It's a tradition, not only for RFers but many from the Royal Guard, and other playtrons who gather pre-Cannon, every weekend.
Will you be hosting a meet and greet the second weekend? we are traveling from the midlands(Iowa) and would like to meet others.
Every morning there is an impromptu sort of meet-n-greet in the Friends of Faire parking row.
And I think we've collectively settled on meeting around the Dirty Duck Pub after the Parade! It's shady and near food and a pub...who could ask for more? :)

Belly Dancers? ;D ;)
Picky picky! I'm sure we could accommodate "bring your own belly dancer"!
I enjoyed being at the DD as well Lady Kett. All that shade will be a big relief as the weather gets warmer.
Where was everyone today?
I saw a few but couldn't find many that I was seeking.
MacKees?
I saw Angus...who I have to say looks much younger in person than he does on this forum.
I saw McIntyre... Queen Bonnie... a couple others... but many were invisible today.
What a great day though.... the weather was awesome! I almost want to start a new thread but I wont.... but the new guy "FIRE WHIP" ... Oh My GAWD! People... you have to see this guy... he's only here for the first 4 weeks.... sooooo that means he will be here for Rendezvous. He holds either 6 or 8 Guinness Book of world records.... his show is UNREAL! Really good stuff!
Anyhoooo... I'll be at NASCAR next weekend but I will see everyone at Rendezvous.
I was at the opening day. It was so neat to see most of you. I spotted the Merlin; I would have said hi, but I really didn't know what to say since I only lurk here....

Well, when I saw you as Merlin last year, I thought "man, I bet he scares the little ones, but that's really cool garb!" Then I finally got to meet you both days this weekend, and you
were very friendly both times, and yes, you
are likable person :)

Don't feel bad, Merlin... i posted a picture of myself, on the McLot site and kinda got the same response... of course to see me in the picture, you had to look past the open bore of a 12 gauge... :o ;D
Well the Pink Pirate and I were there early and went over to the scottish flags, and were imediatlly given a look of "eat crud and die" either people mistook us for someone else, or something. I saw a few people but we may just try to get there even earlier and see who we can meet. We want to do a cannon to cannon this next weekend. We rarely get to do that.

We saw you from a distance Lady. We also went up to a couple of groups that looked at us like we were poison, but we've got that from select groups before. Most faire folke are friendly and welcoming and watch out for "new blood" to make them feel comfortable and welcoming. As a student of sociology I have my ideas as to why some groups aren't as friendly, but that's a whole other topic.
I have to say that when I am with a group of rennies it is the most comfortable I can feel. And yeah most rennies are good people. We had a laugh at a McDonalds when we got breakfast. The truck in front of us had rennies in it, and then us. Needles to say the cashiers were a little freaked but ok. What made it more funny was that when we parked , that truck was right next to us. We even chatted about the places lack of service. ;D
EDIT: BTW if you see us but we don't see you, yell at us.
Same here. Give us a yell if you see us. It is cool when driving down on Saturday morning, coming in on 287 from Ft. Worth, and waving at all the pre-garbbed folks.
We drove down on Saturday morning and the folks at the McDonald's in Decatur did the same thing. It's really funny to think what they were wondering. I had a guy at a gas stop last year ask me if I was in a Lord of the Rings play at the college or something (in Gainesville). I told him where we were going, but sometimes I just want to say something like "i'm a time traveler from the 16th century, can you tell me the way to the jousting arena?"
See you at the Faire!

LOL! THAT was thanks to our Order Brother, Richard, Lord of Ballzack. He gets bored, he photoshops... i seem to be his favorite target but some of it's justified considering the hell I've given him since before TRF last year.

Just an added note - those of us in the parking usually wander over to the gate by about 9:30-9:45. So you might not see us in the parking lot if you don't arrive before then.
If it is after 9:30 check by the gate first, and THEN go hunting for you if you are not there yet. Sounds reasonable. We didn't get there until 9:40-45 ish Saturday which may explain why we didn't see many of you.

We came sliding in a little late Saturday (about 11) so we missed the chance to say hello in the parking area, but made it early Sunday and was able to meet quite a few folks. We will be there for openin' gate on Saturday this weekend, but likely will only make it for that one day.
Two more days! I'm almost as excited as I was before opening.
We'll see you on Saturday morning!!
We are headed to the castle with the big silver dragon and headed to Scarby - see you all at faire!!
Yanno, I just went back and read the original post...and Dona mentions the 3rd/4th row. While it *IS* the 3rd/4th row if you're local and familiar, it is technically labelled as row 12.
Just thought if we had out of towners not familiar with the set up of the rows, they might be horribly confused looking for us over at the other end of the parking lot!
We should be there around 9am
If I get there early enough (8:30ish), I may wander over before treading on in to the BDT booth. Since I am performing, I have to be at BDT dressed & ready to go by about 9am so we can make the performer meeting. :-\

Is it safe to assume (I know, never really "safe") that most folks will be traveling in caravan out to the fest grounds in the morning? I'd hate to get there and not find the breakfast. I've been thinking about the mimosas for 2 weeks now! ;)

I just would like to clarify something real quick... There are a couple of groups with Scottish flags. We are one of them. We are always on Row 12 near the front and the flags are on a red truck with a black truck parked next to it. There's usually a huge gaggle of people - mostly, but not all, Scots. The black truck belongs to my husband and I and tends to be the center of the gaggle. If it was our group you encountered, I find it hard to believe any of them would've looked at you, or anyone else, in that manner, and if it was perceived as such, I'm positive it was not intended that way.
EVERYONE is always welcome to join our gaggle of rabble. Most of us are running crazy getting dressed, having various conversations about multiple topics and drinking is involved, LOL! If you are going to be attending this closing weekend, please stop by the black truck and ask for Lady Aislinn. I'll make a point to stop dressing - since that's usually what I'm doing - and bid you warm welcome and apologies for anything that may or may not have happened and/or been misunderstood.
3rd - 4th Row from the left, (Row 11 or Row 12 with a thank you to Lady Kett) depending on traffic, there will be a pre-cannon meet and greet.
Look for all the vehicles parked close to the gate with all the flags, mostly Scottish ones.
This is the same group that Aislinn O'Farrell is referring to. We drive a gold Saturn and usually are parked next to Sir Patrick's white truck with King Pin Enterprises on it.
The parking area is FOF only but even if you can't park there you can walk by on your way to the gate.
Come by and say 'hi' and join the party.
At what time do these pre-cannons tend to begin?
8:00am.
Well last week it was 7:40am but that was sheer accident.
We are going to take it easy this weekend and meander in sometime after opening cannon. Are we still meeting up at The Dirty Duck for R/F meet and greet after parade? That is a great spot, lots of shade :)

Its a little early, but if you are going to the FOF preview event, take a couple of minutes to scope out rows 11 & 12 so you know where to find everyone before cannon on opening day.
If you are not going to the preview event, rows 11 & 12 are almost the furthest from the FM.
Here's to a fun 2011 season!
The PP and I are going to do our best to be there for opening canoon on opening day this year! Whoo hoo!
The hole Clan will be there!! (if it ever gets here!) ;D
I'm gonna try but I can't make any guarantees now, since we're two months out.
But if I have my FoF pass, I will be out Opening morning, at about 8:15 or so in the FoF parking lot, bouncing around.

It's not. It's made from pure heaven.
There is a really tasty oatmeal stout out there that I have also heard called "breakfast in a can" but I have not heard that Guiness is made from oatmeal.
I friggin LOVE me some oatmeal stout !
Finally, son, we agree on something. As far as I'm concerned, the darker the better on beer. Stouts are top of my list. I used to brew stouts and ales (the easiest to home-brew) for myself and my bandmates. I did an Irish stout once that knocked everyone on their arses after two bottles. I really should start doing that again. It would make for some interesting tailgates at Scarby....
Merlin, please do :) I still say some of the best homebrews are made in the hills and valley's of the Ozark and Arkansas Moutains. ::Hides the bottles of her grandfather's 'wine'::
I won't mention the `shine Brier Patch Charlie allowed me to sample a couple weeks ago...but it sure was tasty!
To properly get some home brew ready, it might be too late for Scarby's opening, this year anyway. It's been 15 years since I brewed, but I still have my recipe book and notes. I would have to replace some of the hardware it takes. But, that really would make for a nice tailgate!
Yes...that shine was nice.
Remember for opening day we will be bringing a chocolate cake to share with everyone.
Who all will be there for opening?

Ah, another home brewer. Why am I not surprised you used to brew, Merlin? :) I've been home brewing (on and off) since the late 80s and like you, took close to 15 years off to raise kids, etc. Well, the kids are grown and out of the house so I've started up again. I'd almost forgotten how much fun it is! Have a batch of bitter conditioning now and plan on brewing a porter next weekend. You should start up again, Merlin. What the heck!

I hear that week 2 is going to be the funnest week.... so make sure to be there for pre-canon meet and greet on week 2.... I'll have mimosas ! ! !

Yes, it will be nice to roam the fair grounds with you once again Merlin ;D
I hung out with your "dad" at Sherwood opening weekend... ;) I can see the family resemblance...kind of :o
Just for that insult, MacKee, you can buy the next two rounds! ;D
Insult because there is a resemblance? :o
Regardless...you buy... i'm a scot remember ;)
Oh yeah...none of that light beer I saw you drinking enjoying at Sherwood either ??? :D ;D
** cough ** cough ** Light beer? Me? That ain't gonna happen. There was a light beer in my hand for a few moments...it was the one I bought for you. I'll buy you a beer alright, MacKee...but you better not turn your back on me before I hand it to you, ya scurvy dog! :D
You and Bonnie going to be up for opening weekend? I'm trying to get an accurate count on how many pins and voodoo dolls to bring down. 8)
Hmmm, sure, Bon bon and I will be there opening weekend...wouldn't miss it. But I must advise you wizard...voodoo doesn't work on scots...just so you know :o ;D :D ;)
Ack, I never turn my back on a beer brother ;D
See you there then, laddie.
Did someone say Mimosa's for breakfast?? ;D
Merlin, let us know what we can bring for the traditional bread breaking event on opening weekend.
Bonny, you'll have to help me out on this...I'm not at all familiar with all the traditions. We've learned a couple of things from the Don and Doña, but we still pretty clueless, which makes it hard for us to organize the "party." So, talk to me, Luv!
It's a pretty typical tailgate. Beer, Wine, Liquor, Mimosas, munchies, even coffee. The thing that sets it apart from other, more mundane tailgates is the time of day (starts around 8:30 AM or earlier) and most of us show up half dressed! Try THAT at a football game! :) [that was NOT meant as a challenge!!!]
The best part is the people! :-*
The last part I knew... the great people! But if you could believe this, I've never been to a football tailgate. Three major reasons: 1) the team that plays in Little Rock, I can't stand (Razorbacks); 2) the school where I work is in a dry county, and it would be imprudent for me to drink on campus; and 3) I could give a rat's patootie for football anyway. The last game I went to was the first year I was married, nearly 4 decades ago.
But Mimosas, or Bloody Marie's, or coffee with Irish Cream sounds wunderbar!
But don't forget.... week 2 is going to be the best ever! !
WEEK 2 ! ! !

I'm sorry Merlin, I was directing my post to the youngster lol. But now I see he is going to be at that place where he watches cars go round and round in a circle. Must be some kind of strange spell.... :D
Since it's "that" time of year, I've had more than my fair(e) share of Irish Coffees. I would really like to find someplace on the way from Dallas to Scarby (as in, I35) that I could stop and get one of those boxes of coffee. The Starbucks in Waxahachie doesn't do boxes - at least they didn't last year. Does anyone know of a good place for such, north of Scarby yet close? If we get it close to home it will be cold by the time we get there (50 min drive).
I'd LOVE to have my own little Irish Coffee bar set up in the back of the Escape!
Not sure which way you come to Scarby, but by going to starbuck's website I found that there are several locations on 35 as you go south, and with in 30 minutes of the faire.
I'd say call them and find out if they do the boxes, and if so put in an order for the morning of. That way they have it hot and waiting for you when you get there opening day. Just a thought.
I35 & Pleasant Run (851 N I-35E-SR DeSoto, TX 75115 972-223-4934)
I tried to find a Dunkn Donuts but the closest one is 40 miles away from faire.
Thanks LadyStitch! We'll check out the DeSoto one on opening day and if its a no go, we'll figure out a Plan B.
YEA !!!!!!

So If I bring beer (with chocolate cake?) for the opening day party for MacKee, Merlin etc. what is the consensus on the brew?
I need to bring something, but Ellis County is pretty dry! If I can figure out just how to pack four people for four days AND a big ice chest for "goodies," I'll be happy to pack a selection of drinks. Let me work on that aspect....Chocolate cake and stout...Hmmm! I'd like to find some kriek stout...that would be lovely with chocolate cake!!
I have a nice bottle of Jack Daniels Single Barrel with Merlin's name on it for opening weekend.

Merlin, I think they just voted last year to allow alcohol sales, so you're not nuts! :) (At least non on THAT front...)
Thank you for your support, Kett....I think... :D
For those of us who may not make it out there quite that early, will there be any Opening day meet and great inside of faire?
Ahh...slackers...McFly family? ;)
I think the traditional gathering place/time is at the Dirty Duck at the end of the parade. The D.D. is at the south end of the shire. One of the area regulars would be better to answer or confirm that, though.
It was the Dirty Duck last year which is right next to the FOF booth closest to the Chess Field. Unless someone has strong objections I suppose we can plan on that again.
Tink, want to start a thread?
If no one has already done so, then Id be happy to.
This is a fairly old thread so I was just wondering if everyone is still meeting to mingle in the mornings? Is it just Saturday or both days that you meet up?
I'll be there memorial day weekend but won't be there early enough on Saturday but is really love to meet some of you if you'll be there. :)

Huzzah! I'm actually going to try to be there around 8:45 or so :)
It seems that Lady Gryphon will be bringing scones.
The weather is cooprating
looks like its going to be a great closing weekend.
Scones are made, Carriage is 99% PACKED. Lord Dragon is sleeping so he can drive all night. I'll sleep in the carriage on the way.
Weather Underground.com calls for 92 during the day 72 at night and a slight breeze, no rain, and partly cloudy skys. Should be a great day, I'll have sunscreen in the carriage when we arrive if anyone needs any.
See you all Saturday Morn.
Ya'll drive careful now, Ya hear?
You tell the Lord to drive carefully as well. Wish we were coming! :'(
92°, huh? helluva lot cooler than last year! Sunday and Monday are supposed to be cooler than the 92°, so it should be nice. Have a great time!
Yes, I had to endure the smells of fresh made english scones all day wafting from the kitchen....and can haz NUN.
*Pouty Face*
Leavin out in a short bit, wish you were comin too, Sir Merlin. :-\
With caffeine as my co-pilot, we shall ride like ze wind.... ;D
It's going to be grrrrreat !
Have a good time, son...have an ale for me! We will see you at RenDezvous!
Some day we will make it to the pre-cannon meet/greet.
You do realize that it is in the morning right?

Yes sir...you will. Let me know if you guys want to do the Cog train on Friday. We are definitely doing it.
hoping to make the tailgate party before cannon. It depends on my ride though! See you all saturday!
Is there an official meet and greet after the parade on Saturday?
3rd - 4th Row from the left, (Row 12 with a thank you to Lady Kett) depending on traffic, there will be a pre-cannon meet and greet.
Look for all the vehicles parked close to the gate with all the flags, mostly Scottish ones.
The parking area is FOF only but even if you can't park there you can walk by on your way to the gate.
Come by and say 'hi' and join the party.
If someone wants to organize a post parade meet and greet...post it here. But so many people march in the parade its hard to get them all together.
We get there quite early and always have been able to park in the row next to you guys - hope that is the same for this year?
Probably if you get there early enough. ;D
So, be there any requests for Miladies scones this year? ;D

Holt crap I am soooooooooooooo ready !
Can't say I'm ready, but I'm definitely looking forward to it. Boy, you WILL be there for opening, will you not?
Yes father...both days...with some 40 Creek for you
Such a GOOD boy! :D
Depending on how early my Mom wants to leave my folks house, it will determine whether I see everyone at tailgate or not. :)
Opening weekend, it looks like we'll have quite a crew, so we'll have food, beer (harp or shiner), wine, maybe champagne and water.
Of course we'll be flying the Spanish Imperial banner right in the middle of all the Scots. (makes King Henry nervous)
Yes Captain Teague I would request Lady Gryphon to bring some scones. I really enjoyed them at Sherwood..........Huzzah

WE'll be there early enough for tailgate (and for shame we have never stopped by) on opening day and both days of 2nd weekend. Gotta be home for Easter on Sunday of opening. We'll try to throw in something edible!

I will likely have a batch of my vanilla-chai scones & Dr Pepper
If there are scones will you guys want the fried pies I thought about bringing?
Jim
Lady Gryphons scones will be there for the weekend of Merlins Vow renewal. Just clarifying since the pre cannon goes on every weekend. ;D
also, a variety of scones simply means something for everyone's tastes... Mine tend to be pretty small, as well
I can never get the PP out of bed before 8 AM on weekends UNLESS it is a Faire weekend. I can get him awake and moving much faster than normal when he knows the treats waiting for him at tailgate.

By my reckoning, it is:
8 days, 16 hours, 29 minutes, 30 seconds until Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 8:30:00 AM (Scarborough Renaissance Festival time), when Merlin the Elder officially proclaims Opening Day Tailgate to begin... give or take...

I'm getting hungry!
So Kolaches for 2nd week end?????/
I'm making a few scones. Not like last year though since they didn't get eaten. I'm really looking forward to this weekend. See some of you Friday at the hotel, and the rest Saturday at Tailgate.
Barring any unforseen circumstances we will also bring kolaches for second weekend, about a dozen or so.
The maker of the chocolate covered nutella has gone back to Houston so no repeat of that, I'm afraid.
Unfortunately Amy and I won't be around for the next three weekends. Military for this weekend and vacation the two weekends after that.

I'll have Fresca on board for Scally (I don't think she does Coke) and some hard granny smith cider for you, luv. You may have to knock Angus out of the way...

She leaves herself logged in on three of the computers in the house. Maybe Merlin needs a FaceBook page.
But you didn't answer the question... how do I find the group?
Merlin,
If Nim's not a member, it's not visible, even to her. It's a closed group, so it's not visible unless you've been approved as a member. Best way I know to get approval is for someone who's already a member to add their friend, then PM one of the admin's to request approval. If the admin doesn't know/recognize the person, they will NOT be added. I added someone several weeks ago, and finally send a PM to an admin with a description of who she is, which the admin then approved her.
I sent a request to have her added. It may be visible to her by now.
Not yet, dear lady, but I'm a tolerably patient wizard...

That's funny. That may actually make me create a facebook account for my Ren Faire persona (Such as it is, anyway). I refuse to create one for my real-me. :)
LK do it!! I am on FB as Bonny Pearl. Nothing but ren madness on my account :)
I guess they're afraid of the wizard and his love. Still not visible. Who is the admin for the group?
HRH Queen Margaret and Lady Aislynn O'Farell, Countess of Glenmorangie.
Ok you senile old wizard <ducks flying reptiles> - I did it. Your turn.
https://www.facebook.com/LadyKettScarborough
Please note that is not my real name attached to it. I refuse to use my real name because of my employer. If you want connected on a professional basis, we can discuss LinkedIn via PM! ;)
But I guess I'd best get used to being called Twyla now. I always wanted to be called Twyla - there was a Twyla's Florist in a neighboring town when I was growing up! Sorasha is one of my online gaming character names that I'm fond of, and Zuonomir is just a cool last name I stumbled across somewhere.
Please don't report me to the Facebook police for assuming an identity LOL.
As if you are the ONLY person out of the gajillion on facebook who use a pseudonym... ::)
And you're STILL Lady Kett, even on there... I don't care WHAT name it has attached to it! :P :D
But what is this group that I can't see, either? No fair(e) to tease us all like that, and then not let us even LOOK!!! lol
ROW 12 on FB is listed as a Celtic Event. <snort>
It is the pre-cannon tailgate party mostly dominated by the Scots. They have reasons for keeping from the general public, one of which it is in reserved parking for FOF.
Well, it's mostly full of Celtic(ish) things. Like Scotch, Guinness, Harp hehe.

You'll live to regret it, Merlin! :D (BTW, just sent you a friend request.)
I think I filled his email up with suggestions too.
No worries, Doña. I'm trying to figure out who some of them are, though. I've gotten some friend requests from names I'm not familiar with, and the available photos don't help. I'm figuring, however, that if they are friends to you and the Don, and Lady Kett, they shouldn't be too dangerous.
I'm now friends with Lady Kett, and quite a lot of people I know from TRF, but not too many from Scarborough Faire. Scarby was my home faire from the mid-90's until I moved to Houston at the end of 2003 --- long before I knew about, or joined Facebook.

Hey Merlin, think they'll let us leave Facebook now? ;)
NO!
In some ways, I like it better here. It's more focused to my interest, and I don't have to listen to some of my friends who like to be verbally abusive to people. However, there are some changes that need to be made around here, and I don't think the powers that be are interested. I need to start my own planet. It would be nice, as long as I can persuade the good folks I know to join me.
Hey Merlin, you know you can change your settings so you only see some of the post of your friends... and limit what they see of your posts, right?
Yeah, I'm new to Facebook and am still learning.
I guess I'd better learn quickly. It appears that the God of R/F doesn't like to be challenged. I don't know who it is, but they appear to like to disappear anything they have a problem with--without notice--in lieu of confronting anyone. It would not surprise me to find that even though I'm here more than they are, that I will disappear entirely before long. Pretty lame, if you ask me...at least I attended RenDezvous. Pardon, but I'm pissed now!

Hugs Merlin. When you get that planet thing worked out can I come visit? Maybe move in? I'll pay rent, LOL!
PS settings in facebook just bamboozle me at the moment. I'm content to stumble along since everyone made me crawl out from under my rock! :)~
Well, I will admit that I am not too great at the filtering settings. But in my defense, as soon as I get one set figured out, Facebook changes all the settings and I have to relearn new ones.
That one of the reasons I don't like Facebook. They are all ways changing something.
So who is ready for the Wine, whiskey and kolache extravanganza before cannon?

Haha, I know of at least one that might! But it will be a fairly small batch as I just got into wine-making back in December! so I've only got about a gallon and a half of December mead that is almost ready to go! It technically should be aged a little longer, but it's drinkable right now! it's a dry mead though... I've not checked the alcohol percentage, but I'd wager it's at around a 14ish percent
I do have a good bit of Jalapeno wine though! A gallon of mild, a gallon of medium, and a gallon of HOT
I'm VERY proud of this strange brain-child of mine!!!

I am interested in talking to you about not only mead, but this jalapeño wine you speak of . . . I've only brewed beer, but am keenly interested in brewing other things (especially mead). I've never considered even the possibility of making wine from jalapeños, but now I'm very, very curious.

I shall try to attend! I am almost ALWAYS late wherever I go- so I will do my best. :) So dang excited!
We had two friends that wanted to come with us to opening. When we told them we wanted to be there by 8 or 830 they thought we were nuts. They just don't understand Tailgate. Oh well. This year fuzzlet will be old enough to toddle about. This should prove interesting. And yes, I am doing my best for her to have a new outfit for opening. Hello there, everyone! this is off topic a bit, but not really, considering evrryones breakfast of choice. :)
I rarely drink at faire, but I feel as though it would be much more fun if I did. I have been offered plenty, and taken, but I don't want to be that guy that always drinks peoples things but never has anything to offer... so to alleviate this, I plan on bringing a bottle (or 2) of something, but I don't drink enough really to know what to get. Any suggestions? Brand name would be helpful, as opposed to 'rum' or 'whiskey'... hehe I guess agood way to phrase this is : "if I were offering you a drink, what would you want it to be?" :D
Thanks in advance everyone! Excited about this weekend!

Sailor Jerry's Spiced Rum is my all-time favorite! That or "The Kraken" Black Spiced Rum is decent as well!
Pyrate XO is a very good straight rum for a decent price. If you want to step that up Ron Zacapa is just about the best rum I've ever had.
Flavored rums (Parrot Bay etc.) are great for sharing for people who dont drink much because they rarely have that burn. Just smoothness. Parrot Bay makes a 90 proof coconif you want to knock people out quickly.
Sailor Jerry is good, Kraken is ok. I prefer Captain Morgan for spiced rums though.
Tattoo is a good unusual rum.
Mount Gay is a good one but not always easy to find.
*thats the 2 minute off the top of my head rum list*

At Fair I only drink wine and brandy. But in the morning most people either fall into the Scotch camp or the beer camp, usually. I was considering bringing some coca cola vodka to share at some point. I got it for new years and then we forgot all about it.
Forty Creek Canadian whiskey is a good choice in the less expensive variety though its price is climbing. Relatively new, the maker studied in Scotland to be a master distiller.

Thanks Ravic I'm going to stick VERY close to the list, but I would also love to know the faux pas drinkies as well...
and since flavor/experience was brought up, I like the idea of the parrot bay (being sweeter and easier to take) however I can't stand coconut rum! haha is there a sweeter spiced rum? somewhere between capt morgan secret stock, and parrot bay... hahah you guys seem like the ones to ask!

If you're looking for a sweet spiced Rum, I would advocate Sailor Jerry's it's nice and Rummy on the front, but a nice sweet caramelly aftertaste! VERY pleasant to drink
then again, I'm not NEARLY as well versed as Teach... So, what do you think Teach? S.J.'s a good start for what Oswyn is describing?
Sailor Jerry isn't bad. It's really a matter of choice and taste on that.
SJ, Capt Morgan, Cruzan & Bicardi all fit that bill for sweet but not pricey.
The real question is do you want a darker rum like Myers or Old Monk with heavy flavor or a clear like Bicardi etc. with lighter flavor.
If I were introducing a newbie rum drinker I would spend a few extra (literally like 3-4 more) and go with Pyrate XO reserve. It's a gold rum that's kind of between them all with good all around smooth flavor.
On the DO NOT DO list is *gag* potters "rum". Nasty arse crap that is.
Price matters on rums. The cheaper they are the worse the flavor. *gag* potters is damn near free.
*Perhaps I may bring some Ron Zacapa rum so you can taste what heaven is like*
We've never done the tailgate before, I'm hoping we will be able to mobilize out of the hotel early enough to make it. I assume we should then head over to the FoF parking lot and look for you all (after parking in our plebian location, lol)? I'm also wondering if anyone has any good suggestions of something to bring, it must travel well and not require refrigeration as we will be travelling down from OKC Friday and spending the night in a hotel. I look forward to seeing you all there!
Bring something to drink that is non-alchoholic in addition to whatever alchohol you are bringing. Cookies, breakfast pastries are usually good choices that don't require refridgeration.
Giant chocolate cake is probably not a good idea.
We travel from central Arkansas, and cannot carry perishables. I always have, and offer, a selection of ales, Coke, Fresca, sometimes other soft drinks, and never travel without my Jack Daniel's.
I will try to bring something this year instead of just eat other peoples food. ::)

In the event that I am in attendence, what shall I bring (food wise) I can bring a basket o muffins, or a caserole (that seems messy)
Any suggestions?
Finger foods work best.... scones... mini-donuts.. or just show up and drink !

The next time we meet I will tell you the car saga - quite interesting.
The car saga sounds ominous.
But I will once again have mini-kolaches if all goes well tonight.
look forward to seeing you there.
Time to start planning folks. 8)
Room is already reserved, and FoF passes purchased. :D
I will definitely be there at some point. I am hoping at least for Opening Weekend.
I will be there. Can`t wait to see all you wonderful rennies...................Huzzah
I have moved to Michigan :-[
I will try to come back to TX for a visit (hopefully for a few weeks) for the fair
We have never had the pleasure of attending the tailgate extravaganza. We will be there opening weekend, probably both days and hope to make it to tailgate. It's been years since we have had the chance to hang out with Faire Folke and I hope we can reconnect and meet some folks that we haven't met yet. See you in April.......
Ryk, there are some folk there before 8:00 am! If I can herd all my crew, I would like to be there just after 8.
The row has gotten so crowded that if you're not there between 7:30 and 8:00 you might have to park on row 10 or 9.
Herding the crew is the tough part Merlin! We are going to try to go most of the weekends this season. We'll get there and try to join the crowd.
Looks like a progress from Lord Gauwyn and Lady Addilay for opening weekend - looking forward to seeing some of our friends at our first faire of the year. :) :) :)
Opening?!?? YAY!! We will see you there! Where are you staying? We'll be at the Hampton...

I knew you were going, that is why we chose the weekend. M'Lady is making accommodations somewhere, not sure what place.
Trying to get Kett and Sidekick to come also.
Did you have to invite those dweebs? Awesome! Wouldn't that be great?!? ::)

I can't remember the last time I heard dweeb :)
You thought I was kidding bout my age??
Due to a conference for work. We are trying to figure out of we will be able to be there for opening weekend. Depends on who will be there :)
I'll be there. Who else do you need?
We will be there. Maybe even with bells on.

Wouldn't surprise me, Doña, with that ding-a-ling you run around with...heheh...just kidding, Don Juan! You know I love ya man...in a kindly old wizardly way...
we are going to have so much fun!

I wish we could make it down for it... Have some fun for me!

Great - I misunderstood your comment above - that is what prompted my book of face message. Will see you in a couple weeks!!
We will be there!!! :)
Got the word that the PP, Fuzzlet and I will be at opening weekend this year. Yay!! They decided to fly the PP instead of make him drive, so we will be there. Does any one know where there might be extra tickets? ;D
Yay!!! Can't wait to see how big Fuzzlet has gotten! :) ;D
She is already on her second round of garb. :) She is growing like a weed. :)
There now...........all set, truck full of garb back from the cleaners. Newbies in tow. FoF passes and reservations at Super 8. And, we believe we'll actually be there for pre-cannon tailgate for the first time!
Saturday A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68.
Saturday Night A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50.
Sunday 20 percent chance of showers, partly cloudy with a high near 68
Not bad at all
I see quite a difference from all the weather services - I like this one the best
Okay...so for the first time in forever...looks like I will be making CANNON! We are driving in early Sat morning..so looks like we will be at the tailgate :) It will be...The Dirt Fairy...myself...and my Mermaid (A Ren Virgin) :)
You do realize, of course, that we sacrifice Ren Virgins...
Saturday A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 65. East wind 5 to 10 mph.
Weather wizard keeps changing his mind. Still not bad......no snow and no blazing heat, could have either in Texas!
We are packed and ready to head out the door, taking the cloaks. Happy Scarby 2014 everyone!

Perhaps Wizards have extras; never know when you'll need an extra...something.
It looks as though my cousin and I will be making our maiden visit next spring. We are both extremely excited about it, too ;)
Scarby has the best tailgate gatherings of any of the faires I've been to, RefMom3. I am pleased that we will be escorting you and your cousin on this trip!
I've never been to a tailgating gathering of any kind; I can't speak for my cousin, since she's had a much more exuberant sort of life than I, so I wouldn't be surprised about anything with her ;), but I'm very much looking forward to the whole experience, especially since we'll be sharing it with you and your lovely bride!
Hello!
Was there any word on a tailgate for this Saturday before the first opening weekend?

Of all the faires we travel, Scarby has the best tailgating (but make sure you don't miss the gate show)
I'm planning to visit Scarb for the first time May 2nd/3rd this year. Very excited! Anyone else headed there that weekend?
I too am visiting with my daughter for the very 1st time on May 2nd and 3rd. Any tips on what to see or where to visit is appreciated. Lete know for whom I should be looking out!
Var and I will be at Scarby on April 25th and 26th! I am looking forward to seeing many R-F friends!

My suggestions some things that are unique to Scarborough Scottish Court at chest field 11am, History Customs and Manners lectures 11:30 and 4:30, court dance at 5 Pub sing at the Captain pub at 6. Chest match at 3. Check out the Celtic troupe in Holly field and see what they are up to. Beer and wine tasting are fun and informative.
We enjoyed the History Customs and Manners session; it was very enjoyable, and worth the time.

Chest field? And a chest match? Sounds... intriguing ;)
Me thinks Sir Richard may have been looking a bit more closely at some of the combatants than at others...? ;) heheh
