Title: Ithilien Ranger
Post by: Squire Mickey on December 09, 2009, 10:55:11 AM
Well good greetings one and all. I have been taking a bit of a departure from  my pirate persona and have put together a LOTR inspired garb for an Ithilean Ranger. These where the Gondorian soldiers who patrolled Ithelian, the eastern most part of Gondor and closest to Mordor. They where warriors of stealth, bow and blade.  Here is my versions:

Absolutely AWESOME.
You are going to sweat your butt off and lose 5 pounds in water weight at BARF but its totally freaking awesome.
I love it.
I particularly like the quiver and the bracers, nice tooling job

Yes, this is indeed a cool weather item. I am currently making 2 more complete outfits for Michael McFukker and Hector Smith. We will be unveiling the Ranger Company at the Hogesmead Festival in Gainesville in January. Hopefully it will be cool those weekends...

BTW, we are currently accepting new members :-)

Oohhh
Do you accept female rangers??  ;D
How do you keep the bracer lining from sliding around and bunching since its separate from the bracers??

now you have to tell what Hogsmead Festival is

Absolutely we accept female rangers. They were among the most deadly! We actually may have another female ranger joining us as well. PM and we can chat,

the underbracers are made of suede. They have grommeted and cord closures. They come down to just over your 1st knuckles and have a cut out for your thumb. Once the are on, they are not moving, believe me. The bracers then buckle over the top.

Nice! It looks like we have the same sword.

I made a gorget based on the rangers' a while back.

Funny you mention the sword. I have been searching for someone who has done a Gondorian sword. No on seems to have done one. I am hoping to modify the costume sword that I found that was sort of close...

It looks like the guard on yours might be different but it's kind of hard to tell in those pictures. The rest of the hilt looks very similar. This is mine:

Actuallly yours is different. Mine is quite, shall we say "inexpensive"...
Yous is way nicer  :D

The gondor sword actually had an almost half circle guard on it with a circular pomel with the 7 circles of the city of Minas Tirath engraved in tt.

Here it is:

Yeah, mine isn't a replica of the ranger swords; it just reminded me of them. Yours looks nice. Mine is actually quite inexpensive. I got it here (http://www.shelterdist.com/product/W2873/41_Medieval_Sword_Sharp_with_Pouch.html).

VERY nicely done!

I'm surprised they never did a Gondorian sword replica.  It seems like they did everyone else's.

Squire Mickey, is this Ranger Company of yours limited to Florida and to the Rangers of Ithilien?  If not, this TX Dunedain Ranger might like to join too!

I owe you some thanks as well. You gave me the measurements of your  yoke a while back and it was just what I needed to get my measurements right.

I didn't get the replica yet. Still trying to find one. The sword I have is almost the same as yours (you where right!) and it was also VERY inexpensive. The good thing is that it is light...

Splendid! I do suggest giving your clothes, especially the leather, a more worn look (you can find plenty of aging techniques online) if you're going for authenticity. It looks too shiny and new to think you'd been rangering in it :) Distressing the cloak hem would also help. But otherwise the costumes look great. Very nice job.

You make an excellent point! It does all look quite new (as it is  :P). Truly though if we are going to go for movie accuracrey you are very correct.

The hem on my cloak is indeed quite distressed, but the other 2 are not. The other green cloak is actually quite beautiful and I doubt my friend would be interested in distressing it too much (an I cant really blame him). We may just have to spin that a bit with our story line  8)

Perhaps it's clothing recently purchased/created (as it is in real life?)? Perhaps your characters needed better disguise from certain folk, and tis why your clothing looks so new ;) (Just a few thoughts.)

But wonderful job with the garb, though! :) Very imposing!

That's some good looking garb, I do say!  I was always intrigued by Captain Faramir and his Rangers of Ithilien from Professor Tolkien's books, and I remember at one point during my youth making an outfit of my own.  The mask I came up with was different, though.  It fit completely over my head and eyes, leaving my nose and mouth exposed.  Never got any photos of it, though.  That was something like...25 years ago at least!  I've recently thought about creating a Northern Ranger outfit, one of the Grey Company.  I'd have to shave my beard to do it properly, though, and my wife hates that.

Anyway, I hope to see you and your Ranger Company out and about at a faire one day!

~Ken

It looked great in person this weekend at BARF. I was very envious, and when you unfurled the banners at the drum circle at the end of the day, I felt like everyone should be shouting for Gondor.

It kills me that I missed that Rob! Damn booth vending!

Here are some great shots of McFukker and Hector. Hopefully someone got a shot of the brief time we where all together!
