result of me taking up your time with stuff. Next time around I'll have to coordinate with you better, come see you at break time or some such.

It was great to meet you though and I'm looking forward to next time! In fact I am told there some FoF thing possibly in January? So I might encounter you at one of those.

The FOF thing you speak of in January is The Burns Dinner, which is at the home of our beloved FOF President's house. If you have not done so you should join the FOF yahoo group. Most announcements will be found there.

In December, I am having a holiday open house which everyone in FOF is invited too. Hopefully we'll have a good amount of people coming over. Consider yourself invited. I sent out a Save the Date on the NY Rennies and FOF yahoo group, however, maybe I should send it out here too.
The party is going to be on December 13 from 12:00 noon to whenever and will be held in Phillipsburg, NJ. (it's at the end of the world).

The Burns Dinner! Yes! Steve was talking about it at the FoF garden on Sunday. I want to go to that.

And a party in December you say? Well..that sounds good too!

FOF membership is $30. Well it was this year anyway, who knows for next year. It's a place to meet people, eat, rest, relax and store your things while parading around the faire. We bring a couple of chairs so that when it's really hot and miserable we can go back and rest. There is also food to be found as well. Generally members will bring goodies in for sharing. There is a pot luck picnic held once during the faire season in the FoF Garden, as well as an overnight camp out (generally held the same weekend as the Participant Party). Through the year there is generally one or two get togethers. Debra's Burns dinner is one of those events and is usually coupled with a general FoF meeting as well. Though our Holiday Open House is not specifically an FoF event, everyone is invited to attend if they wish. If you would like to come to the Holiday Party, consider yourself invited Chuck. I will post a save the date in a seperate post with some information. Later there will be a website to give a general rsvp as well as driving directions and such.

Warmly,
Maddie

You should consider it - I came into the faire world the first time ever this year. I liked it so much I wanted to get more involved and meet others who shared the same interest, thus I joined FoF. My circle of friends as a result has expanded a lot. Not to mention all the fun opportunities like helping the cast to get the crowds to cheer, etc etc
