I am looking for stockings, and am wondering if you guys find your stockings at somewhere like Dillards? Are the knee high or thigh high? Are they authentic linen from a costumer? I don't think I want to spend more than $20 on stockings, but everywhere I look at authentic ones, the seem very expensive. Any ideas or tips?
i used to work at a Costume Shop. The tights and stockings that would rent with ensembles came from a vendor called Alan Sloane.
I have seen stockings on eBay for very reasonable as well.
I buy my stockings at Sock Dreams.

I bought wool kilt socks for R at Celtic Croft. I think they were around $30.00.
Also try Civil War sutlers.
oh wow, sock dreams is amazing! Thanks for the help everyone
I get a lot of mine at Hot Topic and Target.
Both places have a good mix of knee hi and thigh hi and they are fun too.
I was *very* disappointed with my Sock Dreams purchase. They did not stay up AT ALL.
I have 18th C. clocked stockings from Jas Townsend (http://jas-townsend.com/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_description=1&keywords=socks&x=0&y=0), but my favorite wear-to-fair socks are some bamboo knee-highs I found at Penney's last August. Soft, cool, and comfy--and a nice neutral very fine knit that works well with all my garb.
I've been looking at bamboo socks. I might go ahead and get them after this.
