Title: Faire Favors and Tokens
Post by: Magister on May 12, 2008, 09:03:27 AM
Welcome to the RF.com Faire Favors and Tokens Thread

This thread is for everyone to post their favorite designs or tokens and favors. It doesn't matter what it is - if you're proud of it show it off. As usual, just a few rules to help keep everything straight.

Rules for Posting

1. This thread is for faire favors and token postings and discussions ONLY. Please do not post random comments about the sky, grass, or kittens - unless you are giving them away as favors.

2. Please be respectful of those that take the time to post their work.

3. Have Fun!

Pardon picture quality & size my phone isn't the best for pictures but you get the idea.

A little polymer clay, embossing powder and other assorted madness = one Phoenix shaped favor for this year. 2 done 48 to go, maybe I should get put on bedrest just so I can get these finished. ;D

I don't have pictures of my actual favors yet but no two are alike... apart from the fairy charms I'm using.  I'll take pics tonight and post them... and then get my butt working on finishing the rest.

Captain Bacardi will tell you I am the queen of finding strange beads and charms.  Those particular charms I order through a lady on etsy who orders them from a company who specializes in wholesale jewelry pieces... Tierra Cast is the company's name.  There is some kind of minimum order rule(s) that apply which is why I simply let her know what I need and when and she and I do combined orders.

Element of Air:

I am giving them away, mostly to people I meet at my home faire, The Sterling Renaissance Festival.  I designed them and had a company make them for me.

This was my first time working OR going to our local Faire...it was such a hoot, I can't believe I missed it all those other times!!  We are working on coming up with a coursing demo and making much needed improvments in our space in the Scottish encampment as well.  I have heard people talking about and have seen at a distance some favors from past faires...I am a bit confused as to just what the " requirements" are for these.  Some of them look really professional and then there are those at the other end of the spectrum, but look great!  I am wondering what do's or don'ts you might have to share re: favors , the way they are presented, the way the attach...pretty much anything!  Does anyone ever do pieces that can be added to the following year??
....come on, spill it~!

I believe favors are anything you want them to be.  As long as it fastens in some way I don't believe there are any set rules or strict guidelines.  Least I hope not for the gods know I didn't follow any!

Craft to your little hearts content!

I too, am curious about "Favors"...

Is there some "Protocol" as to giving and getting them?
How should one display a "Favor"?

...more to follow.

Here are my first favors...I gave them out this year at GARF. I'm attending CRF this year, so I'll take some with me to pass out there too. I've learned that favors can be anything...usually they are able to be fastened to clothing (like mine are pins) but they don't have to be. They are to be passed out to ren friends or cast or performers that you enjoy. I gave favors to the Nickel Shakespeare Girls and to my fave musical group Three Quarter Ale this year. I hope to meet more people from the forum and will be happy to share favors with them too. You can exchange favors with others, if they make them as well...its a token, from you to show your appreciation for someone. The design on mine is a fleur de lis...I have this tattoo...so, I thought it was something to remind people of me, but also fit the theme of faire! My favors were very easy to make...and a lot of fun. I used a stamp on "shrinky dink" plastic and baked it. Once cooled, I glued them to the round wooden backing and attached pins to the back...I wrote my name and the faire initials on the back of the pin so people remembered who and when it was from. I hope all this helps...I'm a newbie to favors, but this has been my experience! Enjoy!! Have fun making them!

Here's another example...this is Joni Minstrel, from the Georgia Renaissance Festival. Her favors are displayed on her hat...I know others who make a sash to wear on their belts to attach favors...when they run out of room on their lapels, bodices, hats...etc!

I've heard the piece of cloth that is sewn specifically for favors called a brag swag or something of the like.
Some people wear every single favor ever given to them, while others, only wear some very special to every faire/season they attend. I have not made my favors yet but Element of Air and I are having our little favor making party next week when I drive down to see her.

I thought I'd take a photo of the favors/favor like gifts that were given to me this past season of Scarborough. There's a lot of great memories attached to these...

The SF Town Crier ribbon was given to me by my friend, ladymysty on the old board, who was Apprentice Town Crier at Scarby this past season. Usually only the kids would get these for doing stupid human tricks. But I wanted one of these ribbons so I told her that I'd do a stupid human trick. What entailed though, was taking a handfull of the roasted Kings Nuts and walking out to near one of the seated areas and yelling loudly for all to hear, "Not only are these nuts warm, but they're hairless!" ...oh did I mention, I had to yell it three times? :P

White orange and red fathered favor was given to me by Element of Air, the English coat of Arms from Lady Guiniviere aka Guinny, the handcuffs from Stefan de Deva, the RF in runes on wood from JM Gryphon, the rose from Lady Ann of Draycott, and the treasure chest from Trigger.

Sure does make me miss everyone...  :-*

Well, darn.  My son & his family are involved in SCA over in Sacramento, CA.   After reading through this thread, it looks like I'm going to have to re-think the little coin sacks my son wanted me to knit up for favors since items seem to need to be pinned on?  This is what my little sacks look like:

They're simple little knit cotton sacks that have a long enough knit cord to loop over a belt.  Now to figure out what to knit that can have a pin attached and be small enough to put onto a hat or sash!

Time to put on my thinking cap ...

I wouldn't rethink your idea.  Everyone can always use more little poches to stash little items in.  I think the pouch looks really good.  A favor can be any thing you want it to be. If the person wants to pin it on they can always use a saftey pin or even one of the other favoes they have to attach some place.
Title: Re: Faire Favors and Tokens
Post by: susannah on September 04, 2008, 09:25:48 AM
I agree with WindChime...It's always nice to have another pouch on the belt. If they'd like, people could even use that to pin favors to as well. Your design is great and the pouch is wonderful. I wouldn't change it.

Thanks for the encouragement to go ahead with the little belt pouches.  I mentioned it to my grand daughter that I was going to be making a couple dozen for her Aunt & Uncle and she immediately wanted to know if I could make some for her friends in the finer chenille yarns for the ladies!  Oooookay.  I know what I'm going to be doing!

Thanks again,

My sister, Lady Pegos, and I made our favors today.

They're made out of FIMO.  Mine are supposed to look like dragonflies (the wings I wear are dragonfly wings).  And Lady Pegos made turtles (Pegos = Galapagos, she studied there)

I don't have a picture of hers, but here are mine .... there are pins on the back.

I will be making some every weekend due to me running out I am sure of it. I am not sure where I might locate you but I can say that I can be found every day at 11:45 right in front of Lord Randolphs Chain mail booth getting ready for the parade. As well as after the parade I will be in the fashion show at 12:30. So you can meet me there if you like! ^_^

Hope to see you soon! YAY for TRF in one week!

I really like them, Cass. Maybe a little bit of beading or a swash of paint...needs some white to it! :)

I'm in the process of making a swag rag to put all of my favors on but that's not going so well. The fact that I don't have a sewing machine makes it interesting so all sewing is done by hand.

Not to mention the favors I need to make this week. >.<

Thanks Elo, I was going to put some kinda shimmer on them then perhaps glaze them or something. I am not really sure but that is the base and even if I can not get anything else added to them, at least they are all put together and could be given as is. But I might find something else really cool to add to them. ^_^

Those are very nice favors, Element of Air.  Did you use a mold?

I used white shimmery eye shadow on some beads I made not too long ago and it turned out pretty nice.  I baked it on the surface of the clay, but you can mix the eye shadow with the glaze, too.

I would love to say that i did not use a mold but alas, i did! I am thinking about putting a shimmer pigment on them and then placing a glaze over that to seal them from everything.

I've struggled with coming up with favors probably for about 3 seasons till finally in Kentucky
I met someone who had given an idea lots of life and was extremely kind enough to pass it along
now I've just got to get the basics down pat & paint them differently
I'm a bit skittish as I'm trying to make it my own and not look like theirs
I've got permission from the original designer (thank you again) - i just need to get artsy and crafty
hopefully I'll have some to hand out at CRF

it's hard coming up with something original and i give major props to those that can
and am very thankful to those that pass on their ideas to help others
all the favors i have are special to me & remind me of that friendship
they also help remember those that have gone on and special events

Ooo, a glaze would be extra pretty! With shimmer! :)
I found this really cool multi-colored bag at a local store and I altered it and it's perfect for favors and tokens, even with a small little zipper pocket on the inside for my favors to give and small things so it'll be perfect for the light stuff. Can't wait to show it to you next weekend!

I definitely will Taffy Saltwater! If you find me on the opening weekend and I don't have any more, don't fret, I will be there every weekend with at least 30 favors on me in all different colors.

Oh and Eloquent, I did add the glaze with shimmer, some have silver, some gold, and some a light bronze. Really really pretty! I also need to find a pouch to carry them all in from my hip, but it does need to be light enough to wear with my chain mail. *Starts Searching* I might just make one....

There's a very good chance I will be making a move to San Antonio soon - very soon - for work.  I love San Antonio but the timing is just awful - will be there at least opening weekend & Thanksgiving Friday.  Fudge.

...I also need to find a pouch to carry them all in from my hip, but it does need to be light enough to wear with my chain mail. *Starts Searching* I might just make one....

I just made a really quick and easy no-sew pouch this morning before Middlefaire based on something suggested on here somewhere.  Here it is:

Quote from: jcbanner on September 03, 2008, 10:17:44 PM
...my pouch is made from a large piece of suede cut into a circle (about a 20" dia, I'm guessing)  but I don't hang it by the drawstrings. did that for a year and got tired of it always swinging on my side and having to untie it from my belt 1st if I needed my something inside of it.  I took a scrap of leather from making a belt about 8" long and attached it to the pouch on the side oppisite of where the drawcord gets tied.  its very easy to attach a strap to any pouch with a few chicago screws that can be found in any store that has farm or horse stuff in it.

You just cut a big circle and poke holes about 1-2" from the edge all around for a drawstring.  The fabric I used was a wool sweater that was already somewhat felted so it won't unravel.  I think fleece would work well.  It was a lifesaver at faire today.  I'm going to use it again for my can tab favors I'm working on for TRF.

So now I have some more favors and this is the first batch I had made, just add some glitter shimmer in bronze, gold, and silver to the faces.
(I posted one images of these already)

Then I have Second Edition / Version 2! Oooo Ahhh!

These took some more time and have slightly larger not so fluffy feathers on them. The faces also have been completely coated with the metallic pigment before they were baked rather than putting as much as would hold after they were baked (that is what happened for the First Edition.)

YAY Favors. I don't think there is a way to date them with the year and Fair unfortunately. not enough room on them to do so easily.

I'm working on these for TRF (Nov 1 weekend).  My grandson, Carter, has AHO - a rare genetic disorder.  Mint green is the awareness color.

Are these ok or 'too personal' ?

Alessandra -

My new favors are personalized, and they are not for such a noble or worthy cause. I see no reason for you not to show support for your grandson, and anyone fortunate enough to receive one of your favors should be proud and happy to do the same.

Thanks.  This is my first year to make favors and I didn't want to offend anyone by giving something too personalized.  My little man is the perfect inspiration.  :)

He's 2 years old and weighs 58 lbs.  A tad hard to miss -  he'll be the most cutest darn Robin Hood at the faire !  ;)

Wonderful favors everyone!

I've just finished mine. The glass hearts were ordered last year but unfortunately didn't arrive in time for Faire (they were shipped from China) so they are favors this year. This is my first year to make favors. I hope folks will like them.

I absolutely LOVE these all, you're (all) such terrific artists and they're beautiful. ^_^ I haven't started mine, but alas, I have but a little money yet much enthusiasm! I've not started mine yet, but top priority is to buy myself a digital camera before AZ Faire in the Spring so I will be improvising with all my materials at home (I have quite a bit, so I'm not too worried) and am looking forward to it. Cheers to your generosity, my ladies (and m'lords who I've not seen speak up as yet)!

I've begun mine, but as I was making the first one, I realized that they would make excellent favors to give to my wedding guests, so I kind of made them more to fit that occasion.  I'll come up with something else for my Faire Friends, and they'll be just as nice!

By the way, I do wear mine on my hat, as you can see in the pic above, however, I now have so many, I'm going to have to consider a sash!  The hat be gettin' a bit heavy on the noggin' now.  :)

I've got an idea for some favors- dangly ones.  I'd rather not use a safety pin to attach them.  Is anybody out there aware of something like a tie tack that has a ring of some sort on the front so that I could hang my favors from?  I've looked at all the big online jewelry findings stores online, and haven't found anything yet.  Any ideas??

Tim T,

My Renaissance Family Motif is the Penhallow Tree of Life, Every member of our famliy wears one, as well as my "extended" family. So, I did my Favors in a similar vein, Dangle Green Glass Leaves off of a stick pin to represent "Leaves" off of our Tree...

I found the "Stick Pins" at Fire Mountain Gems and Beads:

http://www.firemountaingems.com/details.asp?PN=H205177FD (here is a link)

I found them to be inexpensive, and durable...
I made about 100 favors and spent less than $50.00.

I was totally inspired by the favors Faye Cutler posted ... so, kudos to her for the idea. ;)

This is what I'm making for MNRF this year, though it's not quite complete yet, I'm waiting on an order of miniature shells, so each of these bottles will have a shell or two as well.

(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3654/3493885357_926b2d6939.jpg) (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3654/3493885357_992af3c379_o.jpg)
(Click image for larger size to see some of the detail better)

There is a little miniature treasure map, some loose sand (crushed recycled glass silica sand substitute), and as I mentioned there will be a real shell or two in there as well, when those get here.  I just wrapped the pin back and the bottle neck with some embroidery floss, leaving a bit between the two so it can swing freely.  Only problem with the crushed glass sand is that it kind of fogs up the glass a bit if it gets stirred up too much.  so, I'm debating whether or not to just encase everything in some clear resin or just leave it as is, I kind of like it loose and able to move around.

If anyone is curious... this is the map:

slightly modified image I found through google image search, shrunk down to be 1" tall.. printed out a few sheets full (I was able to fit 90/sheet) then aged the paper using the good ol' tea dying method.. I think it came out pretty good. :)

That is really cool!  Well done, sir!

I wonder if you could use the gravel they make for model trains or diorama making so that you have a larger particle in lieu of the sand?
Title: Re: Faire Favors and Tokens
Post by: tcindie on May 02, 2009, 02:22:50 PM
I had thought about that too.. Though at this point I'd rather not dump any more cash into these if I don't have to.. I think the crush glass sand will probably be ok, and it was pretty darn cheap too.  If anybody has a need for some, I've got more than enough... bought a 5lb bag of it because I couldn't justify paying twice the cost of the item just for shipping, so now I have oh... 4.5lbs more than I need or so. haha

I had some ideas for favors this year and sent them out to a small group of people and selected one to use.

It is two hands grasping each other in a hand shake with the words "Well Met".

Here is the preliminary artwork.

What do you think?

This would either be a die-pressed design with raised sections which are polished and lower sections which are textured and darker/antiqued, or a 3-D cast pin which has a more 3-D appearance and has a variety of heights to increase contrast.  These would be in an antique silver or antique bronze or antique gold or antique copper finish.  It would be 3 inches wide with two pin posts on the back and possible a hidden loop on the back so it could be worn as a necklace pendant.

Regards,

CB

Nicely done Cobalt.  :)

I have been inspired to make favors but I need some advice. I have finally, after four years ,come up with something that will convey *me*. Problem is, I am not a beader and don't quite know how to put them together. There will be two beads and they need to hang vertically as the holes go top to bottom. 1)I wanted to hang them on a tie tac sort of pin,  but can't find a good price..anyone have a good source? 2) Is there such a thing as a tie tac with a hole to attach a wire ( for the beads to dangle) ?

Thanks all.

A good number of the pins will be made since I am extremely happy at how they came out.

I decided to sell a number of them and posted an ad in the buy-sell-trade section of the forum.

I give these away at The Sterling Renaissance Festival which is my home faire but figured people might like one who don't go to Sterling.

I've seen several favors with ribbons hanging from the holes on these with a variety of things threaded onto them.  Perhaps your beads could do the same?

I've got plans this summer to match another batch of favors because I've given away the 50+ that I made last summer...

my question is, do I make them the exact same as the ones I made last summer, or do I go for something a little different? Make different flower/bead colors or different paint colors on the stone?

Cobalt, those are awesome!  A friend has promised to teach me about working with pewter during the local faire run, but I don't think I'll have the nerve to share photos of what I manage to make!

Anna - I can't recall every seeing something like a tie tack with holes ... pins with plain bar backs usually have holes in them (Hobby Lobby sells them in packages, often on sale) and some craft stores sell pins the don't have a  coil - it's just a loop.  There are also pins that are made to dangle charms and such (http://www.jewelrysupply.com/jewelry_findings/base_metal/kilt_pins.html).  And headpins would work to dangle them from - and they're fairly easy to find.

eloquent - Depends on what you want to do!  My faire favors this year are very "Colorado" with the snowflake, and I decided to pass them out in Colorado anyways, even if they were more fitting for California.  Last year I used different colored inks on the favors I gave atr my home faire and the faires I visited.

I should explain ... this year my faire favors were simple, I'll try to take a photo to post.  I found small smooth-edged glass tiles at Hobby Lobby, and stamped an almost-Celtic snowflake on them with a StazOn ink.  Then I added a clear coat of modge podge (which ended up being a bit sticky, so next time I'll find another kind of sealer).

Thanks for the feedback Blushing and Grov. I'll have to poke about in Michaels and JoAnns ad see what they have. The bar pin with the holes might do the trick...

Eloquent I've seen some peoples favors that remain essentially the same each year with a small change that might commemorate a particular gathering or the years date. You could certainly change them completly though if you'd like.
Title: Re: Faire Favors and Tokens

Eloquent, a slight change might be nice, but your favors were very pretty the way they were.  Of course, If you go changing them too much, everyone you have already given one to will want another.  ;)

I need to get me rear in gear, again, and make some more of mine.  Is it already June????  My goodness!

I keep changing mine year to year, but I think I've hit something solid. I have the sheep/ship wheels from 2008 that I like to give out to general folks (mainly bc I STILL have a ton of the parts to make them), but I also have the oh-so-fabulous message in a bottle favors that I like to give to people who are special to me. So far it's mostly been Castleteers getting those, but I plan on giving out more. Then there's also the little rum bottle ones, but those only go to very few people as I am willing to part with a very little bit of my Pyrat rum. ;) Anyways, here you go:

It depends on how many you want to give out, Bonny, I mean you want to give out a limited amount at a certain time, think about how many people you want to give said to. I know at first I made a list...and then starting giving them out. And ran out. And then made more. And ran out again. I think I made another round of favors, and am about to run out. The first round was...probably thirty or so...then between the second and the third, there had to be at least another thirty to forty.

With many coming for the invasion on All Hallows Eve, I know I'm going to have to made another round...but then again, this is just what I do.

They are 1 1/8th " tall and i have not measured but if they hold 1/2 oz. i bet it's alot. It is the
first week of Sterling and i have given 20 away and everyone is having a blast playing with them.
Even been suggested that i start making them to sell, but that would ruin the spirit and fun
of making them i think. Would rather make and gift, means more to both then.

I love everyone's work, btw, and have lurked here for a very long time squirreling away ideas for my own favors, so thanks, everyone, for being my muse/s...   :D

Oz, I'm so excited to finally see the finished product!!!  I know you've been developing the idea since this winter, and they turned out to be absolutely amazing!!!  Good show!!!

I started making favors this year. I am currently buying the charm as they go on sale (every other week) at hobby lobby, but my rogue says I should just order them as a large batch online (at full price though....not 50% off).
The idea came about as my faire name is Lissame Rhosyn (Rhosyn means rose).
I am currently threading a red ribbon through the clasp up top so it can be tied to whatever the receiver likes.

OH YES YOU DO!!!. I used E6000 to glue a group of pewter bunnies doing dirty things to my boob this season at the shop. My boob started BURNING! E6000 heats and irritates skin as it cures.

OH MY GOODNESS!!   :o  :o  :o  You didn't?!  I can't even stand having that stuff on my hands for very long!

o_O;;; I had no idea that crap got hot!! WHY WOULD YOU PUT THAT ON SKIN!? Chemical burns = BAAAAAAAAD!

I try to be careful when working with any glue, and when that stuff gets on my hands I'm really good about washing it off quickly. I work in a lab, super paranoid about getting chemicals on my skin. :)

It's because I'm a freak and I thought it was funny. Those bunnies were glued to my boob and it was freaking hilarious! But see, not only were they glued to my boob, but they were glued to each other in dirty positions. It was GREAT!

I've never made (or received now that I think about it) any faire tokens or what not before. But looking through this thread, makes me want to try and make some! I am trying to think of things I can do on a relatively short amount of time, since faire starts in like....2 weeks or less >> so I was thinking of making a bunch of tiny clay mushrooms/toadstools, and probably just putting little hoops on them so they could be pinned/keychained/hung etc. I'm a fae...I was trying to think of something in theme. XD Maybe next year I will work on something that has a more "personal" touch to it, and I was thinking about making little tags so people remember who they got them from, what year, what faire....maybe on the back my character's myspace or something so people can find me when it's off season. ^^

I saw someone use shrinky dinks as a tag. You can print on the plastic film with a printer, cut it out, bake and voila!

Ooohh that's not a bad idea. I was thinking of making little "old paper" looking tags, and maybe laminating them so they didn't get destroyed. I have a heat laminator in my house thankfully. XD

I've never made favors before...and hadn't recieved any until the Midwinter exchange when I got one of Pinn's threerose pins she posted earlier! I figured with RenDevous coming up I should come up with something...in the past 10 minutes I have (in my head since I'm in class) pretty much designed my favors and my pouch thing I'm going to make to carry mine in that I can pin any I recieve on to! yay! I think I'm going to make some simple dangly beaded things like several people have done before. Since I love disney princesses more than any adult should...and if i can find them, I'm going to get disney princess beads/charms to hang from the bottom...and the beads can all be color coordinated to the princess...something silly like that. I think it will be a great way to tie in who I am...especially since at Rendevous I'll be i my first noble garb ever as Snow White! yay! Finishing the garb is priority right now but as soon as I'm done I'll get the stuff together for favors...

I'm already in the process of making 3 different favors for this year.I make them for both of my parents and myself. Theirs were some what easy to think of mine is the problem , but after some debating I think I know what I want. I'll post pictures as soon as I get some made. I love working with the poliymer clay for them.

I never got time to make my tokens for this year, boo! :( I felt really bad once we got to faire, and I saw Merilee Effingham's stuff covered in tokens, I would have loved to add one to her collection! Maybe next time, I guess. :)

And now I'm trying to figure out cool tokens for my new character, but I want them to involve the theme of my character (which is halloween/samhain themed), so I was thinking jackolanterns with different faces/colors (carved clay pins or pendants). I would also have little individually wrapped candies to go with whatever I make....how could I be the spirit of halloween/samhain without giving some treats? (Just gotta keep them hidden from the kids or I'll be tackled and robbed! lol)

Ya know, I thought about changing my favors this year as I have every other year in the past, but I *love* the favors I have now (and I get a SUPER DEAL on the charms), and I put so much work into them that I think I may just stick with them. Everyone loves them so far and I feel like they're just... Me! Only thing I've changed is the beaded charm colors bc I can't get the original blue beaded charms anymore, and the light blue ones are becoming harder and harder to find....so I've been using purple ones too. I guess it's a change...not much of one.

I think it depends on how many faires you will attend and how many times at each faire.  We got almost every weekend to Bristol, plus 5 or 6 other faires every year, so you run into a lot more people than if you go to a one weekend smaller faire.  If you're going to RenDezvous or St. Molden's weekend at BARF,  you'll want a lot, because there will be lots of RF members there.  Some people like to exchange favors with as many people as they can, so you'd want more.  Otherwise, some people make very few favors and just give them out to a few special friends.

It depends on what you want and where you're going.

I try to make as many as I'll need in a year, but luckily with keeping the same design this year I won't have to make as many as every other year. I order the charms in batches of 50 each, and right now I'm sitting on about 100 loose ones (it was the "make mine a double" sale!). Same for the beaded charms that I get on another site. :)

So my clay tokens have finished firing now I gotta figure out what to do with them. I was thinking of stringing them on some yellow, blue and green thin ribbon with a few beads and a bell but as for the actual charms should I paint them or leave them in the raw?

It all depends on how many you would like to give out to friends and people that you meet. When I make mine I make around 20-30, I have seen other R/F people make 50-100. So make as many as you want and have fun. :)

I would never expect one in return.  Especially if the other person is new and doesn't have them (yet), is saving theirs for people they know, or doesn't have many.  Giving favors is just that, a gift.  If you are concerned about the cost or whatever then you can make the decision of how to give yours.  Say to only people that give you one first or people that you have known for a while.
Some of the favors I have seen on here seem expensive and the givers give them to EVERYONE!  Totally cool.  But it is always up to the giver.  Have fun! ;)

I made new favors this year while working out new processes at work on our laser cutters. I spent $5 on the wood, and twice that on the tack-back pins, but I ended up with a bunch to give out to friends. I took clip art and turned it into a file that I could use with our cutters. I also made a few tudor roses that I give out while in noble garb, but I like these a lot more!  ;D

Lady R, those are gorgeous!!!  How fantastic to have a laser cutter at your disposal, and how very fun to be able to render Faire images into woodcuts... I'm terribly envious!  What a very creative idea!  Does your machine use vector files, or did you have to convert it to some other file type?

Have you thought about the potential for profit that this would represent if you could rent the use of that machine and software for a few hours on the occasional weekend?  Faire inspired holiday tree ornaments, plaques... oh, the list could be endless!

I'm probably adding nametags...maybe with shrinkydinks as I saw someone else post in this thread. I'm making 40. My first favors...I hope people like them! (I've done swaps for Girl Scouts for years and years, so this was right up my alley.  ;D )

I have 20 made so far, and since my favor pouch is completely full, I think I'll wait until later in the season to see if I need to make more. Now I have to figure out a way to wear the two I'm keeping and any others people might give me...:-)

Yeah, I'm a slacker...  This is a shot of the pirate favors I made for TRF... LAST year.  ::)

I used Antiqued Gold Rub-n-Buff to get rid of the shiny brass finish on the charms (although you can't really tell in this pic), wired the ships wheels to pin backs (that was a pain), made all the bead dangles myself with brass wire and glass beads, and even made the jump rings.  It took forever, but it was fun...

Great Job Rani!  Love them!

I have to figure out something to do for next year!  too much time has wasted away this year.

With my first faire of 2011 coming up in a few weeks, I've just ordered the beginning of my 2011 favors!

I'm going to string all three of them on a safety pin with colored beads and a ribbon with my faire name/the year. I ordered 35 of each for now. It wound up being like $1 per favor but they're SO cute and SO "me"! I may have to end up ordering more for my home faire in the fall, but this should get me through my weekend at my spring faire! I'll have to be frugal with them! I'm super excited to get my charms!!  ;D

Ok just curious, does anyone ever do favors for their babies or children? I have an awesome idea for favors for my little boy but not sure if I should. Thoughts?

To give to the children, or in honor of them? ???  Cos at the bottom of page 5, someone made a ribbon charm in honor of their grandson as public awareness of sorts for an illness.

I personally see no problems with it, if that is your meaning. Having no charms (err, well having never been to a faire yet) I for one would gladly wear a personalized charm.

They would be for my little boy to give out.  Well, actually, I'd be giving them out for him lol.  He's going to be a pirate and I thought about getting some little pacifier charms from a party store and paint them gold like baby pirate treasure, and then give them out.  I figured it would be cute :)  Just wondering if anyone has done something similar to this.

After being "misrouted", taking about three days longer than they were supposed to in shipping, and two weeks after I ordered them, my charms finally arrived and I've started work on my 2011 favors! Just in time--I'm attending the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival this weekend!

All this talk about favors..I cannot wait until I get my first one!

I am picking up that usually these are "earned" in a manner, i.e tricks, goofing off, ect. Is that typically true?

I give my favors freely, mostly to people I've met and spoke with, also if we meet any RF members at faire.

I've also given favors to a couple of small children, when they've approached to ask if they could have their pictures taken with us.

Never asked anyone to do anything to get one, nor have any of my friends asked either us before giving one, or others to whom they gave favors.  Maybe it's a regional thing?

Same here ;D.   I primarily give them to friends, favorite vendors and sometimes to a particularly hardworking minor cast member whom I might not know personally but is obviously going the extra mile to engage the patrons.  This is important to me, since I have attended a few faires where the primary cast members stayed in a group and barely spoke to anyone other than each other.  I acknowledge that this makes it easier for them to stay in character, and some actors are just too busy with complicated scenarios to spend much time playing with the crowd.
That responsibility falls to the lesser players who bust their humps to make sure the paying customers feel like they are a part of the show.   I seek them out to let them know that I appreciate their work.

I third the idea. Of course that means I would need to think of something new to do since I took last year off. I try to make a different style each year plus I make one for Lady Helen and Sir Jim also. So in total I normally make 150 - 300 favors for the year so I think everyone sees why I took a year off.

I have a question about the "etiquette" of handing out favors, if I may.

I do not hand our favors, but a few weeks ago at the Sherwood Celtic Fest I saw a Captain Jack lolling around the lanes, shouting " Faire Tokens, faire tokens! " or something to that effect. My experience with receiving tokens ( I got a few last year from the TRF fairies ) was that one procured them by interacting with whomever had them. When I saw the captain shouting that he had favors, it kinda... grated me. I prefer to get favors by interaction, but is what the Jack did also "acceptable"?
Title: Re: Faire Favors and Tokens
Post by: Rani Zemirah on October 12, 2012, 11:21:23 PM
I'm wondering if what he was hawking wasn't one of the cheaply bought or made little things that some "characters" (NOT to be confused with CAST characters, you understand) hand out to everyone they encounter in the lanes who will stand still long enough for them to do their "bit", so that they get the attention they have come looking for?  There's a huge difference between those things and the Favors that are designed, crafted and handed over to old and new friends each season by those who truly wish to give a Gift to those they meet and enjoy spending time with at Faire.

I'm guessing that if this Jack was handing them out like candy then he neither put much time OR effort into them... and likely not much expense, either.  For most, Favors are something special, and to be kept and displayed season after season... or at least rotated when you've been given so many that you no longer have room for them all!  You can definitely tell who at Faire is generally well liked, though, by the weight of their "brag rag"...  ;D

Sadly I didn't think to get one to "research" it, but I think you're right. He just seemed so flippant about it. And really, captain jack? No one remembers any of the Captain Jacks they see around faire anymore ( at least, I don't ). So why try to stand out if you can see another Captain jack across the lane from you?

Bless his heart though, he was trying..? ???

the basic piece is an item from Spare.Parts called 1" Round Clear Epoxy Stickers.  She used photoshop to create the image and to this she applied a firm felt back with glue (like Aileens tacky).  The epoxy stickers have an adhesive back so she just attached the image/felt piece to it an hot glued a pin (you can get the pins and stickers I know at Hobby Lobby or most craft stores).

Let me know it you have any other questions.

I like to give out a little something each year, to friends and as a token to entertainers and characters who go the extra mile.

Just waiting on an artist to finish the logo for my book series, and I'll digitize it, print them out and make favors with it.

Will your Lady be handing these out at DMRF next year?
I don't want to duplicate anything she is crafting too closely.
I can make a significantly different version, perhaps with a thistle.    I'm fond of dangling bits that sparkle.

There is a Facebook page for them. I've found it is dependent on the fair and if they have even heard of it before. This year was a big boom at the Kentucky renaissance festival.  A lot of people were trading and they even have a pin design people are using to identify who is a trader. If anyone is interested  here is the Facebook page: Trinkets of Ren Fest
It is a public group so anyone can join.
