Title: Chemise question
Post by: Tink on May 16, 2010, 11:50:23 PM
I looked through the Garb topics, and didn't see this posted, but if I was mistaken, please move this to the correct spot.

I know how to make a plain chemise out of rectangles and either a draw-string or elastic neck gathering.  However, I am interested in making one of those V-neck chemises (I don't know what they're actually called) - the kind that has an elastic neck gather, but is cut in the front so that it makes a V look with the sides pulling towards the back of the neck.  Does anyone have instructions or know where I should be looking for some?

Thanks!

Me thinks those particular chemises are the drawstring type that has a seam down the front, a casing for the string. Rather than use string, use elastic. Make the opening 2 1/4" from the edge with enough space for the bias tape for the casing. At the ends where the elastic threads through, bar tack it down with several stitches. The elastic should be tauter to pull back at the center front, thus creating the V.

I have a second question: How do you make the sleeves open on the top?  Do you just hem the open edges instead of making a closed seam?
