This will be my second year working at TRF. Last year, I worked at a bakery and enjoyed it so much...however, a friend and I are considering working as faeries this upcoming season...but we know nothing about the gig. Any help would rock! Some questions I have-when do we apply? What are the job requirements? What is it exactly that you do as a faerie, and how much should we expect to make pay-wise? Thanks!
Other than being so bloody adorably cute that people fall in love with you while simultaneously going into a diabetic coma? ;D
kidding, I love the fae, they remind me of what faire meant to me when I was younger
Auditions for Performance Company will be May 1st and May 8th. http://www.texrenfest.com/auditions.html (http://www.texrenfest.com/auditions.html) Check the link for more info.
I don't know the current TRF requirements for fairies, but I have played with them lots when I go as a fae. So take my info as it is, not from the horses mouth... haha
The TRF fairies are meant to be the shy and the not talking much kind. In years past they weren't allowed to talk at all. Now they talk very little and usually using some kind of accent like a Russian accent or something. Think flitting and aloof and beautiful and high energy. Their main activities during the day are playing with children and getting their picture taken with children. If you love kids and like pulling out the kid in you, then this is great for you!
As like all people on cast, they are required to stay in specific areas of the festival for the duration of the day each and every day. The fairy weekend they are involved with the games played by the patrons.
I've heard cast doesn't make much, but no idea how much??
If you do get on cast as a fairy, do let us know! I'll play with you this year!!! Last year we had serious trouble finding where the fairies were hanging out. They moved the location from years past... haha
Some clarification should be made here, if you come out for auditions, if you are cast, YOU WILL BE PLACED IN THE GROUP THAT THE DIRECTOR THINKS YOUR TALENTS WILL BE BEST UTILIZED. That may be in the Fae group, or the Germans, or the Italians, etc.
As far as pay is concerned, I am not at liberty to discuss this, nor should any other cast member, past or present. I can say, the longer you are on cast, the better it gets. Also, you get paid for performance days, not rehearsal, and the cast performs, rain or shine. And be prepared to devote 7 weekends to rehearsals, and 8 for performance, including the 3 day Thankgiving weekend holiday.
I am in no way trying to diminish you're enthusiasm, however, anyone considering auditioning should realize the commitment involved in the process. Do we work hard? You bet we do. I also think we have one of the finest renaissance casts in the country. I think anyone here on RF.com will agree.
and then there's those of us who just beat on metal and grunt at Cap'n Fletcher when he saunters by ;)
(He forgot to mention the part where I get handed a flask/wineskin/mug/bottle and told "Here! Try this!")
*whistles innocently*
Not our fault if you volunteer to try the experimental concoctions :D
woo woo Germans! lol
had to cheer for my group!
I can't tell you how much we get paid. As with any job it's not one of those things you discuss. I will tell you that if you love faire, love the atmosphere, love people, love or appreciate the arts in some way and love being someone other than yourself you will have the time of your life and won't care at all about what number is on that paycheck.
When you audition you audition and then wait for about a month for a phone call telling you if you made the company and where you have been placed. Sadly you don't get to pick... or else we would have 50 faeries and 30 french girls.... sometimes Jeff knows where you go better than you do... I never thought for one minute I would be cast as a German... and now I can't see me anywhere else for awhile! If you want to/ must have to be a faerie... then your best bet is to just attend faire dressed as a faerie.
I believe it should be stated in the rules that all fae must make the noise that hummingbirds do before they attack, before they attack the passerby....That way you have a fighting chance and you know they are coming...if you know the noise a hummingbird makes, then you are aware how much it fits...incidently, being attacked by the attack helicopter of the avian world is just down right embarrassing.
Wow. He just keeps giving us ammo. The poor sap.
Mouse does it to set us up for more of his witty repartee...
You all say that with the grandest amount of respect I am sure.
but of course, my altitude challenged friend... ;D
Ever seen a Brownie go ballistic....want to?
*cuts in*
For all TRF cast, what exactly is the audition process like? I know the website said improv exercises, but what should one expect? It seems so daunting.
I defer that question to Cap'n Fletcher and others who have far better acting chops than I. I merely pound metal into funny shapes :D
Exactly that, I have to say out of all the auditions that I have done in my life. The one that I did to become Broadside was by far the best.
I have always wanted to audition, but I fear that it may leave a bad taste in my mouth. Not knocking working at the faire, but not sure once I get in if I would love it so much as the idea of it...It's a toss up. I lost my acting chops over the years and my discipline is lacking.....

*Nice bearded axes though* ;D
Oh yes. I have gazed upon Breandan's ax and was mightily impressed. Nothing like a good ax hole.
>.<
DOH!
Mouse: My love for faire and ALL faires has only increased!

It is the most fun you will ever have at an audition. I can promise you. We make very sure that you are comfortable and relaxed and encourage you to be yourself and let loose. I've started an audition thread for anyone wanting to know more.

It's probably just lemonade, or something to help replenish his electrolytes. ;) :D
actually, if it's my mug, it's usually blue PowerAde :D
Stacy... he didn't say he DRANK it.... he was just HANDED it......lol
Who, me? What? No... Ummm, yeah, what they said, ummm lemonade, and ummm, just holding it and enjoying the aromas... Hey, look, a bacon tree!! ::)
bacon tree? * looks frantically for bacon tree*

HEY NOW MOUSE! That's just wrong!
HEY NOW!!! Don't make me bring out the dust bombs!
was waiting for Fairy Hell to be unleashed after that... ;)

Death wish. Mouse has a death wish. That's the only explanation.
He'll be the only guy getting his arse kicked, all over TRF, by a bunch of fairies...
*and i'll be laughing me arse off*
You and me both, brother, you and me both.
Oh..I can die happy. Don't misunderstand me, I love me some fairies..The more lithe the better, I say. I shall desist, but hey, if there is to be some Mouse on fairy action, I'm game....unless it's the fairy godfather...and then I reserve the right for a stunt double..any takers?
Mouse, are you familiar with the damage that the piranha- a tiny little fish individually- can do in schools? Fairies come in swarms, my friend, deadly, cute, adorable, glittery winged swarms of death. Didn't you ever see the second Hellboy movie?
yeah... those were tooth fairies. Imagine if the arse fairies were after you... :o
We could drop you off in Montrose so you could find out... ;D
Pay him no mind Mouse, Fraser is missing his squirrel, and he's all out of sorts.
.... :-\
I have the squirrel. It's currently in my lap, being soothed. You know, I speak squirrel, and it said that Fras did a LOT of nasty things to it... Poor dear is traumatized.
Nasty is a matter of perception..just sayin'. Of course in this case, Fraser, that is nasty...*shudders*
I saw the way he was wielding that taser in the other thread. I'm surprised there weren't more squirrels down. If he breaks out the duct tape, I'm leaving.
Ah...shades of Nantuket Sleigh Rides.....
And not nearly so nice, or clean Mouse. Just keep your eyes open and if you hear the sound of duct tape being pulled off the roll, you'll be wanting to sit down as quickly as possible. I'm just saying.
Hey Fras... the little bugger is pressing charges...

dangnubbit! I wondered where my lunch had run off too.... and here i had a nice beer batter whipped up for him....
... wonder if we scared people away who were considering auditioning? :D

I think
Blue may be interested in auditioning (http://www.renaissancefestival.com/forums/index.php?topic=11377.msg237492#msg237492). 8)
that clears up any wondering, then ;)
Yeah, can't imagine what others might be thinking while we are bantering about Fraser with a Taser and a duct taped squirrel. There's a mental image you won't shake easily.

Fraser with a Taser and a duct taped squirrel
That sounds like a good name for a band
I'd go see that band, sounds hilarious!!
What music genre do you think they would play? Grunge Creole?
lol Grunge Creole? I'd love to hear what that sounds like!
It sounds college radio...
but back to brass tacks...where is this bacon tree and is the bacon raw and blooms cooked?
*Damn... my secret pastime is out!*
Well it's not like the sounds of duct tape peeling off a role and a screaming squirell can be easily hidden.
Mmmmmm bacon. I needs it... like now.
BACON!
Thread heist! hehehe
*pink panther music* (enter Inspector Mouse) A HEIST! Something is afoot. Fie, I say. FIE!
Does your dog bite?
Something is on his foot? Well, scrape it off, son!
;D
It's my dignity..I keep dropping it...but you know there is a 5 year rule, so I think it's still good.
Pffffft, You're getting married. You can kiss your dignity good bye!
Sadly, it doesn't kiss on the lips and it costs more than I can afford for...My dignity is an expensive escort. Never had much use for it anyways. False bravado and megalomania is much more desirable!
How about sending some faeries down into the Pirates' Cove... There is an awesome new building down there-- Faeries from the Swamp-- and having a few faeries in the neighborhood wouldn't be a bad thing!!
(shamelessly self-servingly)
