Michigan will put a smoking ban in affect May 2010. I was wondering how it will change our faire. Will there still be smoking allowed in the bars? The ban states that smoking in bars and restaurants is prohibited but does that effect anything outside? Do the bars count as buildings? I figured that since a lot of states have had this law in place for a while people from those states could give me an idea what to expect.
California has had smoking bans for quite awhile.
No problems, smokers go off site.
Florida has a smoking ban.. BUT, if the bar does not serve food of any kind it is okay to smoke in it. As far as outside is concerned...
at BARF it is okay to smoke at the pubs because they are outside.. Not sure how your buildings are in Michigan. Also, not sure if the ban will be 100%

Well I just called the MRF office and they said that they had a meeting this morning and haven't decided what's going to happen yet.
TN has a smoking ban but as I remember the faire always had designated areas anyway, as opposed to just smoking anywhere you want.
Colorado has been smoke free for a while..
But since it is an outdoor venue I havent seen a change from before the ban.. But then again i dont get out of the shop that often to see .
There are different cities in Texas that have smoking bans but that hasnt affected our two major faires. As long people don't smoke inside the shops, then they are free to smoke whereever they'd like outside. Not sure about the indoor pubs, though I don't recall seeing many people smoking inside those...
I would love to see designated smoking areas at our faire. Too many thoughtless smokers dropping their cigarette butts all over the place instead of throwing them away. They were even in the childrens realm! :( Yuck.
thank god you guys are up on the news. that way I can come here and see the latest poop.
I would love for the may 2010 michigan no smoking law to go into effect. maybe then I'll breathe easier at (dancing) nightclubs.
I would love to see Mich. Ren Fest (Holly) have no smoking on over 50% of the grounds. I, too, am sick of seeing cigarette/cigar butts thrown away (while still lit or snuffed out) out the car window/on the ground. (our pets who walk the grounds think so too).
I live in California, and I love the smoking bans. The Faires that I attend have designated smoking areas, and it seems to work out well.
I doubt it will affect faire, as the bill is aimed at indoor establishments. Personally, I find the bill a load of bovine poopie, it should be up to the establishments owner whether he chooses to allow smoking or not.
Well MRF has gotten a lot of complaints about the smoking and cigarette butts so they might do something about it even if they don't have to. They said they would post something on the website when they make a decision.
I hope they just start having smoking sections. I hate taking my little sister-in-law and watch her make faces as we pass through a cloud of smoke. And it seems like half the time I start eating some yummy treat at faire someone standing around me lights up. Yucky!
At TRF Sea Devil tavern, it's open air, so people do smoke there. I don't really know what the rules are about smoking indoors at TRF. I'm sure the moment that someone posts anything about it, there will be a PC git run to the PC police and whine about it, so I'm not about to be the person that says what I've seen happen anywhere.
No word from MRF yet but.. wow I think they should start selling these in bars and resturants where you can't smoke.

It would be lovely to breathe fresh air at faire. There are several places at TRF and Scarby I just can't get near for all the smokers.Several shows I can't go to also. Open air is not fresh air when so many smoke. Designated smoking areas and smoke free shows and pubs would be wonderful.
Apparently MRF has ruled that you can't smoke in any building with a solid roof.... so basically no difference.
Awesome, good of them.
