Title: eating these donuts will help me get all the sewing finished...right?
Post by: ladyharrogate on September 24, 2010, 05:33:33 PM
I am stressed with 8 costumes to make in 8 days...so I ate 8 homemade donuts (smaller than normal donuts).  Yes, I blew it on the healthy eating for today but now I have enough sugar in my system to keep me going for a few more hours.  Anyone wanna share their sewing crunch stories/sucesses/disasters?  Okay, maybe not the disasters...I'm looking for inspiration!!!  I will get it all done I will get it all done.  If any of you get out to the Carolina Ren Fest in a few weeks and see a lady with no hair, say hi!....it'll be me after trying to finish all this work!!!

I don't know how inspiring this is but the gown in my avitar that I'm wearing I put together in less than 2 days.  I had started on the bodice and left it then found out about an even that if you attended in garb you recieved a free ticket to MNRF.  Well, of course I wanted that free ticket!  So, I threw together the new gown.  It wasn't finished but it was certainly wearable!  =)  Not bad considering that those two days the husband and children all decided that they needed me constantly!

Lady Fae, I know what you mean about the family needing you.  The summer put me behind on everything because I had four kids between the ages of 6-10 home.  I was soooo ready for school to start LOL.

Kate, you can do it!!!  The brown one looked great!

I usually put on Poirot or CSI, have snacks available (mini carrots, potato chips, fruit, whatever gives me quick energy), as well as loads of water. Then I sew like a maniac until finished.

So in that context - yes to donuts! Hehe.

I do hope you made it through the night and caught at least a cat nap.  Don't sew when glazed!  (donut pun) I have put skirt panels on inside out and put left sleeve on right side of bodice and all sorts of horrors when sewing glassy eyed and sleep deprived. But if it makes you feel better the gown I plan to debut at OHRF next Saturday is still folded neatly on the cutting table..... uncut!

I went to bed and slept the sleep of the damned!   ;)

This morning the rest of the red petticoat of doom went together like a dream: just as if nothing had gone wrong yesterday!

I fiddled with the machine I was using:
Found the foot pressure control and altered it to Light...  Stopped it mashing the gathers into a mess!
Took the bobbin case to bits and cleaned it.  This stopped all the problems with the thread jumping out from under the leaf spring!

I need to go out for a short while.  Then this evening and tonight I finish off the shoulder wraps, make some flowers, and finish all the hand worked loops on the gown back!

I also tried on a dress I am going to make again for the wedding in a different colour.  Hmm...  I REALLY need to get serious with the weight loss again.  That dress is so tight I dare not sit down in it, and it was LOOSE for the Silver Wedding do a couple of summers back!  My bum has been expanding and is now the size of Africa, and mostly chocolate!  Gotta go!  But at least I now what I have to do to the pattern!

I did 4 dresses in 4 days last weekend.  I was hurting for 4 days afterwards.  The Pink Pirate dragged me out of the house one night to MAKE ME take some time off.  Funny soon as I had the night off, and real sleep I got oodles of work done.  Go fig.
I hemed 3 dresses last night.

As for eatting donnuts to make you sew better...  After I had spent 2 hours dealing with collar problems, and dissapearing bodice piece. I went and had a big bowl of chocolate ice cream, and felt much better.  Of course soon as it was finished the theater called  me to say one girl's brand new boots, the heel broke off and needed to be replaced in 4 days.  At least it worked for a little while.

thanks for all the encouragement.  Glad to know I'm not the only one.  this weekend (including friday) I finished two hoopskirts, all but the waistband on pants and a vest for one of the London Broil guys.  got all the costuming for the sultan finished (2 long caftans, a short caftan and three vests).  I also made two hoop skirts, an underskirt and finished the bodice on a court gown with a really cool edging....

and I didn't even sew on the way to and from the wedding a faire friend had Saturday LOL.  So, list for next week and five days....

6 guard doublets
jester costume
chemise for my two youngest kids
doublet and half cloak
peasant doublet
trumpet flags
banners for court paiges
surcoat and squires tabard for a knight at TRF (what date do they open?)
...and maybe a dress for me!
