Title: Bodice Colors
Post by: Jademozingo on March 24, 2010, 12:40:31 AM
Okay, so I have decided to order a bodice instead of attemping (and failing) to make another.  My problem is deciding to go with a pretty color (a green or pattern)  or with black so it would be more useful in other garb.  Would the fact I like the pretty green one that could only be used in one or maybe two types of garb outweigh the many that I could get out of a black one?

I wore my black bodice once. I've worn my others *dozens* of times. YMMV, of course, but I find a multi-colored fabric (tapestry/brocade/whatever) to be a lot more versatile, since I can pull different colors for chemises/skirts/etc, and make almost endless variations of ensembles.

I would have serious garb-regret if there was one I really wanted (i.e., your green one) and ended up getting something more "practical" (i.e. your the black one) simply to try to be practical. My 2-cents worth is if you like certain colors, I think you'll find you'll use those colors more often anyway and it will be just as versatile as the black one would have been.

I treat green as a neutral color anyway. Just think of all of the many colors of flowers that all have green stems and leaves!

I'm with the wise ladies above - go with the pretty green or pattern! You should love what you wear. Plus, over time, you'll have a chance to build new themes around your new treasure.

Don't forget that color combinations in period were different then modern color choices.  They would mix and match to be the most visable.  Just a thought.

Some of the makers make reversible ones... mine is black on one side and red/gold on the other.... just a thought.

Reversible Bodices tend to be more practical for all the reasons stated. That way, skirts and chemises of different  colors will coordinate together for many different looks.

I would find out if where you are purchasing does reversible.  I believe only one of my bodices ISNT reversible.  But, if it is not a reversible one, I'd go with the one you have your heart set on...which sounds like the green.  And as another said...green can really be spiced up later on with very beautiful colors and have a completely different look than that which you started out.  My very first bodice was made by Heather with verymerryseamstress.com and the color was...GREEN...  still to this day it is my favorite bodice I own (too bad I'm not as small as I once was..lol!). I have even changed it up and wore a mustard skirt WITH the original green skirt and also a blue.
