Title: Whats on your belt?
Post by: WindChime on May 08, 2008, 10:17:05 PM
I was just wondering how many of us have belts that weigh more then a small child because of all of the stuff we carry around.
I have at least 20 sets of brass bells
6 fox tails
2 oak leaf bell sets from Griffen Works
mug strap
Leather mug
little knife
small cloth pouch
3 small windchimes(hence the nickname)
small wooden pail
1 brass feather
feather fan with a mirror on back
Leather strap with acorn design and more bells
1 small wooden spoon
A new silver bell from Griffen Works
A burgendy sheep with a shaker egg inside
small black pouch for favor pin storage
1 Big headed doll

Depends on if I'm working at the booth or not.  If working, then just a couple pouches to keep it light.  Otherwise, I have a plethora of goodies to hang off my belt....I could probably use three for the amount of stuff I have.   ;D

Large leather pouch
Small pouch (from midwinter exchange - thanks divapixie)
Pewter mug
It's not on my belt, but I also carry a basket on most days.

I could win a C.O B. contest.  Mug, chalice, wizard wishing stones, athame, pouch, wand, fan, hanging pouch, dagger and whatever else I can fit on there! LOL!

Two pouches, a string of bells, a dagger, a pewter-looking mug, a couple of scarves, and some skirt hikes that I have yet to actually use (got them near the end of faire last year).

Mug (and holder obviously)
Small leather pouch
rapier
"ink canteen" <--- I play a poet, so ink is a MUST have! And yes, it is an actual wood canteen that I use for ink.
Quill pen in a sword frog on my right hip
my cross
Larger pouch to carry my notebook

Yeah, that's enough I think. Belt weighs enough as it is!

My belt is sounding light compaired to some of these I'm hearing!

normally, you'll find on my belt:
*one large(ish) leather pouch what I keep most of my junk I carry around (car keys, wallet, scheduals, bits of string, misc. trinkets...)
*a small pouch hanging off the larger one
*a belt knife
*a small pouch stuffed with pipe tobacco
*sometimes I'll have various tools hanging from my belt

if I'm visting other faire where I'm not working:
*all the above plus
*a second belt that I made specificly to hold a Napoleonic infintry sword (not a replica!)
*leather cuffs
*a leather flail

no tankard straps for me, I walk around with a wine skin.

Typically just my pouch and camera... my fan if it's really hot, and a tiny umbrella if it looks like rain.  I don't subscribe to that Fair mania that says you need to drag around everything you own strapped to your waist.

Wow...a plethora of items on people's belts for me to steal...err look at.

I don't have much on my belt.  I have a leather sporran on my belt.  I haven't drunk enough mead to have a mead belly hanging off my belt yet.

But I encourage the ladies to hang things off their belts so I have an excuse if I am caught looking at their booty.

Regards,

CB

Hi,

I'm new here, and relatively new to all this. I'd like to add that I am...well...a lightweight when it comes to my belt. I wear a leather cross draw belt with a Clecy sword and a small pouch. Dagger in the boot. You guys carry around everything...! Do you use this stuff, or is it just props?

I actually do use most of my stuff...the pickle is a prop (and this year a stuffed beaver doll...make your own jokes).  Having your stuff hanging off your belt helps keep your hands free and limits the number of items you accidentally leave behind at a pub (thank you to the people who continuously returned Bob's walking stick  :D).

I cant speak for everyone here, but typically, most of the stuff carried on a belt during faire gets used.  for obvious reasons most weapons carried are only for show, but often even those will have some purpose other then just looking good with the outfit.

I know that of the stuff I carry at my local faire, I use everything on my belt, why carry the extra weight if I'm not going to need it?

Both of my pouches are used: one for money/business cards/cell phone/keys, etc.; the other for Kiss Cards and other guild cards.

My dagger is kept in sheath but is functional in daily life, it too is used, just not on site.

My mug I use constantly....rare that it is actually on my belt...LOL

The favors are obviously not used, but rather displayed...so those, and the tail, are strictly for show, but everything that I carry that could be functional...is functional.

Woodsman archer outfit

2 pouches and that's it.

Medium pouch for all my sundry storage.  Cell phone, ID, asthma inhaler, bee-sting kit, saftey pins, money, etc.

Small pouch with archery gear.  Spare bowstring, period arrowheads to show when talking with folks about archery, feathers & silk thread for when I'm sitting around in the shade under a tree fletching arrows.  Coupla strands of leather lacing (has come in handy during an emergency more often than you'd expect.

Swordsman outfit

Apparel belt:

1 pouch for junk like the medium one above
Dagger frog

Sword belt:

Rapier hanger

If I'm not actually using the tankard at the moment, and it's hanging off my belt, it looks like more hanging from the belt because of all the mugbling hanging from the tankard

Pewter mug, and pouches.  Noting terribly spectacular unless one looked inside my pouches.  This year I am working part time and staying on site at Bristol, so I actually have a pair of earphones (to use during setup prior to gate) in my pouch. Otherwise, tip money, notepad and pen, something to make me smell better, and, while I am working, my signature eyeball sunglasses.

When I feel like it I may have a timepiece, tail, and fan on my belt too.

Hmm...

As of last year (on my rope belt):
Rosary

As of this year:
Rosary
Pouch for cellphone, ID, money, etc.
Pouch for book (haven't decided if it will "be" a personal book or a "copy of the Scriptures", etc.)
Quill (If I can think of a holder)
Ink (if I can get some ideas on how to work it)
Water contained in my leather wine skin. (Heat isn't so nice to large folk.)

We've got a writer character at Bristol this year who carries around a small handheld writing surface.  He's got a little pot or two of ink inset into it, as well as a quill holder and a sheaf of parchment.  It's fairly compact and probably relatively light (likely made of pine or some other light wood) as he weilds it one-handed like a painter's pallette.  Might be a possible option for you?

I know that there's been some pics posted of him in the various albums linked in the www.bristolboard.com forums.  I seem to have managed not to have saved one of him yet.  :(  I've got a request out for a link, which I'll post here once there's some response.

We're currently in the process of putting together my nephew's outfit and gear. We nixed the idea of him having a sword since it would look stupid having a 5 ft. tall boy dragging around a 4 ft. long sword. So here is what we have planned:

1. A custom belt and baldric made of the same material. Since he's 11, normal baldrics seem to be way too wide. We'll get two belts and have one of the local craftsmen to create the baldric from the second belt. Here's the style we liked the best:

2. A pewter and brass tankard

Note: All weapons will be "Peace-Tied" with Teflon zip ties.

3. A flanged Italian Mace hung off the baldric

4. A Venetian stiletto

5. A traditional solid wood crossbow mounted on the back and supported by modified tankard straps.

6. A small clip-on pull cord emergency siren ('ya never can tell......)

OK. here  goes,

FAIRY

-small glass cork top bottle of fairy dust (glitter)
-small dagger
-leather strap holding pewter goblet
-leather pouch (holding money, keys, cell)

plan to add more shiny objects :)

GYPSY

same as above but small dagger is in cleavage and medium size dagger on belt (nix the fairy dust)

LADY  or when carrying my grandnieces

nothing! everything is in a basket wrapped in scraps of fabric used on prior ren-garb. (My version of a 1500's diaper bag)

By the way,  what is the purpose of a fox tail?

My belt is new this year, so there isn't much on it. Just a pouch for my phone and money and mundane whatnots, and a fan. One of my goals for this year is to buy a mug, and with that I'd need a mug strap, so that'll add a few pounds. I'd love some sort of pointy weaponry, but I don't have any.  :'( There's always the slightest of chances that I could borrow one of Lady Elizabeth's, but I still don't believe her that you can get away with just a tip on the blade. It needs to be peace-tied, I'm telling you....

Well it just goes to show that I have my own sheathed dagger as you know plus there was one my father had once upon a time. I was digging through david's cave and found it. That little bugger has been hiding it from me. It's a nice one too. I remember having seeing it on the wall in my father's Armory room but I didn't think Kathy mailed it to us with the rest of the swords. Perhaps you should consider investing in one of your own this year.

That bugger...I'm not suprised that he has things cached in that hole of his. Since you already have one, what say you to just letting me BORROW it? Just for Opening Day. Please?  :)

I'll see what I can do. He does have a say in it. Afterall it is partially his. However it's just for the day. I could probably let you borrow mine and use my father's for myself. I don't see why David would have any objections to that.

- large leather pouch
- small dagger/knife

I'm sure I'll end up collecting more stuff.  Just reading this thread has me thinking I need to figure out how to carry water with me (probably a wineskin or similar).  I'll be keeping my eyes open for a fan and a tankard as well.

I'd like to ask again what has already been asked and not answered (ha!): what is with the fox tails that some women carry?  And bells?  Inquiring minds, dontcha know!

I'm going to jump in and try to give the short answer on this one ('cause the tails one can get really long)...So as far as I know and have gleaned from other people's answers (and my own reasons for wearing said items):
The bells people wear just to give the festive jingly sound...bells just sound like faire ya know?  ;D
Tails are worn just for the fun of it mostly, but some people wear them as an homage/aproximation of a "flea fur" (although, from what I have seen if someone is wearing a flea fur they are usually more intricate than a simple tail).  There can be bawdy suggestions for the tail ("a little tail at faire...") or not.
Both items are a personal preference and what makes you feel like you have added that "perfect faire touch" to your garb.

Now you will get a million other interpretations for both items, because there ARE a million other interpretations...like I said, it's what feels just right for you.  Go for either and have fun with it!  ;D ;D ;D  Huzzah!

Errr...was that soapboxing???  Felt like it...sorry...first cup of coffee you know.  :P

Thanks for your answer, Amy!  I had a feeling it was something like that.

Ok here goes:

Leather pouch
2 small cloth pouches
"Pewter" mug with mug strap
fox tail
dagger (s)
Lg ring with "skeleton keys" (mainly when in pirate mode though)
will be adding a flask this year

For some reason, I always wind up leaving faire with more things attached to my belt than I walked in the gates with though....go figure

Just purchased a nice 0 ring belt off Ebay, so I have that, plus a fwide eather waist belt I found at the mall of all places.

Also hand made a red fringed sash, so I have my mug, leather pouches, replica pirate pistol, empty bottle of rum (depending if I use the mug) and various fringe.

I wish MD let you bring daggers in, I have a a nice one I would wear.

We've been slowly putting together a noble class pair of suits for my 11 yr. old nephew for next year's local state festival at Muskogee and Scarby. Some of the accessories (and fabrics) took some time to locate. We've settled on who will make the matching utility belt and baldric but were undecided on a tankard. A fancy wooden one would not fit with the suits. We looked at many companies selling tankards online, but none seemed to be extraordinary. Most were fairly plain and a had interesting Celtic scrollwork. We came across this piece offered out of a antiquities auction house from Sweden and it's being shipped here now. It's solid brass, circa 1840-70. We may have to find a local plastics company to create some type of interior liner so it can be functional (interior shows slight age and corrosion from other photos).

P.S. - He knows if he leaves it on a table anywhere.....he'll be a "dead boy walking"  ;)
