Title: Colored Contact Lenses
Post by: Auryn on February 02, 2010, 11:08:48 AM
I have been wanting to get colored contacts for faire for several years now.
I do not wear contacts in regular life, however I do wear prescription glasses sometime because I am nearsighted (for driving at night, going to the movies and the like).

Can anyone make any recommendations for a reliable online source for colored contacts that wont cost $100 a pair??
Also do I need to get a prescription even if they are prescription contacts??

They are going to cost about $100

I have some and i am getting a new pair of WildEyes right now.... you do need a prescription too.

I wouldn't mess around with bootleg contact sites.... your eyes are pretty sensitive organs and you could seriously regret getting some cheap things to poke in your eyes for faire.

Good news is...they last forever so just gather the funds and make a one time expense. (Unless you're like me and decide to change the color)

ALSO... I do not recommend cats eyes or any contact that had a distorted pupil region. These tend to float and rotate and make vision difficult and cause headaches.
I'm getting some Wildfire and Red Hots this time.... http://www.wild-eyes.com/flash.htm (http://www.wild-eyes.com/flash.htm)

The movie quality ones Auryn run almost 300-400 per pair, so $100 is a bargin.

I would be really hesitant to wear cheap ones for an extended period of time. My wife wears disposable ones and they sometimes have defects in them when she opens a pack. She gets terrible headaches in just a few hours of wearing them.

Good to know
see why I ask you guys  ;D

I don't want anything crazy- just a bright purple color :) hehe thats not crazy at all.
I def don't need movie quality as I would wear them just once in a while in mundane life and def for faire.

Maybe I will have it be my birthday present for this year.

I need to get a vision exam sometimes soon anyway (havent had one in about 8 years) so I will ask when I have it done.

Would bright purple be something an optometrist can get or do I have to find my own reputable supplier??

As color contacts have become popular.  Most optometrist that I have gone to have them.  But also watch out for what you get.  It is possible to be allergic/or basically your eyes reject a certain brand of contacts.  I have had that problem a couple of times.

As long as you don't have a really odd prescription.... most Optometrists will carry one line or the other. But check their prices because Wal Mart has some pretty good prices on basic colored lens.

In my case.... I have a really weird prescription so I have to find a place that carries it and order on line.

Even if you get non-prescription lenses you still need an eye exam for your diameter and base curve.  If you use the wrong ones, they can be quite painful as they will not sit properly on your eye.

Right on...just making sure.

I should do some looking around and see if they make fancy contacts for astigmatism yet.

I know my doctor carries some in his office, and obviously can special order them for RX and such, but I dunno how much they run. I was actually going to ask him when I go to my next appointment, since I want green ones to go with my garb. (My eyes are blue heehee)

ohhh that is freaking cool.
And I agree Kate B rocks in those movies- I own them all and just fyi theyve announced they are doing another and she will be in it.

Guess I will have to save up my pennies.
One of my mom's friends works for an optometrist and I was going for an exam anyway- we will see what he says.

If you can scrape the money together try to get two pair.  I wear contacts for my extremely poor eyesight and I don't know how many times I've cut a contact in half by accident when I go to screw the cap on my lens case  ::)

And not to mention that contacts are only good for about 8 hours before they start irritating the eye due to drying out.  Pop out the first pair, eat something while letting your eyes wet themselves again for about half an hour to an hour, and then pop in the second pair.

My eyes are VERY dry and I can kill contacts in minutes, so I have fund relatively cheap contact lubrication drops that you use while they're in your eye work very well. :) Just make sure to get the right kind for your type of contacts (hard/soft/etc)

The site that I posted allows you to buy the singularly which could save you a bit if you want to have a replacement on hand. Although that means both your eyes would have to be the same size which is not always the case.
