Post by: Marcos Charron on April 18, 2010, 07:52:46 PM
OK All,

Can anyone tell me more about the hat Sir Francis Bryan wears in season two and three of The Tudors?. IU need to know more about the shape of the crown so my local hat maker can make one for me!

This particular hat is made of a heavy wool felt that was molded with high steam  on a wooden hat mold, then finished at the edges with Petersham(millinery Grosgrain ribbon.

I could make that hat as Tall Arched hat. But these types of hats were worn more in Elizabeth's time in the 1560's and later, than in Henry's time.

How Crowns of Wool Felt hats are molded, they are done on hat Blocks..http://www.judithm.com/shop/?page=shop/browse&category_id=c3ce9bf5247633b42f166a8539fdb159 (http://www.judithm.com/shop/?page=shop/browse&category_id=c3ce9bf5247633b42f166a8539fdb159) Then after molded, the wool felt is treated with a starch-like substance that sizes and keeps the shape. The process is a long one done by hat makers.

By doing a Google search on Millinery Supplies, one comes up with a truck load of websites. Hat blocks, and I have a few, are not cheap.

All,

Thanks for the help, the local hat maker is getting started next week!

Look for the finished hat on my head at TRF.

Good for you Marcos!

I make hand made hats, but I do not have the hat forming tools needed to steam form wool felt to make Sir Francis Bryan's or other hats. That takes a Hat Master Maker who does that.
