I don't know what these are necessarily referred to as but if you have ever seen Disney's Aladdin they are the type of pants he wears that are slim at the top and roundly puffy at the bottom if anyone know of some patterns that ca help me make a pair that would be awesome.
sorry if this kind of thing has been asked about before I was not sure how to a topic search but if there is another thread, just point in the right direction.
Harem pants?
http://www.ehow.com/how_2125562_sew-harem-pants.html
The Big 3 have several versions. Look in the costumes. Mainly for women but easily adjusted. ;)
They are called sirwal. Here's an interesting article w/a pattern on page 13. When I lived in Jordan many years ago, I saw village women wearing these - especially older women as they are a more traditional item of clothing. http://katjaorlova.com/FemaleTurkishGarb.pdf
Oooooh, nice link! I've been wanting Turkish garb for ages, and this will fill out my ideas nicely! Thanks, Taffy!!!
For herem pants I use the simplicity pattern. Its super easy to make, nut I do raise the waist about 3in because they are LOW riders.
In fact I trim them down and use them for bloomers or some I havent put elastic in the ankle cuffs and they are very comfy pants.
good luck
The harem pants as in I dream of Jeannie are a basic wide leg pant with a gathered cuff. Use any PJ pattern to achieve the look. I don't want to say they aren't period because I do recall one manuscript with a depiction of them (I think Persian?) but I do know they are not common and yet another "But Hollywood told me they dressed this way!" ism.
The link Taffy provides, has a pattern for period styled pants. They are very similar in construction to Italian drawers of the same period (probably with good reason). You can see some of the extant examples here (http://realmofvenus.renaissanceitaly.net/workbox/extdraw.htm) with the drawers on either side of the middle one being similar construction. The middle pair are most likely pants which were also worn beneath gowns but there is evidence that some courtesans wore only the pants with a shirt and pair of bodies.
lol wow this topic grew a lot more then I expected it to in just an evenings worth of time.
but totally love all the info.
I am sure I will be getting started on making some lovely new garb...soon. ...I even have an idea of what fabric and color I want.
quick question with these patterns you all gave would using cotton fabric be okay?
lol if so must make not to self to go and get cheap wal-mart fabric before yet another store loses to the stupid cooperate BS. -_-grr

sorry to ask kind of a semi dumb question here but do you know what the pattern # might be? the issue for me is I have so many simplicity patterns its hard to keep track of them all...lol and I don't want to run out buy a new pattern that I have no real need for.
I think they may be referring to Simplicity pattern 3626.
Cotton should work just fine.
(oops typo)
I think you mean 3626. Simplicity 3826 is an evening dress!
I like Simplicity 5359. And use cotton gauze.
I have Simplicity 5359, and I've been wanting to use it for ages, but I'd have to alter the sizing, and that always makes me nervous.
I use 5359 and its a good pattern to use.
I use the circle skirt as a good ol' stand by, I add more panels in the skirt than it calls for though depending on how full I want the skirt.
The vest is simple and it works great for kiddos too
I've been wanting to make a vest like that for quite sometime myself but o be perfectly hones the whole outfit of the girl wearing is quite lovely too (main photo on 5359)
the other pattern looks fairly similar to what I wanted I will admit I am just mentally noting that the waist I was envisioning would be slimmer, and the legs a bit more puffy...is there a way to make that work with this pattern? not sure if I own 3626 but I can keep an eye out for it.

I think they should have more width in the lower part to get the right look. Like these:
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_iXwdWzsjFLo/S1e3LLpdEmI/AAAAAAAAD2E/Z-TTbcpoJMc/s1600-h/HAREM-PANTS.jpg
The ones in the patterns seems to modern, somehow... or is it just me?
The picture does make them look very stiff and straight, not loose and flowey like I think of harem pants. Maybe it's the fabric they chose?
Here's another site that might help:

S5359 is like that.
I think the fact they are showing silky pants makes them look more modern I am not really a fan of using silk I using cotton more myself but yeah the picture you were using totally what i am thinking i want

I certainly think I want to get my hands on several of those patterns
1.Duriyya's Djellaba
2.Etiya's Etek
3.Al-Zahra's Ghawazee Coat
4.Parveneh's Panels
I really like coats and cloaks mostly since a god portion of the faires I go to are in the cooler months lol although the one that is running right now its like in the 70's which is odd for October I think. Not to mention a lot of this stuff could be used at SCA events to which is appealing as hell since I do both.
Yes, I just made the Al-Zahra's Ghawazee coat pattern. I resized it down for my granddaughter and up for myself. I posted a pic in the thread about that pattern. It's a pretty easy pattern to work with.
Forgive me for hijacking Kala's thread just a bit, but Lady L, I'd love to see the coats you've made. In which thread did you post it? I can't seem to find it.

This thread.

I would also like to see the up size for you. Do you have a pic?
Thanks for looking up the right thread, Dinobabe!
Yes, I have one pic with me, that was ok, but I haven't uploaded it to photobucket yet. I will try to find it for you.
I used striped cotton Damask that I bought on sale, when our Walmart was going out of fabric, for mine. I also made the longer split sleeves for mine.

Here's the photo of myself and my granddaughter, wearing the ghawazee coats I made this year.

Not a good photo of me, but you can see the sleeves a bit better.
Lady L, both pictures are beautiful! I love the outfits you made for both of you. They are so pretty and look very comfortable. Great job!
Thank you, Lady Renee! We appreciate your kind compliment.

And you went to the trouble of flying to the Middle East to take that picture. Wow! ;)
you do look wonderful lol totally makes me look forward to working with the pattern now.
its amazing how much faire has inspired me to begin sooo many new sewing projects.
its nice to hear the pattern is easy to work with.
LOL, Lady L, awesome pic! Really like the fabric, and what a fun outfit to wear to Faire!
Looking forward to seeing your creation Kala. :)
LOL Dinobabe, the drapery, window and kitchen chair just didn't look right in that pic. ;)
kala-it is a good pattern to work with, just get the fit right using a mock up, first. The rest is easy. ;D Faire had the same affect on me and now I have *who knows how many* totes of fabric.
Thanks, Anna, it was clearance fabric from Walmart. I really miss having the convenience of purchasing fabric there. :(
The choli top under it was based on the Simplicity pattern and a Tshirt that fit well. The bra I purchased and then really reinforced it, covered it with fabric and added the rest of the broken belt and a kuchi dangle.
lol just might take a bit of time Anna since I am in the process of beging to move to st.louis for school lots going in my schedule.
but hopefully I can find time to sew again soon
