Title: I have a 6 days to finish my son's new garb. Kick me!
Post by: Lady Rosalind on August 29, 2010, 10:40:52 AM
I started this project months ago, and still haven't had the opportunity to devote much time to it. My son had a big growth spurt this year, and his doublet from last year is too short, too tight in the collar, and it was too tight in the waist (he's since grown a little more, and the waist issue sorted itself out). He's spent the whole season in a doublet that was too small, and he needs something to wear to the Des Moines Faire this year (we're on cast).

Due to various work schedule issues (like working 60+ hours weeks for the last 2 weeks, including weekends), his doublet and slops just aren't getting finished. I have finally sorted and solved all of the work issues, and have to get at least his doublet done by Friday (preferably Thursday!).

I need you folks to kick me and keep me working like a demon seamstress today!

I have the entire day today! I will have 3 hours every evening, but I still need to fix the hem of my black silk dress (it has paint on it! and it's too short!)!

Today will be devoted to the doublet, which is still in pattern form (as yet unaltered!) on my sewing table (at least I found the old one, so I can lengthen it and add an inch to the collar!). I am using slashing on the front and back, and black grosgrain ribbon trim. I've found that using fray-check on slashes on gray linen is a bad idea, so the slashes will be unfinished. (the fray-check dries darker!!!!!) The lining is black linen.

The slops make not happen for this weekend, but the panes are slashed, finished, and trimmed, and waiting for me to cut the lining and underlay. I've never made slops before. I can always buy another pair of scrub pants to lop off, as he has ONE pair that still fit.

Please help me keep on track!!!  ;D

BTW, I LOVE working with linen. I think my son's garb is going to look smashing, if only I can get it together in time!

Okay, back to the sewing room!!!!!

Go! Go! Go!!! Make haste!!

I'm right there with you! KCRF starts the same weekend, and I desperately want to have ALL the Much Ado garb done by Sept 11, as well as getting a new kirtle for me started (I've done the mockup; I just need to start construction). Today I'm starting the flatlining for my Much Ado Beatrice bodice...

...but here I am on the computer instead! Eek!

Thanks, everyone!!!!! I've been monitoring the thread all day, and it's really helped!

Right now, I'm waiting for the lining material to wash, since I somehow missed doing this earlier.

Progress so far:

The outer shell is put together, trimmed, and slashed. After I get the lining constructed, and the tabs finished, I can put the whole thing together fairly quickly.

I had to run to JoAnn Fabrics earlier for more ribbon, and some larger eyelets for another project. I also made dinner, and then spent another good hour working on getting the collar set right. That is my least favorite part, and I really wish there was an easier way to do it (I am using the Margo Anderson Men's patterns). I basted very carefully on the seam line, checked to make sure it was right, then machine sewed it.

On track for tonight yet: get lining washed and shrunk, and watch Mad Men! I have an iron-clad rule that I never sew after 10 pm, as it takes way too long to undo the mistakes, LOL!

Tomorrow's plan:

1. cut out lining - this is going to be tricky, as I have a very, very limited amount of the lining fabric.
2. construct lining
3. cut out tabs
4. slash tabs
5. construct tabs

Tuesday night:
1. sew tabs to doublet shell
2. baste lining to shell
3. sew lining to shell
4. Figure out how the button loops are going to be dealt with, and make it work

Wednesday night
1. Sew on buttons!
3. Take care of any hand-sewing!

Gotta plan, gotta stick to it!

Thanks again folks!

Picturing you very busy sewing away and sending good thoughts. Yes to the not sewing past when you know you'll be tired. No fun having to rip stitches when you are in a rush to finish a project. Can't wait to see it!

The funny thing is, I do some of my best work late at night! My "internal editor" is asleep and I am SO much more fearless!

HAHAHHAHAHHA>>.

As soon as I make a schedule, it all goes to pieces!

Current status: tabs are sewn, shoulder wings are basted, and I am ready to begin pinning and basting the lining to the shell for sewing.

However, tonight I have to go to the faire site to get some things ready. Luckily, I have tomorrow off, so I hope I can finish up what is needed in time.

Thanks for the kicks, folks! It's helped a lot!

I'll take some at lunch, while I'm pinning! This has been a fun project, for the most part. It's just that I've worked so many extra hours at work, and I've got so much to do that I'm starting to feel very stressed and discouraged. I still need to make my new fan and fix my hem on my black skirt, too.

Oh well, I'm attempting to get in a better mood (work this morning has already been crazy). I'm hoping getting out the site and having dinner with friends will help.

As promised, photographic proof that things are actually getting done, LOL!

Full view (I had to stand on a chair to get the full width in the frame!)

The other shoulder wing:

The same slashing and trim placement is present on the slops panes. Each pane has a column of slashing at a 45° angle in the same direction, half of the panes with slashes angled up, half angled down. The slops might be done by next week, depending on how horrible my work week is next week.

I managed to get the lining half pinned in prep for basting to make a semi-turned lining. Tonight, after getting home, I will baste this sucker, so I can sew it and finish it tomorrow!

Thanks!

Too tired for sewing tonight. Spent about an hour and 45 minutes at the faire site, then out to dinner with friends, and the 40 minute drive home. Long day... I'm getting up a bit early tomorrow to try to get some work done before heading to work. Luckily, I have tomorrow off. It should go fast once I get the lining basted. I may make my son sew on his own buttons, though!

Ha!!  I had the exact same thought today: Maybe Milord could sew the buttons on his Much Ado vest...

After a 3.5 hour sewing marathon, I am nearly finished with the doublet! I just have to sew on the trim I use for button loops, and sew on the buttons. Like I said, I think the teenager's going to have to learn to sew on buttons tonight!

Here is an in-progress pic. I really like how the slashes turned out, especially with the black lining. I can't wait to get the matching slops done as well! (Please ignore the fact that the doublet is, in fact, on my dress form, over my red-carpet dress, LOL!)

It's looking great!

If my 15 YO son can make a pair of jeans and sew all his own name tapes on, I'm sure yours can learn to sew buttons on.
