Title: Pattern Storage Boxes
Post by: Sorcha on June 27, 2010, 08:23:31 PM
I was looking for some storage boxes for my pattern envelopes and I ran across these at IKEA.  I think they were $8 for the pair and they are the EXACT size of a standard pattern envelope!  Perfect!!  :D
They are in the "Home Storage" section and come in some great colors too.

Nifty!!

I'd been keeping all my patterns in a large paper shopping bag for years and years. Also for years and years, I've been collecting decorative boxes--but I never know what to do with them! I'd had one empty in my office--kind of a wooden casket or treasure chest sort of thing from Hobby Lobby that Milord gave me for my birthday years ago. It's been sitting there empty forever, until one afternoon I discovered that my whole stash of patterns fit in there perfectly!  Goodbye Coldwater Creek bag; hello unused casket!  ;D

(Will need new wooden casket soon, as stash is growing.)

I have to keep mine in the loft.  I have 13 stacking crates of them and a few strays...  I pop each one in an envelope and put it in the correct box for the type of pattern in the loft.

I keep mine in something similar the the container above.  Except mine has glitter on it.  :-)

I also keep them in my sewing desk.  I use to use boxes but found I like the clear drawers of the cart much better since I can see the first pattern easily.   I keep each drawer somewhat organized by era.

Funny enough I have started to use standard, and magazine width comic book boxes with tags on the front saying period, item type, or age level. Comes in handy is those times of "I know I bought that pattern but where did I put it?" Plus if you put your patterns in the comic book bags and boards, no wrinkles and they won't degrade as much. If there is one group that knows how to take care of old paper it is comic book guys.  ;D

I love the storage box idea but I don't keep my patterns in the original envelopes (can't get the damn things folded right to go back inside!).  So I put them into larger manilla envelopes and glue the original package onto the front so I know what it is.    Right now I'm using a tacky old plastic storage bin but when my sewing room is finished (this summer!!!) they'll go into a filing cabinet.  ;D

I keep my pattern stash in fabric bins that fit in my cube shelves... I've filled 3 with patterns from the big 3, then have another with my manila envelopes that hold my Margo patterns, plus all altered patterns. It works out really well!

(and no, the sewing room is no where near that neat now, LOL!)

wow, great ideas for pattern storage! I've been trying to figure out a better configuration for mine. I finally crammed them in a shoebox size sterilite container, but they don't fit in the slightest.  ::)  I am so envious of those of you with sewing rooms, that is my dream!!
