Title: Title of woman who oversees the unmarried ladies?
Post by: NorthBayDreamer on December 20, 2009, 09:10:25 AM
The role is in a large noble (not royal) household.  The ideas is that she is the guardian/mother hen of these woman and must keep them in line and not be flirting.

A couple of people think that there is a specific title for the role.

Thoughts?

I think I have seen the term "mother of the maidens" used.  Hope this helps.

Merry Christmas

Nurse or Nursemaid would be appropriate (think Juliet's Nurse). The Lady of the house would also be in charge of her waiting gentlewoman (or ladies-in-waiting if it were a royal household).
