Title: RenDezvous 2011 - It's a date!
Post by: Blushing on August 18, 2010, 12:30:31 AM
That sounded a lot more amusing in my head ...

The official RenDezvous 2011 weekend at the Colorado Renaissance Festival will be July 2-3.

Yes, that Monday is the Fourth of July which gives everyone a holiday for traveling, or better yet, a day to explore all the other treasures in Colorado!

We are so very excited to be hosting ... and we spent some time during the recent season researching and scheming.  A lot of such information will be forthcoming in the months ahead.  We hope ALL of you can make it!

But for the record, we will welcome any of you, any weekend.  ;)

It is now programed into my e-calandar, and written on my paper calandar.  Is it too early to put in for the time off? :)

Wow... that might be difficult coming from the East Coast.  Since it is a holiday weekend, airfare is going to be expensive.

Some one was talking about some sort of special accomidations idea they had.  And then we were all hoping for a driving caravan out of the DFW area, and picking up people along the way up there.
Now that we have dates we may see if we can drag a couple of our friends up there with us.

Rule #1 of traveling by air: Airfares make no sense. I needed to buy a 1 way ticket from MN to DFW for our daughter for Tuesday after Labor Day and scored an under-$80 ticket direct from the airline (with a confirmed seat) less than 1 month in advance. As I have continued to share my incredulity at a $700 ticket transforming into under $80, I've had a lot of people tell me it's because airlines have "deals" they pop out on Thursdays and I bought it on a Thursday. Long way of saying...don't assume a holiday weekend automatically pops prices up. I think the airlines are seeing lots of decline in pleasure travel so are doing some bit to entice it out of the masses. Check fares often and through various sources. Start now, you never know what will crawl out of the woodwork.

To Lady Stitch: Oh yes, the caravan from Texas. We MUST do that. It would be sooo much fun!!!!

It's helpful to poke around sites like Travelocity, Expedia, etc....they really come in handy when it comes to finding good deals, and they often give discounts if you book a plane ticket along with a hotel or rental car, things like that.  Options options options!

I use all sources to find airline tickets... coming in/out of Baltimore tends to be expensive.

Several of the RenDevous' have been held over holiday weekends, the three days off work for so many people who work "regular" jobs make it more convenient.  It IS actually more crowded travel and can be more expensive, but it also potentially gives everyone one more Faire day or a travel day without losing work.  At least there's a long time to plan/save...And remember that many people work regularly through the weekend and some especially over holiday weekends and need to arrange to get time off (if they can).  No matter what day is chosen it's always good for some and not good for others.

I'm going to toss this out there for the Pink Pirate.  This is just a thought he came up with.  Considering the rough area is a tourist area, why could we rent say a condo or something for the weekend.  Basically have a house that a bunch of us go in on. If it is $1000 bucks for the weekend split by say 10 couples/people  that is $100 for 2-3 days hotel.  Not a bad price.  No management to tell us to stay quiet at the pool.  Besides we take over hotels anyway, why not a whole house/cabin?

Then someone said something about their being a camp ground near by.  Having a massive Rendevous camp, the only thing is the people coming in from out of town on planes would either need to bring their own tent, OR have tents waiting for them when we they get there.  If you stay in camp chip in say....$50 a person. It pays for meals, TP, Sodas, and any basic camp supplies we would need.  If we have  a caravan going out, borrow or rent a trailer to haul all the stuff up there.  Have a true "Invasion" camp.

These are just thoughts I'm tossing out for discussion.

A lot of thought went into the date ... including weather, crowds and travel.  And there's almost a year to save!

I second the thought that airfares make no sense.  I will say that Fourth of July fares should be noticeably less than Memorial Day of other holiday weekends - it's not a typical travel weekend.  And there are two airports to choose from: Denver and Colorado Springs.  Airfarewatchdog.com is a great site for tracking/comparing airfares - I have several faire routes set so I can get regular updates to snag the best deal.

Can someone post what the typical temperature and weather is generally like for that weekend in that area?  I'm familiar with weather in the mountains above Boulder, but Faire is in the foothills, and I'm not sure how hot it will be then.

The weather for the beautiful town of Larkspurshire is as follows:

Hot (80-100 degrees), unless it's not (40-60 degrees).
Dry, unless it rains.
Sunny, unless there are clouds.
Rain, unless it snows.
Lightning, unless....nope, pretty much always lightning.

My advice is to wear warm weather clothes and pack a water resistant very warm cloak. You may go back to your vehicle throughout the day to layer up or layer down. The day usually starts warm and ends with rain. Early July doesn't usually get silly hot, but that leaves the chance for snow. It has happened.
Suncreen - higher SPF than you normally would and reapply, you don't have as much air between you and the sun.
Water - more than you think you need. When we do dry, we do dry.

Larkspur is the nearest town to the festival and is at 6669 ft above sea level. It's an adorable little town containing a coffee shop, a bar, a pizza joint, a flower shop, postoffice, and gas station. Also, a church and a school. Their website can be found here: http://www.townoflarkspur.org/main.html (http://www.townoflarkspur.org/main.html)

The biggest issue that out of towners have is thinking they can drink like they do back home. Between the uber-dryness and the altitude, you will be more affected by alcohol than normal - in the dehydrated, hangover way. So, stick to that 1:1 ratio of alcohol to water, and maybe even more. And have a safe way to get back to your sleeping place. The local Sheriff's department does random road side checks. Be safe!

Our festival is uphill both ways. No, really. You'll finally understand what your parents were talking about. Good, comfortable shoes are a must!

Hope that helps you get an idea.

Awesome, Tanda!  Thank you for the handy tips!  That's about like the Boulder area, then, and I've actually been in snow up in Nederland on July 4th, so I know you're not at all exaggerating!  I know about altitude and alcohol, also...  :o  :D

I will second this! SPF 50 and still a sunburn! Something that would have kept me perfectly un-sunburned in Texas! Ok, it wasn't a "ow ow ow I'm going to die without some cold compresses" type of sunburn, but definitely a burn.

If nothing else, a second coating during the day whereas I've never needed that at 500ft above sea level!

Side Note: squeee~! When can we start a countdown? LOL :)

The weather in that area of Colorado is pretty temperamental but its gorgeous, no matter what. Bring layers but expect to shed or add depending on what she's feeling like that day.  :D

WATER, WATER, WATER! I can't stress this to flat-landers enough. As a mountain-girl turned flat-lander, the mixture of dryness and altitude can really do people in. Headaches and bloody-noses used to be my plague when I lived in Colorado as a kid, and when I go back to visit family, I'm constantly have to keep an eye on myself.

Plane tickets will fluctuate from week to week and sometimes, month to month; just have to watch the prices.

I'm super excited for ya'll, this is a beautiful faire that I know everyone will enjoy!

I'll agree with the water advice.  I lived there for 9 years, and people there generally don't leave their house without their own personal water bottle, and refill it all through the day!  If you're not from there you should drink at least 3 times the water you usually drink while you're there, and maybe even more, for those of you who don't drink much to begin with...  Dehydration can ruin your whole visit, and who wants that when we could all be having a wonderful time at Faire!?!  :D

I would also stress the bringing of a cloak or other cover-up and leave it in the car if you can...clouds tend to roll in around 1-3 pm and sometimes they dump on us, and sometimes they sprinkle and move on, but you never can tell.  And if you are wearing delicate garb/steel boning/etc it's a good idea to stay covered up....all things we already know.  :)

Ride the Cog Railway to the top of Pike's Peak
Make the trip to Cripple Creek to take the Small Scale Railway Tour and play the "loose" slots  ;)
Check out the Royal Gorge
Lose some golf balls at Gleneagle golf course
Sit in a dive bar in Manitou Springs (and hopefully fynd some 4:20 friendly sorts - Rocky Mountain High Baby!)
And of course, visit yer wonderful shire!
And lose some more golf balls at the Gleneagle golf course.

Absolutely get to the top of Pike's Peak - anyway you can!
Royal Gorge is Amazing!
If you are in need of Herbal Medication, there are quite a few dispenseries around. (One just opened in Larkspur, actually).

Hope all your Colorado Adventures are safe and fun.

So far, two of the "Canadians" are planning on attending.  We have been talking about this since it was announced and are very excited to meet the people we are chatting with and the names we see on the forum.  The unfortunate thing is that this falls on the same weekend when our favourite faire is on in Toronto.

Any advice on accommodations would be greatly appreciated.

Most out-of-towners stay in Castle Rock, which is the closest big city, it is just north of Larkspur.  You might be able to get in touch with a couple other people and maybe all stay at the same hotel and carpool into the faire site together; it's about 15 minutes away.  If you go a little farther south of the faire site you will hit Monument and Colorado Springs, which are not terribly far away but the prices will probably be higher, especially in the Monument area.  Then of course there is the Denver/Denver South/Tech Center area, which is north of Castle Rock and is a lot farther away from the faire site, but you might find some good prices on hotels; also this area is closer to the airport.  When I go to faire, I stay at my parents' house, they live in Thornton and it's about 50 minutes away from faire, 25 minutes from the airport.  It's a bit of a drive to the faire site but the hotels are considerably cheaper.  So it all depends on what kind of budget you are looking at and how far you are willing to drive to and from faire and the airport, assuming you will be flying in.

I believe I read that there is adjacent camping, correct?  Can someone tell us what the camping is like there on the grounds?

Specifically:
Does it really fill up fast?
Does it open Friday, and if so, what time?
Is there water and/or facilities available?
What is the fee?
What are the rules (fires/firepits, animals, music, "quiet" times, alcohol, etc...)?
What sort of terrain is it?
How accessible is to the front gate?
Oh, and are there areas that are traditionally reserved for certain clans/groups, and if so, is there a map available of where regulars usually camp?

Unfortunately, the camping on site is only for those actually working the faire.
However, according to Google, there is a campsite one exit north from the faire - the freeway is like 2 minutes from site, assuming you don't get stuck behind a train. It's Jellystone Park, and it looks like they have rentals as well as RV sites. I would book now as opposed to later because I'm sure it will fill up fast. The website is: http://www.castlerockrvpark.com/

I think lots of people from the groups that gather at faire stay there.

And I'll second that there is A LOT of hotel room available in Castle Rock and the edge of the Denver area - look for Parker and Centennial addresses. Although anything on I-25 will get you to CoRF fairly quickly. Saturday and Sunday morning before 9am is pretty light traffic wise.

Oh... for some reason I was under the impression that there was an attached campground.  :-\  Darn...  Well, since our budget will be severely limited, there will be no way I could afford the cost of a hotel as well as the trip there and back, so this changes things considerably.  The campground rates for just a tent seem pretty high, particularly since we would be there for at least 3 nights, so at this point I'm wondering if we'll have to sleep in our van somewhere... or if we'll even be able to go.  :(

Title: Re: RenDezvous 2011 - It's a date!
Post by: Rani Zemirah on August 24, 2010, 08:40:28 AM
I spent a couple of hours looking online last night for somewhere to camp for free/cheap, and even the closest state park campground has already been completely booked, and it would have been 35-40 miles away, anyway.  July 4th weekend will mean that rates go up for everything, and that trying to find something affordable will be very difficult.  Even the Nat'l Forest, which has free dispersed camping, is farther away from the grounds than I'm comfortable with, since we would have to leave our tent and belongings unattended all day while at Faire, and find our way back on tiny, twisting roads in the dark, and we would have to miss all the evening activities, as well.

I'm not seeing a solution so far, but I'm not giving up just yet...

You know Rani i'm not part of the group organizing this so trying not to say to much but as Blushing said they are working on a list of places and such with possibly deals.

Now i have only been to jellystone once to help a friend set up but seem like there camp could hold several 3 to 4 man tents maybe if you can get one of those with several people the cost would be lighter on the old mouney pouch.
Title: Re: RenDezvous 2011 - It's a date!
Post by: Rani Zemirah on August 24, 2010, 02:59:36 PM
Well, I spoke to the office and they said the tent sites are only big enough for 1 tent, roughly 10 x 10 or so, but not much more, so only one tent to a site.  and $100 to camp for 3 nights is a bit out of my range, particularly since it doesn't include even an electrical outlet so I could plug in a fan or heater if I needed it.  I'll just have to see if there is another solution.

After missing every Rendezvous except for the one at my home faire, I'm not missing this one.  I will be on a tight budget like others, so I need to be creative with accommodations.  Camping is probably out, as we will be driving out with limited space for bringing stuff along.

Staying with someone who lives nearby?

Sharing a hotel room?

It looks like Jellystone has some of the cabins, tipis and yurts that will sleep 4-6 people each, so sharing is always an option.  I've had a tentative offer to share, if nothing else is available, and it could very well work for us, so I'm certainly not ruling the campground out, by any means!  It looks like a really pretty place, also, and they have something called, get this... a Pancake Wagon!!!  :D  I can imagine them being overrun by Ravenous Rennies looking for something to tide them over until they can get their Scotch eggs...  LOL

I think most of what they have are RV sites, though.

Hmm Well Lavender Castle Rock is only about 15 minutes north of the faire, Colorado Springs is about 30 minutes south of the faire. I don't know the plans for the get togethers also i would think about what airport people are coming in cause you have 1 in colorado springs then a big one in denver (DIA). Also you have the denver tech center or DTC that is about 25 to 30 minutes north of the faire grounds.

Hope that helps if not contact the ones that are planning said festivities.

Aside from the prices being higher for everything, the time frame this year isn't good for us.  For anyone in the hospitality/restaurant business, the Fourth of July weekend is usually a big one, that starts the summer season in the Midwest. Also, in my company, as in other large companies I worked for, if you take off the last working day before the holiday, you don't get paid for the holiday.

Chances of Lady Renee & Lord Stephen Buchanan attending RenDezvous this year?  Slim to none.

Which is a bummer, since we've attended 3 of the last 5 (same reasons why we couldn't attend Labor Day last year in MD, holiday tourism weekend).

But miracles happen, so we'll see.

I can see how a holiday weekend, while easier for me and some, may be more difficult for others. I'm not sure there's anything better the organizers could have done.

On the other hand, if you folks could turn the economy around, that would be good for all us and get a lot more folks out to Colorado. ;D

Perhaps someone will win the lottery and share the ren love.  :)

I did a quick search via Priceline and I'm seeing rates below $300 from Tampa to Denver. Don't know what rates are from other cities but it does look like rates are down a bit now and if you are committed now might be the time to leap.

Southwest now has up to 144 non stop flights out of Denver. While I hate their seating policy, they do offer two free bags per passenger. I know I need two bags when I travel to faire, so this is a great savings!

You know, I really should learn to never say never.

I thought I couldn't make it the last Rendezvous, and work took me to that part of Texas at just the right time.

And lately I've been thinking that Colorado next summer was out of the question, and now I've found out we may have a free place to stay, and my wife and I racking up a ton of frequent flier miles next month, so we may be able to fly free. I can afford free! So if everything works out the way it looks like it's going to, we'll be there, our third Rendezvous in a row.

The Pink Pirate and I are planning on going but it will all depend on when a family member decides to have her wedding.  If she has it before or after, that would be great but if it is the same weekend....  Saddly they have to come first.

I've a question... Tickets.  Not on sale until May? But, according to the website, I can still get discounted tickets at Front Range King Soopers?  What the bloody `ell is that? How much will tickets be?  Will CoRF possibly give us a group rate?
Title: Re: RenDezvous 2011 - It's a date!
Post by: Skip on March 03, 2011, 03:35:24 PM
The price for group and from King Soopers is the same - $15.95 each (adult).  King Soopers is a grocery chain of Krogers and there is one right off of exit 184 in Castle Rock (right on the other side - east - of the interstate from the hotels).

Will we be able to purchase the discount tickets still when we arrive in July? Although...really, I don't know why I'm even worried. An extra $12 is going to be completely lost in a 6-day trek to Colorado and back! I am somewhat anal in that I like to have my tickets in hand beforehand.

ps...thanks for the info....

Just a note - KS doesn't print them on site, but they tend to over order, so no worries with the running out. (We always had way more at the end of the season than we needed and never had to reorder.) Although, with that said, the King's in Castle Rock may be strained with all this hubbub. You may want to stop somewhere not in Castle Rock and buy them. They are spaced about 2 miles apart throughout the Denver Metro Area (can you tell I used to work for them?)

Baron, what is attendance like on this weekend (historically speaking, since this actual weekend is not upon us :) ).

We are set to come, but found out that the Youngs' will be in NY.  Thought about changing weekends, but we know a few coming in for Rendezvous, so we shall stay with our current plan.

Children's weekend has a habit of going either way. It could either be really packed or not at all. The last two seasons, because it has also coincided with the 4th of July landing directly on either Saturday or Sunday, attendance has been down a little--although it's possible that it's because one of the years when the 4th was on Saturday it poured for most of the day. At least that's been my impression; our sales have been down on that weekend of late.

Add roots, take a swig of Jack Daniels...
Add minerals, take a swig of Jack Daniels...
Add rat teeth, take a swig of Jack Daniels...
Mix while you pour another Jack Daniels...
Add newts, take a swig of Jack Daniels...
Chase down the newts that jumped out of the pot, take a swig of Jack Daniels...
Add bark, take swig of Jack Daniels...
Throw out the pot, hand out swigs of Jack Daniels!

Drinking at CoRF will get to you and FAST. The altitude along withthe heat can be a killer not to mention this faire is NOT on flat ground. The elevation from gate to Puke-n-Snot to the jousting arena is huge. The gate is some where around 6500 feet P-N-S at 7000 and the joust at 6000.

People who drink heavily at CoRF usualy find a place to plant it and stay, and that place is Pirates Pub since they can drink more and have some shade.

Just an FYI

*sigh*  Gotta come up with somethin'.

Hey if you need some practice sewing I was going to make me a kilt but holy crap those things are full of all kinds of material and hard stuff to do!!!!

Oh come on it wasn't that bad.

Nothing wrong with a 290 pound man that is secure in his manhood dressing up as a big pink fairy and scarring the insecure straight men.

Thanks, it just isn't very often I have the opportunity to share that little tid bit!

Fairy? Princess? Obscure historically importantfigure that can mock the education of the youth today? Knight? Fairy Tale personality? The new Little Red movie just came out. Evil stepsister/mother. I'm full of ideas..just not full of the energy or talent to pull any of them off.

But kilts require no sewing at all! Well...maybe hemming..but that is it. Or are you cheating and setting your pleats?

And unless I'm wrong (and I'm often wrong), we've less than 90 days to go!

Umm, you never say the pictures of the Pink Pirate from last Ren Devous did you? Keep your fingers crossed that we can still come.  With Fuzzlet coming in September we would like a 'little' vacation.  If we can swing the numbers, a large fuzzy pink pirate with his drabbit sidekick will be there to make kids smile, and scare the adults.  ;D

Ok you have any direction for making a kilt without sewing.  The only things I found online were complicated and required a lot of sewing!

Merlin,
Meet-N-Greet will take place 7/1/2011 - Friday evening at Rockyard Brewery, starting at 7PM til 11PM or closing?? (should allow locals working that day, some time to get there).

There will be a separate Thread, ... not yet created. Please be patient.

DETAILS, for all events will be forthcoming.

There will be a surprise that evening for RF members, so you don't want to miss the opportunity to meet as many RF'ers as possible in a friendly, fun, forum, for the coming two days of faire.

Does it cost to park at CoRF?
Title: Re: RenDezvous 2011 - It's a date!
Post by: Tanda on April 17, 2011, 08:31:01 AM
It does not cost to park at CoRF. And there is ample parking. I would, however, suggest getting there before 9:00am to get a prime spot. Especially if you are planning to return to your vehicle during the day. There is a shuttle bus that runs from the outer parking areas to the main entrance, so do not despair. But it can be quite the hike to get that warm cloak or extra layer of sunscreen. Besides, all the cool people park in the first 3 rows.

Side note: There is handicap parking. Make sure your placard is displayed and ask one of the parking attendants.

On the other side note: There is motorcycle parking very close to the front gate.

There is a nice grove area (uphill from the entrance - everything seems uphill) that is great for shade, but you need to get there quite early to get a spot.  So if you like to take a break, it is a great spot.  Otherwise, like Tanda said, early you can get right outside the gate, which is great for a quick trip to the car, but no shade.

But do not be fooled. The first parking lot you see is for cast and crew. Go past that one until you see the front gates. Getting there near 9am insures your not on the other sde of Colorado when you park

Yep, easy mistake, we did that our first visit 2 years ago.  Thanks to someone in the loot that let us know - that is when we found the 'grove'.

Yeah, usually there is an attendant at that first lot who will direct you on to the further lot--you have to show an employee ID to get into the first lot.

Perhaps the good folks organizing the RenDezvous will be able to secure us a parking "area" where we can do a little pre-cannon tailgating, etc.  That was a marvelously handy feature when I visited FL.

Unfortunately the 'grove' area of which I spoke does not accomodate that many vehicles (unlike the 'grove' at MNRF :) )

But this is a good idea
