Title: Underpinings
Post by: Lady Catharine on August 26, 2010, 08:25:14 AM
How do you eliminate the very bottom of your hoop slip/farthingale , of your court gown draping over it?
I would like a smooth un-noticed wire, then having bottom of dress over it..Am I  'splaining' correctly?

Ruffles.  Add a layer of ruffles over the wires on the farthingale.

I have 2 hoop slips, and each shows that noticeable fabric draping over the floor length hoops.
I do not have  a farthingale.Mayhaps I should get one-if no ruffles, would the farthingale be a better selection?

It seems on heavier brocade gown's this is not an issue.

Fussy Fussy I am...

It won't matter whether its a hoop skirt or a farthingale.  The extra material between the wires of the hoop skirt and outer fabric of the overskirt provide a smooth looking surface.  Just sew ruffles on the hoop skirt, attaching them above the wires to hide the wires when you wear another skirt over it.

And make sure the hoop goes out evenly at the bottom. If the bottom hoop is disproportionaly bigger than the hoop above it, you will probably see the hoop no matter what. You should be able to adjust the steel, though. Pictures might help us diagnose your problem a little better.

Ruffles or a slightly thicker skirt over it to hide the lines. I dont wear hoops but seeing the lamp shade effect annoys the heck out of me ( weird I know)
