Title: Wild about Harry- Potter that is!
Post by: Queen Bonnie on May 15, 2008, 02:38:58 PM
Here is a place to post about our favorite boy Wizard and doings at Hogwarts.

The next movie comes out on Nov 21st!
The Robert Tonner Doll Company has wonderful Harry potter dolls and is coming out with a Severus Snape doll.  Can't wait to see it!

Vostro Majesty,

I happen to work for a theme park, that shall remain unnamed, in sooth in Florida that has some close ties to the Harry Potter series.  I am aware of a few things going on within the park that are readying it for the public.  I cannot disclose that which will jeopardize my person, but I can attempt answer some questions.

OOH! How exciting! What fun! Where is this park? When will it open? What will you be doing? If you can answer- that is!

Ahh would this be the new Harry Potter theme park?? I'm *so* going there when it opens!

Here's a question for you, Vincente...
I heard on TV awhile ago that the park would not be employing look-alikes to play Harry and his friends at the park, but that people seeking to meet Harry and his friends "wouldn't be disappointed."

How will they do this?  :D ??? (Of course, as far as you can tell us!)

Well at the moment I will not be heading over to that section of the park.  The press has released that the within Islands of Adventure's "Lost Continent" island some changes and add-ons are being made to create "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter".  I know that the renderings showed a small snow covered village beneath the visage of a very large Hogwart's Castle.  As for the entertainment it is all rumors as to who will and will not be found in the new island.  I am not sure why they would not have any of the main three though.

It's a tad far away for me but I'd love to make a trip there when it opens!  I heard about it some time ago.  Can't wait.

I also can't wait to see Jim Broadbent as Professor Slughorn in the next movie.  Should be great!

I, too, am excited for the park :) I'm also glad that they're splitting up the last book into two movies--it'll give more room for detail and intensity! What does everyone think about "Deathly Hallows" becoming two movies?

I'm enthused! I wish they'd have done it for Order of the Phoenix too, though, that was  my favorite book and I really didn't think the film did it justice.

But, see, then we get to have Harry Potter in the theatres for a longer period of time! I'm kind of glad they're spacing it out--it allows the fans to really appreciate and digest what was seen on screen...

...That being said...I too would like to see 'Half Blood Prince' come a little sooner ;)

Did everyone hear that yesterday the actor playing Marcus Belby in the next movie was stabbed to death in a London pub?  I don't know how this will affect filming or anything as his character was rather minor and I don't know how much filming they've actually done, but it still is really sad that it happened.

This is the article from CNN:

LONDON, England (AP) -- A British teenage actor playing a minor role in the upcoming "Harry Potter" film was stabbed to death during a brawl in London on Saturday, police said.

Rob Knox, 18, was stabbed after he got caught up in a fight outside a bar in southwest London early Saturday, London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Knox plays Ravenclaw student Marcus Belby in the upcoming film "Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince," the sixth installment of the popular series set for release in November.

Warner Bros., the studio that is producing the film, said it was shocked by the news.

Knox was one of five young men taken to various hospitals after the brawl, police said. Among them was a 21-year-old who has since been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The fight did not appear to be gang-related, police added, but it puts the number of violent teenage deaths in London at 14 so far this year.

Ahhh, Harry Potter!  My tied-for-first-with-Faire obsession.  <3

We're already making plans for the HBP release, and we're hoping to find a midnight showing somewhere nearby.  ^.^

I have...mixed feelings about DH being two movies.  Yes, I'm happy about it, but at the same time, I feel that they wouldn't have to do it, had they not left so much important stuff out of the other movies.  XD  I can't help but wonder if part of the reason they're doing two movies is because they have to put a good bit of back story in, y'know?  (Then again, I, personally, wouldn't have understood the third movie at all if I'd not read the book!)  The third and fifth books are my favourites, and...well, they kinda butchered the third movie.  The fifth wasn't -terrible-, but there was a lot they missed that I feel is kind of important on down the line.  But, either way, the more Harry Potter, the better, says I!

The news of Rob Knox's death is quite sad.  Such a young man, and it's always a tragedy when a life is cut so short.  I do wonder if he'd shot any scenes yet, and if they'll keep them in the movie.  It would be a lovely tribute.

With the large group we have scheduled for the following (Celtic Christmas) weekend, let's enjoy a week of anticipation and snippets, then invade a Tomball theatre in garb on Friday night.  Cat, and Queen Bonnie if you can you need to dress up as a group you guys would love it ,it so much fun. As I said Me and my Daughters and grandkids get all dressed up and then My daughters sister in-law and her mother go, we all go to one persons house and fix garb and do make up and clothes. That1s fun in`s self.  We look so cute in our garb and we do have so much fun as we wait in line people come up to us and we get a chance to met others who are all dressed up and see what there take on the mivie is. We talk about the movie and Harry Potter books that we have read and how we think this will play out in the theaters. So even waiting in line is so much fun, We get our tickets in advance but there is always a wait to get in anyway, as so many others get advance tickets to. We talk take pic and laugh while we wait and the tv stations and radio stations are there  and you get a chance to talk to them about the movie and Harry Potter. Yes going all dressed up is fun try it with a group you will like it

The second is in Tomball.

The Grand in Conroe is alot like Tinseltown and is at the north end of Conroe. It would probably be 9.00 on a Friday. The Premire in Tomball is small, only 6 shows and at most 5.00. It's at the main intersection of 249 and 2920. The Silverado is also around 9.00 for the regular show, not sure about the Imax.

Something to think about though...IMAX theatres tend to not have really comfy seats.  They are meant for 15-30 minute movies.
I know from experience...we saw one of the Star Wars on IMAX at Moody Gardens, I was starting to hurt half way through! :P

The ImaX theater at the Minnesota zoo isn't like that at all. The seats there are pretty comfy. The ones at the higher rows right dead center are wide almost like a love seat. Way big for one person but to small for two normal sized people.  I missed seeing the last Harry Potter movie there, but a friend of mine went and said the last part of the movie was in 3-D, that would have been awesome to see that.

It wont be available in stores until December. It's just one book, not a series. The Beetle book is the book that is discussed in book 7 of the Harry Potter series. The Beetle book does not have the same characters as Harry Potter, but from what I understand, the published version is supposed to appear like it is the copy of the book that Hermoine owned.

For those that have not yet heard. the next Harry Potter film's release is being delayed till 17 July 2009.  This is not due to production difficulties but rather to take advantage of an open summer weekend in the schedule.  They think they will make more money with a July opening than they would with one in November.

So much for a group viewing during TRF.  My "Potter Withdrawl" is almost as bad as my "Faire Withdrawl".

Because of the writer's strike there's not as many movies ready for next summer. And warner Brothers has already made a ton on The Dark Knight this year.

The trailer will appear before Star Wars: Clone Wars today.

I suppose now that HP has been pushed back to the summer it doesn't have to worry about running for a month in November and then having their numbers crushed by the opening of "Twilight," which was going to be in December and is now in November.

I received my copy of Tales of Beedle the Bard from Amazon yesterday! I have not read it yet. Keeping it to savor when I finish my library book!

I picked up a copy of Beedle today at Target - I am purposefully waiting so as to savor the anticipation.  I fear we'll be jonesing w/o respite for more wizardry from Ms. Rowling.

My Christmas pressie this year from my mum - Professor McGonagall's wand & a Gryffindor pewter mug.

EDIT:  I read Beedle - my favorite tale is that of the Wizard & the Hopping Pot - what a gift of words & worlds.

I love the Gryffindore pewter mug! The wand is great too. I am still waiting to savor the book. Family Channel had the Harry Potter movies on this past weekend. Comfort movies! I never get tired of watching them.

I Love the first and second movies the best. Might be Richard Harris as Dumbledore- or the John Williams score- or who knows? We all need magick in our lives!
Lord of the Rings and Harry potter have gotten me through hard times!

You hit that nail squarely on its magic head, Bonnie. Though I like Michael Gambon very much, to me, Dumbledore and Richard Harris will always be one! And there is no substitute for John Williams...

I so havent had the time, or money for that fact, to go get the new book.  I soooooo miss reading the books.  I think I am going to have to sit down and re-read them.  I cant wait until the next movie comes out.  I know, I know the books are better, but the movies are great to watch on rainy days when the kids are driving me crazy and I want them to be calm.

LadyShadow, Christmas is around the corner.  Drop a hint - or 50 - that you want the Beedle book.  It's in the neighborhood of $12 so it won't break any banks.  Target was running a huge sale - like $7.50? - when it came out a couple of weeks ago but I don't know if that's still going.

I'm re-reading the Half-Blood Prince & am down to the last chapter or so.  Nothing like reading about the lake of Inferi at 1 a.m. - for some reason it's much scarier early in the a.m. than late in the afternoon.

It's in the air that I might be getting a gift card to Barnes & Nobles :)  Plus I had NO clue that this book was that inexpensive.  If I would have known that I would have gotten that instead of a movie.  :(  I guess just a couple of more days because Hubby and I are trying to make sure the kids are taken care of first before we start shopping for each other.

I always enjoy reading right before I go to sleep.  So I share your thoughts about reading at the late pm early am hours.

I am currently in Chapter 10 of Prisoner of Azkaban, on my 4th trip through the entire series. I started late, so I read books 1, 2, and 3 in one go right before 4 came out. I had it on reserve at the library, and read it in three days when I got it. When each additional book came around, I re-read the previous books to get into the proper spirit. I was working at Kmart when Deathly Hallows was released, so I volunteered to work the late shift for the release party, and my wife and I prepared the refreshments - Butterbeer, pumpkin juice, Ice Mice, cauldron cakes, Cockroach Clusters, and Licorice Wands. We stayed open until 1am, so we could sell the books at midnight. At 10, our normal closing time, I went upstairs to the break area and put on my Hagrid costume for the festivities. For my efforts, the store paid for all of the ingredients for the food, and I also got a giftcard for the value of the book. And, I have in my home at this moment a box from the first shipment of Book 7, as well as the cardboard cutout of Harry that we had just inside the doors to countdown the days to the release. Yes, I'm a geek, and proud of it.

Here's Halloween 2007. The costumes aren't the greatest, but it's what we could do on a limited budget.

Me as Mad-Eye Moody.

My wife Cheri as Professor Sprout.

Our daughter Chiane as Hermione Granger.

Cheri as Sprout, holding our youngest, Ian, as Harry Potter.

Cheri made the kids' cloaks, her cloak, and my vest. I spray painted the one shoe, decorated Cheri's hat, and made my staff.

Here are my souvenirs from the Deathly Hallows release:

They're sold as a boxed set at B&N - I think I paid about $20.  I also found them loose at Half-Price Books & bought the quidditch book en francaise at HPB because I just couldn't resist it.

The quidditch book is set up like a library book, as in the libary book Harry borrowed from Ron in the Sorcerer's Stone and got in trouble for having it outside.

Magical Creatures is a textbook.  What I loved about these books is the doodling & graffiti.  Charming books & as with the Beedle Bard book, a portion went to Ms. Rowling's children's charity.

Now the book I'd be glad to pay for is Severus' Potions textbook, in which he wrote the potions recipes & wand spells.  Levicorpus!

In that order, French & Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) give us this Potter spoof:

Part 1 of 4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9onI92OxBHY
part 2 of 4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjWGgWnd6Ec
part 3 of 4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIapf3G-eSM&feature=related
part 4 of 4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xodve30qfA&feature=related

Evidently that's Jeremy irons playing Snape; Miranda Richardson (who played Rita Skeeter in the movie) as Hermione; & Dawn French (who played the Fat Lady in Prisoner of Azkaban) as Harry.

Final Potter to get 2011 release

The Deathly Hallows will be released in two parts
The final instalment of the Harry Potter film franchise is to be released in 2011, it has been announced.

Fans of the boy wizard will get to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II in cinemas from 15 July.

Warner Brothers decided to split the seventh book in JK Rowling's series into two parts as it was impossible to cram its 608 pages into a single film.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is set to be released on 19 November 2010.

Stuntman David Holmes suffered serious back injuries on the set of Deathly Hallows last month practising an aerial sequence.

The set was closed for a week for investigation before being allowed to re-open by the Health and Safety Executive.

It was announced in August last year that the release date for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince would be pushed back eight months to July this year.

Warner Bros president Alan Horn said the decision was taken to guarantee the studio a major summer blockbuster in 2009.

He also blamed the Hollywood writers' strike, which hit the film industry hard in 2008.

The first five movies have made $4.5 billion (£2.2 billion) worldwide - making it the biggest film franchise in box office history, surpassing both James Bond and Star Wars.

Im still having trouble with life after potter  ive read Artemis fowl and the twilight series but nothings remotely close to hitting the same notes
If it helps I'm 23 and I love all things fantastical fairy's especially which is why i did enjoy the Artemis series

That's a great question - I wish I had a satisfactory answer because nothing has hit the notes for me either.  Of course, I don't have a great deal of time for reading.  If you haven't read them, you might want to try the Lord of the Rings, which was my introduction to fantasy back in the '70's & is a true classic.

Along the same lines as LOTR (and greatly inspired by LOTR) is Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Think of it as LOTR meets a spaghetti western in Stephen King's universe. Harry Potter is even mentioned in books 5, 6, and 7.

If you do start the Dark Tower series, make sure you get a revised edition of The Gunslinger. He started writing the DT series when he was 19, and the original, unrevised version is pretty bad, but much improved in the current revised edition.

I've had some major HP withdrawl.  I tried reading all kinds of different authors, but it's never the same.  I even read Anne McCaffrey's Pern series (about dragons).  The pace and and style of J.K. Rowling writing is hard to match.  She just creates a great world.

You could try some of the great HP fan fics online.  The one by razzberry2 on veritaserum.com is prety good.

WARNING:  The fan fic above is not finished, yet, and will leave you hanging.  She promises to get it finished, but has had some health and personal problems that have prevented it.

Man guilty of killing 'Harry Potter' actorStory Highlights[/i]
Man convicted of murder of teenage actor who starred in new "Harry Potter" film

LONDON, England (CNN) -- A habitually violent young man was convicted Wednesday of the murder of teenage actor Rob Knox, who had starred in the latest "Harry Potter" film.

Karl Bishop, 22, attacked Knox and four friends with two kitchen knives outside a bar in Sidcup, south east London, last May. He stabbed them 10 times in less than two minutes, the Old Bailey court in central London heard.

Knox, 18, had rushed out of the bar after he heard that Bishop had threatened his younger brother Jamie but he ended up being stabbed five times, once in a main artery. He died in hospital later that night.

Bystanders said Bishop's face was "screwed up in rage" as he lashed out with the two knives, the Press Association reported.

Days before the attack, the actor had finished filming on "Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince," due for international release in July, in which he played the role of Marcus Belby. He was set to reprise the part in future "Harry Potter" films.

Knox's father Colin told mourners at his funeral, including co-star Rupert Grint, that his son had been "living the dream," PA said.

Prosecutor Brian Altman told the court that the young actor's promising life was ended by a "habitual knife carrier" who believed stabbing people was an "occupational hazard" and had previous convictions for knife crime.

Bishop is due to be sentenced on Thursday.

Knife crime in Britain is a political hot topic due to a spate of recent killings of mainly young people in major cities. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has urged tougher sentences for those caught carrying knives. He told the Daily Telegraph last month: "By carrying a knife you are not only endangering the lives of others, but you are more likely to be killed, or end up in jail.

"We need to change the way young people think about knives, we need families and communities working together ... to get this message across and help stamp out knife crime and get weapons off our streets."

If I had one, I would not be willing to sell it.

CNN) -- A first-edition Harry Potter book was sold for about $19,000, according to an auction house in Dallas, Texas.

Normal copies of the Harry Potter books go for under $20, unlike the autographed first edition that sold for $19,000.

The soft-cover book was one of 200 copies printed and is a rarity compared with later editions of the popular series that were printed in the millions, the Heritage Auction Galleries said.

The book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," includes an autograph from author J.K. Rowling.

It's the first book in the Harry Potter series and was published in the United States under the title "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone."

The auction had estimated that the 223-page book would sell for as much as $12,000.

The winning bid of $19,120 bypassed expectations, but it was not the most expensive sale of Harry Potter-related items in an auction.

Last year, an 800-word prequel to the blockbuster Harry Potter novel series fetched nearly $50,000 for a writer's group and dyslexia charity.

That prequel was handwritten and signed by Rowling.

A prequel - I'd love to learn more about the Marauders, Petunia & Lily, Lucius, Severus & Dumbledore.  Or a sequel - continue the romances, Ginny's career w/the Holyhead Harpies, Harry & Ron's careers w/the Aurors, etc., who did Draco marry - there is a treasure trove waiting to be mined, which is why there is all the fanfic.  BUT I WANT MORE OF JK's HARRY! *pouts & stamps her feet*

My wife and Kids are crazy about Harry Potter. I read the first 4 books in no time at all, then I started to read the 5th. one Order of the Phoenix and about 200 pages into it I still couldn't get into the book. I'm told by several people I need to read it and just stick it out no matter how boring it gets or bored I get any suggestions or reasons I should do this and read it?

Go back and read the first one to remind yourself why you fell in love w/Potter Universe.  The books do get rather convoluted and - dare I say it - draggy in parts, but you have to read every blessed word otherwise something that happens two books down the road makes no sense at all.

Give yourself a little break from them and come back in a couple of weeks or a month.  If you still can't get into it, well, there's always the released movies in which to immerse yourself and new ones to look forward to.

Evidently, he's looking at 5 years (max) for possession, and 14 years (also max) for the growing of it.  You'd think he'd make enough off the movies, but with as many plants as he had (I know it was several), he nearly had to have been selling it as well.  It's sad to see young talent involved in this sort of thing.  I just hope it doesn't end up casting the movie in a bad light.

I'm already gearing up for the release, just gotta figure out where I'll be living!  XD

Austin would be a bit far for me to move right now, though not a bad idea.  I'm told I loved Texas when I was two.  ...Of course, the sun and I don't get along so well, and I have a feeling there's a lot of people I love that I'd miss quite a lot!  xD  (I am, however, invading TRF in 2010!)

My best friend and I have been working on a Renaissance-era Hogwarts idea, though.  ^.^  Uniforms and all.  Always fun to combine your two favourite things, isn't it?

I really hope they focus more on the Voldemort back-story than the other stuff in the HBP movie.  ^.^  Those were my favourite bits in the book!  Can't wait to see Slughorn, either.  =D

7th book release:

Those were our initial "Renaissance Ravenclaw" "uniforms."  I like her bodice a lot better for the idea, but it's now being converted into upper-class garb.  I'm still in the sketching phase of -actual- uniforms for the time period.  ^.^  The bodice I was wearing is actually quite a bit too big for me now, so I'll definitely be working on something new. :D

A BIG Huzzah for 2010!  I have a very dear friend that lives in Texas, and she'll be celebrating her 21st birthday at TRF, and it'd be -awesome- if I could get some RFers to help her celebrate!

HBP opening moved up two days!:

'Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince' Release Pushed Up Two DaysSixth installment of J.K. Rowling's series will now open July 15.
By Eric Ditzian

Did you think you couldn't possibly wait another three months for the newest "Harry Potter" film to hit theaters? Well, you're in luck! Kinda. Warner Bros. has announced that the sixth movie in the J.K. Rowling series will be released a whole two days earlier than planned.

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is now set to open on Wednesday, July 15, giving moviegoers a jump on the weekend and virtually assuring the film a staggering five-day box-office gross.

"Every day the kids are out of school in summer is just like an extra Saturday," Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman told The Associated Press.

The previous film in the franchise, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," opened on a Wednesday in July 2007 and garnered $62.5 million over its first two days. The five-day box-office tally stood at $139.5 million.

This is the second change on the calendar for "Half-Blood Prince," which was originally slated for a fall release until the studio shifted the film to a summer opening.

The dates for the final two films — the two-part "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" — are firmly in place. At least for now. Part one is set to come out on Friday, November 19, 2010, with the conclusion opening Friday, July 15, 2011, exactly two years after "Half-Blood Prince." That is, if Warner Bros. doesn't start shifting things around again. As we've seen, big-screen plans for the boy wizard could change at any moment.

Check out everything we've got on "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

Thanks to everyone for compliments on the garb.  ^.^  I can't wait to work on something more "uniform" for it, though.  And something that will more easily transcend House colours.  I actually have an existing bodice that, once I get it cut down to fit me again, might work well for my 2nd House of choice...Slytherin.  And she has one that would work for Gryffindor.  xD  I suppose all we're really missing thus far is Hufflepuff, but I've skirts for that!  And here I am babbling about Renaissance Hogwarts again!  LOL

I'll certainly post when I plan on making my trek to TRF!  ^.^  I can't wait, actually, as I've heard so many wonderful things about that particular faire!

Well, it's nice to expect the movie a -little- earlier, but smack in the middle of the work-week?!  I suppose I'll have to resign myself to yet another evening showing, rather than getting to a midnight release!

New Details from Harry Potter, the Exhibit
Movies
Posted by: Sue
April 27, 2009, 10:52 AM
Previews are now underway for Harry Potter, the Exhibit at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Following on our reports from over the weekend, TLC reader Michael was able to get an early tour yesterday, and sent in some new delightful details of the props and set pieces used in the Harry Potter films fans attending the exhibit can expect to see.

A video montage of the first five Harry Potter films starts things off, with the images "concluding with it looking like the Hogwarts Express entering the station into Hogsmeade. A side wall then opened up "to reveal the scarlet stream engine." You entered into Gryffindor Tower with an animated paintings of The Fat Lady "attempting to break the glass with her voice (very cool!)." Fans will be able to see things such as the Marauders Map "Hermione's wand, time-turner and planner and the members list of Dumbledore's Army," as well as Neville's Mimbulus Mimbletonia.

Michael continues: "There was a section devoted to Defense Against the Dark Arts where we see Gilderoy Lockhart's complete published works and the portrait of him painting himself. The is also a life-sized "freshly caught" Cornish Pixie. For Professor Lupin we see the Boggart Wardrobe and a full-sized Jack in the Box. There is also the records of the PotterCast drums on display. Professor Umbridge is represented by a wholly pink display, complete with kitten plates, pink kitten stationary, and dangerous detention quill. Harry's parchment with "I will not tell lies" is sitting right on the table."

"Later, we enter the area devoted to dark magic. We see Voldemort's robes from GoF. They are actually green! We see Draco and Lucius Malfoy's attire from GoF. That includes Lucius's snake-headed staff with
emerald eyes. Other metallic snakes adorn his robes and shirt.  There is a full-scale dementor and I found it interesting that the "tail" of the dementor is visible beneath the cloak and it looks like an exposed spine trailing into the tail. Further down is the Prisoner of Azkaban outfit worn by Belletrix Lestrange and right nex to them is Kreacher looking as grumpy as ever. The Angel of Death statue from the graveyard scene is included in the exhibit."

"There are also Ministry missives including the paper airplanes and the Wizard version of Cliff's Notes. It is a study aid for the O.W.L.s.: How to Soar on Your OWLs! The Interdepartmental memos include an 'M' across the fold along the top and is sealed with a Ministry of Magic emblem (sticker.) They are printed on purple paper.  There is also candy from from Honeyduke's and also the Weasley Twin's Skiving Snackboxes."

"We move from there (Greenhouse) into the Quidditch area and the first thing we see is the crate from The Sorcerer's Stone containing the four balls. There is also the Nimbus 2000 and 2001 (Sorry, no Firebolt!) There are many sets of Quidditch including Victor Krum's from the World Cup. We see Ron' robes from the upcoming Half-blood Prince film. You also get to test your skills with a Quaffle (I only missed one!) We also see robes for Draco Malfoy, Oliver Wood, and Cedric Diggory."

Finally, PotterCast listeners may also recognize Michael as not only one of the editors on the show, but also as the voice of Hagrid for our Acting Troupe and Co-host of the Harry Potter filk podcast Filkcast:Potter Style. It is with delight he writes the following: "...we see Buckbeak the Hippogriff next to Hagrid's pumpkin patch. And this brings us to Hagrid's Hut. Inside is the actual table and chair seen in the Sorcerer's Stone and on top is a shaking, rattling dragon egg (which presumably contains Norbert.) There is a large Hagrid-sized armchair for you to try out and we see Hagrid's full attire. I am 6 foot 3 and the shoulders are a foot above my head. Too cool! We also see a few copies of The Monster Book of Monsters (there actually octopus suckers on the little tendrils), the lantern used to enter the dark forest and his pink umbrella wand! All in all, "it was amazing to see Harry's clothes from SS (He was so small, then) and all the various wands. My favorite items included seeing the Grim teacup and the Marauder's map, oh, and Rita Skeeter's acid green quill."

A press preview is also being held this week for all the fansites including TLC, and we will have much more then, stay tuned! Thanks so much Michael!

Harry Potter, the Exhibit opens April 30 and runs until September 27, 2009. For more ticket info, hours and more, please click here.

Just to let everyone know, I have successfully finish Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix. It turned out to be OK and didn't suck as but this time I tired reading it once before and after 200 pages had to stop reading it just couldn't get into it. I'm currently just over 200 pages into Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and I'm finding this one to be one of the better books and I've learned a few things I didn't know.

I must say that I do like the purple highlights and the green hair.  It was bound to catch on there.

That is good news Brother Gregory.  I hope you enjoy the rest of the series.

Michael of Galway - I'm digging the green hair & pierced noses.  Somehow I think Molly would come unglued.

Brother Gregory, glad you waded through Phoenix.  Some of the books catch our interest than others.  Half Blood Prince is on the top of my LUUUUURVE list.

I think it's interesting to see how the books appeal to people differently. HBP is actually my 2nd least favorite (after SS). The trailers for the movie look almost completely good, which really worries me. I don't want my hopes up for this one, since the rest of the movies since CoS have totally let me down.

And why the heck is Bellatrix fighting in these previews?!? I hate HBC as Bellatrix, and I hate that they're trying to add the character in where she does not belong. She appears for one chapter in HBP - the unbreakable vow. That's it. There are no other appearances by her. So why did they put her in the movie?! And no one attacks the burrow in this book either - that would be DH. So I don't understand why the burrow is getting attacked.

Nevertheless, I know I will have to see it at midnight, anyway. HP is my #2 obsession - nearly tied with #1 (musical theatre). I'm new to Ren Faires, but HP and I have had a very long relationship. I've read all the books more times than I can count. I would estimate at least 20 times on average for each book. Less for DH and more for SS, which I have also read in Spanish, and the British version. I have the British version of DH, too - it came out in paperback while I was over there this summer. I couldn't resist.

My favorite part of Beedle the Bard was the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts! If I can find enough people to order them, I'm trying to have jackets made - I've already designed them and everything, but they're too expensive unless around 15 people get them.

Just to let everyone know I finished Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince on Sunday. I like it more then five andto this point it's the best of them. I've started the last book Deadly Hallows and have read the first 146 pages.

HBP is one of the crown jewels.  I think you'll really enjoy DH, too - the only downside is that once you're done, that's all, folks.

Just checked w/Fandango for the IMAX 3D experience - it doesn't open at the Edwards Cinema on I-10 in Houston until 7/29, so I went ahead & bought my tickets for the midnight 6-14 opening.  I feel a little swoon comin' on.  I'll get the IMAX 3D tickets a week or 2 after it comes out on IMAX.

If they had waited for another two years to start filming, it would be about 4 years until it came out at theaters.  It's a shock to see the ickle first years in Sorcerer's Stone transform into young adults.

Why isn't it midnight already?

A little after 4 a.m. & just got home and all I can say is: WOOHOO!  The boys were charming with their obsessions about the girls' "nice skin".  Were there ever more virginy virgins than this lot?

Snape's robes are much reduced and don't billow but follow him around like a dreadful shadow.  The kid who played Tom Riddle was a real scene stealer.  The special effects are just that.  It starts out light and breezy and mainly concerned w/teenage hormones and then falls into a deep cesspool of dread.

There were lots of people in HP t's, some kids in robes, a very nice Hagrid and Dolores (including the quill of doom and cup & saucer).  My Snape garb made its debut tonight & lots of fangirls had their picture taken w/me.  The Aquarium restaurant had an owl there and answered questions.  I won a BIG two sided poster re why was the guest Mad Eye so thin?  My answer:  he was locked up in a trunk the entire school year.  On the way out I bought a ticket for the IMAX matinee on the 29th.

Finally, I met fellow RF'er Blue there after the movie.  All in all, it was a GREAT evening & an even BETTER movie!

NEED.MORE.COFFEE.  :o

Taffy, they were adorable talking about who has 'nice skin', and the young Tom Riddle was quite striking...and, as always, the Quiddich scenes were thrilling.

I didn't go in costume, and I saw more girls in 'schoolgirl' outfits, some accented in house colors, most not. There were also a couple of recent graduates in their robes who brought wands with them, and they chased a 'dementor' (read - another kid with a garbage bag ofer his head/torso) through the theater as the previews started ~ they were cute.

I loved the movie, it was well worth it but I'm exhausted, and now I have to get ready for work...keep the coffee coming!  ;D

I got there with plenty of time. We were able to finish up the show 20 mins earlier than usual, so I got to the theatre at about 11:30. And then I met with the biggest line I've ever seen outside of Disneyland. This theatre has 18 stadium screens, and I'm pretty sure every single one was having Harry Potter at midnight. It was crazy!

And now for my opinions:

Spoiler warning!

I actually thought the movie was probably the best yet. Until they got back to the castle after the cave. Then seriously, what the hell happened? It was like they all of a sudden ran out of money. No battle? Oh, yeah, instead, lets have stupid HBC running around like a monkey, wreaking havoc in various rooms. It was such a let down, I don't even know how to rank the movie! And then no funeral for Dumbledore? It just doesn't make sense. And of course, since it's the last thing you see, it left me with a terrible taste in my mouth about the movie as I left the theatre. Altogether unacceptable.

My other qualms were the burning of the Burrow, Ginny and Harry in the Room of Requirement (hello, um, you kind of forgot to show Harry seeing a rusty old tiara!), the lack of Hufflepuff's cup being shown, and them never having done something about the last movie showing the real locket in the cabinet in Grimmauld Place (and thus, not showing Mundungus selling everything he stole from there). So basically, there are 3 of 7 Horcruxes that the movies have not attempted to explain.

I'm also not sure how I feel about Luna being a plot-revealing device. Evanna Lynch does a wonderful job, but a lot of it seems out of character.

Altogether, I really wish I could go back and see it again, and have the ending be miraculously changed.

End Spoiler!

Lady, don't worry about being the person who tells 'the very important end of the movie' spoiler.  Apparently the biggest complaint heard about the movie was not including what was probably one of the biggest and most emotional scenes from the book.
The entertainment press included the ending in nearly every article.  I just can't imagine the movie without that funeral.

I loved getting to actually see the Burrow - a crazy quilt of a house.  Rupert was marvelous in the quidditch scene.  As far as added and deleted scenes, I just have to tell myself they're movies, made for a broader base of entertainment.  I'm just glad they were made, even if they weren't 100% canon & even if there were changed, added, shortened, or deleted scenes.  So I'm thinking the bridge scene will be in 3D?

Ok...
I just saw the new movie and, having never read the books, I have 2questions:
1. What's the significance of the text book?
2. What's the significance of Snape being the Half Blood Prince?

Thought the movie was ok, but aside from Dumbledore dying, it didn't seem to further the over-all story

Spoiler alert!
If you haven't seen the movie or read the book yet stop now. I'm not going to say anything that really helps in enjoying the movie, just answering the questions asked. Go watch the movie and then ask your questions.
Move along! There's nothing to see here.  ;D

The text book has long been held by a truly brilliant potions expert. He started modifying the recipes when he was a student, and because of his love of potions, he used the book as his notebook for other spells and incantations he found or developed on his own.
Death Eaters hate half-bloods. Many old wizarding families hold half bloods and the muggle born in general in complete contempt regardless of their demonstrated talent and abilities. Snape's mother was a muggle named Prince. Thus he turned the ridicule he received as a student into a title of honor.
There were subtleties that were shown that are necessary for the continuation of the story in the next two films. Some of the details that were left out of this one costing them real money on the next two. Two things to think about are the fact that three Horcruxes have been destroyed, that still leaves four to be found before Voldermort can die.  Also think about the fact that Harry has decided and announced that he won't be returning to Hogwarts.

Thanks, Z! You kinda rock a little!! And don't get me wrong, I like the movies, but every series suffers from at least one that's not as exciting as the rest. The one that really only serves to set up the next step. I think I may hafta break down and give the books a shot! :)

Double perspective in our house.
I have not read the books and wont until the last movie is out. To me that makes the movie more enjoyable because I don't worry about things added or left out. (Never fear, I fully intend to read them all as soon as the movies are finished)
The Lovely Lady Trinn on the other hand is a devotee. Not only had she read the books countless times, but she reads tons of other things from JKR. Every interview, short story.... everything Potter she can get her hands on is consumed voraciously. Also listens to Harry Potter podcasts and has read several HP philosophy books. We also have plans to attend the 2011(?) LeakeyCon.

My perspective- Really enjoyable movie. The funniest one of the bunch so far i thought. I knew some things that would be happening going in, but not enough that I was missing anything or hoping to see any one thing. I liked it as well as the rest (I and really really like these movies)

Her perspective- The movie was good but... Disappointed in some changes made because they didn't make sense to her. She believed the book this time was to large a scope to be contained in a single movie and that it missed out because of that. Overall, still a worthy addition to the movie series.

(sigh)  I have yet to see it, and the way things are going, it may just be a while... but I've read all the books, so I'm not worried about spoilers.  Sounds like there are pretty mixed opinions on this one, though I've noticed a really darkening trend in the books as they near the end of the story.  Not anywhere nearly the amount of lighthearted fun that there was in the early books, but maybe that signifies the whole growing-up process... matters become more weighty the older you get, I suppose.  Still, I miss the sheer exuberance of the early movies...

Oh!  Which in no way detracts from my desire to see, or my enjoyment of, said movies!!!  LOL

I haven't read the 6th book since the week it came out which was years ago now.  So honestly I don't remember the exact differences.   That's the way I do my book/movies, read the book first, but make sure to read it well in advance of when the movie comes out so I can forget the small detail differences...  Anyhow, I loved the movie, thought it was missing some, but ALL of the books are missing some.  They did not sheer off from the main plot or anything like that, just left some out.  I agree with Rani on the fact that the movies/books get darker the later it goes.  I think it's just to build to the final climax of the whole series, but definitely part of the growing up process too!

Another thing I noticed is, if I didn't already know about Ron and Hermoine, I never woulda guessed it! I assume this is more of a "saw it coming" thing in the books, but I never really saw a hint of it till HBP, so it was kind of a shock to see her get all "crushy" on him all of a sudden.
Title: Re: Wild about Harry- Potter that is!
Post by: Rani Zemirah on July 20, 2009, 03:41:00 PM
Yeah... it was a bit of a surprise, except for the whole thing about them at the Ball in "Goblet of Fire". Of course, there have been the little looks between them, all the times they've fallen on top of each other then scrambled apart once they realized where they were, hands touching accidentally... all those little things can add up to romance, I guess, especially if you throw in the whole "come closer - no, go away - no, really, come closer" vibe they've been putting off since the first book/movie.  ::) :D

At first I thought Hermione was going to fall for Harry, but then I realized that that would leave Ron out of the mix altogether, except as a third wheel, and that would never do for a major character, so what better way to both keep them on the same footing and still keep Harry on a bit higher pedestal than to have the two best friends fall in love?  Plot problem solved!  LOL
Title: Re: Wild about Harry- Potter that is!
Post by: LadyElizabeth on July 20, 2009, 04:17:12 PM
I agree with Rani, there have definitely been signs ALL throughout, you just have to look for them.  Like when Hermoine comes back from being frozen in book 2 and she runs in and hugs Harry, but then she and Ron just stand there akwardly not knowing what to do...  And the whole Goblet of Fire thing was a dead give away to their feelings, Hermoine flat out said "well you should ask me to the dance next time first instead of as an after thought."  Just look at the difference between the affection btwn Harry and Hermoine and btwn Ron and Hermoine, then it's easy to see.

I'm with LadyElizabeth.  I read the books when they came out and didn't reread them before going to the moive, so I've forgotten most of the details.  In that context, I really enjoyed this one.

In the first ones, I kept feeling like you HAD to have read the books to even follow what was going on.  The last one and this one didn't seem to have that problem.  Beautifully done, good characters, a bit of humor to lighten the darkness - I WILL be seeing it again in IMAX 3D when that comes out.  Probably not in garb this time though.

Biggest indication that it was good - I wondered why that huge soda I bought was gone long before it was over, and I was shocked at what time it was when we got in the car afterwards.  It's long, but it never felt that way.  Nothing dragged.

Pictures from my outing with Queen Bonnie to come soon!

NOTE:  Bags are randomly assorted and may not contain every flavor
."

They come in a very nicely made little blue nylon fabric bag w/the product name in golden colored, lightning shaped letters and yellow pull cords.  I also received a package of Blood Pops.  I have a very nice sister.

I haven't opened the bag yet - kind of scared to, to tell the truth.  I don't have the package with me, but I think they are strawberry flavored lollis.  But yes, the package says "Blood Pops" in great big letters.  A little article about them:  http://candyaddict.com/blog/2006/08/30/exclusive-preview-harry-potter-blood-pops/

I've seen the flavored beans before, but never tried them.  How horrid are they?  I mean, that stuff can't taste good...  The blood pops sound like fun, a bloody red mouth sounds like fun too...  I like strawberry flavor, but the review said it wasn't exactly strawberry, but it was odd...

Truthfully - the package of beans will likely stay sealed.  The whole idea of a booger, sardine, sausage, or vomit flavored bean makes me more than a bit oogie.

I've tried the Every Flavor Beans.  I learned very quickly to read and study colors on which flavors were which and only eat the good ones.  They are almost 100% spot on to the flavor they say they are.  Which some flavors did leave me feeling a bit sick.

While not paying attention and just popping htem into my mouth, not really wanting to believe that they would make candy taste horrible, I have tried grass, ear wax, vomit and dirt.  That was when I started paying attention.  Although I must say it wasnt soon enough.

Oh yeah, and black pepper.  They werent kidding when they say they taste like what they are supposed to.

You know, these beans would rock for a truth or dare type party!!  Otherwise, I seriously would not be just randomly eating them!!  Vomit, earwax, gross!!

They would make for a really good truth or dare party.  But if you do eat them, make sure your looking at the cue card that says which each one is and only eat the safe ones.

I kept thinking: oh, vomit ones can't REALLY taste like vomit....right?

Then I accidentally popped one in my mouth, thinking it was a different flavor, and took a bite.   :P

I don't remember my friend ever laughing that hard before or since. Between the look on my face, and my sudden scurry to the bathroom to spit it out and and wash out my mouth, she had tears coming from her eyes!

I pity the poor fool taste testers who had to work to get those right!!

I love the Bertie Bott's Beans!  I was, however, disappointed that they didn't come in a box like the movies have.  We gave some to my sister and her husband when they first came out.  We tried a few of the tamer flavors already knowing that Jelly Belly has always been pretty true to actual tastes.  She left the rest of the yucky flavors out for her brother-in-law because he always comes over to raid the candy stash.  He grabbed a couple handfuls of "dirt", "vomit", "earthworm", etc...and proceeded to pop them in his mouth one after another with no real response.  Then, when he was finished with them, he informed her that he thought she ought to check the date on her jelly beans because they MIGHT have gone bad or something.  Hahaha!  LOL!!  Are his taste buds functioning?!  Yuck  :P

I liked the new movie, but there were a lot of times I wondered how it got so far off from the books.  It was also a bit choppy, I thought.  Not a lot of time spent on some of the more important scenes, but other scenes, especially toward the end, I felt were too drawn out.

SPOILER BELOW:

I wasn't feeling it between Harry and Ginny.  Made her seem odd.  And, can anyone explain why they burnt down the Burrow?  I mean, where will the wedding be?  :)  And, when back at school, not one of the Weasley's seemed to be at all concerned that they had no home to return to.

I really likes Ron's scenes in this one.  Very funny stuff.  Harry with the Luck potion made me chuckle a few times, too.

Call me cynical but I question that they actually put the disgusting flavors n the box.  I have had several boxes (my cousing brings them from Britain) and I have never gotten 'eathworm, booger or vomit'.  I suspect they just list those flavors for the shock value.  Of course, possibly I just have been VERY lucky.  Unlike Prof. Dumbledore.

On the bottom of the list it says that it's an assortment and not all flavors may be in the bag.  My mom & I had a good hard look at the guide and found several of the nasty ones.  May be just a matter of the draw.

I like jelly bellys enought that a past expiration date wouldn't do much more than slow me down.  BIL's taste buds may be on strike.

The thing is, there is alot more in depth detail about the Harry and Ginny romance in the books.  Harry was really hurting at different time and Ginny was just always there to comfort him and be by his side.  She fought for him when needed and gave him a shoulder when otherwise needed.

As for the burrows, I could swear that they just rebuilt it or something with the twins tons of $...  I think that's why no one was too worried.

I totally agree with the Harry luck potion scenes, it totally cracked me up!!!

The burning of the burrow never happened in the book.  I'm confused as to why they decided to add it?!?!

After I saw that in the previews I went back and read the book.  I don't have the greatest memory but I was positive the burrow wasn't attacked until the last book!
Title: Re: Wild about Harry- Potter that is!

Well, it threw me for a loop, even after seeing it in the previews.  I've read, or listened to the stories (way too many times to be normal) and still miss/forget a lot of major things!  :)  Having the movies be so different really confuses me.

I feel sorry for those who have not read the books before watching the movies.  So many details missing.  Seems like it would be hard to follow.  The pace is so quick and missing the tiniest details could confuse you.

BTW, I guess the burning burrow is also in the video game.  I'm not liking the thought.  Just seems as wrong as burning a church or something!

So I saw it again yesterday. I think, despite some of it's major problems, that's it's definitely one of the better movies. I don't know if it quite makes it up to the level of CoS (my favorite), but of movies 3-6, it's definitely my favorite. I realized that I can forgive some parts of the lowsy ending. And I understand them putting the Burrow in it, when given the explanation that they did it in order to show the scare impact that the death eaters have. There are still a lot of problems (I think one of the worst, really, is that Harry wasn't petrified on the top of the tower), but overall, it's not so horrible.

Oh, and while the flavors have changed over time, when they first came out with Bertie Botts (I think around movie 2?), some of them were really disgusting. I remember having a horseradish one that I thought was coconut, and I wanted to vomit. I haven't had one since, even though it seems they cut that flavor. You have to be really careful, though, when you get the Belly Flops from the Jelly Belly factory - the ones we got last year, we're pretty sure had some Bertie Botts Belly Flops. Noticing the odd colors, though, we managed to avoid all but one, which I believe was either a sardine or pepper that my mom tasted and promptly spit out.

I finally saw the latest Harry Potter movie this weekend.  I enjoyed it very much but I do not understand why they did some ot the changes from the book.  Some, like the Burrow, I can remotely understand, but others, like the tube station, seems pointless.  I guess I'll wait for the DVD so I can watch it 10 or 12 times and figure it all out.

So, I'm on the Religious Services Committee at my church, the Unitarian Church of Davenport, Iowa. We perform the services once a month, and for the entire month of July. We pick a theme for the summer stretch, and this year's theme is "Worlds We Imagine". Guess the subject of the August 1 service! The Harry Potter Universe! I'm using one of the Sorting Hat's songs as a reading, using a quote from Prisoner of Azkaban the movie for the lighting of the chalice, and using the "Prologue" from Sorcerer's Stone Soundtrack for the offertory music.

Great pics!  Thanks for posting them.

We'll be attempting to visit there in October.  Do you think one day would suffice to see everything?  We're wondering if there is enough entertainment to spread over two days (for a seven year old) while we ogle and awe over all the scenery.

Did you hear about the lawsuits that were filed last week against the park already?
They are saying that the park is discrimnating against larger fans because the seats of the rides do not take into account larger guests.

I would love to go, but i just hate reading downers.  Keep up the fun reports of the place!  ;D

I saw that- about the ride
what the crazy part is that those restraints aren't new, they were there before.
So what do they prefer that they allow people to ride and then fall to their death because the restraints didn't hold them in??

I mean come on now this sense of entitlement people have about these things is absolutely ridiculous

I didnt hear they were lawsuits yet.  I had only heard that many were walking away disappointed because they couldnt ride.  That is truly sad.

I am very envious! I want to go very badly- but don't see it happening. Sigh. we want all the details! Pictures! I want to be there too!
Sad not everyone can ride all rides- but it must be difficult to please everyone or accommodate all sizes.

Oh, I completely believe a lawsuit has been filed. Forbidden Journey is a brand new ride, and so many of Universal's rides already don't fit larger guests, so I don't know why they didn't fit ahead. One of my friends that I went with wasn't able to ride it because she's too big on top, and when I told my parents they might not fit when they come out here to visit, my mom said she planned to write a disgruntled letter.

But anyway, I rode it today! I only waited through the single rider line, so I haven't had the full cue line experience yet, but I think next time I go, I will wait in it (it was actually more crowded today than it was last week!). But the ride was really cool! If you get at all motion sick, take a dramamine first. I took one, and it was still a little crazy. But it's also really awesome and totally worth it!

I also watched the frog choir perform (I want to be part of them!) and saw the Bauxbatons/Durmstrang performance (pretty good, though I have seen better).

As far as how much time you should allow, it really depends on when you are coming. I can't imagine it will be too crowded in October, but I still haven't done Ollivanders because it's been a 2hr wait. If you put that 2 hrs together with a 75 to 90 min wait for Forbidden Journey, you're looking at 3.5 hrs there. Plus it's been an hour wait for the restaurant, 15 minutes or so to ride Dragon Challenge (in the morning), 10 for Hippogriff, and about 20 mins to get inside Dervish and Banges. Plus shopping time. So if you want to do absolutely everything, it's probably a good 6 hours. But not more than a whole day. Do remember, though, there is also the whole rest of Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure. Think of Harry Potter as Universal's Fantasyland (size-wise).

I just use a butterscotch flavoring and cream soda. The cream soda is already the right color, and butterscotch gives it the right flavor. Plus, it's easy to make for crowds - one bottle of flavoring mixes with a 2-liter of cream soda, both can be chilled before mixing. A little bit of amaretto can make it the adult version.

For Cockroach Clusters: melt chocolate almond bark in a double boiler, mix in chow mein noodles (slightly broken) and raisins. Drop spoonfuls of the mixture onto wax paper, let set, then serve.

For Ice Mice: melt white almond bark in a double boiler, add peppermint candy flavoring to taste, then pipe onto wax paper in teardrop shapes. Let set, then serve.

The problem with making the rides larger is then the younger set who are smaller can't ride. It is kind of a catch 22 damned if ya do, damned if ya don't!  I know it is hard on all! Maybe they need to make a whole other set of rides for the BIG adults ...a different set of cars or something. This way the bigger people can ride safely and so can the smallest kids!  I wish I could go... don't think that will happen!Too many critters!

The thing is, due to the height restrictions, small children can't ride. You have to be at least 4ft tall to ride.

Still a 4' kid who is like mine always were would need three of them per seat that would fit a large sized adult... Even I would have to ride buddy! They simply need to make seats for the BIG KIDS and leave the normal seats alone... this way all could be safe! I just hate to see the rides made to fit only big people so that the smaller folk could not be allowed on too! After all the rides were first and foremost designed to be for kids.
Title: Re: Wild about Harry- Potter that is!

An article I read mentioned that some other rides did have seats for normal sizes and then some for larger people.  But they said this ride failed to follow as others at the park.  I think they should just redo the seating to be like the other rides that seem to be fine at the park.

Try it again, this time, use just last names. It fills in every person with that last name. For instance, typing "Potter" gets you Harry, James, Lily, Albus Severus and James Sirius.

I have a question for the folks who have been to Universal Studios Orlando-How is the line control there?
When I can get away for the odd mini-vacation I have only a day or two to see a lot of stuff, so I really don't want to spend an entire day on just one part of the Park.   I have had bad experiences with some of the larger theme parks here in the Midwest.  You get in a long line,  then realize 30 minutes later that you have moved all of 5 feet, thanks to rampant line jumpers (some of which just got off the same ride, and cut in with friends who are still waiting.)
I love the Harry Potter movies and  books, but I hate huge crowds and waiting more than 30 minutes for a 2 minute ride even more.  My husband has arthritis, so he really can't stand on line for that long anyway, so I'll probably wait until the attraction has been open for a year or so before I visit, then go during the off season.

I've never experienced line jumping at an amusement park. It seems like the lines keep moving pretty quickly, except for when things break down.

Ok! So, I really need to share this and what better place than here!

My boyfriend is turning 21 this year in October. I love halloween and I've always wanted to have a big halloween party. I finally have my own apartment and I am starting to plan his birthday for the middle of october. We both love Harry Potter and I'm really excited to do this ;D I made the invitations the other night

I made small changes to the 9 because it's a bit hard to tell what it is and I changed the O's in 'Costumed' and 'Brandon' to be the same height as the other letters in the word. Also, the facebook page isn't real, but I will make a group thing for friends with additional info closer to the date.

I'm getting him this magic wand TV remote (http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/home-entertainment/cf9b/) from Thinkgeek.com. It's kind of like a wii remote, it's motion controlled and you can flick it to change channels, or spin it to turn up the volume, there are 13 functions, he's really excited for it.

Like any typical college party there shall be jello shots, but they'll have potions written on them. I'm going to make butter beer, hang those LED tea light candles from the ceiling somehow (like in the great hall!) and I've got this metal tree jewelry hanger I shall put a little car in for the Whomping Willow.

So...I'm excited. I havn't told any of my friends yet because I'm just getting it off the ground and if I didn't tell someone who liked HP (because while my mom humors me, she doesn't really care) I thought I might explode!

That's a really cool idea, Delireus. I'm excited for this weekend. I'm leading a church service on Harry Potter Sunday. My wife and I are making Butterbeer, Cockroach Clusters, Ice Mice, Chocolate Wands, and Cauldron Cupcakes for the coffee hour after church. Here's the blurb from our church's website:

"Worlds We Imagine: Harry Potter and the Power of Working Together
J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series is one of the most well-read series in the history of the printed word. It has inspired a line of successful movies, hundreds of fan web pages, licensed merchandise, candy, video games, even an amusement park. But what can it tell us about our lives and spiritual journeys? Join RSC member Dustin Oliver and explore Harry's world and what it has to say about the power of working together. After the service, in addition to coffee, enjoy Butterbeer, Cockroach Clusters, Chocolate Wands and Ice Mice."

Agreed. Nicely planned parties guys. :) Your invites are awsome Deleious, and Dustin it's good to see church embracing the magic behind Potter. :)

Rowen, I'd wait for off season if I were you. There's going to be lines at anytime for Harry Potter for a while, but the fall months up to mid November, directly after Thankgsgiving  and then again after the New Year, Janurary and February are great times to visit. Nicer weather and shorter lines. Get a fastpass for the more popular rides or if you can afford it , stay on property and they will give you a priority pass for all the lines.

I've seen line jumpers, but they are pretty easily dealt with.

Universal doesn't do fastpasses. There is, however, a pass that you can buy for $20 for the day, where you can go in a special line in many of the rides. However, this pass does not work on anything but Dragon Challenge (which doesn't have a bad wait time anyway) in the Harry Potter section. You also get this pass for anything you ride after 4pm if you buy the premium annual pass. I'm not sure whether or not the resort gives you that sort of pass, but if you stay in a Universal resort, you get in an hour early to the park.
Title: Re: Wild about Harry- Potter that is!
Post by: Anna Iram on August 04, 2010, 11:11:19 AM
My experience with the Universal resort pass is the room key acts as a front of the line pass for all the rides.

Hmmm..guess maybe they don't do "fastpass" ...must be the Disney parks I'm thinking of...

Rowen, I'd make a call or check into their current "Express Pass"  rules online before counting on anything in that area. but here's a link:

Yup, the individual ride tickets that you can get every two hours using your park tickets are the Disney Fastpasses. Not available on all rides, but it is on most of the popular ones.

Another option you might consider (which exists at some rides both at Disney and Universal) are single-rider lines. They have this option on Forbidden Journey. The only problem is that you bypass most of the cool rooms on the cue.

But I repeat OMG I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!!

Please discuss.  ???

We got in to a sneak preview before midnight.  I have NEVER heard an audience that quiet.   I have to say they did the book justice.  Typically they have to cut chapters to make it work for the screen.  This time they only had to cut a paragraph or page here and there.  Very nice, and very well done.

It is certainly worth going back and seeing again.

Now when does part 2 come out? ? ;D ;D

Spoiler alert!!!

Just saw it last night! They did do it justice!  Yes, there were some small details changed and omitted, but my god, that was INTENSE!!!!!!
During most of the movie, except for the funny scenes,  you could hear a pin drop.  The final Dobby scene was nicely done, oh how I cried!  The cliffhanger was a good spot to cut off.  I can't imagine how emotionally draining part 2 is going to be. I want to see it again!

Oh and I know true Potter fans already know how "dark" this movie is, but just a friendly warning:  The movie is pg 13.  May not be suitable for very young potter fans if they are sensitive to violence and frightening images. As I said before it is intense but fantastic!

So yesterday, to further prolong our Harry Potter celebration, one of my friends and I had a Potter Party! We made Troll Toenails, Snape's Stuffed Toadstools, Butterbeer (frozen and regular), Butterbeer cupcakes, Pumpkin Pasties, and Pumpkin shakes, and watched A Very Potter Musical. Fun times!

This new one was definitely my favorite one yet! Only thing i can think of is i wish they had dressed Ginny up (age wise) it just kind of made Harry look like a creeper.
I've gotten Harry Potter fever since I've seen it and now i am hooked!

The Harry Potter feast was a grand success from Fang's marrow bones for the appetizer to shrunken pumpkin cakes for dessert.  There were candles and wands and jelly beans at each place setting.  And I discovered I *like* roasted marrow bones - talk about magical!

The movie was absolutely wonderful and I give it two wands up!

All I know is that I got my name in to be part of a group that is going to a private 7 PM showing of part 2 on THURSDAY before it opens.  It's hosted by a local comic book store.  Nothing like being in a whole movie theater that is full to the brim with your fellow Harry Potter fanatics.  And one of the few places you can go in costume and they won't bat an eye. :)

I am exceedingly jealous of you right now. I'm still trying to decide where to see it, since all my Harry Potter friends from the last movie will be 3000 miles away from me.

But really, if you're going to the midnight showing, no one bats an eye at you for dressing up anyway. Or at least, they didn't for the last movie, when we (and the rest of the people around us) went fully dressed up to Harry Potter World at Universal Studios, and then waited around City Walk until we could go line up in the theatre. I wish I was there for this one!

Looking forward to D.H. part 2!

I do think that JK Rowling is making the right decision to retire Harry and Friends; that story arc has been told in all but the fanfic.  They fought, they won and they grew up.
It's a kids series and it would seem a bit selfish to try to high jack it just because the adult fans want to see more of Harry, Hermione, et al.

I can see JKR starting a new series in the future with (possible) multiple heros.  The original crew had plenty of kids, all, if not most of them gifted witches and wizards.
A new series would still have lots of opportunities for cameo appearances by the 'old folks', and it's also a perfect way to keep the series young for the next generation in a natural way, and an excellent 'money-spinner' for her should she need to write for a living in the future.

Yes he did, but then they all did, didn't they?  Can you imagine being a young kid growing up making these movies and how it feels for them now that it's over?  It makes you wonder what roles they will get in the future that can possibly top Harry Potter!

I am sooo freaking excited! I will definitely be dressing up for the midnight showing - right now I'm wavering between the double feature and seeing it at 12:30 (all the good theatres with normal midnight showings are sold out). My mom has decided to brave the late hours and join me. My dad, on the other hand, is waiting for Friday evening, when we will go see it in IMAX. I'm not sure if I'll dress up the 2nd time as well, or just wear my Remus Lupins t-shirt (It says "Make love, not horcruxes").

The local history & science museum has an Imax theater. They ran a contest in the newspaper Saturday morning for free tickets, but failed to mention in any of their lead-up announcements that the contest would be for people with smartphones or other QR-reader enabled devices. I made a special side trip on the way to work to get a paper for nothing (I don't have a smartphone), and was a little ticked. I posted my displeasure on the museum's Facebook page, they deleted my post without comment. My wife posted her displeasure, they deleted her comment and kicked her off the list of "fans". Steam rolling out of my ears at this point, I sent off an email to the museum's contact email threatening to go to the media and tell everyone I know just how they treat prospective customers. Today, I got an email from the museum's vice president of marketing and customer relations, asking me to give him a call this afternoon. I did, and we talked things over. In the meantime, I had entered another contest the museum was running, for a VIP prize package for the midnight showing for the "biggest Harry Potter fan in the Quad Cities". The VP told me he really liked my entry, and I was in the running for the prize. An hour or so later, he called back, informed me that while I hadn't won that contest, he was going to give my family tickets to see the movie anyway as kind of a peace offering. I gladly accepted, and we'll be seeing the movie in Imax 3D Saturday afternoon, for free! So, all in all, I think this worked out well for everyone. I won't continue with my negative word-of-mouth campaign, and I get to see the movie for free. I told the VP that while having the contest aimed toward smartphone users was fine with me, failing to mention it caused confusion and inconvenience, and alienated some of their clientele. Hopefully, the museum learned something useful for the future. He really impressed me with the way he handled this.

My only quibble one was section, and that is only because I'm a picky picky costume person.  It is hard to watch movies sometimes because you catch yourself critiqueing the technical stuff.

I went last night also. The theatre was packed! We got there just after 9pm for a 12:20 showing. We waited in a line that went outside and wrapped around the building for about 45 mins, slowly feeding its way inside. (And that line was only people going to four of the 18 screens.) We were seated in the theatre by just after 10pm, which was nice. We weren't in one of the bigger theatres, but it felt like a pretty decent size once the movie started.

And now we come to the movie itself. Overall, I liked it. But I definitely did think it had some problems, more so than pt1.

****SPOILER ALERT****

The parts I didn't like -
Firstly, and I think this dates back from a lack of info in HBO and DHpt1, is all the stuff with finding the diadem. Because Harry never saw it in the room of requirement in HBP, and wasn't shown the recreation of it in pt 1 by Xenophilius Lovegood, he really had nothing to go on in order to find it. So the whole bit felt very awkward and forced, and the conversation with the Grey Lady lacked the backstory about Voldemort's travels in Albania and the Bloody Baron, which the book provides. But this is still a book-to-movie problem I could fairly easily overlook.

What I really didn't like was how Harry presented himself in the Great Hall, in front of all the students and Snape. He is supposed to sneak into Hogwarts, and the Carrows are supposed to be attacked in the Ravenclaw tower, etc, where we again find out a little more about the diadem. Putting him right in front of Snape and the Carrows, where they could easily kill him in a moment makes no sense.

And the worst thing, IMO, was the killing of Nagini and Voldemort. I felt like it was such a lack of drama in both situations, even though I could tell they changed it to try to make it more dramatic. But in the book, when Neville kills Nagini, it's such a moment, whereas in the movie, it sort of got lost in the shuffle. And I didn't like that Voldemort couldn't see Nagini die. And then the Voldy/Harry fight was just so strange, especially once they jumped off the castle together (which was stupid in itself). And Voldy's actual death was sooo anticlimactic. It was really a letdown.

A few small complaints I have were the lack of screen time for Fred's death, which is the 2nd worst death in the series in my opinion (after Dobby's), the lack of Percy's reconciliation, and the fact that they didn't use the Room of Requirement as much as they should have (like bringing the Order members in that route, and getting all the students out).

On the other hand, some of the parts that stood out as nearly perfect were Snape's memories, which had me in tears the entire scene, the Resurrection Stone (I actually felt more of an impact from it in the movie than in the book!), and Kings Cross.

****END SPOILER****

After the movie, everyone slowly left the theatre. By the last 5 mins of the credits, I was the only one left, but I just couldn't force myself to leave before the entire movie was over. And then afterwards, I really did feel like I had an empty hole somewhere in my stomach. I think I'm now sort of in denial that it's actually over.

When you go, bring lots of tissues. Or a stuffed animal. I had my owl, Dobby, with me, and I found myself hugging him tightly for a whole lot of the movie. I don't think I would have wanted to be distracted by messing with tissues.

I'm seeing it again tonight in IMAX, so I may post another review once I've had another chance to digest.

Just got back....I am completely emotionally drained!    Loved it!   Needed lots of tissues.

SPOILER TALK!!!!!!

I agree Lady Rebecca, I was pretty disappointed they didn't show Fred's death onscreen.   The whole sequence with Snape in the pensieve however, nicely done!   I bawled!!!!!   I wondered why they left out Percy's reconciliation?   Then just little things, like at the end, they didn't show the references to Teddy Tonks.  No book to movie is ever going to be perfect.

All in all though, it was just....phenomenal.  I'm going to see it again next week. Once wasn't enough for me to fully absorb it.

Wizards Hacking Lexington Road Sign
Some messages from the wizarding world showed up on a Lexington road sign early Thursday morning, just in time for the midnight release of the final Harry Potter movie.

Someone apparently hacked into electronic road signs in the Palomar area. An LEX 18 viewer shot photos of the sign around 12:30 a.m. It read "Death Eaters Ahead" and "Muggles Beware."

A short time later, officials fixed the sign and it once again silently alerted motorists to construction in the area.

I saw the movie this afternoon, in Imax 3D. A-MAZ-ING! And that's not just from the 3D and giant screen. This was an epic, wild, exhilerating end to the magical journey. I would have been stupendously happy with the film had I seen it in a regular old movie theater in 2D. Though, I will admit to feeling a little empty inside when the credits started rolling and I realized that this was the end. I'll add my voice to the call for tissues. I even got a little leaky a couple of time.

I saw it for the 2nd time today, in IMAX 3D this time. Strangely enough, the things that only sort of bothered me on my first viewing bothered me even more on the 2nd, so now I'm really not sure how I feel.

SPOILER!

Voldemort's death was what really got me. There was absolutely no reason to make it that stupid except that they wanted to have a "neat effect" for the 3D viewings. It was beyond stupid, and it made me hate that moment more than I ever hated Voldemort, because watching it in 3D vs 2D, you can completely see what they were going for. Lame. Movies should be more about plot and drama and emotion, rather than special effects. What is the world coming to?!

*Steps off Soapbox*

On the other hand, Snape's memory scene is just wonderfully beautiful, once again. I hear there are rumours buzzing about supporting actor noms, and I think I might agree. Alan Rickman really did that scene justice.

On the other hand, Snape's memory scene is just wonderfully beautiful, once again. I hear there are rumours buzzing about supporting actor noms, and I think I might agree. Alan Rickman really did that scene justice.

Alan Rickman was just AMAZING!!!!!!!  He definately deserves to win something.

The pensieve scene left me sobbing.  Rickman was beyond good and deserves awards, many, many awards.  The Nagini/Voldy death scenes were anticlimatic and robbed Neville of his well-deserved moment of bada$$ery.   It bugged me to no end that Voldedmort could feel the horcruxes being destroyed.

But it was a fine ending to a great series & I plan to see it again.  Team Snape!

Speaking of Snape, don't know if any of you have seen this catchy parody:

You're welcome, Taffy.  It took me a while to figure out what was up with the girl holding the stuffed owls.  Then it hit me that she was singing "Hoo".  Duh.  :)

We've been enjoying some of the wizard rock groups that have sprung up over the years since Harry and the Potters.  (Draco and the Malfoys, Remins and the Lupins, the Parselmouths, etc...) You have to weed through a bunch of poor to mediocre songs, but there are a few gems hidden in there.  Some of the lyrics are hilarious.

Quite possibly the most awesome I've seen in a long while!  ;D I figued out everyone but 2: the one in glasses next to Neville & the one in purple next to Prof. McGonagal.??? I want to say they're Luna's dad & Prof. Sprout but Idk for sure...

Well done. Not sure I knew who everyone was either.
I saw the movie again in non 3D. I really did not see much difference. I enjoyed it as much both times! Sad it is over.

I think I've figured out most of them, but who are the redhead in glasses and the silver-haired man in glasses?

I think maybe the redhead in glasses is Percy, based on his dressy clothing; and the silver haired man is Olivander.

I agree with both of those. Most definitely its Percy, since the rest of the Weasley family is represented around him.

So I'm guessing it's Charley in the plaid? I was forgetting about Charley.

I'm wondering about Professor Sprout as well. She doesn't seem to fit in as a "major" character. Everyone else in the picture had a more substantial role in the series. I don't know who else the witch in purple might be, though.

He could also be Luna's father, since I think the young girl he's next to is Luna.

I'm gonna be one of the first set of folks allowed into the Pottermore website! I've been watching the site for the past few days for the "Magical Quill" clue of the day, but have always missed out. My wife found it this morning while I was at work, and managed to get us both signed up. Here's the message I got when I activated my account:

QuoteCongratulations!
You've successfully validated your early access Pottermore account. You will be one of the lucky few to shape the experience before the site opens to all in October.

You may have to wait a few weeks for your Welcome email to arrive as we can't let everyone into the Beta site at the same time.

We look forward to seeing you.

I've also signed up for the Pottermore beta on the second clue.  My dog woke me up at 4am that night, so I thought I'd just check.  Glad I did.  :)  Looks like it will be a fun site!  There were preview images posted on Twitter awhile back:

The anticipation of the site opening is unbearable for us over here.  I think this is mainly due to the withdrawal we are having since the books and movies are over.  :)

Just curious if anyone else has made it in to Pottermore, yet.  I was finally sent my letter yesterday, but my daughter and sis who also signed up for the beta haven't received anything.  So, I don't know anyone on there, yet.

I promised to wait for my sis to get hers, but I couldn't resist taking a peek.  ;)

I'm so bad.  **Beats head with lamp.**  I've already went ahead to the 9th chapter!  **Irons hand**  Can't help myself!  **Slams door on foot**  I need help!  :D  I'm in serious Potter withdrawal.  My sis is going to shoot me!  :O

Have patience.  My daughter and sis both finally got in.  I'm guessing it's in the order you registered.  Looks like there's already more than 380, 000 students in at this time.  According to http://insider.pottermore.com/ they are ramping up the speed of the welcome letters.  But, they keep stalling to fix things.  :)

My daughter and I are both Ravenclaw!  Yay!!  Sis is Hufflepuff.

Not true.  This isn't even hinted at in either the book or the movie, to me.  Especially not the movies.  They are clearly two different species of snake.  The one Harry set free was a Burmese Python.  The one portrayed as Nagini was, I believe, closer to a reticulated python.  I'll have to watch again to verify this.  Different patterns entirely, though.  Therefore not the same snake.  Besides, Nagini would have already been a Horcrux and closely guarded by Voldy as a pet.  I'm sure he would have been cared for by a Deatheater somewhere.  That's my opinion.  However, it always bothered me that the snake in the Sorcerer's Stone winked.  Snakes can't wink.  They have no eyelids.  Argh...Hollywood...geez...  :)

Lady Neysa- I haven't played that much either recently, though I do enjoy how you get to earn house points for the cup. I just logged in yesterday to check things out, and it turns out that the house cup is going to be awarded on July 5th!
