Title: Dyeing thread??
Post by: amy on February 05, 2010, 01:46:26 PM
Does anyone remember a thread on dyeing?   Might it be here or within another section of the site?   I am looking to dye some 100% cotton frogs for the front of a dress and would love to get some tips on what product to use for this small project and advise for good results.

Thanks in advance!

Having use Rit dye on two occasions over the past couple of years, my advice is to choose a color as close to your intentions as possible, and follow the package directions.  Some of the instructions sound goofy, they have you add laundry soap at one point, but it works rather well.
Since you are coloring 100% cotton, Rit is a fine choice.  Some may prefer other brands, although I have never used them.

http://www.renaissancefestival.com/forums/index.php?topic=6563.0 (http://www.renaissancefestival.com/forums/index.php?topic=6563.0) had several tips on dyeing cotton and linen, I bet they would carry over to your cotton frogs...

Every time I see the subject line, I think you're looking for instructions on how to dye thread, not for a thread on how to dye! LOL

Thanks all for the tips!  This is such a small item I can probably work in a 5 gallon bucket and not even splash anything.   Luckily I only have to coordinate with... and don't actually have to match any specific color.   Rit is easy to find and not expensive so I may try it out in a practice run too.  I'll keep reading and post some results!
