Title: Not Allowed Any More New Projects. Who's with me?!
Post by: gem on October 10, 2012, 05:11:58 PM
Egad! Feeling like I haven't accomplished much on my ever-lengthening to-do list this year, I decided to sit down and prioritize my WIPs (and the Works-Not-Yet-In-Progress, but in various stages of planning & stashing).

I have ELEVEN. And some of those are complete gown projects (meaning, not just a dress, but a chemise, a kirtle, an overgown, and all the mockups for the above... so we won't even count how many individual pieces that is!).

So. That's it. I am officially on a New Project Fast for the next year (ohmigosh). If I make really good progress on the list--like, say, knocking off a few major items, MAYBE I can add another project--but only for Milord. I have plenty of things on this list to keep me garb happy for ages. Of course, this also means a fabric fast, as that is one of my *major* culprits for spurring new projects. If I hadn't gotten that brown embroidered muslin, after all....

I need some accountability, though. I know we have the Gallery of In-Progress Projects, but I was wondering if anyone was interested in a WIP Kill-Along, where we all post our to-do lists and cheer each other on as we knock off those items we've been meaning to finish.

Anyone want to join in?

***

Deep breath... here's mine, in the order of priority I've identified:

*1. Brown embroidered smock DONE!!
*2. Outstanding embroidery exchange project. DONE!!
*3. New green shirt for Milord. [/b] DONE!!!
4. St. Catherine chemise (embroidery & sewing)
Need to commit to embroidery and threads.
5. Other embroidered smock (one sleeve & the back done).
*6. Van Helsing Jacket. For Comic-Con next July.
Need to test fit new sleeve pattern & mark embroidery pattern on fabric
And then, you know, make it.
<--Status has been changed to "semi-permanent UFO." At the moment, no real plans to continue it.[/b]
*7. Elizabethan jacket (Tudor Tailor)
Scale up pattern, mockup, adjust, make
8. Elizabethan fitted gown (Tudor Tailor)
         Ditto Elizabethan jacket
9. Promenade Gown (chemise, partlet, kirtle, gown, hat, & all of the research and test-fitting & mockups that go along with that. I'm starting again from scratch.)
10. The Red Margo, which goes with the second embroidered smock
Totally stashed. Ready for another Iron Dress competition!
11. Embroidered Coif
A kit that's been in my stash for ages. I'm having fabric angst about it, but I think I'm working through it.

If I were as productive as I fantasize about being, I could probably get almost half of those done in a year, focusing on one project each month. So I've marked them with asterisks, just for an added challenge! Ha!

....Ok, off to tackle the rest of that brown smock.

I have:

Green wool kirtle for a friend, skirt is more or less together just needs to finishing, bodice and interlining and lining are all cut out. -Need to finishing this by early Nov.
Green wool jacket I started last month just lost momentum on it, the sleeves are being irksome.
Kirtle sew-along project - Need to take more photos for the first part of the tutorial still, going to cut out out the mock up today hopefully.
Black wool fitted gown for myself -Eventually
Olive drape fitted gown for friend who is getting the green wool kirtle.. also would like to finish this by early Nov but doubting it.
Steampunk Halloween - got the outer fabric... doubt I'll get to it this year.
Green Velvet Dress - Need to sketch out designs.
Fantasy Elf Dress Thing that I can't decide on sleeves for.

This has turned into my year of Green.

Brilliant Idea.
Can we put in mundane/ and fantasy garb projects also??

Well
assuming we can, here is my list

-3 pairs of steampunk inspired mundane shorts for work- knee length
- 3 peasant shirts
- 2 pairs of gloves
-1 corset with detachable sleeves and cowl
-Mord Sith outfit- catsuit, gloves, boots and armor included (ideally ready for Megacon in March 2013)
-steampunk electrical accessories
-redwork embroidery blouse- inspired by Anna Valerious (Van Helsing)
-Saint Seiya- Gold Scorpio outfit/armor (ideally ready for Megacon in March 2013)

modified to add
I forgot to add the following
-3 rifle sleeves
-some kind of Lord of the Rings garb for the opening night in December
Thats all I can think of at the moment. I have all the supplies and materials for all of these so I really have no reason to go to Joanns except for thread.

My todo list between now and the next year's ren fest season.

Not a terribly long list, but it'll keep me busy as I keep practicing my sewing skills.

Huzzah! More folks 'fessing up to their lengthy to-do lists! And I did not mean to imply that anyone else must sign a blood oath not to take on any more projects. LOL I only meant that I am charging myself with finishing off as many of my own as possible, and that I would welcome the company if others were so disposed.

And I have progress! I have cut out the brown embroidered chemise! And, clever me, I cut the body pieces along the selvage so I will not have to hem the thing.  ;D  (The fabric has a wide border along each end that's not embroidered--maybe 3"--and at first I just liked the idea of seeing the finished edge of the embroidery in the chemise, and then the *practicality* of the impulse occurred to me, as well!)

Onward!

ETA: A couple hours later, and I've finished the first several major sewing steps. I am maybe not quite halfway done? I think I might be able to finish this tomorrow!

You have the best ideas Gem!! Ugh, I'm embarassed by my list, but since my folder is right here  ;D ...*ahem*

Dane projects:
1. Vest for me--actually in progress, just stalled
*2. Blouse for me--have everything needed
*3. Pj pants for hubby and me--have everything needed
4. Workout pants for me--have everything needed
5. This plaid skirt: http://www.simplicity.com/p-8010-burda-style-skirt.aspx (http://www.simplicity.com/p-8010-burda-style-skirt.aspx) I only have the pattern; it probably belongs in dream projects, but c'mon it's just a skirt.

WIP:
1. sleeves for yellow/red bodice I finished this summer--cut out AND pinned, what's the deal??
2. Wonder Woman bustier mock-up--cut out
*3. Finishing touches on my and hubby's Victorian outfits--buttons, etc.
*4. Alice in Wonderland pinafore-style apron and hem skirt for my sister--have to cut pattern but have everything; and the skirt will take no time but, ya know...
*5. Victorian hat reworking--everything's pinned to it, just need to sew.

Dream Projects:
1. Spada Gypsy painting--yeeeeahhh...well, we all know I pretty much have everything to do it except drafting skills :-\
2. high-neck chemise--again, have everything...because I'm a horder
3. square-neck Victorian chemise--no pattern
*4. Victorian petticoat--kind of a priority seeing as I need it by the 26th; I'll have to wing the pattern, but no biggie
5. *Someday* I'd like a Victorian nightgown set
6. I also want to make a 1950's dress with a rouched bust out of that awesome blue sheer polka dot fabric I got from one of my hauls

*exhale and sigh* so that is my crazy ADHD list. Also, I only have about a week off from school and I woke up with a nasty cold this morning and everything with an asterisk is what I planned on getting done on my break. I have to at least get my sister's stuff and the Victorian stuff finished since it's all for Halloween. Yeeeaahh...good luck with that.

Well... I don't feel quite so bad, now.  ;D  I can't promise to NOT take on any more projects, but maybe seeing some of them here will at least spur me to get on with the ones I'm working on, and start the ones I've been putting off, or gathering for.

Ren:
Finish my French seamed chemise/camicia with the gathered banded neckline and hand-rolled hem and cuffs.
Start split skirt and sleeves for my daughter's lower noble garb. (have the fabric for the skirt picked out, and have to decide what to use for the sleeves)
One, or possibly two, new chemises for my daughter, to go with the nobles.
(all fabrics already in stash)

Steampunk/Victorian:
Finish my green Dupioni bustle that is currently pinned and needs to be permanently stitched.
Lace cuffs to match all the collars.
2-3 pair frilly "Lolita" spats for me.
Several new mini-top hats in different fabrics.
Full ruffled petticoats in at least 3 different colors.
Walking skirt.
Grand Parlor Skirt (Truly Victorian)
Leather bracers and tophat for me.
(all fabrics already in stash... still need leather)

Halloween:
Vampire slayer/monster hunter for my daughter.
Costumes for my nephew and great nephew (haven't even been given a hint, yet... but they better hurry!).
Totally revamp my old Autumn Goddess costume (won't take much, and all the fabric is already there)
Leather masks for my daughter and myself.

That's all I can recall at the moment, although I think there are a few others, and I KNOW there is one that still has to go out to someone else before the end of the year...  ::)  :o

This is the Fabric I bought for the gown from SR Harris on Saturday with my $8.49 a yard coupon for Decorator Fabric.

AS for personal Projects, I have this gown from ELIZABETH R in the plans. I have Gold on Black Frames trim from www.pillagedvillage.com (http://www.pillagedvillage.com), additional tiny Gold trim, with tons of 6mm pearls. Contrast color will be a rich Burgandy Velveteen with Burgandy Piping.

This will be done in my Spare time being what comes down the pike in Custom Orders and Alterations.

You know, it figures that I make this pledge,
and this week the brocade I have been drooling over goes on sale for $4.99/yd at joanns.
Murphy... he is a sly one I tell you.

I think that's a totally fair exception. It's not like you JUST saw this fabric and couldn't resist it; it's been in the works for you for a while, so you've had a chance to consider what use you might put it to, right?

How long is the sale going on? How much do they have/what's the risk of somebody buying it out from under you? Here's what I'd (try to convince myself to) do: Pull out an item from your list that you can finish quickly (maybe one of the peasant shirts?), and knock it off your list. Then you can replace it with the project for *this* fabric, and you'll be at the same net starting point. No harm done--but you actually made progress by finishing one of your projects! (Frex, I want to order a new pattern and mockup fabric for Milord's green shirt, but I'm not allowed to that until I put the cuffs and collar on my embroidered chemise. Which I am going to do right now!)

Well... does it count if I BOUGHT something that can take the place of 3 of my proposed projects???  Just purchased a previously loved brocade skirt and chemise set that will be beautiful as the base for my daughter's nobles AND a velvet skirt that I may turn into a split skirt for her, if it's full enough... AND a short chemise for myself, for any extremely good price!

So... does that mean I get to check those things off my list and add something else?  ;D  heheh
Title: Re: Not Allowed Any More New Projects. Who's with me?!

gem you are such an enabler :)
Technically the sale goes for a bit- its the joanns current flyer.
Ideally, I would spend $35 during the moonlight madness so I can get the 30% off total purchase card and be able to use that on the brocade.
In theory I could spend the $35 on exacto knife blades and supplies for screen printing.

We will see what I come up with.

Rani, I think that if those things make the project "complete" then it totally counts but you have to add something new to the 'to do" list

HUZZAH!  I finished my first item!! Just put the last slip stitches in the collar and cuff facings for the brown embroidered smock.

More pix in the Finished Projects thread!

So, of course, I spent the day doing some window sourcing for materials for a project that is so totally NOT on my list. I am absolutely restraining myself for now... but it does mean that tomorrow I'll be buying the pattern and fabric for Project #2, Milord's green shirt!  Need to get going on #3 (embroidery exchange project), but it requires some prepwork. Might take a couple days before that happens. Off to work on #5, the Other Embroidered Smock.

My List:

Mundane:

Garb & Costumes:

I've finished all the nephews' Halloween outfits.  I'm hoping to get them to pose tomorrow.   :)  It gets cold in the Mid Atlantic during Halloween so I make them nice fleece capes or outfits so they don't have to cover up their costumes with a coat.

Cannot WAIT to see this! Nobody here does German.

I am trying to decide if I'm allowed to add mundane projects to my list. I really pretty much never sew mundane stuff (in the last year I made my MIL an apron, and myself one muslin of a knit top--it worked out fine, but I never got around to the real top!). I was thinking of taking my local shop's studio class again this winter, with the focus of getting to know my serger better and using up some of my wonderful stash of knits. But after seeing all my garb projects laid out like that, I'm wondering if I should put that on hold.  :-\

What say you all?

I found this interesting thread (http://www.renaissancefestival.com/forums/index.php?topic=9919.15) from 2009 (also incidentally started by me!  :-[) where a bunch of us weighed in on garb planning and working our way through to-do lists. It's worth a revisit!

well personally
I was in the same boat- focusing only on garb,
and over the last several months I have become completely disgusted by my mundane clothing so now I do 1 piece garb, 1 piece mundane clothing.

Green wool kirtle for a friend, skirt is more or less together just needs to finishing, bodice and interlining and lining are all cut out. Bodice interlining is done, just needs flat lining and sewn together. Lining partly in, skirt attached. Letting it hang a few days before I even the hem and bind it. Then on to eyelets.

Green wool jacket I started last month just lost momentum on it, the sleeves are being irksome. Sleeves have been ironed and are tacked in... Sleeves are in, lining is in... need to unpick part because the sides are flaring too much for my taste. Just needs wings, collar, sleeve hems and the lining turned over the sleeves.

Kirtle sew-along project - Taking photos today

Steampunk Halloween - Decided to make it after all, underskirt done, corset pattern roughly scaled up, corset mock-up cut out.

Black wool fitted gown for myself -Eventually

Ok, so I admit it... I'm pretty much useless at NOT planning new projects while I still have WIP or a planning list.  I blame it on Goodwill...

Sunday, my daughter and I set off in search of tea pots, for our upcoming crafters tea party which we are hosting in our home for my eccentrically crafty "aunts".  We're going to be making mini top hats, at their request.  We will also be making ribbon Christmas tress, because, well... I want to.  Anyway, enough background...

As I was waiting for my daughter to get back from her visit to the powder room I perused the skirt aisle... and found the most wonderful flocked navy blue satin pencil maxi skirt, with side slits.  Perfect for making a capelet to go with the Victorian my daughter wants, starting with a frothy royal blue petticoat, and building from there.  All it needs is some of the gorgeous black venise lace I already have...

And then I wandered over to the curtain/bedspread/sheet/table runner/fabric section... and that was my REAL undoing.  I found an incredible queen size duvet cover in burgundy velveteen (with a 100% cotton burgundy backing) that is perfect for the split skirt for the nobles my daughter also wants... and a pale butter yellow light weight jacquard round table cloth that will be perfect for a bustled overskirt for Steampunk.  I also found a white cotton sheet with the prettiest lace ruffle that will make a wonderful petticoat all on it's own!  An emerald green brocade valance destined for one layer of a traveling bustle (steampunk) came next, then a faux patchwork table runner in gold upholstery, lined with gold silk, that will most likely just grace my tea table this weekend, and later be turned into something fun... and after that... a stunning 5 yard sari in cream and red and pink silk, with an image of Krishna and Radha in the patterned area. I paid $.75 for it, because it was half off that day.  Yes... 75 whole cents.

Oh... I also found two cute little tea pots for the party, but I still need a few more... so I have to go to the other thrift store tomorrow.  :o  (sigh)  I'm soooo weak.

I'm finishing projects...but am still getting fabric here and there for new ones.. :o

Bodice interlining is done, just needs flat lining and sewn together. Lining partly in, skirt attached. Letting it hang a few days before I even the hem and bind it. Kirtle sew-along project - Taking photos today

Steampunk Halloween - Decided to make it after all, underskirt done, corset pattern roughly scaled up, corset mock-up cut out.
Didn't get it done in time for Halloween, corset is all cut out, semi set aside for now.

Olive drab fitted gown for friend who is getting the green wool kirtle.. also would like to finish this by early Nov but doubting it.
Outer fabric and lining cut out yesterday, sewing it together today. Fitting is Friday.

Green Velvet Dress - Need to sketch out designs. - need correct color dye.

True, true... although some of these tie into the projects on my list, so I don't feel too bad about them.  I'm just glad this is a list of sewing projects ONLY... otherwise I would feel seriously in need of an intervention!

Centuries... you astound me!  I can't even imagine getting that many projects done, or nearly so, in such a short amount of time!

Which leads me to wonder... how many of you ladies who sew so frequently have young children?  Because, as a single parent to an 11 y/o daughter... I just don't even know how I manage to find the time to get ANYthing done, when I stop and think about it.  Most of my crafting seems to be done in the middle of the night, actually... when any sane person would be sleeping!  ::)  lol

so I am totally with you!

But I did recently learn to crochet and have about 85 projects planned.

But that doesn't count I don't think. Right? Lol

Mundane:

<-I ended up buying one for $4 at the local thrift store that I love

Garb & Costumes:

<- She's coming over this weekend so I have the pattern out to fit it
<-The bodice is done, 1/3 of the skirt is done, and the sleeves are done
<- I have the perfect fabric for the sleeves but I need to figure out what to use for the dress itself!
<- I'm trading this one for "until next year" and putting the Pink Wool UFO Italian dress in this space.
<- It's hanging up right now and I just need to hem it
<- It's on the next year list now
    <- It got finished!  Yay![/list]

Bodice interlining is done, just needs flat lining and sewn together. Lining partly in, skirt attached. Letting it hang a few days before I even the hem and bind it. Then on to eyelets.  Ready for Friday fitting, just need armholes bound and All that is left is sleeves.

Fitting went well but I forgot to take photos, the waist ended up a tiny bit long but as there is no boning in the kirtle it isn't a painful issue.

Olive drab fitted gown for friend who is getting the green wool kirtle.. also would like to finish this by early Nov but doubting it.
Outer fabric and lining cut out yesterday, sewing it together today. Fitting is Friday.

I have one armhole left to bind then just need to set the sleeves and even and bind the hem. That is the plan for Monday

Green Velvet Dress - still need correct color dye.

Adding yet another project...
Black wool fitted gown for myself- got a very nice deal on a wool blend that ended up a rather broadcloth weight, going to use that for a gown and the other black wool I had in mind for a kirtle.

Rani, I can't imagine what it is like to sew with kids, it is hard enough sewing with my new cat around.

Yay, Isabella! Can't wait to see the pix of the witch coat!

Yay, Centuries! Yay new kitty!!

With my work commitments for NaNoWriMo, I'm not getting much any sewing done this month, but I'm making good progress on the Outstanding Embroidery Exchange Piece! Huzzah! I also have some New Theories about the embroidery for the St. Catherine chemise, but I am Being Very Good and finishing the current embroidery before starting the new one. Really, really.  :)

Oh, good... then it's not just that I'm lazy and unorganized!  There always seems to be more to do than there is time in the day week month year...

LOL, Rani, I'm in the same boat!  Between mom, mom, mom, mom, mom, a full time job, and helping at my hubby's office, the only sewing time I have is at around 9 or 10pm and I use it to make scrub hats that I sell at work.  (lack of money doesn't help either... ::)

Finally I have gotten around to working on a skirt that I started last year. Its almost done, but as I am working on it my mind is all " Hey this would look good in pinks and purples" then after that gets swatted away " Hey the monster would love to have tunics that look like The Avengers" yeah at least that can be done in the spring along with all new shirts. That is a must though.

Before I start anything more I have to finish the projects in my "think about what you did wrong box" and well that is slowly not going to be for a long time.

You have the best ideas Gem!! Ugh, I'm embarassed by my list, but since my folder is right here  ;D ...*ahem*

Dane projects:
1. Vest for me--actually in progress, just stalled
*2. Blouse for me--have everything needed (actually made two b/c it was so cute and easy)
*on hold for fabric*

WIP:
1. sleeves for yellow/red bodice I finished this summer--cut out AND pinned, what's the deal?? *addendum--want to embroider down the front of each sleeve before attaching lining*
2. Wonder Woman bustier mock-up--cut out *Update--actually putting together the mock-up!!*
*3. Finishing touches on my and hubby's Victorian outfits--buttons, etc.
*4. Alice in Wonderland pinafore-style apron and hem skirt for my sister--have to cut pattern but have everything; and the skirt will take no time but, ya know...
*5.Victorian hat reworking--everything's pinned to it, just need to sew. Update--new band attached, need to make a gold pleated piece for the back then attach the bow.[/s]

Need to do list:
1. cartridge pleat last year's teal ren skirt
2. fix mike's ren pants closure
3. high-neck chemise--must have. period.

Dream Projects:
1. Spada Gypsy painting--yeeeeahhh...well, we all know I pretty much have everything to do it except drafting skills :-\ *Update: I think I would rather do Centuries kirtle sew-along instead of this right now*
2. high-neck chemise--again, have everything...because I'm a horder
3. square-neck Victorian chemise--no pattern
*4. Victorian petticoat--kind of a priority seeing as I need it by the 26th; I'll have to wing the pattern, but no biggie--Update: making three rows of ruffles 266" long...*sigh* *DONE BABYYYY!*
5. *Someday* I'd like a Victorian nightgown set
6. I also want to make a 1950's dress with a rouched bust out of that awesome blue sheer polka dot fabric I got from one of my hauls
7. Latest dream project--Michelle Yeoh's Peking fighting outfit in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon--does anyone know where I would even start??
8. Victorian hiking outfit from Laughing moon.

Okay, I have 2 more weeks of break left. I need to prioritize.
1. WW bustier mock up
2. embroider sleeves for yellow bodice (this can be stretched out, I have time)
3. Nightgown (possibly not Victorian, but lots of pintucks) in flannel--fabric is old and has weird stain.

What would *you* pick out of these lists for me to do?

Wicked, did you decide? You could always go with the Screaming Rotation method--work on whatever piece is calling to you most strongly!

I am making great strides with the Overdue Embroidery Exchange. I made a radical design change after finishing the initial embroidery, and I'm very excited about the results. It's a brain-bender, though! I'm having to "chart" the stitches as I'm stitching them, and then backward-engineer the design so I can chart it on paper, and then stitch it again in mirror image.  :o (That's me after a couple hours working with the 36-ct linen. LOL)

I need to hustle on this, though, and not only because it's over a year late! My brother is having twins, and I need to start their birth pieces... AND I'm really starting to get twitchy for a sewing project. I want to get started on Milord's green shirt!

Gem, I think I've been going with the Screaming Rotation lol. I have the WW bustier mock-up boned and I just have to do a final fitting. Then I decided to embroider a small piece for a friend. Then I got distracted by really cute vintage sewing machine fabric and made a needle book and 3/4 of a sewing apron out of it. I'm winding down now because school is starting next week (grrr grumble cuss).

So when I say embroider I mean just starting out and literally just throw some back stitches and satin stitches onto an iron-on design...all that stuff you're talking...sounds very exact and meticulous and, well, *correct* lol! Maybe someday I'll get there. I need a tutor! I found a *phenomenal* blog that acts as an online tutorial for stitches, but nothing about charting or counting or the like.

Congrats on your brother's twins! He'll have his hands full!

Is it Mary Corbet's blog? She's *fabulous.* The only blog I read every single day. :D

I've been thinking about starting an embroidery/handwork thread here, if there's any interest in discussing period embroidery, but I need to finish Overdue Exchange *first,* since it's for a member here & she doesn't yet know what it looks like!

Huzzah! I think I may have tracked down the fabric for Milord's new green shirt.

He wants this (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/23814262/403873075.jpg). I had this (http://www.fabrics-store.com/first.php?goto=big_fabric&menu=&fabric_id=725), but he preferred this (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/24167320/403847270.jpg), and I could only find these (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=calcutta+gauze&_sacat=0&_odkw=calcutta+cotton&_osacat=0&_from=R40). Late last fall I got my hands on this (http://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/9427#.UOtR6Xd4AZk) (it's OOP, so it was a lucky find), and today I FINALLY unearthed some heavy green cotton gauze. I had to convo an etsy merchant and beg her for her source. She was mysterious and unforthcoming--BUT has agreed to sell me the yardage we need!  Milord has approved the color, so as soon as she sets up the sale, we are good to go.

HUZZAH!

(I've been very, very good since Fair ended, and have not visited the fabric store ONCE. After seeing "The Hobbit" I did spend an afternoon thinking about Bilbo's patchwork robe, but once Milord confirmed he wouldn't actually wear it in public, I regretfully let that one go. :D)

Hee! That is a very true point, AR (and I would look fetching in one! :D), but it's Milord who's the crazy quilt fanatic in the family. The instant Martin Freeman walked on screen (http://24.media.tumblr.com/d0193d2823c58eb61aafdf58deb3d241/tumblr_mf42p3YxcY1qew6kmo1_500.jpg) in that, I knew he was going to be asking me for one! But after further reflection, we've decided to update his dwarf kit instead. Whew! (I don't quilt! I did source some vaguely similar drapes (http://ak1.ostkcdn.com/images/products/5960775/9cf374b5-9d98-48e2-bebd-bafd553a08ae_600.jpg), but that's as far as it went, thank goodness! I was afraid I'd be spending the next 10 years doing patchwork from my stash....)

It appears that 2013 is looking to be a Piratey Year!!!

In the lineup so far are several Pirate coats for men, one includes another Captain Teague coat and Angelica Teach inspiured ensemble from PoTC: On Stranger Tides for a Client's wife. She has an Underbust Corset already. I'll more than likely be making the Hat as well

Well, I have been a very delinquent seamstress, and I've added a project--and about 20 yards of fabric--to my list. ...And I'm about to buy another 8 yards of linen during Fabric-store.com's sale this week.  :o

So in an effort to get a little caught up, I am going to try to finish most of the following by the end of this week! I don't think I can actually do it (particularly with a neck injury), but I know I can get a lot done. Time to hustle, if I want more linen!

1. Outstanding Embroidery Exchange Project: The stitching is finished, but I'm having Spangle Indecision at the moment. I need to work that out today (Spangle Indecision is RESOLVED! Huzzah!), and then make some velveteen bias binding (velveteen is prepped and pressed). I'd like to have at least a start on the construction by the weekend.

2. Milord's Green Shirt: I have everything; just need to prep the pattern (update: Pattern is cut & waiting to be ironed) and make a mockup. Update 2: Mockup is cut & ironed & waiting to be assembled & fit.

3. Blue Velvet Elizabethan Jacket: Pattern is drafted; need to cut out the mockup and do a test fitting. (update: have cut out muslin.)

And if I'm feeling really ambitious...
4. Santa Hat. Not on my original list, but I bought a pattern for it, so now I'm committed.

Yikes! Better get started!!

I'm trying to finish up ufo projects, at least one or two a week if it is small stuff.

Black wool fitted gown that I posted about before is sitting in time out.
Ufo Ruff done and starched
Regency stays - lining and outer fabric cut out
Elizabethan loose jacket thing from 2006...cut out, needs lining, sleeves and trim decided on.
Tudor pointed hood, needs wire and velvet facing

I'm so hopeless when it comes to NOT starting new projects until I cross old ones off the list.  I've just volunteered to make some very simple "starter" Wizard's garb for a friend's husband, since the whole family will likely be accompanying us to TRF this season for AHE.  It will just be a VERY basic robe and tunic set, and he'll just use scrub pants for the bottoms, since this will be their very first visit EVER to a hard site Faire.  They have only experienced one soft site event in the past, but they are ALL hooked now... thanks to my daughter and I!  :D  heheh  I'm guessing they will most likely all be going home with new garb pieces purchased there on the grounds.  I'm going to lead the mom into Moresca... and just come back in 2-3 hours to collect her!

At least this is the only new sewing project I've taken on in the last several months.  Crafting projects, on the other hand... well, lets just not talk about those.   :-[

Yeah, original list has been totally thrown out the window. LOL! I had very good intentions, but I ended up making entirely different stuff instead (but I did make stuff! And some of it was stash stuff!!). And I know the first cold day will hit, and I'll be back thinkin' about that Elizabethan jacket!

I am happy to say that I did finish the Outstanding Embroidery Exchange Project, however. And the new reversible fairwear bodice I made was loooong overdue and something that, altho' not on my list, I'd been talking about for at least two years. And used stash! So I'm feeling ahead of the game.

Using stash is ALWAYS a good thing!  In fact... I think that should be my REAL goal, instead of trying to not plan new projects!  That would be soooo much more attainable for me!   LOL

I would love to see the embroidery project, btw... and the bodice, as well!  :)

Bodice is in the last page or two of the In Progress gallery, and the Outstanding Embroidery Project, now known as CenturiesSewing's Blackwork Pocket, can be seen right here (http://elizabethcbunce.wordpress.com/needlework/blackwork-pocket/)!

How exciting that your friends are coming! You're brave to make garb for brand newbies (we usually just break out the loaner gear before foisting handmade originals on them! LOL)

What amazing work, Gem!  Soooo many tiny stitches!!!  And I love your bodice, also!  :)

As for the hedge wizard's robes, well... he's just looking for something really simple to get started with, so I'm not too worried about it!  In fact, for what I have in mind there will only be a couple of simple cuts to about 4 yards of fabric, then all of the raw edges will be bound with bias tape... and he will have a simple long tunic to wear under it, which won't be much more complicated than the robe!  He could have borrowed my pirate garb again (we took them to our one weekend Medieval Festival this year, also), but he's set on being a wizard, so off we go...  LOL

I felt so proud of myself this weekend.  I managed to get 4 items off my UFO project list.  Three which were Ren related.

The PP has taken to having me do things for his projects. IE sewing a shirt for a puppet, making the lining for his jewelry boxes. It has gotten so out of hand I ended up putting on the refrigerator a list of all my current projects.  If he wants me to do something for him he has to decide which project is more important.  That has helped curb some of his projects.  It has also helped me see what all I have going on. Hense the reason I was able to power through the UFO's this weekend.  I still have one more I would like to get done this week, but I can at least see where I am on all my projects now.

Hehehe...  I cashed in my winter clothing allowance to make a wool and cashmere Burgundian with a linen lining and linen kirtle, for the Harvest Festeval at Empire next month!  Then I persuaded my hubby to let me have 5m of wool, silk, and linen mix suiting to make myself a suit for my nephew's wedding.  It was £19.99 per meter...  It's my birthday present, very early!  Sadly, they sent the coral rather than the teal.  But when I rang up and said so, they sent the 5m of teal out to me the next day, and told me to keep the coral as a gift for the inconvenience!  So no, I can't say no more personal projects yet!  (And that fabric was VASTLY reduced at £19.99!  The original price was £134.99 per meter!  So for £99.95 I got, basically, £1,349.90's worth of fabric!  And I am here to say it really IS worth it!)

I marked of 2 and half more things on my UFO list.   Granted had an "oh crud" moment when I realized the fuzzlet didn't have a special birthday outfit for her party.  Enter Mommy and her mighty stash.  Nothing like cute broad cloth colors and appliques to make kids cuter.

People ask me why I have such a big stash I tell them because you never know when you have to make something at the last moment, literally!

Kate, I am so envious of your amazing bargain!  I hope you'll be posting the Burgundian in the Projects threads, and the wedding suit in the mundane sewing thread!  I would love to feel that fabric!

Stitch, you're just blazing through your list!  Stash really IS nice to have... if you actually USE it!  I just seem to keep acquiring it, and never get to even start anything!  I've been working on lots of other things, though... and I need to post a couple of things in the Hats thread... but my fabric stash keeps giving me dirty looks, and trying to trip me as I walk past!  :o

I hope you'll be posting pics of Miss Fuzzlet in her b-day finery!  I can hardly believe it's been that long already!!!  :)

Rani you are right Stash is nice but you have to USE it. Given the late night calls I get from the theater about getting last minute items or even repairs having a sash helps.  Add in that sometimes having left overs from an old project can stretch the current budget helps even more.  I will say fabrics are not my weekness  ( ok spoonflower.com could be my weakness if I could buy anything there) but my real weakness is patterns.  Given all that I do, it is VERY hard to turn down a pattern sale. I won't say how BAD i was when McCalls were 70 cents at Joanns a couple weeks ago.   :o
Title: Re: Not Allowed Any More New Projects. Who's with me?!
Post by: Rani Zemirah on August 27, 2013, 06:05:40 PM
Oh, I'm bad about the $1 pattern sales, also!  I've never even SEEN any for .70!!!  :o  The JoAnn's down in the City shut down a year or so ago, for some reason, and as far as I know, no others have opened up here... so we go to Hancock Fabrics, which USED to be my very favorite fabric store ever (because we don't have any sort of fabric district here, unfortunately), but ever since they went truly corporate I almost can't stand to go in there anymore!  No one who works there knows anything about fabric, and most of them don't even know where anything is displayed, or what is supposed to be on sale... and half the time things don't even ring up right, and it's always a struggle to just be able to get the sale price!  Oh, and now they will only accept competitor's coupons if you actually print them out, instead of accepting the mobile versions from a cell phone.  And the employees have become rude and unhelpful...

Now it makes me sad to go there... and generally raises my blood pressure.  :-\  I still go, because it's pretty much all we have besides Walmart or Hobby Lobby, and neither of those has enough of a selection to provide the things I need.  I just try to go in and not interact with anyone there until it's time to get my cuts and check out.  Their prices have pretty much doubled in the last few years, also... so I haven't been buying much there at all... or anywhere else, really, unless it's just too good a deal to pass up!

What I really can't resist, though, is when I find something beautiful at a yard sale, or thrift store, for almost nothing!  That always comes home with me...  :D  lol

2 more gowns in my MUST MAKE projects list. An Elizabethan Gown I already have fabric and trims for to do a variation of. The other is a late Baroque Gown in the style of Queen Anne, youngest daughter of King James II of England.

So many projects, so little time.

Oh, my... I am so much more a fan of the Baroque era than the Elizabethan!  I know that's tantamount to blasphemy in Ren circuits... but just LOOK at the line and the cut of that dress, and what it does for the female form!  Not to mention the embellishment, and the sense of romance it conveys...  It's breathtaking!!!
Title: Re: Not Allowed Any More New Projects. Who's with me?!

The embellishment is also modern.  ;-)

It's not an extant gown.    This one, however, is:

(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c2/1660s_court_dress.JPG/320px-1660s_court_dress.JPG) (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3A1660s_court_dress.JPG)
1660s court dress (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3A1660s_court_dress.JPG) [CC-BY-SA-3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0))], by Ludi Ling (Own work), from Wikimedia Commons

The gown is from the 1660s.  The forms of embellishment, for the most part, haven't changed since the late 16th C.  Lace, bows, and trims are all still used.  (The pleated trims and gathered self fabrics of the 18th C seem to show up in the 1720's, when all fashion heck breaks loose)

My favorite from the post Jacobean 17th Century of extant clothing has to be the V&A stays, like everyone else.  But I have always wanted one of those 1650s~1670s at home jackets you often see depicted in paintings.  Such as this:

Baroque fashions for Women.....

Extent gown or no, the embellishment of the Pink Baroque gown is stunning none the less. The correct lines detail the design designates the latter 1600's into the early 1700's that led  into the Roccoco Period.

THAT gown would be stunning on you, Isabella! Go for it!

As for the Baroque gown, I have a lovely Peach Taffeta that would be perfect. The contrast color I want to find in a Rust, with Antique Ivory laces.

A friend of mine in New Jersey is sending me 2 big boxes of Bridal trims her late mother saved from over 65 years ago when she worked in the Garment District of New York City. Some of the trims my friend says have yellowed with age to look more Crème than White. Truly Vintage trims for a Vintage piece. She asked NOTHING for all the trims, just reimbursed for the shipping.

I will post photos of this new treasure. I am also thinking Victorian/Edwardian pieces  as well.

Oh, seriouslyy?!?  That would be amazing!  If you have anything not earmarked for a project I would be all kinds of happy to give it a home, and I would definitely have to make you something special to show my appreciation!  :)

Sooo, ummm... I was kind of bad today.  I HAD to go to Hancock's, because it's their Labor Day sale, and there were things I need that were more than half off, and I had a 50% off coupon and a 20% off total purchase coupon!  I HAD to use them!  :P  And I've been wanting to make something warm for my daughter and I to wear at night while camping at TRF this All Hallows, since it tends to get downright chilly down there at night!  I've settled on this (http://www.moresca.com/images/product/Nomad-image-1.jpg) as the style, since it's hooded, and will come down far enough to keep us warm, along with our skirts and leggings.  I found some polar fleece for $3.98 yd, and bought 1.5 yds of it for my daughter's Nomad, and I will be using it for the lining with a heavy drapery-weight woven (from my stash) over it... and then I found the most beautiful burnt orange medium drapery-weight woven (not sure of content, because it was a remnant, but it's a synthetic blend, I know) with a very slight nap, almost like a micro-suede, except that it's got a very obvious weave to it.  It feels almost like a chenille, but it doesn't have any of the messy chenille fuzz when I pull a thread out of the cut.  I have no idea what it is... but I LOVE it!  And I got 4 yards of it for $3 yd!  I'll use 2 yds of it for my Nomad cloak, then find something lovely to do with the other 2 yds!  I wish they'd had more... I would have bought it all!

Here's the orange...

It's actually really soft, and it drapes beautifully!  It feels like it will be easy to work with, also!  I now have to find just the perfect trim to go with it, though...  LOL

I have been both good and bad this week.  I was good in that for the theater I rescued an old skirt that needed a new waist band, and a good wash, and I turned it into an amazing bustled skirt for an actress.  I was also good in that I found 5.5 yards of a satin back micro sude that matched a 1.5 yard of upholstery from my stash, and I'm making a bodice and skirt out of that. Yay me!

Bad me ! I just placed a large order from Cleanersupply.com for all kinds of notions.  I'm sorry I was weak, and got bulk buttons, interfacing, lining, and large cone thread.  I only went on there to get 1 large spool of thread and zippers.

I was bad... soooo very bad.  I found 14 yds of the prettiest (and most impractical) orange/gold costume weight satin today at Walmart... for $1 yd!!!  I bought it all, and got it for only $12, because the last two yds have a tiny spot of sticky adhesive on the fold from the awful clearance tags they use!  I'm going to make a tiered skirt with it, all gathered and ruffled!!!  :D  I just couldn't help myself...

Rani, love the orange! Can't wait to see those Nomads!!

***
Well, WHEW. Milord has FINALLY pinned down exactly what he wants in a new green shirt. This started THREE SEASONS AGO, when he saw this shirt at Ophelia's (http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL417/1033223/23814262/398633130.jpg), but it only came in one size and didn't fit. He SAID what he liked was the more fitted look & straight sleeves. OK.

I found the fabric. I found a couple of patterns. I've been working on mockups--but they require alterations I'm not 100% sure how to make, so I keep setting it aside.

But now he's looking at other green shirts--traditional peasant shirts--at Fair, and asking when his shirt will be done. I tried to quiz him about whether he wanted the fitted, straight-sleeved shirt I was trying to make, or just a regular shirt like I've made him before. He didn't seem to understand the question!  ??? I showed him photos. He still didn't get it.

FINALLY, today, he was wearing a dark blue shirt he NEVER wears, and said, "Hey, this is really comfortable! I wonder why I never wear it." And later, "I think I really like this one. Could you make this one?"  I quizzed him a little, and finally: "Ok, yes: Just make me another one just like this!"

Me: "I can totally do that." THANK GOD!  He had to walk around in the shirt for four hours to figure out what he wanted, but I can use a pattern that already fits him well, add the lacing details that he likes for the sleeves and cuffs, and call it good!

YAY!  Sounds like the New Green Shirt is well on it's way to becoming a Finished Project!

Some people just don't like to be rushed into making up their minds...  ;)  heheh

I think I really should try and get a photo of the orange-y/yellow/gold satin, just to see if my camera can capture it!  It's amazing!  And it's LOUD!!!  lol  My daughter was appalled... but I fell in love with it!

Oh, my goodness!  I completely forgot my Find Of The Century!!!  I was at a yard sale a couple of weeks ago, and stumbled upon a piece of cardboard with somewhere between 15-20 YARDS of the most amazing gold bullion fringe wrapped around it!  The fringe, itself, is 5 inches long, and staggered in a chevron pattern on a 3 inch chevron patterned braid, all in pale gold.  It's not all in perfect condition, but most of it is usable...and I paid $2 for it ALL!

I also found a bunch of upholstery samples in 2' x 2' squares, and I believe I'm going to use those in a patchwork as the 2nd side of my nomad cloak, and quilt it all together.  I might even have to use some of the fringe in there, somewhere, as well...  :o

Rani, I love yard sales for that reason - you never know what other seamstresses have hidden away.  :-)

My local thrift store has had some GORGEOUS material lately.  I've ended up with several yards of different wool and wool blends for me and some stunning orange brushed denim.   My youngest brother's birthday is coming up and I'm making him a cape out of the orange denim.   Ever since he saw Mom's wool cape, he's wanted a cape too.

My weakness at yard sales/ swap meets are buttons.  I snagged an old table top sewing organizer from the 1950's-60's for $20.  Inside was about , I kid you not, 500+ high quality buttons.  What was even better was that there were multiples of each kind.  Instead of the 1-2 per card, there were 15-20 of varying sizes of pearl buttons, 4 hole, and two hole utilitarian buttons. We won't go into the number of nice whole packages of twill tape, bias tape and such.

I might have created another monster.  I got a great deal on a 20 yard spool of 3/4"  grosgrain ribbon in ivory. When I got it the PP thought I was nuts and asked, what are you going to do with THAT MUCH ribbion.  After seeing me do this loopy- do thing on a black bolero jacket I am making for one of actresses he thinks it's really cool.  I fear what project he may come up with for me.

BTW I love how 1880-1890'a out fits look but diety help me me with the bustles!  The PP is laughing that I might as well be doing window shade the number of rings, loops, grommets and other lacing I have to do. Oy!  When I get those projects I'll post them in mundane.
As for the fuzzlet's out fit for TRF, I canalized an old lace petticoat for a girls dress in my show.  There was 2 yards of of a 9 " strip of lace petticoat left.  Funny enough, if I add an elastic waist band to it, it made the Fuzzlet a perfect petticoat for under her new outfit.  That saved us money, and now I only need .75-1 yard of lace, and it will be good to go.  Yay!

I'm soooo weak when it comes to new fabric...

I have soooo (jumped) fallen off the wagon.  I may need an intervention.  :-\

I've been pretty good about not buying new fabrics JUST because, y'know... they're pretty, or I'm suddenly inspired to make something new when I see them... or they're on sale.

I DID go to the Hancock Fabrics Veteran's Day Sale, however... and I DID make one impulse purchase while I was there... but it was a last minute addition to an already listed project, and it was DEEPLY discounted... so maybe that one wasn't too bad.  All but one of the rest of the purchases I made that day were for a new project, but it's for new foundation pieces (simple skirt and chemise) for my daughter, because of a seriously lucky Moresca Ebay find, so I don't feel too badly about those, either.  I ended up paying less than $32 for around $90 worth of fabrics, and all of them earmarked for specific projects... so maybe I wasn't as bad as all that, after all.  ;)

(And maybe we just won't mention the batiks I've been gathering bit by bit, for the last several years, for the Silver Squirrel-esque patchwork skirt project that may or may not ever actually get started... )

My list for right now:

Finish the 1860's gown based off this dress  (http://extantgowns.blogspot.com/2013/08/american-civil-war-era-dress.html)
Make my silk taffeta (Stash!) 1860's ball gown
Finish the 1860's underpinnings (chemises, bloomers, ect.  The corset is done!)
Make a couple of winter bonnets for the 150th Anniversary of Gettysburg

After that, I need to make an 1820's corset, an 1820's ball gown, and probably and 1820's hairpiece

Then, maybe, I can make my Turkish and Italian stuff I need to make for 12th night!

See?  We don't have ANY of these type of events to attend, not anywhere around here.  Maybe if we did I would branch out into other eras.  I'm just happy we now have a Steampunk Convention in the fall, a Medieval Festival and then Ren Faire in the spring, and a Costuming convention (pretty much anything goes, although it does have a changing "theme" every year) in the summer.  It's more than some places, although apparently it's next to nothing compared to some places!

The local costumers guild causes all kinds of fun around here. They do dickens christmas, a titanic thing, a spring Edwardoan Tea, when there is a new movie a new theme there, and don't forget they are part of the Ren faire around here with meet and greets.  Oh you can find them, you just have to know where to look.

Except that we're not down THERE... we're in OKC, and our costumers group used to meet for tea once a month or so, and there were 3-4 of them.  They din't have soirees, and now they are reduced to a facebook group, period.  We DO have a Steampunk Tea every now and then, though, and those are better attended, but still not a big event, they are just a casual get together for chatting and the occasional craft workshop... in costume.  Hour and a half to two hours, tops.  Never an evening function, or a ball, or anything like that.  There WILL be a Dicken's stroll in a few weeks, in one of the small historic towns nearby, outside, in the cold, in December... but even that is only a short 2 hour event, and it's less for socializing than it is for being "seen".

I started keeping a project log.  That way I know what I have going on so I don't "over burden"  myself.  Anytime I have a project I want to make I add it to the list.   I did get 4 projects off the list this week, but how did I end up adding 4 more to it in the same time???  I thought the goal was to get things OFF the list?  Not add to it. :)

I am sad to say I did a "bad" thing.  I had 3 copier boxes full of cotton and cotton blend scraps.  I gave them away to 3 quilting sisters.  2 days later they 'repay' me with a  huge tub of 1.5+ yard lengths of upholstery fabrics, silks, and velvets.  /sigh

2 ruffs-need laces and final fittings.
Merida dress for grand daughter-needs hemming and snaps on the upper sleeve straps for a quick release option in the heat.  I need to re-do the neck laces, I can't get them to look right.

Hubby busted me sneaking in a bag of colored cotton remnants-I kinda, sorta promised the Queen a  Tudor Rose banner for her tent....which needs to be done in 2 weeks.
I still need a yard of twill or light canvas in a natural color for the actual banner. I think I have a dowel I can stain to hang it on.

Yeah well... I have to say I want want is in that tub.  Too much yummy stuff in there.

Ok, I have to admit something.  If tell me there is no way I can do something, I will set out to prove you wrong.  My daughter's teacher asked me on Monday if I could make her and her daughter an under bust corset for next Wednesday.   The next day she said, not to worry about it because there is no way I could do it.   / Sigh .....  So, I couldn't sleep last night and proceeded to start an under bust corset for her at 9 pm and night and finish it the same night.  I used all stash fabric, boning, and grommet.  What was funny was the family didn't know I had even made anything I had cleaned up after myself so well.  I was SUPPOSE to finish the 4  Christmas presents, and do the Victorian bodice mock up, and maybe even pull out the orange wool for my dress. Well there is always tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday, right????  :o

I've tried to do a sew along, or a stitch and witch with local people but never seem to get anyone to commit.

She is sending me me her daughter's measurements so I can make one for her as well.  I'm using the stash fabric I got for that.   As for owing me,  we and I have worked out a great trade of services program.  She has business of her own and since her by hour services are the same as mine.  It balances out.  We both get what we need :)

btw when I was digging through the tub last night I found oodles of trim yardages, and antique buttons / sigh  You KNOW these will have to be made into something.

Purple cotte- needs all the eyelets
Other purple dress- needs eyelets and seam finishing - going to overlock so there is minimal bulk.

Skirted doublet - draft collar, cut lining and skirts, make buttons and hand sew button holes - find where the skirt pattern went

Screaming red hand sewn wool kirtle- Needs the left sleeve set and then done. (save I need to make pin on sleeves for it too...)

What pattern do you use, or do you draft your own?

Rowen it is a hood that may have evolved into the gable. I did a small post about it back in 2012 *mumble*

The pattern is from the Queen's Servants.

Mundane sewing was completed, so tried to move on to the other outstanding projects.

Mock up of new bodice- went great but really need another seamstress friend or I need to haul out my dress dummy.
Cold weather wool dress- Started to lay this out and found that the fabric "talking" to me saying, that is not what I want to be made into, so back to drawing board.  I may end up making a wool, 1870's gown that I can wear with my steam punk stuff, and during dicken's fest when it is cold.
Sir Roland Project- told to put on hold because not ready to be worn.
Super Secret Pp project-  Got fabric swatches ordered, pattern cut out, and just need to get enough fabric for mock up.  This thing is looking to be 10 yards of fabric !
Fuzzlet's special princess project:  Found a discontinued pattern in my stash that is exactly what I need, placed it in the 'next project' box so I can easily find it.
Patchwork coat project:  Started sewing up fabric scraps to make yardage for coat.  So far I have got 2 yards at 45 inches wide, but to make sure there is little "repeat", I am making it 60 inches wide and build from there.  Now I just need to finalize the look I want.  I keep going back and forth from Russian Cossak coat, to victorian tail coat, to square neck long coat with alot of flare in the back.
Fuzzlet Cape: Found the yardages of polar fleece I have, but can't decide if I want to do a circle cloak or a more shaped one.
Victorian Petticoat:  I have this laid out and I have yet to sew it up.
New flannel bloomers:  I have these laid out but not cut it out.
