Title: Would 1st time visit to TRF+Camping=Total Insanity?
Post by: SandrineDeLaTombe on May 04, 2010, 06:10:37 PM
I've threatened to make the trek down to TRF for at least five years, this year I'm determined to make it happen. Normally I would opt for a hotel for the weekend, but money concerns and my new spouse's willingness to partake in camping might make that the more viable option. My shyness/lack of social skills means I don't really have any faire friends, so it would really just be the two of us.  My biggest question: is there a good weekend to choose that tends to be better weather-wise? I've lived in Texas long enough to know the weather can be unpredictable, but there are still trends to be observed.

My only other big question is can you drive your car right up to your camp site? Or is the parking lot set off from the actual camping area?

Thanks for any and all help!

Wait a tick... you were too shy to speak to any of us at Scarby.... yet you dare camp at TRF?

Holy Moly !

lol

I too am going to try and attend TRF for the first year... most likely getting a hotel room though.

Lol, that's kind of another reason why I'm asking, Merlin.  Would camping in this sort of environment be complete heck for someone painfully shy who hates talking to strangers? (Seriously, I'm almost 30 years old, you'd think I would have gotten over some of this eventually.)

Merlin, this is where I stayed last year
Homewood Suites by Hilton
29813 IH-45N
Shenandoah , TX 77381
Ph: 281-681-9199

It was a great place and only about 20 minutes to faire.

Clan McLotofus as well as Phoenix Risen are made up of RF Members. You could see about camping with either one of those groups. You know, safety in numbers and all...

As you are so shy, I would think that you might want to stay away from camping any weekend at TRF. There would be people there. And most of them are very friendly. And you take a huge risk of being spoken to in a most friendly way by nearly thousands of people. And that just wouldn't do. No No. Just wouldn't do.

hehehe

But I suppose that beats the alternative of being treated badly by hoards of people. But I am also assuming that you wouldn't like that either.

hehehe

The funny thing about people is, that many of them will either leave you alone, if not down right ignore you if you don't address them first. Most rennies I have found are very libertarian in their behaviors. Leave others alone and they will leave you alone. We have this tendency to meet each other in a sort of middle ground. No one will intrude upon your personal space, where we are not wanted or invited.

Just do yourself one favor. Take the chance that you might just enjoy yourself. You'll never know until you do.

I hope you choose to give us the chance.

It's easy to be shy and camping.  One can be lost in the crowd quite easily and comfortably.  I do it all the time.  (I have written more words here than ever spoke at the faire.)   ;D

The camping is in a big field and unmarked.  The nearest to the wall sections are pretty much taken by various clans.  But the further back one gets, the more smaller groups and one person sites start appearing.  One simply finds an open area, throws up a tent and begin the camping.  Try not to block anyone in with the car though and be aware that way back in the trees one can get blocked in somewhat (people is stupid.)

Warmest greetings, Sandrine!

I was in the same boat as you a few years ago.  Wanted to camp, but didn't know anyone, and was (still am) incredibly shy around strangers.  I happened upon the group known as The Green Flame, headed by Scout Colt (an R/F member) and Robin (not sure if she's a member, but she is well known -in a good way- around TRF) Anyway, they welcomed me in with open arms, provided a safe place to camp and wonderful companionship.  (And, if it wasn't for them, I would not have met my husband)

They are always welcoming new guests and members, so I would fully advise searching them out! :)

I'm also very shy and have camped without any strange social issues coming up. In fact I think I mostly went unnoticed. My first time camping I set up in the middle of McLotofus because I knew them from the forums and trusted them, so I felt safe surrounded by them, even if they didn't notice I was there.  At least I think I was in the middle of them. I saw on the forums where they planned to set up and got there on a Friday and staked my spot where they said. I had no problems and was able to remain shy. To this day they still don't know me, and I'll probably set up among them again this year.

Moral of the story. It's okay to be shy and still camp, you won't have any issues with the other campers.

Just spy (lurk/stalk) on others here on the forums and you can find out where they'll be and you can be there too without having to talk to them about it.

HA!  I closed camp both nights at All Hallow's Eve... and drank more than at Scarby, just not 18 shots in less than an hour.

Merlin, you need to aim for AHE... that's when the freaks come out of the woodwork...err, i mean it's the most "colorful" and you should feel right at home. ( you freak ):D

AHE is like Woodstock mixed with the Burning Man festival... just a bit better behaved and not as much music.

Honestly, Sandrine, if you camp with one of the big clans (McLot, P.R. etc)  they will make you feel welcome... they'll feed ya and booze ya until you say when, help you with your camp, check your garb for malfunctions and make sure your stuff is still there when you come back or leave you alone, if that is what you wish.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with social masturbation... but it's been known to cause blindness to the wonders of camp.  :D ;D

*and you may miss out on a wonderful thing known as LOKI*  ;)

Sandrine,  you and your hubby are more than welcome to camp with our clan, McLotofus.  There are three weekends McLot is in full camp mode, Opening, Hallows and Closing.  The inbetween weekends; there are still quite a few of us, we just may not be in the exact same spot, but close to it.

To answer your question about parking.  You are able to have your car next to your tent and the faire does not permit campers to park in the designated parking lot next to the campgrounds.  We and others use vehicles more or less to make exterior borders and so on.

Kehle!  You had better make yourself know to us this time lol!  ;D  Be sure to let us know when you plan to camp this year and please join us.

To both Kehle and Sandrine:  Send me a note on here if you would like more detail about how our camp runs and of course you are both welcome to sign up on our forum: www. mclotofus. com/ forums!  :D

I must have to agree with all when saying camp, besides when you camp you are only a few minutes from your tent.
If you do the Hotel thing, you will have to sit in the parking lot waiting for a slot to get your car out in line and then it
is bumper to bumper, stop and go far a long time.  That's just my two cents on the subject. Like someone said earlier
there are a lot of places to camp that you can remain shy if you choose to do so.

Thanks for the notes, everyone. My sweetie's birthday is at the end of October, so we're thinking either of the last two weekends of October might be a good one to get out of town for a few days. I'd love to have a group to camp with, for the whole 'safety in numbers' idea. We're generally quiet and easy to manage if the McLotofus clan wants to adopt us. :)

I'm going to check out the McLotofus forums. Oh, and I'm trying my hand at making loki as well. If all goes well, I'll have a batch or two ready just in time for faire.

Don't worry about not knowing anyone out there just yet. It won't take long for you to feel comfortable. I don' t really have any faire friends as well. I usually just go to the faires with my husband and kids. But, this year my husband and I have decided that we are going to go to a few weekends by ourselves and finally start to get to know others that are there. We have camped every year since 2006 and still have not gotten to meet anyone. But, this years different. And I hope to make your acquaintance as well. So, enjoy the fest when you go and yes the camping is sooo much fun!! ;D

my DH and I knew Duckie, who introducted us to El'.  This lead is to try out FoF stuff, which got us to know more local Rennies and RF people.  From there we did Rendevous, and we got to know many more people that way.  We had alot of fun that way.

To be honest if you want to be left alone for a while these guys will let you.  They may come over and make sure you are alright, but once they get the gist you just want some peace, they will  give you as much or little as you want.  ;D

I will say this Rennie's can be very overwhelming in their outgoingness.  If I wasn't use to it from dealing with theater people I might have run the other way.   ;D

A brief synopsis of my 2009 TRF maiden voyage:
I too was a TRF virgin last year. It was suggested (OK I was told) to camp. Soooo I rented a camper and attended opening weekend with a willing wench.

A cold front blew in and a typhoon followed me all the way from Dallas to Conroe that Friday. I outran the typhoon  just as I hit Conroe and was able to set up the camper. Then the weather threw a hissy-fit. Cold, rainy, nasty. We found positions...uum ways to keep warm.

Drums started at night fall. And went non-stop until 3am.

Morning time. It was 40 freakin degrees. Walked to the front gate in the mud. DAYUM left the tickets in the camper.  >:(

The day went nice. Ate like crazy. Garbed up my lady. Watched the shows. Enjoyed the fireworks.

Climbed into bed to the beat of drums again. And the drums continued....ALL night long. Along with yelling, screaming and occasional cries of passion. Not one second of sleep.

Next two trips we stayed in a hotel.

This year I've been asked to try camping again. And even though it was kinda of a P.I.A. I think we'll camp once again for the experiance.  ;D

My own personal opinion of it is try it at least once. Could be like me and totally love it, though I share a few experiences akin to Hercules'. I wouldn't want to try it any other way, but then again I could sleep through a bombardment, but for me it's the atmosphere, and generally who you camp near. But seeing as you know a whole heaping of us, we got you covered.

Thanks for the note, Hercules.  This is the kind of information I definitely wanted. I can only imagine how bad the noise will be if Halloween weekend is one of the busiest, and I'm hoping some ear plugs might help. :) Even the slightest noises will wake me up and keep me awake. I'll have to be drunk AND exhausted to fall asleep with drumming going on all night.

For light sleepers, there is always the family camp.  You can still have fun and visit with everyone, just travel a bit further down the road (walking distance) to family camp, where it's nice and quiet (at least that's what I've been led to believe- I haven't camped there myself).  I still recommend earplugs, as well.

It's quiet if you don't count the mile long train that roles through the "quiet family camp ground" every night about midnight.

The Steel Dragon has ways of letting it's presence be known...

The McLot camp USUALLY quiets down between 12-1... that's when the flood lights get turned off and everyone gangs around the fires.  It may be near the main drum circle but you barely hear it.  If you do, take another couple of shots of Loki... all will be well. ;)

I remember the first year I camped it wasn't the drum circle that I heard all night. We camped near...someone, not sure who, it was a huge place, rugs everwhere inside a huge tent like thing, and the orc drum...I call it the orc drum playing all night. I went to bed dreaming about the orc song in the Return of the King animated adaptation....I may have come out of it with bags under my eyes, but I fell in love with camping that night. That was also the night of the Peabody incident, me climbing Mt. Shiner, the invasion of the Chinese Lanterns and my subsequent freak out, Red and the case of the Dead Hand followed in coming years by the coming of Gustav Santiago and his magical bottle of Absinthe, all of this adding to it...I ramble. Point is, I hope you love the camping and the good outweigh the bad. If Scary had adjacent camping I would be doing that for every faire without a doubt.

The Steel Dragon has ways of letting it's presence be known...

The McLot camp USUALLY quiets down between 12-1... that's when the flood lights get turned off and everyone gangs around the fires.  It may be near the main drum circle but you barely hear it.  If you do, take another couple of shots of Loki... all will be well. ;)

Yes, we do try to be quiet  :P

You may recall trying to talk your way past me on AHE. That was it. That was your initiation. If you need a 12 step program to feel like you belong I'm sure that we could come up with something, but I promise you won't like it.

Fraser, get Nasty out and take his leash off. Mouse feels like he wasn't accepted and wants some stupid initiation.

NO NO NO...you misunderstand me. No need for...Nasty? I read somewhere something about 90 days, 3 events, blah blah blah..and it wasn't on AHE I don't think but all the same. No initiations necessary. I still need to be unscarred mentally and what not and have full use of my extremities for my wedding..a year away. Something tells me that would be the least of my ailments..so PROUD TO BE A MCLOT *chuckles nervously* Seriously though, proud. Genuinely. Buuuuut, we are off topic again, the insanity of first time to faire and camping..aaaaand....GO!

Yes, there is the attendance of three events, you made it to camp last year so that counts as one.

I have the 4 cameras ready, covered in plastic bags to protect them. Who has the step stools for Mouse to stand on so that he doesn't drown? Nasty, get ready with the duct tape and gerbils. Fraser, put the hot wax down; we don't need that. The left over duct tape will suffice. Bonny should have the first aid kit ready, if not, oh well. All the funnier. Roll tape....and cue the naked midget jello wrestlers marching band...

My first year to camp as well. I have no idea what to expect. Or what to pack. Or what I'll even use or need!   ??? Sad, I know. But I see I'm surrounded by very positive, experienced, helpful rennies!  Hooray!  If you could message me with some tips, ideas, links to checklists, etc., that'd be awesome!  I want my kids to have a fabulous experience.  They're older teens so they can definitely stomach the "atmosphere" and "activities".  I just want to give them the full experience and enjoy my weekend.  :D

You can start planning with this list:

tent, windproof and waterproof
a groundcloth, such as an 8x10' polypropylene tarp
sleeping bag, pad, pillow and one extra blanket (non skin irritant)
fire extinguisher
SUNSCREEN lotion (important!)
flashlight and/or other artificial lighting
stainless steel camp cookware and eating utensils (unless you bought into a group kitchen)
moderate sized cooler for ice and cold drinks/food
camping chair, particularly one with a back
insect repellent
drinking mugs, horns, containers (note: ceramic is better than wood for sanitary reasons)
rain gear (even if it's mundane)
bath towel, shampoo, soap, soap case
tooth care: toothbrush, paste, FLOSS
Comfortable footwear! - and an extra pair in case one pair gets wet.

If you look through the older posts in the section of the forum you will find all sorts of info.  I believe there are even some checklists posted.

Things that I can think of at this moment are:

Fire Ant Killer!  This is a MUST.  You never know where the little buggers will appear.

A Rake.  Escpecially in the beginning of the season.  They will have just mowed and left the clippings.

A Tarp for under the tent.  This is to keep condensation from seeping in under your tent.

The mornings are typically very dewy and sometimes chilly or down right cold.  Keep and eye on the weather.

Above ground fire pits only.  Figure out how much wood you think you'll need then add more lol.

A lot of the clans have traditional areas that they camp.  So keep checking in here.  I believe MPullen usually posts a map and lists what clans will be where.

I'm sure folks will chime in with more.

Be sure to come see us at McLot, Rows 7/8! :)

One suggestion, lession learned though my own experience... NEVER RUSH while packing.  Make a list, check it twice then check it again.  I got in a rush last year and forgot about 20lbs potato salad and a couple dozen stuffed green peppers(AND some of my beer)...  i was not a happy camper when i got a phone call asking me if i had forgot anything... >:(

DOH!
